Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Blondes are back ... ! Lynn and Judy were doing some carpentry work on a Habitat for Humanity House. Lynn, nailing down a house siding, would reach into her nail pouch, pull out a nail and either toss it over her shoulder or nail it in. Judy, was curious and asked, "Why are you throwing those nails away?" Lynn explained, "When I pull a nail out of my pouch, about half of them have the head on the wrong end so I throw them away" Judy was furious, and yelled, "You moron! Those nails aren't defective ... they're for the other side of the house!"

They had gone to see 'Closed for the Winter.' A blonde was driving home and got caught in a really bad hailstorm. Her car was covered with dents, so the next day she took it to a repair shop. The shop owner saw that she was a blonde, so he decided to have some fun. He told her to go home and blow into the tail pipe really hard, and all the dents would pop out. So, the blonde went home, got down on her hands and knees and started blowing into her tailpipe. Nothing happened. So she blew harder, but still nothing happened.

Her blonde roommate saw her and asked, "What are you doing?" The first blonde told her what the repairman had said, but it wasn't working.

Hello and welcome to the Christmas issue of
Grapevine TThe Worcestershire
Once again another year has flown by and we'll soon be welcoming in 2015. This month, being the Christmas issue, we have a couple of delicious Christmas recipes for you to try, and if you're looking for somewhere to get your Christmas tree, then pop along to Abbey Road Christmas Trees in Evesham where you'll find a fantastic selection of home-grown trees to choose from. If you're thinking of sprucing up the house with a new fireplace, then TC Fireplaces in Pershore is the place to go, and Christmas dinner just wouldn't be right without a cheese platter to round off the meal, so go along to The Cheeseboard in Malvern where you'll find a wonderful selection of cheeses. I hope 2014 has been a good year for all of you, and I'd like to thank everyone - advertisers, writers and readers who have supported the magazine, both as The Villager and now as The Worcestershire Grapevine. And now all that's left is for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Auld Lang Syne C
elebrating the coming of the New Year has been a tradition dating back as far as 2000 BC to the Babylonians who celebrated it on the day of the Vernal Equinox in the middle of March. The Romans recognised 1st March as New Year’s Day in their calendar, then with the advent of the Gregorian calendar in the time of Pope Gregory XIII, New Year's Day became 1st January, which is why as Big Ben strikes midnight on 31st December, we now sing ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot’, courtesy of Robert Burns, and wish all around us a Happy New Year. New Year, like all holidays and festivals, has its traditions, the singing of Auld Lang Syne being one of the most well-known. The song was written by Robert Burns in 1788, but only gained real popularity in the 19th century with Scottish immigrants to Canada and America, and over time has become what could be described as the New Year anthem. Other traditions and superstitions associated with New Year including First Footing. Originating in Scotland, this tradition involves a male, preferably tall and dark, being the first to enter the house on New Year’s Day. The First Footer generally carries gifts – coins, coal, salt, bread, drink (preferably whisky) – or a combination of these, presenting financial prosperity, warmth, flavour, food, and good cheer. Early Christians believed the first day of the New Year should be spent reflecting on past mistakes and resolving to improve oneself in the year to come, which is no doubt the origin of New Year’s resolutions – those good intentions that few of us ever manage to keep! In Colombia, walk around your block with an empty suitcase if you want a year full of travel. If you’re Dutch 10

then bonfires of Christmas trees on the street and launching fireworks is your thing: the fires purge the Old Year and welcome in the New Year. In Spain the ritual on New Year's Eve is to eat twelve grapes at midnight. This is meant to secure twelve happy months in the coming year One famous tradition in America is the dropping of the New Year ball in Times Square in New York at 11:59pm. Thousands gather to watch the ball take one minute to descend, arriving at exactly midnight. The original ball was built from iron and wood, lit with one hundred incandescent light bulbs, weighed 700 pounds, measured 5 feet in diameter and was hoisted onto the building's flagpole by a team of six men. Once it hit the roof of the building, the ball was designed to complete an electric circuit to light a 5-foot tall sign indicating the New Year, and trigger a fireworks show. The first ever "ball drop" was held on 31st December 1907, welcoming in the year 1908. A more recent tradition here in the UK is the gathering of the crowds on the South Bank in London to watch the spectacular fireworks and London Eye lit up like you’ve never seen it. As with New York, thousands of people from around the world make their way through the course of the day to stand along the banks of the Thames to watch the firework display and welcome in the New Year with a truly rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne. So wherever you are and whatever your traditions, when the clock strikes midnight on 31st December, raise your glass and “… tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne.”

The Beauty and History of Glencoe article & photographs by Pamela Green
A
ncient volcanoes, ice age glaciers, the scouring of the wind and the rain have shaped the mountains of Glencoe over millions of years. It is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Britain and is bounded on all sides by ancient rock faces which reach a thousand metres and seem to touch the sky. This is a land who’s very rocks have history that stretch back to a time before man, when the only living things were primitive creatures which lived in the sea. It was over two million years ago that glaciers and ice sheets sculptured these mountains. This was in a time when the ice age gripped the earth. Eventually the ice sheet melted and the mountains became wet and mild. But the ice sheet returned and the temperature dropped again. Once more the glaciers formed and it scoured out the beautiful valley of Glencoe. The views in this area are spectacular and you can even get a breathtaking sight of Ben Nevis. The underlying rocks provide soil for some of the rarest plants in Britain: Water Avens, a delicate bell shaped flower, and Dwarf Willow are some of the species found; Parsley Fern, and Morning Dew, commonly known as Asters just grow wild. Glencoe forest is home for many lower plants, such as Lichens, Fungi,
14
Ferns, Mosses and Liverworts. Flowering plants include Primrose, Bluebell and Wood Anemones. Summer visiting songbirds include Redstart, Pied Flycatcher, and Wood Warbler. You may also see Snow Bunting birds, Buzzards and the Great Spotted Woodpecker. The rocky terrain also provides natural habitat for many other animals, and insects. You may be lucky to see Red and Roe Deer and Mountain Hares. Glencoe Forest is working with the Scottish Woodland Alliance, local schools, communities and visitors to encourage them to a better understanding of woodland environment. The Salachan Burn flows through the heart of the woodland and keen observers may see the Atlantic Salmon and the Brown Trout, swimming up to their spawning grounds. If you could spend an hour panning you may find a few flakes of native Scottish gold. They call it Appin gold and it was used in the Scottish crown jewels. Glencoe also has some rare species of plants. These are used in medicines and have been given extra protection. Today with easier transport and more leisure time even more people visit Glencoe for walking and climbing holidays, but the increasing numbers also bring an added pressure to manage the landscape, protect its habitat and safeguard the wildlife.

o what's the best cheese to buy at Christmas time? There are some fantastic cheeses out there at this time of year and some are very seasonal. So let's start of with some good basic cheeses: Cropwell Bishop Stilton, Snowdonia Black Bomber, Hereford Hop, Hawes Wensleydale & Cranberry and a nice soft Somerset Brie. For something a bit different why not try some Cave Aged Cheddar Gorge, matured in the
Christmas Cheese Menu caves in Cheddar - there are only 20 shops in the UK allowed to sell it. Or how about some Irish Cashel Blue, made in Tipperary in Ireland, a soft pressed creamy blue cheese. As for a seasonal cheese this time of year, between November and January you can get a French Vacherin Mont d’Or - a soft creamy cheese with a wonderful sweet taste from the summer milking. All of these cheeses are

available at The Cheeseboard along with 70 others. At this time of the year we are always very busy with cheeses, cooked meats, local wines and ciders, as well as our Christmas hampers made to order with delivery to anywhere in the UK for just £6.95. OVER 50 YEARS of compassion
PREPAID FUNERAL PLANS: WARNING!
I
n the current financial climate Prepaid Funeral Plans can make good economic sense, as it can safe guard against some of the rising funeral expenses for the future. It can also give the client peace of mind that their wishes are recorded and will be carried out, thus saving relatives the anxiety and expense at an emotional time. Often Plans are sold to the client who believes ALL future costs are guaranteed – in the small print they are invariably not! However, the way that some of these Funeral Plans are being sold is something to be cautious about. Because of their popularity, funeral plans are big business and it seems everyone wants a share, using all sorts of methods to get a sale. It’s not just an advertisement in your local newspaper or glossy magazine
18
anymore, you can be approached in all sorts of ways; leaflet drops, making a will with your local solicitor or taking out insurance, but I think the most disrespectful way is the COLD CALL. Since a large number of clients often think about such a Plan following the death of a loved one this can and does catch out the most vulnerable. What I really want to bring to your attention is that those companies that use these methods are NOT funeral directors. They are businesses out to gain revenue by acting as middle men, taking your money and limited instructions and securing these instructions with an allied funeral director – often that funeral director may not be your preferred choice. In some cases the client is allowed to nominate a funeral director of their choosing, but
the fee offered to this funeral director is usually at a much reduced rate than what you as the client will have paid for the plan. This makes it difficult for the nominated firm to accept the instructions without creating a financial loss. It is not uncommon for a client to pay one of these firms £3600.00 and for the funeral director to be offered £2400.00. This is fact and has actually happened to us. The truth is, if you are considering taking out a funeral prepayment plan, then do it with the funeral director you want to carry out your funeral! Otherwise you might pay more than you need too, may not have the funeral you wanted and may not be able to use the trusted and respected funeral director that has been a part of the community and served your family for generations. As professionally qualified Funeral Directors we can approach ANY plan provider not just one! It’s simple – we choose the best one for you and control the costs too. So, if you’d like some advice, without obligation, regarding Funeral Prepayment Plans then do give me a call on 01386 552141. Why pay more than you need to for the services of someone you don’t know! Girlguiding Worcestershire : Iceland Jamboree 2014
F
rom Saturday 19th July until Thursday 31st July, nine girls (aged 14-17) and two leaders took part in an international jamboree in the north of Iceland.
After an on Saturday 19th July, the group left Gatwick on their flight to Keflavik International Airport, 40 minutes from Reykjavik. We were met at the airport by a member of the Jamboree committee and were taken to the Scout Accommodation in Reykjavik. On the 20th July we got the bus to Akureyri, where the camp was to take place. The girls made good use of their time on the coach by making friends with a scout group from London and another group from Denmark. On arrival at the camp we a put up the tents that be our home for the week. The theme of the camp was “In Tune with Time and the site was split up into Past, Present and Future with activities that reflected these. The girls took part in these with great relish and did a variety of activities including climbing, building a light box and roasting a whole lamb on an open fire. In addition to these the group went on an overnight hike up to a cabin in the mountains. The difficult terrain, combined with heavy bags, gave us all a challenge but we were very proud to reach the top. The Friday of the camp was spent experiencing the town of Akureyri. On the way we had to make a splint for a member of our group from whatever we could find, before practicing our first aid skills in using a stretcher. Whilst the closing ceremony was a very sad time as we had to say goodbye to all our new friends, we knew that
we had made some fantastic memories that would stay with us forever. Despite our sadness that the Jamboree was over, we had an exciting few days to look forward to. On the Monday we took part in a walking tour of Reykjavik where we saw a number of interesting buildings, including the parliament: Iceland is famous for having the oldest Parliament in the world (though the present building only dates from 1881). Monday also saw the long awaited trip to the Blue Lagoon, a naturally formed hot spring spa. Much needed after seven days at camp! On the Tuesday we were booked in to go whale watching. Sadly there was a distinct dearth of whales, but we did get to see some dolphins and some puffins. Our final day was spent on a tour of the Golden Circle where we saw the Geysirs and Gullfoss waterfall; each beautiful and awe-inspiring in its own way. The day finished with a stop at the Fontana Wellness centre spa where we got to try some rye bread, newly baked in the hot sands, before relaxing in the naturally heated pools. The Jamboree itself was a perfect blend of organised activities and periods of time where the girls could do walk-in sessions, or simply spend time with their new friends. We would all like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past year - such an amazing experience would not have been possible without it.

Bishampton History Society: Mystery Soldier named!
T
he name of a mystery soldier who appeared at the original dedication of Bishampton’s war memorial has been named – following an appeal published in the Worcester News and Evesham Journal from Bishampton History Society. A reader who saw the article notified the newspaper that George Farmer is one of two previously unnamed figures who appeared on the right hand side of photograph in the Society’s collection commemorating the original installation of the war memorial in 1931. Charles Rigg, who is undertaking research with Peter Jesson for the Society as part of its Heritage Lottery Funded WW1 project The Great War and its impact on a rural Worcestershire village* said: “We were really pleased to be able to put a name to at least one of the soldiers on the photograph. It transpired that we are already in touch with his grandson whom we have tracked down through Ancestry.co.uk. Further research we carried out revealed that George was in the Royal Sussex Regiment and that he had been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty when under fire in battle on land.” Peter and Charles have already made useful contacts in Eckington, Cheltenham, Oxford and York via Ancestry.co.uk to help 26
them in their quest for information relating to former Bishampton soldiers and their families. One person from Chipping Norton who saw the article in the Evesham Journal and contacted the Society has documents belonging to his grandfather, Lawrence Ballard, a wallet with a bullet hole right through it, and all his medals. Subsequent research found that he had spent nine months in a Glasgow hospital before being discharged and being awarded the Silver Medal. Mike Rickard, chair of the Society, said: “This is exactly the kind of information we are seeking to try to put more context and meaning into our research and to link those who served to current day families.

“We are still looking for the identity of the other person in the photograph, as well as seeking more information on the remaining soldiers* of the 53 whose names appear on the war memorial. We would ask anyone who can help – even in the slightest way – to contact us.” *Names of the soldiers for which information is needed: Andrews Harry Louis Ballard Percy Ballard Louis Fisher George Thomas Fisher Joseph Haines Charles Harris J. 7 Ways to Reduce Body Fat
G
ot body fat? While fat loss can be quite frustrating, these 7 strategies are proven to help you slim down fast ... something that we all need with Christmas approaching.
impossible to reduce body fat on days when alcohol is consumed. That should be incentive enough for you to put down your glass and reach for some water.
1. Drink a Gallon of Water Water is always a crucial element for proper bodily functions and even more so when fat loss is your goal. The conversion of fat into energy takes place in your liver and this process requires that you be well hydrated.
3. Do a Variety of Aerobics Variety is key when it comes to the aerobics side of your routine. Getting in calorie-burning activities is crucial to quickly eliminating fat stores. We no longer believe that long cardio sessions are the holy grail of fat loss – but getting your body moving with calorie-burning activities is a wonderful way to intensify your fat loss results.
Drinking a gallon of water over the course of your day is a wonderful goal to aim for. This goal is easily met when you get into the habit of sipping water throughout the day, coupled with drinking a full glass before meals, upon waking and before bed. 2. Cut out Alcohol This fat loss tip is always met with groans (especially difficult over the festive season), but despite its unpopularity it remains one of the most effective. The first reason that alcohol should be cut out in order to lose fat is that it’s filled with empty calories. These are simple sugars that taste great but add up quickly as stored fat in all the wrong places. The second reason that alcohol should be cut out is that the simple energy that your body derives from the alcohol will be used as energy long before your fat stores are tapped, making it 28
The great thing about aerobic activities is that these can and should be fun! Hiking, biking, swimming, jogging, brisk walking – any activity that requires you to move your body for a reasonable period of time and break a nice sweat in the process. 4. Cut out Processed Junk This is one of the easiest ways to quickly and effectively reduce body fat, and yet it is met with such resistance. Why? Why is it so difficult for us to give up our packaged, processed snacks and treats? This is one obstacle that prevents most people from achieving the body that they want. The best tip for successfully getting processed junk food out of your life is to have wholesome alternatives on hand while removing the junk
To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk
food from your home. If you are a late night snacker, then be prepared by having fresh fruit, sliced veggies, plain Greek yogurt or other wholesome snack replacements on hand. When your belly is full of wholesome snacks, it’s hard to care too much about the processed junk you missed out on. And soon you’ll learn to love how lean and energetic these healthier foods make you feel. 5. Lift Weights You might consider this to be pretty obvious, but many people are still resistant to the idea that resistance training leads to fat loss. If you find yourself puzzled by the idea that lifting heavy things will reduce the layer of fat on your body, then allow me to explain. The act of lifting weights causes those targeted muscles to stimulate new muscle tissue growth. Now this doesn’t mean that your muscles are going to get noticeably larger (relax, ladies!) but it does mean that your muscle tissue will become tighter and more toned. The increase in muscle translates to a higher metabolism, which means that your body will naturally burn fat faster and more efficiently. 6. Use HIIT High Intensity Interval Training is a method that has been quite popular in the past decade – and for good reason. This advanced form of aerobics, when done correctly, is one of the most effective methods for burning fat.
HIIT is achieved by performing short, intense bursts of aerobic intervals between less intense bouts of aerobics. For example, 2 minutes of walking followed by a 30 second sprint, done for 20 minutes. 7. Work with a Fitness Professional When your car needs new brakes, you take it the mechanic. When you wake up with a fever and sore throat, you go to the doctor. When your hair gets too long, you go to the hairdresser to get it cut. When you need to reduce body fat, you ... try to do it all on your own? That makes no sense. We all have our areas of expertise and we rely on each other when in need. My expertise is fat loss. I’m passionate about getting my clients results, and my programs have been proven effective. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my article in ‘The Villager’ each month, I really appreciate your feedback. Here’s to a wonderful, happy and healthy 2015! Please don't leave older cats out in the cold this winter ...
H
Malibu
Rumble
ere at Evesham Cats Protection we have a number of cats that have been overlooked for various reasons. We are keen to get these cats in homes before the winter arrives. The majority of the cats are black and so have not been chosen due to the colour of their coats, however they are still good companions. Some of the cats are older and would appreciate a warm and loving home.; many of them have been waiting for months for a new home, so if you are considering adopting a cat, please consider one of these featured:
Erina and Edwina are 7-month old sisters, with lots of energy.
Stripe & Sun Malibu is a 3-year-old male who is steady and ready for a new home.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
Rumble would love a family home. Stripe, Sun and Shine all came from the same family and have been waiting since the summer for a new home.
All cats neutered, vaccinated & microchipped. Adoption fee applies. Evesham Cats Protection would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers for all their hard work managing the rescue 365 days a year. Also a big thank you to everyone who shows their support to the cats. Without everyone working together there would many more cats in need of help.

Fresh Peach Cobbler
White Christmas
Take advantage of the season's peaches with this cobbler which lets the flavour shine through, high-lighted by lemon and cinnamon for a light and tart treat.
This popular Australian treat is an easy no-bake slice. It's very sweet and rich so cut it into small pieces to serve.
Serves 6
Ingredients 100mg caster sugar 1 tablespoon cornflour ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon 680g fresh peaches, peeled, stoned and sliced 1 teaspoon lemon juice 125g plain flour 1 tablespoon caster sugar 1½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 3 tablespoon butter 120ml milk Method ● Preheat oven to 200 C, Gas 6. ●
Combine caster sugar, cornflour and cinnamon in a large saucepan. Stir in peaches and lemon juice, tossing until peaches are evenly coated.
●
Cook filling over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture thickens and boils for one minute..
●
Pour mixture into an ungreased two-litre baking dish and keep hot in oven while you make topping.
●
Combine flour, caster sugar, baking powder and salt in mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly and rub in margarine to crumb. Add milk and stir.
●
● 34
Remove peach filling from oven and drop topping onto peaches in 6 equal-size spoonfuls. Return cobbler to oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until topping is golden brown.
Ingredients 250g Copha (available online from www.sanza.co.uk) OR 250g white chocolate 140g icing sugar 180g sultanas 100g chopped glace cherries 100g finely chopped dried apricots 85g desiccated coconut 100g full cream milk powder 40g rice crispies Method ● Line an 18cm by 28cm cake pan with baking paper. ●

●
Add melted Copha (or white chocolate) to bowl and stir until well combined.
●
Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan.
●
Firmly press the mixture into the pan using the back of a spoon.
●

West Mercia
POLICE
SERVING - PROTECTING - MAKING THE DIFFERENCE
Police Launch Emergency Contact Disc As Alternative to Tax Disc Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police are pleased to announce the launch of our tax disc replacement: the Emergency Contact Disc. The Emergency Contact Disc contains next of kin contact details and medical alert information for the driver. In the event of a medical emergency or road traffic collision that renders the occupants unable to communicate, a first responder will be able to obtain vital information that is not otherwise accessible at the scene. The disc can be cut out and placed into the now otherwise redundant tax disc holder, the information sections fold inwards so it would not be viewed by passers by. PC Dave Wise, the West Mercia officer behind the idea said, The information within the disc could be vital to save lives or quickly locate a casualty's next of kin, something that can be time consuming at the scene of a serious incident. All information is optional and the blank discs can be used to add customised information, or attach a passport photo to help link the information to the right person. If there is more than one regular driver or even regular passengers, consider printing multiple discs and add a photo or description of each person. The Emergency Contact Disc can be used alongside existing medical alert products like bracelets and necklaces. PC Wise added "If people have concerns about security of information, they can omit certain details. We would advise that if the next of kin address is the same as the driver's address, it may be sensible to leave this portion blank.
42
The information within the disc would give little or no information away that could aid potential criminals and any slight risk is far outweighed by the benefits". The Emergency Contact Disc can be downloaded from the West Mercia Police website www. westmercia.police.uk. The questions & feedback that we need to acknowledge or explain have been: Q. Are my details visible to the public? A. No, folding the disc with the information within keeps it private inside your vehicle. Q. Can criminals use this for ID theft? A. The information contained within is easily accessible elsewhere and is entirely optional to include in the disc. Do not include anything you feel uncomfortable sharing. Q. What if there are multiple drivers? A. Consider printing several discs to store in the vehicle and include passport photos or descriptions for each driver. Q. Why not just use my phone or wallet to hold these details? A. At the scene of an accident it is difficult to access personal property or overcome smartphone security to find critical information. The disc displays the same information clearly and prominently. Q. Can I customise this disc for my own service? A.Yes, contact corporate comms or david.s.wise@ westmercia.pnn.police.uk to obtain a customisable version, however the nationally recognisable format is important to ensure a first responder recognised the disc as a NOK & medical alert info card.

Local business lends a paw to
Dogs for the Disabled
A
local Warwickshire business has contributed to raising up to £30,000 for an assistance dog charity after designing and contributing to a national fundraising event.
Creative mailing specialist Jigsaw CCS conceptualised, designed and delivered a number of ‘bone appetite’ breakfast kits for this year’s Big Dogs Breakfast, to help raise money for Dogs for the Disabled. The fundraising event, which offers a twist on traditional coffee mornings, saw a number of breakfast ‘gatherings’ being held throughout September to help Dogs for the Disabled create more life-changing partnerships. Event hosts registered to receive a unique Big Dogs Breakfast kit, which contained event invites, paper cups, napkins, bunting, posters and balloons, with all proceeds going to the charity. As well as holding their very own Big Dogs Breakfast in Leamington, which raised over £700 for the charity,
Jigsaw CCS was also influential in making the entire project happen in the first place. The company worked very closely with Dogs for the Disabled and charity sponsor James Wellbeloved to design and hand prepare one thousand Breakfast kits that were sent out to fundraisers in advance of their events. This is the second time that the company has been chosen to create the Big Dogs Breakfast kits, however Jigsaw CCS have provided ongoing support to the campaign as it has grown over recent years. Jigsaw CCS Operations Director, Lorna Harling, explained: “We work with a number of charities but our creative relationship with Dogs for the Disabled has really stood the test of time. Charities often have reduced expenditure, yet quality in the end products cannot be compromised. The Big Dogs Breakfast is a fantastic fundraising initiative that is becoming more popular every year and it proves that direct mail doesn’t always have to be just about promotion, but can used in more creative situations too.” Dogs for the Disabled works to

provide increased independence to people facing increased challenges through the support of a dog. The charity trains assistance dogs for children and adults with a range of conditions including physical disabilities, autism and most recently dementia. Dogs for the Disabled also provides workshops to help families affected by autism explore the helping potential of a pet dog. The charity holds its Big Dogs Breakfast month every September, this year, hundreds of events will happen nationwide. Communications Manager Sarah Watson, who attended Jigsaw CCS’ own breakfast, explained how invaluable the creative breakfast kits are. “It was fantastic to be able to show our support to Jigsaw CCS’s own Big Dogs Breakfast. They have worked hard on a number of campaigns to support us as a charity and the work we do. We have worked closely with Jigsaw CCS for over 10 years now, and as creative mailing experts they truly understand our requirements. Lorna and her team work closely with us on a number of projects and deliver truly fantastic results. The breakfast boxes looked really good and were conceptualised, designed and packaged in a really professional way,” Sarah Watson said. The money raised through Big Dogs Breakfast events will help Dogs for the Disabled train more dogs and transform the lives of people facing huge challenges everyday.
