Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Canal Boats
article by Brian Joyce
C
anal boats, or narrowboats as they are more commonly known, have moved from their origins as a source of industrial transport in the 18th and early 19th centuries to become a source of pleasure, vacation transport and occasionally even homes on the water. Narrow in nature to enable their passage through the 2000 miles of inter connected canals and waterways which grew up across the country and especially throughout the water systems of the Trent, Mersey, Thames and Severn rivers. These vehicles are generally less than 7ft wide which is the narrowest of locks in use and are usually no more than 72ft in length, again a limitation based upon the smaller sized locks which could accommodate these inland waterway beasts.
sadly, their utility began to wane as the mighty railways grew in breadth, stature and importance. This network of interconnecting waterways was eventually nationalised in 1947 along with the rail network. Many of canals had fallen into disrepair, requiring dredging and considerable investment and effort to restore them to general usage. A prime example of these waterways can be found in Scotland, namely the famous Caledonian Canal. The canal runs some 60 miles (97 km) from northeast to southwest, however only one third of the entire length is man-made with 29 locks, the rest of its length being formed by Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy.
Narrowboats were effectively launched by the Third Duke of Bridgewater, Francis Edgerton, in 1759 to supply to and distribute from, his coal mines in Worsley, Lancashire. Astutely bypassing the River Irwell, Francis took his canals instead through to Manchester and to Liverpool and in doing so became a very wealthy man, as the furnaces of the industrial revolution consumed vast quantities of his goods, and his boats plied their trade.
Canal towpaths and surrounding areas have become a rare ecosystem, being relatively untarnished by the pollution and waste that their ocean bound brethren are inflicted with as they do not carry the outflows or industrial drainage which find their way into our rivers. They support a large variety of wildlife, some easier to see than others. Summer days will bring butterflies and dragonflies, evenings you may hear frogs and toads croaking in the rushes, foxes barking or badgers howling in the woods.
Many more canals followed suit including those across the Potteries and the Black Country and most of this network was completed by around 1815. After this period,
And so it is that their role and function has evolved from industrial communications and transportation channels, to leisure and preservation.

Jacqui Turvey Holistic therapist
H
olistic therapist Jacqui Turvey has lived in the Pershore area for the last nine years. Her interest in this form of therapy began some years ago when she became drawn to Angelic Reiki. Wanting to know more about this profound system of healing she enrolled in a training course and became a Reiki Master. This in turn led to an interest in Tarot readings and she then attended the Anglican School of Psychic Development in Norfolk, where she learned to become a professional Tarot reader. In 2010 Jacqui was faced with her own personal crisis when she developed ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis), which she suffered from for the next 3 years. Despite struggling with the effects of her debilitating condition, in 2013 Jacqui decided to continue her education in holistic therapy. She trained in EFT with Karl Dawson, and it was this that started her on the road to recovery from ME. Following her EFT training, three months later, she trained in Matrix Reimprinting, which continued her recovery process. Jacqui’s recovery from ME using holistic therapies inspired her to share her knowledge and experiences, and put these use helping other people, particularly those suffering from ME, anxiety, panic attacks and any form of trauma. She is now writing a book on ME, the emphasis of which is that this condition does not have to be a life sentence.
14
Jacqui is extremely flexible about how she works with her clients, and although she has a customised therapy room at her home, she is happy to meet clients at their homes if required. She offers: • 1-to-1 sessions for EFT and Matrix Reimprinting • Group sessions for EFT and Angelic Reiki • Card readings either in person, or on Skype, which enables her to work world-wide. • Free 20 minute consultation for new clients. Jacqui is also fully insured and certified, and by the end of this year will become a Master Trainer. So if you, or anyone you know, is suffering from any of the conditions mentioned in this article, or you would like to know more about the various holistic treatments Jacqui offers, call her now to arrange your introductory consultation.

Jasmine Cottage's 'Coming Out' Party
I
have to say, hand on heart, that opening up our garden to the public for the first time last year was a rather daunting experience. Some people in our village I’m sure thought quietly that we were quite mad – we only have a modest garden sizewise after all – but we were rewarded in spades (forgive the pun) in more ways than one. The year before, we had spent a year of hard work and investment transforming our plot from an uninspiring lawn and small pond to what will potentially become a traditional cottage garden to complement the 17th century black and white house we had always wanted. Needless to say, we are both avid gardeners and have spent many hours visiting and taking pleasure and ideas from other people’s gardens in the National Garden Scheme. So after some hesitation, we bit the bullet, contacted the NGS, and following an inspection from one of the friendly Worcestershire County team, we were signed up. Most people we told we were doing it were quite taken aback, thinking that you have to have palatial grounds to be included but the NGS scheme features a wide variety of gardens, from small terraced back gardens to those covering several acres. (Some villages and towns get
16
together to do group openings which are always a good attraction). As garden owners we decided we would open on two Sundays in July, to provide refreshments, and have a plant sale stall. We organised parking at the nearby Village Hall, just a few hundred yards away. And this is where the whole experience started to grow. Once people started to find out what we were doing, we had donations of plants – both for the garden and for the stall from friends; offers of help from neighbours and friends to set up and put up the signage; volunteers to make and serve cakes and refreshments and sell the plants; and to help with the all important clearing up afterwards. After our frantic rushing around tidying borders, weeding and putting everything in place, would anyone come? Yes they did. We had so many people wanting tea and cakes that we had to find more tables and chairs! We were blessed with exceptionally good weather on both days and over 130 visitors came, raising over £600. We thoroughly enjoyed it and it was great to have our friends to
help and meet so many likeminded people, and also to know that the money we raised goes to such worthwhile causes. Before we got involved, I hadn’t realised that the National Garden Scheme has been going since 1927 and has raised more than £45 million for nursing and caring charities. Currently the NGS gives away around £2.5 million every year to Macmillan, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Carers Trust, The Queens Nursing Institute, Perennial and this year its Guest Charity, is Parkinsons UK. Madness has prevailed. We decided to give it another go this year on two Sundays in May (10 and 24, 11am-3pm). Friends have turned up trumps again with offers of help, so we’re crossing fingers and toes for good weather and a lot of colour in the garden. We hope to see you there! t Take Grave Care, we know how important it is to you that your loved one’s final resting place is cared for in a dignified and respectful manner.
need of more than routine maintenance, we will let you know, and carry out any additional work on your instructions.
We also know that it is not always possible for you to visit as often as you would like, which means that graves become untidy and neglected. For reasons of age, distance or lack of tools, time or transport, we find we are unable to do all that is necessary to keep family graves and their memorials looking as well cared for as we would like. As a result, the final resting places of those we loved often become unkempt, headstones and memorials get dirty and the inscriptions unclear.
Flowers and Plants We will provide fresh flowers or carry out planting according to your wishes at any of our visits. Special Occasions If you would like to mark a special occasion, we will provide fresh flowers on the dates of your choice, such as birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, etc.

5 Moves for Toned Thighs
W
ish your legs were more toned and looked better in shorts and swimsuits? I’ve got 5 moves that specifically target your thighs in the most fat blasting way. To get the thighs you want, you’re going to have to get moving. With these five exercises, your thighs will be on the way to toned in no time. Toned Thigh Move No 1: Squat It’s basic, you know how to do it, and it will give you incredible results. Whether you choose to go with or without weights, squatting is the fundamental move you should cling to if shapely thighs are your goal.
them right, start by standing as you would normally, feet placed approximately hipwidth from one another. Take a lunging step with your right foot, bend you left knee so that it almost touches the ground and your right knee is at a 90-degree angle, and return to the starting position. Repeat with the other foot stepping forward in a lunging motion. Still need more burn? Grab a couple dumbbells and go at it again!
Of course, if this is too easy, you can add more weight or turn your regular squat into a jump-squat for extra thigh-trimming power. When you reach the bottom of your squat position, jump as high as you can, land in the starting position and repeat.
Toned Thigh Move No 3: Leg Circles Sure, it looks ridiculously easy, but if you think leg circles are a cinch you’ve not given them a try lately. Starting out, you’ll need to lie on your back on top of a soft surface, such as carpet or a yoga mat. Bending your left leg and keeping your left foot flat on the ground, lift your right leg into the air with your toes pointed and no bend in the knee. Then draw large circles in the air with your leg. Make the circles in a clockwise motion five times and then do five more in a counter-clockwise motion. Swap legs and repeat.
Toned Thigh Move No 2: Lunges Another classic move, lunges will get your thighs tight and toned to perfection. To do
When you feel particularly powerful, try spelling out the entire alphabet with each leg and see how far you get.
To perform a squat, have your feet shoulderwidth apart. Bend at the knee until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Return to the starting position and repeat.

Toned Thigh Move No 4: Stiff Leg Deadlift This move is not reserved for body builders. In fact, performing stiff leg deadlifts a couple of times a week is an effective way to increase the thigh toning power of your routine. Here’s how it’s done: Stand with your feet shoulder width apart with a slight bend in your knees. Hold a dumbbell in each hand, hanging down at your sides. Bend at the hips, keeping your chest out and back flat, and lower down until the dumbbells reach the tops of your shoes. Exhale and straighten back up to a standing position. Toned Thigh Move No 5: Scissor Jacks With your feet shoulder-width apart, stand with your hands facing the ground and arms extending out to either side. Jump into the air. While in the air, cross your right arm over your left arm and right leg over your left leg. Jump again, this time returning to the starting position, and then repeat with your left arm and leg going in front of your right arm and leg. Dedicated to Horses
article & photographs by Pamela Green
Could you dedicate twenty years of your life, taking care, and returning to full health, sick and ill treated horses and ponies?
Monty and Jessica are Welsh ponies and are what Sue calls starvation cases. They are now back to full health.
Well, Sue Penny has. She runs a horse and pony sanctuary, caring for over 122 horses and ponies every day. Her work is funded solely by donations, which helps to give these animals the best possible care, so they can enjoy the remainder of their years. Helping a horse that has suffered at the hands of humans and seeing them recover is one of the most rewarding aspects of Sue’s life. Sadly, not every story has a happy ending, and a small number of the rescued don’t make it.
One of her horses was unable to stand, and had to be lifted from the muddy field. He was taken to nearby vets who confirmed he was suffering from starvation but after Sue’s dedicated care he now gallops around the field full of life. Another horse, Whisper, was seen on TV in a terrible state. A lady rang the sanctuary and now sponsors her. This kindness doesn’t come often and with so many horses and ponies at the sanctuary, it is needed.
All the horses have been re-named by Sue, and as soon as she calls them, they gallop across the fields to her. Bailey is an absolutely stunning horse, with a white blaze. He’s a retired racehorse, and was becoming very stressed when stabled. Now he is a healthy and happy horse, loving his life at the sanctuary.
Some horses arrive at the sanctuary because the owners can no longer care for them or the owners have passed away. One Spanish grey Lipizzaner named Tilley, came to the sanctuary when her owner sadly died. She had been schooled in dressage for many years, and should go to a good home where she can continue her training.
She is a beautiful horse and she still does some dressage steps as she trots around the field. Another grey has made friends with a small pony and they are inseparable. No matter what the circumstances, Sue takes them in. Many haven’t been ridden for a while and subsequently have returned to their wild state. She urges potential owners to understand the personal and financial commitment of owning a horse. It’s worthwhile, but very hard work, so “if in doubt, don’t”. If you would like to make a donation or are interested in sponsoring a horse at the sancturary, or can offer a horse a new home, please contact Sue Penny on:

ershore High School’s team attended the Big Bang - UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair to present their project to a series of judges. Members of the team Katie Biddle, Georgia Hook, Isabella Taylor and Zoë Wood were invited to the finals of the National Science and Engineering Competition, after they were chosen from the County Finals in 2014. This time they competed along with 200 other teams and as well as judging, the team got to see shows, exhibitions and experiments that had been set up at the fair. Mrs Carol Ridings, Design and Technology Department, said: “I am extremely proud of the team. The girls represented Pershore High School at this very prestigious event and delivered a fantastic project which they had been developing since their success at the Regional Finals in March 2014. Well done and congratulations to the team for competing in the National Science and Engineering Finals. The first team of Years 9 and 10 from Pershore High School to achieve this.” “The experience has given us an insight into the engineering and design industries, which has inspired us to think about jobs we could get in the future.” Zoe Wood 30

Top tips for Tulips N
o spring flower display would be complete without tulips, and they can be used in many situations including beds, borders, containers and grassy areas. From vibrant red cups to dazzling yellow and pretty pink petals, the tulip is an integral part of any spring garden. To get the best possible results follow these tips from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and you will enjoy a spring show to be proud of. Whether used in formal or informal beds and borders, tulips make ideal bedding plants combined with annual or biennial planting. Tulips can also be useful for containers and some varieties can be naturalized in grass. Read on to discover all you need to know about these beautiful flowers. Top tips to care for your tulips Soil must be well-drained Tulips grow best in fertile, well足drained soil in full sun, sheltered from strong winds and all varieties actively dislike excessively wet conditions. If your soil is more clay-based or too sandy try incorporating some organic matter into the soil to make it more suitable for tulips. Plant from mid-to late autumn This is later than most bulbs but a late planting can help reduce problems with the disease tulip fire (a fungal disease of tulips which produces brown spots and twisted, distorted leaves). Use only healthy bulbs, discarding any that show signs of damage or mould. Plant at least twice the bulb's width apart and at a depth of two or three times the bulbs height. Replace or dry Most bedding-type tulips are best replaced each year. If left in the ground they are unlikely to
re-flower after their first year. The alternative to discarding old bulbs and replacing with new is to lift and dry the tulip bulbs after flowering. How to dry out your bulbs Deadhead the tulip to prevent seed production and wait until foliage turns yellow before lifting the bulbs. Clean the soil off the bulbs and discard any that may be diseased or damaged. Allow the bulbs to dry thoroughly before storing. Store the bulbs in trays or net bags in a warm, dark well-ventilated place 18-200C (65-680F) before replanting in the autumn. Varieties that re-flower If you prefer not to lift and dry your tulips you could invest in some dwarf species tulips such as Tulipa Kaufmanniana, T.fosteriana, T.greigii and their hybrids often re-flower without lifting. Only lift and divide when clumps get overcrowded. Although not usual, some cultivars growing in warm soils, where they can be baked in summer, may re足flower from year to year and possibly multiply. Tulip types If you thought one tulip was much like another, think again. Tulips are divided into 15 divisions, chiefly defined by their flower characteristics and sometimes referred to in bulb catalogues. Broadly speaking, their flowers can be described as single or double; cup足shaped, bowl-shaped or goblet-shaped; fringed, parrot or lily-flowered; long, slenderpetalled or star-shaped. Choosing your tulips When choosing tulips, consider their flowering times, suitability for borders, containers or a rock garden where the smaller species such as Tulipa tarda AGM or T. kaufmanniana can be best utilised. Some are ideal for naturalising in fine grass, in particular the low-growing tulip T. sprengeri AGM.

The Severn Valley Railway proudly
A
very special guest took to the footplate of one of the Severn Valley Railway’s famous steam locomotives on Monday, April 13th, as HRH The Princess Royal paid her first visit to the much-loved heritage attraction. The Locomotive was polished to perfection and sat in the station, gleaming as volunteer staff and children from Bewdley Primary School gathered in anticipation in the Spring sunshine at Bewdley Station to welcome The Princess, who was greeted by Mayor of Bewdley, Cllr Derek Killingworth. Following a welcome and summary of the groundbreaking flood damage repair programme, which was the focus of the last Royal Visit by the Duchess of Cornwall in 2008, The Princess Royal was introduced to an enthusiastic group of SVR pioneers and the station staff including younger volunteers. Herself a big fan of steam locomotives, The Princess Royal then took up the invitation to board the footplate of one of the Railway’s most popular heritage steam engines - Erlestoke Manor, without hesitation, to travel the 15-minute journey to Kidderminster through the picturesque Severn Valley countryside. In fact, The Princess appeared to enjoy her footplate experience so much that she stayed on board after the locomotive had pulled into the station, chatting to driver Paul Fathers and fireman Ryan Green about the ins and outs of driving and firing a steam engine.

The SVR is currently celebrating 50 years since a group of young railway enthusiasts gathered in their local pub and decided to re-open the line, which was closed in 1963, and waiting on the platform to greet The Princess were four of those founding members; Keith Beddoes, Christopher George, Columb Howell and Roger Hobson, who revealed the key landmarks in the Railway’s half-century heritage. Also among the welcome party were an enthusiastic, flag-waving group of children and teachers from Comberton Primary School. The Princess Royal was then asked to unveil a plaque celebrating 50 years of the SVR, and though the sun shone on the visit, the great British weather did intervene, blowing the curtain apart before the official unveiling, much to the amusement of The Princess and the gathered on-lookers. The Princess made a short speech congratulating the SVR on its Golden Jubilee and thanking all those involved in the visit for enabling her to travel on the footplate, which she described as ‘a real treat’ before signing the visitors book and being presented with a billy can and whistle as a reminder of her footplate experience. Finally, she was given a behind the scenes tour of the Carriage Works at Kidderminster, to meet volunteers and some of the young apprentices on the Heritage Skills Training Academy (HSTA), one of a range of key projects financed by the fundraising efforts of the SVR Charitable Trust (SVRCT) and the SVR’s 2012 Share Offer scheme.

welcomes Royal Visitor A real insight into the inner workings of the Railway, the Princess was shown demonstrations of the apprentices in action in the Upholstery Shop, Paintshop and mechanical floor - the heart of the SVR’s continuous carriage restoration and maintenance programme.
HRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent were its first Royal visitors in 1993 aboard the Orient Express, Princess Alexandra has visited in a personal capacity and HRH The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall came to celebrate the re-opening of the line in 2008, after extensive works to repair damage caused by the infamous 2007 floods.
Nick Ralls, the SVR’s General Manager, said: “It was a true delight to welcome HRH The Princess Royal to The SVR – she is very engaging, enthusiastic and friendly and is extremely knowledgeable about steam railways and engineering.
Her visit is part of the SVR’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, which have included the launch of a brand new exhibition, taking visitors on a journey through the first 50 years of the Railway, at The Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley.
“She was extremely complementary about our buildings, personnel and achievements and was more than happy to chat to volunteers about steam locomotives and ‘train-spotting’. She seemed to enjoy her footplate experience so much that it looked like she could have stayed up there chatting to our volunteers for much longer if she didn’t have a tight schedule to keep to!”
New events like Sounds of the 60s in August, and a special Golden Ticket visitor competition are also among the Railway’s packed 2015 visitor schedule. For more information on up-coming events, activities and bookings, visit www.svr.co.uk, call 01562 757900 or visit the Severn Valley Railway Families Facebook page.
Though this is the first time that The Princess Royal has visited the Railway, the SVR is no stranger to Royal guests. Its patron since 1998, HRH the Duke of Gloucester, has visited several times, including to officially open The Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley in 2009.

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, then Open 4 Business is the essential business workshop for you. The workshop is run in small groups (maximum 10 people) from 10am to 6pm
