Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy
of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham
& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

And welcome to the June/July issue of the Grapevine. Don't forget to keep this copy for two months, as our next magazine will be the August edition. So, here we are, summer at last, although judging by the clouds I'm looking at, someone forgot to tell the weather! Oh well, it wouldn't be a proper British summer without the rain! Fingers crossed we get a few nice days so you can try out the delicious barbeque trout recipe we have for you this month. As always, we've got plenty for you to read and enjoy in this month's issue and several new advertisers. Make sure you diarise the Welland Steam Rally, Pershore Midsummer Brass, and of course, the Pershore Plum Festival. Are you thinking of getting a new companion? Then perhaps you could offer a home to Johna, a beautiful mature black cat (very good luck to have a black cat!) who has been waiting for a new home for some time.

Breathtaking Avignon! D
o you remember as a child at school learning to sing the Avignon song? “Sur le pont d'Avignon l'on y danse l'on y danse . . .” I do, and I was amazed on a recent visit to Avignon, France, to find it printed on post cards. As I toured around the city I found myself humming the tune and it brought back many childhood memories. The city of Avignon has been inhabited for about 2000 years and has survived the Neolithic age, Greek period, Roman period, and the Barbarian invasion. Eventually Avignon became the capital of the Christian world. In 1309 a truly historic event took place when the Papal Court was moved from Rome to Avignon and it was then that the course of the city’s history took a new and exciting turn. Seven popes, all French, reigned at Avignon, and under their rule, the city was fortified and a huge castle built. This palace took around thirty years to build and today it is known as the Papal Palace, and what a magnificent place it is. Sadly the Pope no longer resides there and is 8
now back in Rome, but the palace is preserved as a magnificent type of museum and well worth a visit. I was delighted to see that the city was not only beautiful but also interesting, with lots of history. The tale that intrigued me most was that of the St Benezet Bridge, or I should say, what is left of it. The story goes, that Beniot, a young Shepard heard a voice telling him to go to Avignon and build a bridge over the Rhone river. When he arrived at the city he was vested with miraculous strength, amazingly he lifted an enormous rock and laid it on the bank of the river. From this base, enthusiastic crowds helped erect the 22 arches of the bridge, which measured 900 metres long, and Beniot became Saint Benezet. During the siege of Avignon, Louis VIII, ordered the bridge to be completely destroyed, but his orders were never completely carried out and some of the bridge remained. Later reconstruction work was carried out but the unpredictability of the Rhone has caused much damage. Today only 4 arches of the bridge, and the Saint
Nicholas’ Chapel at the entrance, still remain. Avignon is a city with so many breathtaking sights to see. To save your aching feet, a quick and easy way to get around is to take the tour train, this is open and you can get on and off as you please. There is also a Rhone river cruise where you will see all the best sights. The architecture is breathtaking, so, if you are ever in the South West of France, Avignon is not a place you should bypass, it is well worth a visit.

Engineering Success P
ershore High School students Victoria Trotman (Year 13), Bryony Meek, Harry Dunn, Maddie Bourn, Rachel Hall and Amelia Stanton (Year 12) went head to head with nearly 250 local students all displaying their innovative solutions to ‘real world of work’ problems at their Celebration and Assessment Day in April at the Cranmore Park Exhibition Suite, Shirley, Solihull. The Celebration Day was the final part of this year’s Engineering Education Scheme (EES) a national programme, providing talented Year 12/13 technology, maths and science students' hands-on experience of engineering with the sponsorship and help of local companies. For the past five months, professional engineers from the partner organisations have been working with the teams of students, and their teachers on real engineering ‘challenges’. We were delighted to work with Bosch Thermo- technology, Worcester, our mentor Mihai Mican (Oil Development Engineer) was very keen to further develop greater links with our school, and to communicate his infectious passion for engineering. Back in September the students were presented with an engineering challenge of designing and building an oil tank level sensor capable of measuring oil
levels and communicating it wirelessly into the owner’s home. The six students faced numerous challenges over the duration of the scheme, but through a great deal of determination discovered the solutions required. One of their highlights was a three-day residential stay at Birmingham University, where they were able to work with lecturers and employ their machining facilities, a fantastic opportunity to experience university life. Neil Harding (Head of Technology) said "It was an exceptionally challenging project but their creativity and determination to learn new skills was of real credit to them. I firmly believe that the experience has excited and enthused them, which of course, was one of the main objectives behind the scheme. I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the superb work from our students and congratulate them on the first class outcomes created. Also I would like to express my gratitude to Mihai who were wonderful engineering mentors to the group and were an inspiration throughout the project.” The Engineering Education Scheme is part of The Royal Academy of Engineering’s BEST Programme, challenging students from all over the UK to solve industrial problems set by local companies.

I
‘All in an April Evening, April airs were abroad’
t had been a busy day, so my daily walk was postponed until early evening. The April airs were cool, it felt more wintery than spring. April is a fickle month. I met no lambs on the road, but they were not far away. In the fields below I could hear their plaintiff cries; they’d wandered too far from their dam’s. Frontal clouds scudded across the sky on a brisk northerly wind, casting shadows and golden light across the rain washed landscape. My walk took me to quieter parts of the Hills and finding myself surrounded by all the spring flowers blooming simultaneously, I paused to take in their fragrance, the scenery and to listen. From the hawthorn thickets, chiffchaffs were merrily ‘chiffchaffing’ away, and in the distance the mellow call of the cuckoo. A russet and blue flash from the dead bracken confirmed the redstarts were back too; birds that give tropical colour to the English countryside. I was the intruder here. An outsider looking in on a world where these tiny, courageous birds respond to natural laws which drive them to make two epic journeys a year, Despite the Arctic winds, the migrant birds were a sure sign that summer was on the way. It’s a worry though, when they arrive, after flying thousands of
12
miles, and find the weather so cold. I wondered if there would be enough insects for them. It’s been a topsy turvy year so far. No frosts or snow all winter, both in spring. As you know, I saw no red polls during the winter and likewise siskins. The redpolls came and went in March. The siskins turned up in April, flying back to their breeding grounds and stopping off at my fast food outlet. I’d love to know where they eventually end up, but unlike the intrepid Sacha Dent from Slimbridge, who will be following the Bewick swans in a paramotor, (a paraglider with an engine) I’m not intending to take flight and follow them. Their destination will remain in my imagination. Will it be a blazing June? Writing this in April, watching the snowflakes drifting past the window, its hard to imagine summer will come at all. Yet the spring flowers will fade, replaced by those of summer. By the time you read this, the chiffchaffs, the redstarts, siskins and redpolls will be busy rearing the next generation. And the cuckoo? That’s another story, but somewhere on the Hills, there will be pairs of small birds feeding an insatiable monster in their nests. Photo and article by Geraldine Holbourn

Pershore Midsummer Brass
Saturday 2nd July 2016
W
e would like to mark The Queen's 90th Birthday and long reign.
Pershore Midsummer Brass, 2nd July this year, is one of the biggest events in the Pershore Calendar. The event brings together over 30 brass bands to entertain the public for 12 hours with a variety of music from jazz to classical, from traditional to avant-garde. There are bands from the highest echelons of music who have gained success in competitions around the UK to those whose delight is making music without any desire to compete; all enjoying Pershore Midsummer Brass as a unique event in their calendar. There is no competition other than providing the audience with a taste of music to remember. This year the Committee, having taken a sounding from the bands, has taken the boldest of moves in slashing the price of the ticket to just ÂŁ5, for one year only thus making the event accessible to all and with the fervent hope that many more will come to enjoy the day. Many people have not entered in to the delights of brass band music nor felt the depth of emotion which can be engendered by the richness of the tone, the depth of 14
feeling or the artistry which goes in to their music. Brass Band music should not be considered either a minority interest or a niche area of music having provided sound tracks for many films - not only the amazing Brassed Off, (whose music is ever popular). There are many volunteers who come on the day to steward the event who act as the oil which ensures the free flow of the public and the bands going in and coming out of the venues, and without whom the day would not be able to happen. Why not consider joining us for a couple of hours while enjoying being part of the success. Contact us via the website www. pershoremid summerbrass.org.uk and we will be delighted to add you to our list and of course give all the information, help and advice needed. The four venues, Pershore Abbey, the Baptist Church, the beer garden marquee behind the Angel Inn, and Chapman Court are once again booked, ready and waiting to welcome everyone. On this anniversary of Shakespeare we could say "If music be the food of love - Play on". We are looking forward to seeing you there.

A Taste Of… BRAZIL B
razil is the 5th largest country in the world. The official language is Portuguese. Also, Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world and the only one in the Americas. This country is the world’s biggest coffee producer. Brazil’s climate varies, with the northeast being the driest part of the country. Brazilian cuisine has numerous devotees, worldwide. I searched for a reputable company that has authentic food and dishes, which goes the ‘extra mile’ to ensure a very memorable dining occasion, for all. Award-winning Preto has several Brazilian steakhouses in London and some out of London, with more planned. Halal options are available at the Queensway venue, too. The Preto philosophy is to provide a dining experience unlike any other, in a friendly, vibrant atmosphere. The meats, including beef, sirloin and rump steaks, plus chicken, etc, are slow-roasted over an authentic Brazilian churrascaria, capturing individual flavour. Up to 15 different cuts of spit-roasted meats are continuously carved at table, by Passadors. Over 18 dishes are available also, on the gourmet salad and hot bars, including rice, pastas, fresh-cut vegetables, plus Brazilian side dishes.
16
A double-sided disc controls the pace of the meal. The green side of the disc indicates to the Passadors to bring out skewers, carving the sizzling meats at the table, all cut to your request. The disc’s red side indicates to pause or stop. The Passador will offer the meats again when the disc is turned over and the green side is shown, uppermost. Desserts finish the dining occasion off, perfectly. Chocolate desserts are very popular, as is tiramisu, from an enticing display. There is a very good selection of wines/drinks available, too – something for all tastes. Both Danilo (Passador) and Bruno have great skills, to ensure satisfaction, to all. A really interesting concept to enjoy – very much so. Exceptionally good value for money. Brazilian entertainment is featured regularly (see website for details). Loyalty cards and gift vouchers are available – perhaps surprise someone special? The Rodizio Grill Dining Experience – Truly amazing! Email: info@rodiziopreto.co.uk www.rodiziopreto.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Four Ways to Increase Flexibility
Y
ou eat the right foods, drink the right drinks and exercise regularly. In other words, you’re strong and healthy. There is only one hole in your overall good health: you’re as flexible as a piece of plywood. But there’s good news! You don’t have to stay inflexible your entire life. With the right steps, you can improve your flexibility, which will make life that much better. Ready to get started building a more flexible you? Here’s how: Roll Before For many years, it was common practice to stretch before working out. In recent years, folks have ditched that advice for something better: lightly performing whatever you plan to do. Going to run? Walk and then jog before getting into a run. For those who want to take their routines to the stretchy limit, it’s time to use a foam roller. With a foam roller, you work to gently stretch your muscles before working them out, and better yet, you stretch them out safely. Essentially a massage for your muscles, foam rolling helps
20
your muscles relax and stretch. This, in turn, allows your entire muscle to be worked out in the gym afterward and prevents an already tight muscle from growing tighter through your exercise routine. Once you knock out a little foam rolling, the time is right for a round of body-weight exercises or light activity before going full force. Go All the Way As you exercise, you can help your flexibility by working throughout your entire range of motion. Initially, you may have a harder time squatting your full range of motion, but sticking with it will allow your muscles to work all the way and will lead to their being more flexible. To get to where you can squat or perform other exercises as deep as your body allows, you will probably want to reduce the amount of weight you use. As your body grows accustomed to going through a fuller range of motion, you can increase the weight and enjoy improved flexibility. Stretch Afterwards Your routine winds down and
your muscles feel tight and want to stay that way. Folks who are new to working out often enjoy the feeling. It lets them know their body has worked hard, and so they allow the tightness to remain as they leave the gym and return to their daily routines. However, this is when your stretches become most important. By taking 10 minutes to slowly stretch, you can take a huge step toward your overall flexibility. A good post-workout stretch will focus on the areas worked during your routine, but will provide a little stretching for the entire body. You can also finish your stretching with more foam rolling if you have time, as this will help further your flexibility goals. Take It Slow When stretching for increased flexibility, you may be tempted to push it as far as you can. But don’t give in. Instead, you should relax and take the slow and easygoing path to flexibility. Paddock Weeds ... Everyone's Nightmare!
C
ontrolling weeds on your paddocks and fields can be a nightmare. Most of the time is spent pulling them, spraying them and often out of sheer desperation – cutting them maintenance, however spraying them at the right time of the year goes a huge way to minimising their growth and proliferation. As summer approaches consideration has to be given to spraying off some of the common weeds. Need some advice? Well, help is at hand from local company, JM Paddock & Field

Johna needs a home ...
T
his is Johna, who is currently living at Evesham Cats Protection but he would like to relocate! Sadly Johna's age and colour are against him and many other cats have found a home before him, while he has been waiting a number of months. Although he is a mature cat he has a spritley disposition, especially when he hears the biscuit tin being opened. He is completely black, which is why he has been overlooked, as sadly we find it hard to home black cats. Johna came to us after being picked up as a stray, although we feel that there is a possibility that his owner may have passed away as he has obviously been cared for. As Johna is a long-term resident waiting to be adopted, he is allowed to wander freely around the adoption centre, which he enjoys very much. Unfortunately he forgets his manners sometimes, especially at mealtimes and fights with the other resident cats. This means he has to spend some time confined, and that makes him grumpy. For this reason, Johna needs a home where there are no other cats. However he loves human company and can usually be found in the kitchen, although this may be because he is hoping for the food to come out again.
95 Pitchers Hill Wickhamford, WR11 7RT
Monty is still looking for a rural home with lots of outdoor space - can you help?
Being a mature cat Johna has a cool confidence about him and would settle quickly in to a home, although we think he would prefer a quiet home where he can feel safe and relaxed. Despite his age Johna has a lot of life to live and really would like a retirement home, where he can enjoy lots of attention and not worry about sharing food. Johna and the volunteers would like to meet you, any day between 10am and 3.30pm, at Evesham Cats Protection, 95 Pitchers Hill, Wickhamford, Evesham, WR11 7RT. There are many other cats, also waiting for new homes, so for more details please phone the adoption centre on 01386 833343.

Local MP opens £10k Lottery Funded Eco House at Fladbury
N
igel Huddleston, MP, and District Councillor, Mrs Michelle English, were guests of honour on Friday for the official opening of the lottery funded Eco House recently installed at Fladbury CE First School. They wielded impressive shears to declare the eco house open by cutting a ribbon of ivy and then went inside to find out more about it. Headteacher Julie Wilson said "The eco house will enable children to learn about sustainable energy as there is a solar panel and a wind turbine and children can accurately measure the output of the energy produced by both wind and sun. They have already found out that enough energy is quickly produced to light a lamp and also to recharge a laptop, which is encouraging them to think hard about ways they can save money and help the planet by using renewable energy in the future.” Eco Warrior, Toby Jennings, aged 9, said “The sun’s rays and the wind are free so it makes sense to use them!”
Josh Bird, aged 8, was equally enthusiastic “The eco house is brilliant and we can even put up a ‘hide' around some of the panels to do some secret bird watching.” Local ‘green' ambassador, Peter Bugg, also came along to the opening and is keen to encourage children to think carefully about how they look after wildlife. He is very enthusiastic about the new project. “We recently took part in the RSPB Big Bird Watch and this will be fantastic for a wide range of projects. I’m very impressed.” The eco house, funded by the National Lottery, is part of the school’s strategy for the future. Fladbury First School already has a thriving Forest School and children regularly compost waste, grow (and eat!) their own strawberries, monitor birds in the nest boxes and visit local orchards to find out about fruit growing and bee keeping. Children have also created a wormery and a tower for Fladbury mini-beasts to call home!

Hawes Wensleydale Cheese
by Andrew Brooks
T
rue Wensleydale cheese, with its roots set firmly in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, is made by the Hawes creamery in Wensleydale itself, and has a heritage spanning centuries. First crafted in the 12th Century, the art of Wensleydale cheese-making was perfected over time, until 1897 when the first creamery was built in Hawes when Wensleydale cheese-making began on a large scale. Handcrafted and wrapped in muslin cheese cloth, Wensleydale cheese has a mild, fresh clean flavour with a honeyed aftertaste and a crumbly, flaky texture. Always featured in the famous Wallace & Gromit films, this cheese is great for all occasions. Lightly crumbled into salads gives them a bit of lift, or just on your favourite cheese biscuit. Such a versatile cheese.

Tiny Tusks Reaches The Terrible Two's … of elephant feed, bread and fruit), was complete and ready to be devoured by Sutton and mum Five.

utton, the gorgeous baby African elephant at West Midland Safari Park has turned two years old and has celebrated his birthday with some help from a local Beaver Scout Group. Elephant keepers at the Park decided that there was only one birthday present Sutton would really appreciate this year: a birthday cake made up of mounds of his favourite food. Making a cake fit for a growing elephant calf is no easy feat, so keepers called upon some local Beaver Scouts for help. Within half an hour the cake, (made up

Head Keeper of Elephants, Andy Plumb said, “It’s been a real pleasure watching Sutton grow and progress over the last two years. He now weighs a whopping 790kg and is almost four feet tall to the shoulder. His tusks have started to grow and last week he lost his first ever tooth! “Our elephants’ favourite thing is food, so there is no better birthday present than a cake made up of some of their most loved treats. It also contained some specially formulated elephant feed, which includes vital vitamins and minerals, so not only is it extremely tasty and fun to dismantle, it’s nutritional too. Let’s hope that the ‘terrible twos’ stage doesn’t exist with cheeky elephant calves!”
Melanie Williams, Beaver Scout Leader added, “KD9 Beaver Scouts were delighted to celebrate baby Sutton's second birthday with him and present him with the enormous cake that they had decorated. The beavers were tempted to have a piece, until they were told of its special ingredients, so settled for a grape instead. “We all felt very privileged to have had this unique opportunity to get up close to the famous Sutton and his mum in their safe habitat. The Beavers spoke about how very important it is that these animals are protected at the Safari Park in order for future generations to see and appreciate them when they visit.” Once the cake had been presented to the elephants, it didn’t last long. Both Sutton and Five used their powerful trunks to pick it apart and toss

Sutton was born on 5th May 2014 and was the first baby elephant to be born at the Park, following artificial insemination, using semen from a wild bull in South Africa. He lives with mum, 24-year-old Five and ‘aunt’ Latabe, 23. The elephants can be seen in the four-mile selfdrive safari, included in the standard admission charge of £22.00 for adults, £17.00 for children aged 3-15 years and £20.00 for concessions. Admission includes a free-return ticket and children under the age of 3 years are admitted free of charge. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. P
lants should always be checked once a year.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
When to Re-Pot CONTAINERS Knowing when to re-pot is a reasonably easy thing to determine. The look of the plant and the lightness of the pot is the first thing to check, then if there are roots coming through the weep holes underneath that is a clear indication that the plant might be needing a re-pot.
42
A plant with special needs for compost, i.e. ericaceous, will need checking on a much more regular basis. I would suggest this is done a minimum of once a year, maybe more depending on what the plant is, because the acid in the ericaceous soil leeches out when it rains and the plant uses some of it, so topping up is always important. Feeding Feeding pot plants is always hugely important as they can dry out very quickly, and they can use up their goodness. Choosing a Pot When choosing a pot remember that you might be re-potting it in a few years’ time . Bell shaped pots are very good, but anything with a lip means it is difficult to get the plant out, which is something to look out for. Moisture Water crystals when put in at planting will help to hold moisture in; even a bit of lining in the bottom will help if

the plant is moisture loving. Obviously you don’t want to line the whole pot so that it fills up like a pond when it rains. If the roots prefer to be on the dry side, then crocks (broken bits of pot in the bottom) to help drainage is important, so knowing your plant, what to add and how to treat it is a good start. If a plant needs re-potting, your best bet is to gently tease the plant out; you could run a spade around the outside to very gently encourage it out. It is much easier to do this when the plant is dry than when wet, so by putting it in a sheltered area for a few days and not watering it before you
re-pot it is good idea. Pot bound If a plant is pot bound then gently teasing some of the roots out is very good. This is a golden opportunity to check the roots to ensure they are not too rotten and there are no bugs like vine weevil - a beetle that has a larva that pupates without a chrysalis. If there are any of these present they will eat the roots. It is best to hand pick them out, and there is a nematode, which is a natural biological control pesticide, that you can use - you water it into the pots and that is likely to get them out. If you find one there is likely to be a cluster of around 20 – they lay eggs in slightly
raised containers because it is warmer for incubating. Try and get as much of the old soil out as possible without disturbing the roots too much and then re-pot. If it is very root bound, you will need a clear inch around the existing root ball diameter to re-pot on into a new pot, the next size up. Maintenance Once you have re-potted you must keep the plant wellwatered and fed. I recommend a liquid fertilizer once every 6 weeks to help improve its health. Next month I will look at training and supporting plants.

Helping Your Business Source
THE FUNDS TO GROW
H
ere at Haines Watts we pride ourselves on offering much more to our valued clients than annual tax returns and details of how much VAT they have to pay every three months. We have helped a number of businesses apply for grants to help them develop and grow and have an excellent scheme right on our doorstep – the Worcestershire Growth Fund. Supported by the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the fund is a capital grant scheme designed to enable businesses to achieve their potential to expand through increased employment and productivity. If you are already based in the county or are thinking of relocating, you may be eligible to apply. The LEP is particularly keen to support growth within the key areas of advanced manufacturing, agri-tech and cyber security and defence but will also consider applications from other sectors which can produce evidence of increased productivity and employment growth.
Grants of up to £100,000 are available although higher levels of support may be considered. Successful applications will generate new, sustainable jobs based in Worcestershire, result in increased productivity, provide match funding of at least 50 per cent and comply with State Aid regulations. Subject to availability, the programme is expected to run until March 2018 so it’s well worth getting hold of the necessary information now if you feel your business meets the criteria. Same applies to all funding schemes - don’t wait until it is too late! I am happy to discuss potential eligibility for the Worcestershire Growth Fund – or any other scheme you think may be appropriate for your business. To arrange an informal discussion please contact me on 01386 579999. Tim Pearce is managing partner of Haines Watts in Evesham and Worcester and specialises in helping owner-managed businesses, in particular those looking for a more hands-on approach.
