Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hello & Welcome ...

I'm often asked where the front page photos are taken ... so for those of you who are interested, the two gorgeous flamingoes on this month's cover were photographed at the Malta Bird Park in Naxxar, near St Paul's Bay during a recent holiday Mike and I had there. Game of Thrones fans will recognise the photo at the top of page 7 as the site of the Dothraki Wedding in Season 1 of the series also Malta, on the island of Gozo. Next month is Make a Will month with St. Richard's Hospice (page 49), so if you haven't already got a Will, now's the time to get one done. If you are looking for things to do and places to go in August, apart from the events on our What's On page, there's the Pershore Plum Festival (page 11), Battle of Evesham (page 35) and for the art lovers, West Malvern Art Festival (page 30) and Open Studios (page 46). We're still looking for one more distributor in Evesham, so if you are interested, please give me a call. Until next month, keep well, and enjoy the magazine.

The Cheeseboard 100 Barnard's Green, Malvern, WR14 3ND

01684 891900

Hereford Red by Andrew Brooks

H

ereford Red is a deep coloured, mild and creamy local cheese. It has a medium flavour similar to a Red Leicester, with a fuller taste. Hand made at Pond Farm, Whittington, by Nick Hodgets who has been making cheese for well over 20 years - a great cheesemaker, with a range of different cheeses all produced locally. A mild, nutty English cheese, made from pasteurized cow’s milk and vegetarian rennet, and coloured a deep red with Annatto, a dye extracted from the seed of a South America plant. This cheese gives a good colour to any cheeseboard.

Getting married and want images of the whole event. Preparing product or website advertising and need images (including digitally manipulated), need shots taken of architecture, landscapes or landmarks.

Are you a model or an agent needing portfolio or fashion shoot photographs. All of these and more can be provided by BG Digital Photo-graphs. Picture Book Competition

SECONDARY AWARD

W

e are delighted to announce the winner of this year's Secondary Award is Pershore High School in Pershore, for The Spirit of the Titanic by Lucy Barker in Year 9. This is the second year in a row that Pershore has won the award. Judge David Melling said of the entries: "This category had a more mixed range of entries. Some strong illustration but not always balanced with strong writing ... or some extremely well written stories but with weaker artwork. However, this entry stood out: WINNER The Spirit of the Titanic Year 9, Lucy Barker My favourite story and extremely well written, I found it very engaging and particularly enjoyed the letter insert, a nice touch which helped support the emotion running throughout the story. A moving story that drew me in and a deserved winner! David was very impressed with Lucy's entry. She did extremely well to have won what has been a very difficult competition to judge. As David Melling makes clear in his

14

comments, the standard of entries this year has been really high and entrants did very well to make it to the shortlist. To then go on and win a category is very impressive. Lucy has also won a set of ten books for the school library. Publisher Hachette will also print 50 copies of the picture book for school. These are likely to be completed after the end of term, so we will receive these in September. Last year 14 year-old Magda Rumney, also from Pershore, won the award for her picture book, Timekeeper.

he company has over 200 offices nationwide, is a member of the UK Home Care Association and registered with the Care Quality Commission. We offer a solution that allows people to live fulfilling, independent lives while remaining within the comfort of their own home. Things aren't always what they seem ... A flight from Melbourne to Brisbane was unexpectedly diverted to Sydney. The flight attendant explained that there would be a short delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50 minutes. Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. One of the other passengers had noticed this lady as he walked by and could tell she was blind because her Seeing Eye Dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight. The lady was obviously a regular on this particular flight because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, “Kathy, we'll be in Sydney for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?” The blind lady replied, “No thanks, but maybe Max would like a walk.”

odern life is often incredibly busy, making it difficult to have the time to find that 'someone special' to share it with. With most of us working long hours it seems that meeting a prospective partner in the traditional way is almost impossible. It’s little wonder then that the popularity of online dating has grown exponentially over the last five years. An online approach to seeking companionship is not only convenient, but it also fits in around the unpredictability of modern life. However online dating does have its own pitfalls though … often in the shape of little white (and sometimes, enormous black) lies from other users! So how do you weed out fiction from fact … truth from lies? It's just more stress, when all you want is to find that someone special online. That's where Matcheo comes in. Matcheo is a dating site with a difference, and it’s now available in your area! The website has a mandatory verification feature for all new members, providing a level of certainty and trust that results in more interest, more often! Rather than simply providing a website for hopeful daters to list their details, a Matcheo Dating Consultant now actually meets with each and every one of its members to obtain ID verification. This means that all new member profiles are 100% genuine with no false pictures, no fake names, no age reductions and most importantly, no nasty surprises! Every new Matcheo member is provided with a verified virtual ID card, and whilst they guarantee that no sensitive information will ever be published or retained by Matcheo, it does allow the site to ensure that all of the information listed by new members is genuine, up to date, and truthful. As Daniel Papandreou, Area Franchise Director explains, "Being verified helps our

members stand out from the online crowd and attract more dates after we prove they are whom they say they are. This way members can be sure they're communicating with a genuine person who's serious about finding a suitable partner online". Matcheo has more than 4 million happy UK members and with the franchise now opened in Worcester, you too could benefit from our safe and successful dating scheme. fter a busy few months, we are finally settled in our new premises. We are very proud of what has been achieved over the last three decades and to have such an amazing new facility really makes us feel that Evesham Cats Protection has been rewarded for all the hard work over that time. If you are thinking of having a cat, are a cat lover, interested in volunteering or just wonder what we are so excited about, the team of volunteers will show you around, between 11am and 3pm ... we are keen to show off our new premises and are happy for people to call in. There are a number of resident cats, who for various reasons live at the centre and always ready to meet and greet visitors, like Fizz (centre picture). You can come and sit, enjoy the atmosphere and get some cat company. There are goodies to buy for cats, from treats to toys and treats for humans too.

full of cats needing new homes, keen to see friendly faces. Sadly some cats have been with us a number of months and are still waiting to go to a new home, for example, Ringo (pictured below left). He was handed in as an un-neutered stray; now he has been neutered, he has a mature attitude, but he's fed up with spending the sunny days in his pen, when he would like to be out in a garden. Of course it is kitten season and we have many colours and ages needing a home too, although we know when people see them racing around they will want to take them all home. When adopting from Cats Protection you can be reassured that you are you are getting a well cared cat or kitten. We look forward to seeing you there.

Unfortunately the rehoming pens are always

Building a Nature Reserve from Waste article & photography by Pamela Green

H

ave you ever thought what happened to the soil from the Channel Tunnel? Well, nearly five million cubic metres of ‘Chalk Marl’ clay were deposited on an area known as ‘The Lower Shakespeare Cliff Site’, now known as Samphire Hoe. It was named after the plant Samphire, (Crithmum Maritmum), which grows wild on the cliff face. It is a vegetable with a hot, spicy taste, and is very rare. The seeds are very hard to find and removal of the wild plants is illegal. Considering the location of Samphire Hoe within sight of Dover Port - the peace and quiet is quite fantastic. The area has been landscaped and planted with wild flowers and grasses, but one plant that I never expected to find was the wild orchid. The pyramidal orchid, the monkey orchid, and the common spotted bee orchid, grow there for all to see. I met several photographers and like me they were lay down on the grass, trying to capture these beautiful plants. The vegetation and flowers are attracting the wildlife. Skylarks, meadow pipits, and mallards are nesting and feeding in the grasslands. Dragonflies and damselflies, breed in the ponds, and grasshoppers and crickets have discovered the area, and today Samphire Hoe has many special treats for the family.

26

There is an education centre for the thousands of visitors to learn more about the wild flowers and plants. The centre is a great place for school visits. The children can discover the mini beasts in the grassland, or the mysterious world of the rock pools. Volunteer Rangers run the centre, along with White Cliffs Countryside Partnership, and if the children join the Green Gang they can learn how to become a Junior Ranger. The Hoe also has a coffee booth and I enjoyed drinking mine while I watched the ferries as they docked and unload. There is plenty of room for family picnics, and for children to play. The Hoe is easily accessible to all, and even wheelchair users are catered for. Ramps and zigzag paths lead around the area and even the mile of sea wall is reachable. Many anglers visit the Hoe, as there is always plenty of room for sea fishing. I still cannot imagine what went into building such an interesting place from waste clay. Samphire Hoe, is signposted off the A20, Folkston to Dover road, or for the cycle enthusiasts, the National Cycle Route 2. For more information you should visit the website: www.samphire.co.uk.

fter Dad died, Mum became more and more socially isolated. It took three years to convince her to move to be near me. I found a lovely warden supported flat: lots going on, social events, good ‘neighbours’. However, her hearing and eyesight were poor and these were given as the excuse for not joining in with the social events. Also because she was now local, I ended up providing her evening meal seven nights a week and helping round the house. Then Mum had a fall and a mini stroke. We were in a vicious circle. Mum was not eating, not drinking, and eventually was admitted to hospital. Her GP proposed that she should come home with professional care. Not every day, but enough to help me, to support Mum, and to take the pressure off. I did some research online and also asked friends. Helping Hands came up on several occasions. I contacted them and arranged for them to meet Mum at the hospital on the same day, and I really did feel they had a ‘cando’ approach. There was no hard sell. The options were well presented and we made our choice.

7 Ways to Avoid Falling off the Healthy Eating Wagon Whether you’ve been riding the healthy eating wagon for a week or a decade, staying on can be difficult. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can hold on.

K

eep reading to learn seven ways to protect yourself against the temptation to fall ... or even jump off of the healthy eating wagon ... on a daily basis. 1) Don’t Starve Yourself Eating is a basic human need. Cut your calories in half over night or slash any specific food group out altogether for a prolonged period and you’ll land flat on your face in no time flat. When you’re eating for good health, you still need to eat. You’ll just need to go with healthy options and avoid eating more than your body needs to fuel itself through the day. 2) No Excuses There are as many excuses to fall off the healthy wagon as there are days in a year. So if you’re going to stay on the wagon, you’re going to have to ignore the excuses and focus in on your goal: eating the right stuff. Which brings us to the next way to avoid falling off the wagon…

36

3) Stay Focused Being mindful of your healthy eating ways is easy during the first few days. After all, you’ve spent years eating one way and now you’re changing everything up. In a week or so, however, it can be difficult to remember your desire to eat healthily and even harder to remember why you made that decision. Stay focused on your choices and why you made them to stay strapped tightly on the wagon. 4) Get on the Right Wagon Every person’s health goals and expectations are different. If you hop on a healthy eating wagon for the first time in your life and expect to shed 30 pounds in a week, you’re going to be disappointed. Setting appropriate goals will help you stay on the wagon and help you make the next goal, as your wagon gets easier and easier to ride to the finish line. 5) Avoid Naysayers Always struggled with your weight? Tried

every diet plan known to man without success? Then you’re going to have a lot of folks who scoff at your desire to eat healthily. Let them scoff on their own and find new friends if you have to. Once your lifestyle changes start to pay off, strut by the folks who said they’ll believe you’re serious about healthy eating when they see results and watch their jaws drop. 6) Stay Away from Triggers The reason healthy eating is difficult for so many is that unhealthy eating tastes so good! Understanding this and understanding when you most want unhealthy food options will help you stay on the healthy wagon. Have a hard time saying no to sweets at your best friend’s house? Invite him to your place or meet at the park. Eat everything in sight when you’re lonely? Give someone a phone call when no one is around. 7) Know How to Get Back On You should aim to stay on the healthy eating wagon all day every day. But you should also be ready when you fall off. While you can find any number of ways to get back on the wagon, the best is to just do it! Admit you goofed up, recommit yourself to healthy living, and start living the healthy life you deserve once again. Ready to take your fitness results to the next level? Call or email me today and we will get you started on an exercise programme that’s designed to deliver massive results. Come on, you deserve it! GIRAFFE GET THE TASTE FOR "We Can't Believe It's Not Pimms" during Wimbledon fortnight

I

t was game on for some fun at West Midland Safari Park, as staff faced the challenge to create an extra special 'fruit cup' to serve to their giraffe during Wimbledon fortnight. Whilst not really a match for the traditional tipple favoured by many, it was set to make a big impression on giraffes Lottie (3) and Henry (11) who both appeared to love the luscious concoction made from a combination of natural orange flavours and chopped fresh fruit. As was most fitting for a giraffe-sized portion, it was no less than mixed doubles all the way which were of course shaken, not stirred. Shelley Tudor, Head Giraffe Keeper, said, "When it comes to drinking, it could be said that giraffe are at a disadvantage since many of the 40

environments they originate from in the wild are arid. They then rely on moisture that is absorbed from leaves during cool nights and from coastal fog that covers part of desert regions. Where water is readily available, giraffe will often drink daily, bending their knees in an ungainly fashion enabling them to use their long neck to its best advantage to reach down to the water. The giraffe at West Midland Safari Park don't have to seek out refreshment in earnest, which is in plentiful supply in their night quarters and in the drive through giraffe paddock. However, giraffe are partial to sweet tastes and therefore purely as a limited edition that was only available on selected mornings during Wimbledon fortnight, they were treated to this extra-special fruit cocktail to start their day. Staff think that it's an ace idea to spoil the animals on such occasions". West Midland Safari Park is open daily until 6th November 2015. The standard admission price is £19.99 for adults, £14.99 for children 3-15 years and £17.99 for concessions. Admission includes the 4-mile self-drive safari, New Land of the Living Dinosaurs, Discovery Trail, Penguin Cove, Sea Lion Show, Twilight Cave, Creepy Crawlies, Seaquarium, friendly animal encounters, Mark O'Shea's Reptile World, African Village, Meerkat Mayhem, Walking with Lemurs and a free return ticket. BRING In The Plants Houseplants do more than make a room attractive. These living organisms interact with your body, mind and home in ways that enhance the quality of life.

B

reathing Easier When you breathe, your body takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. During photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This opposite pattern of gas use makes plants and people natural partners. Adding plants to interior spaces can increase oxygen levels. At night, photosynthesis ceases, and plants typically respire like humans, absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. A few plants - orchids, succulents and epiphytic bromeliads - do just the opposite, taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Place these plants in bedrooms to refresh air during the night.

Purifying Air Plants remove toxins from air - up to 87 percent of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) every 24 hours, according to NASA research. VOCs include substances like formaldehyde (present in rugs, vinyl, cigarette smoke and grocery bags), benzene and trichloroethylene (both found in man-made fibres, inks, solvents and paint). Benzene is commonly found in high concentrations in study settings, where books and printed papers abound. Improving Health Adding plants to hospital rooms speeds recovery rates of surgical patients, according to researchers at Kansas State University. Compared to patients in rooms without plants, patients in rooms with plants request less pain medication, have lower heart rates and blood pressure, experience less fatigue and anxiety, and are released from the hospital sooner.

Releasing Water As part of the photosynthetic and respiratory processes, plants release moisture vapour, which increases humidity of the air around them. Plants The Dutch Product Board for Horticulture release roughly 97 percent of the water they take in. commissioned a workplace study that discovered Place several plants together, and you can increase that adding plants to office settings decreases fatigue, the humidity of a room, which helps keeps respiratory distress at bay. Studies at the Agricultural colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu-like symptoms. In another study by the Agricultural University of Norway document that using plants in University of Norway, sickness rates fell by more interior spaces decreases the incidence of dry skin, than 60 percent in offices with plants. colds, sore throats and dry coughs. 42 To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Sharpening Focus A study at The Royal College of Agriculture in Cirencester, England, found that students demonstrate 70 percent greater attentiveness when they're taught in rooms containing plants. In the same study, attendance was also higher for lectures given in classrooms with plants. How Many Plants? The recommendations vary based on your goals. To improve health and reduce fatigue and stress, place one large plant (8-inch diameter pot or larger)

(6)

(7)

every 129 square feet. In office or classroom settings, position plants so each person has greenery in view. To purify air, use 15 to 18 plants in 6 to 8-inch diameter pots for an 1,800-square-foot house. That's roughly one larger plant every 100 square feet. Achieve similar results with two smaller plants (4 to 5-inch pots). Remember that for the best success with any houseplant, you need to match the right plant to the right growing conditions.
