Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy

of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham

& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

I hope you are enjoying the warm summer weather we've been having - make the most of it because it won't be long before the trees start to turn, and we are into autumn. Personally I love the colder months, especially the winter, and can't wait to get out my winter woolies! Maybe it's because Christmas is my favourite time of the year. As always, there's lots happeningin this part of Worcestershire - music events in Inkberrow and Evesham, Pershore Rugby Club have a fun day coming up and the Ashmolean Museum in Broadway have a fascinating display of unusual Japanese artwork. And for those of you with pets, Ledbury Park Vets some advice for keeping your four-legged companions fit and healthy.

But the main event this month is the 40th Anniversary Celebrations of the Pershore Retail Market. On behalf of all at Grapevine Publications, I'd like to extend my congratulations to the management and staff of the market for a wonderful achievement ... here's to the next forty years!

Vaccination

N

ewborns are protected for the first few weeks by antibodies received in the first maternal milk (colostrum). To continue this, most vaccination courses begin with two injections a few weeks apart, with maximum protection achieved around a week later. This immunity does wear off in time and must be topped up, usually annually. Occasionally an individual may not achieve the full immunity expected, usually because their own immune system was low due to unseen conditions when vaccinated. Your veterinary surgeon will advise delaying vaccination if concerned that your pet is unwell. Sometimes a pet may be a little off colour after vaccination or the injection site may be tender and swollen. Usually these symptoms wear off without treatment, but always let your vet know if you notice anything unusual. What do we vaccinate our pets against? Rabbits Myxomatosis is transmitted by biting insects such as fleas or mosquitoes, so can even affect rabbits which are housed on their own. It causes swelling of mucous membranes, discharge from the eyes and is usually fatal. Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) is rapidly fatal and spreads through contaminated objects such as bedding, cages and food bowls. There is a new strain of RHD for which there is no specific vaccine, although current vaccines may give some protection. Cats Feline Infections Enteritis causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea.

Feline Leukaemia Virus destroys the immune system, is present in body fluids and can be spread by direct (e.g. fighting) or indirect contact (e.g. bowls, bedding). Dogs Canine Distemper causes coughing, a runny nose, vomiting, diarrhoea and convulsions. It is frequently fatal but dogs that recover may have ongoing illnesses for the rest of their lives. Canine Infectious Hepatitis can lead to liver failure and death. Less severely affected dogs have a cough and high temperature and may develop a white colouration on the front of the eye. Canine Parvovirus causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea, usually in young puppies. Many puppies affected with the disease will die, and infected pregnant bitches often produce deformed puppies. Leptospirosis is caused by a bacterium excreted in rats’ urine, and results in jaundice and liver failure. Importantly it can be spread to people as well as other dogs. Kennel cough is highly infectious and spreads rapidly, causing coughing which can last for several weeks. Protection is provided by an intra-nasal vaccination. All licensed boarding kennels and catteries require evidence of vaccination administered by a veterinary surgeon.

W

hat do Nabokov, Kandinsky, Beethoven, Billy Joel and Joanne Harris have in common? The answer is they all experience some form of synaesthesia – a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of music produces the visualisation of colour. For instance, Nabokov who wrote the novel ‘Lolita’ saw Wednesday as indigo blue. One in two thousand people are said to experience some form of synaesthesia. The UK Synaesthesia Association claims there are up to seventy different types of the condition with the most common varieties involving colour. One person describes her back pain as lavender squiggles, another person thinks chicken tastes spherical. The sensations are automatic and cannot be turned off. They do not change as time passes and each person’s response will be different. It is thought that we are all born with our senses fused but that they separate by the time we are four or five. The artist Kandinsky claimed to hear a strange hissing sound when mixing colours in his paint-box as a child. Beethoven referred to B minor as ‘the black key’ and D major as ‘the orange key.’ Schubert

described E minor as ‘a maiden robed in white with a rose red bow on her chest.’ David Hockney once said: “When I listened to the music the tree painted itself. Singer-songwriter Billy Joel describes his rocky, upbeat numbers as being red, orange and yellow whereas his ballads are blue and green. Joanne Harris, the writer of ‘Chocolat’ and other novels experiences some colours as a particular smell. “There’s a bright red that smells of chocolate and a muddy yellow that reeks of rotten fish. I experience some words and names as a particular taste. Many tastes relate to food I haven’t eaten for forty years, but the taste has not changed. For instance, ‘punishment’ tastes of liquorice, ‘objection’ is apricot jam. The name ‘David’ tastes of oxtail soup whereas ‘Michael’ is evaporated milk. For further information check out the UK Synaesthesia Association website (www. uksynaesthesia.com) or read ‘Tasting the Universe’ by Maureen Seaberg (pub. New Page Books). n Saturday 17th September Inkberrow’s beautiful Norman church of St. Peter will once again be resounding to the uplifting sounds of a 40-piece symphony orchestra – The Inkberrow Sinfonia. This is the 14th annual concert by this carefully selected group of musicians, comprising both professional and semi-professional players, under the direction of Richard Laing, a nationally known conductor. Over the years these concerts have raised thousands of pounds for the Chernobyl Children’s Project UK and St. Peter’s Church Fabric Fund. This year’s concert opens with Mendelssohn’s lovely overture “The Fair Melusine, followed by a comparative rarity, Beethoven’s “Triple Concerto, with local violin soloist Shulah Oliver and her colleagues in the Estrilda Trio, Rebecca Rose (cello) and Tim Sidford (piano). Tim will be playing the church’s fine Broadwood grand piano, recently refurbished.

undreds of animal lovers converged on the Jinney Ring on Sunday 17th July, to help them and The Cinnamon Trust celebrate the 5th Anniversary of “Animals R Magic”. Over 50 organisations attended including Worcestershire Canicross Club, Severn Area Rescue Association and dozens of animal charities. One of the guests was “Significant Move” an ex racehorse who was on his best behaviour when meeting the event organiser, Janet Morgan and special guest, BBC Midlands Today Presenter Joanne Malin.

Brian Rowe rescued a male Tawny Owl from Liverpool 4 years ago and called him Elvis. The bird was in a sorry state when Brian picked him up, but with a lot of love and care his condition improved. In the spring of this year Brian was amazed to find out that Elvis is in fact a female after discovering she had laid 6 eggs! Elvis is now called Elvira. The alpacas had an interloper among them this year. `Kanzeon` the Llama didn`t want to be left at home so came along to join in the fun. “Simply Alpaca” have been to all five Animals R Magic Shows and the event wouldn`t have been the same without them or several other loyal supporters.

The Last Wish An elderly man went to the doctor for a check-up, and was told he didn’t have long to live. So he summoned the three most important people in his life to tell them of his fate his doctor, his priest and his lawyer. He said, “Well, today I found out that I don’t have long to live. So I have asked you three here because you are the most important people in my life and I need to ask you a favour. Today I am going to give each of you an envelope with £50,000 inside. When I die I would ask that all three of you throw the money into my grave”.

Pinvin, Pershore

After the man passed on, the doctor, the priest and the lawyer all went to his funeral.

Computer Problems?

At the wake afterwards, the three of them were discussing the strange request. The doctor said, “I have to admit I kept £10,000 of his money. He owed me for a lot of medical bills, but I threw the other £40,000 into the grave as he requested.” The priest said, “I had to admit that I also kept some money. I kept £25,000 for the church. It will go to a good cause, and I did throw the other £25,000 into the grave.” Well the lawyer just couldn’t believe what he was hearing! "I am surprised at both of you for taking advantage of him like that. I wrote a cheque for the full £50,000 and threw it all in!” 20

Club Attracts Young Rugby Players for Fun I

n September Pershore Rugby Club is once again, offering local children the chance to have a go at one of three types of rugby and to become part of a unique, expanding local club at the heart of the Pershore community. On Sunday 18th September it will be the club’s highly popular annual rugby fun day, where boys and girls of all ages can join in a wide range of events for free. Anyone can simply drop in to the club and meet players, coaches, and generally have a look around at any time from 11am until 1pm. There will be a bouncy castle and slide, taster sessions, BBQ and refreshments and free on-site parking for the event at the club’s riverside grounds in Mill Lane, Wyre Piddle. And, for any children who decide they would like to carry on playing at Pershore after the fun day, the club are offering three free training sessions. Ben Andrews, chair of the Pershore Juniors section says that the juniors’ section has gone from strength to strength over the last two years and many youngsters have been attracted to the club because it is different from others in the area. Pershore RFC is a comparatively small rugby club surrounded by larger clubs and we believe that it is our smaller size that makes us attractive to many families. Being smaller allows us to offer a more personalised approach, which means better tuition for newcomers to the game and we pride ourselves on our welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.

At Pershore, children can have fun and get fit, playing rugby in a sociable, safe and friendly, family environment. Whilst children play with their peers in appropriate age groups, parents can help encourage and support, or can play themselves in the adult mixed touch rugby training, all on Sunday morning from 10am. As well as offering tag rugby for Under 7’s and 8’s, and contact rugby for older age groups, we have a junior touch rugby group for under 9’s to under 13’s. Older children are able to join mixed touch rugby sessions if contact rugby is not for them. We even have toddler rugby sessions for 4 or 5 year olds on Saturday mornings. We have a competitive senior squad playing on Saturday afternoon, and a ladies’ touch team who have been really successful. There really is some form of rugby available for allcomers. Anyone wanting further information should contact Ben Andrews on 07779 927 852 or email prfc. juniors@hotmail.co.uk .

eptember is the last real chance to prune your more tender plants, such as lavender and rosemary. This is because there is enough time for the cuts to seal before winter sets in. With the more tender plants cold wet conditions combined do the damage, as they can normally cope with one but both together, such as snow melting during the day and re-freezing at night, will kill off a lot more vulnerable plants. When pruning do not cut back into brown wood, as this is the older wood; follow the stem you are cutting and you’ll see where it changes from the 22

Hedge cutting time has now started for all you bird lovers. These need to be cut from now until November (depending on the weather) and from February to March. The hedges not to be cut are yew and box hedging as these should have been done by now and are best done in August. As a tip stand side on to the hedge and cut in a small curving motion from bottom to top, so that what you cut falls to the ground and not onto parts of the hedge you have yet to cut. This will make it much easier to see the straight line you are aiming for. Garden tasks for September Fork over your compost bin; ideally move the top layer further down, this will help it to decompose quicker as the middle is hotter and wetter. If you can, cover the top with a plastic sheet and weight it down with bricks. If it is very dry water it before doing this. The plastic keeps the wetness in and as it rots the weight squeezes out the air. Some of your herbaceous plants (ones that die back in winter) such as asters (Michaelmas daisies) will have finished flowering. Now is the time to cut them down. If you want to divide them next month then leave the tops showing so you know where they are. By doing this to other herbaceous plants such as Alchemilla mollis it will stop them seeding as their seed would not have set yet.

If you are thinking about putting up a bird box, now is the time to do this to give time for our human scent to wash off during the winter months. Where possible wearing your gardening gloves, as this will help; however there will be still scent left from people touching the box when it was in the shop. Next month I will be looking at covering plants that will need a little help getting through the winter ready for those early frosts.

Organic & Biodynamic

O

rganic and biodynamic wines are produced using no synthetic sprays or chemical fertilisers. There are many award-winning wines in this category. Organic and biodynamic producing methods can enable the finished wines to have a higher antioxidant content than that of wines produced with grapes which have been cultivated by other methods. The additions of minerals and plant extracts see calculated operations bringing forth impressive wine productions.

after-time and is a perfect pairing with many dishes, including fish, seafood and white meats.

I located Vintage Roots, an acclaimed supplier and producer of these splendid, specialist wines. Established during 1986, I found their catalogue extremely informative.

Merlot is great with food, as well as on its own. The Gemstone offering I found to have a very welcoming bouquet and to be smooth on the mouthfeel and palate sensation.

The hoopoe is an exotic-looking bird with black and white wings, a long bill and a crest, which is raised when the bird becomes excited. Unmistakable – evoking inspirational thoughts for a range of wines from Vintage Roots Ltd.

Rosso Dei Poderi (Barone Pizzini) is a further powerful red and has many admirers. A firm favourite, this wine pairs exceptionally well with numerous dishes, including red meats.

Hoopoe Nero d’Avola Terre Siciliane is a full-bodied, powerful red wine, with an excellent bouquet and long palate sensation. Very pleasing, indeed. Hoopoe Mountain Grillo Terre Siciliane is another very popular production. This white wine is produced utilising grapes grown on the mountains. A very pleasant nose leads enticingly to a superb mouthfeel. It makes for great food matching, with its splendid character. Hoopoe Pinot Grigio/Catarratto Terre Siciliane is a favourite with many. This white wine is chosen time-

Chardonnay is always popular and the Gemstone production, from South Australia, is fresh with very good citrus fruit flavours. Pievalta Verdicchio Superiore is another white wine, which appeals to me. This production has a good following of devotees, pairing very well with many dishes.

Award-winning specialist Vintage Roots also has beers, spirits and other beverages, all with low-charge delivering, which is even free for some orders and areas. Freephone 0800 980 4992 E: info@vintageroots.co.uk www.vintageroots.co.uk

Declare Rental Income Now and Sleep Easy! rom family or business concerns to the plight of our favourite sports team, there are many things that can keep us awake at night.

F

Notifying HMRC may well be the last item on your ‘to do’ list, which exposes you to the triple threat of back taxes, interest and penalties.

Rental income shouldn’t be one of them.

Fortunately, the tax authority has offered an easy way for landlords to notify them of any undeclared rental income through its much publicised let property campaign.

A considerable proportion of rental income in the UK comes from planned buy-to-let investments but it is possible to become a landlord if you inherit property or as a result of being unable to sell a previous home if domestic circumstances change. When you first let a property, it’s easy to get bogged down with more pressing issues such as finding a suitable agent and arranging appliance safety checks.

All you need to do is register online and make a declaration which includes the tax due for all earlier years, interest and a penalty. The good news is that as the taxpayer is seen to be cooperating, the penalty is reduced. The penalties go up if HMRC discover the omission themselves, the income has been deliberately concealed or they believe there is

Tim Pearce

a lack of cooperation. The maximum penalty that can be charged is 200 per cent of the tax, which is on top of the tax liability and interest. HMRC is now actively investigating undeclared rental income so time is running out to volunteer the declaration. Our advice is straightforward: don’t wait for HMRC to find you and run the risk of having to pay a heavy penalty. Here at Haines Watts we often find that our clients feel a great sense of relief after making the declaration. If you would like us to assist you in making a claim, please call 01905 612347 to arrange an appointment.

F

rom 14th September 2016, the Broadway Museum & Art Gallery’s special exhibition from the Ashmolean Museum, will be exploring the bizarre and beguiling world of the Japanese supernatural. Giant spiders, dancing skeletons, winged goblins and hordes of ghostly warriors are among the spooky subjects depicted in this display of striking nineteenthcentury woodblock prints, drawn from the Ashmolean Museum’s rich collection of Japanese art. The exhibition is timed to coincide with Halloween, although in Japan ghosts are associated with the hot and humid summer months, when scary stories send a welcome shiver down the spine! Belief in the supernatural is deep-rooted in the folklore of Japan. According to Japan’s native Shinto religion, spirits reside everywhere – in forests, fields, mountains, rivers and in the home. The arrival of Buddhism during the sixth century AD brought with it a host more supernatural beings, and many Chinese folk tales of spirits and monsters were also absorbed into Japanese tradition. This varied population of ghostly beings has long been represented in Japanese art and literature; depicted in paintings and prints and turned into hair-raising dramas for the kabuki theatre. The exhibition presents the Japanese supernatural as portrayed in ukiyo-e popular prints, mass-produced woodblock prints that were a product of the vibrant entertainment culture which thrived in Japan’s major cities during the Edo period (1600-1867). Characterised by vivid colours and bold designs that made them hugely influential on Western artists in the late 1800s, ukiyo-e most commonly depicted the

Woodblock prints from the Ashmolean Museum presents 16 colourful ukiyo-e prints, including a number of dramatic multiple sheet images that have rarely been on public display before. It focuses on works by the celebrated print designers Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), two of the most prolific and successful artists of their day. The subjects depicted range from household objects that come to life to animals with supernatural powers, mischievous demons and the vengeful spirits of cruelly-wronged women such as the tragic Oiwa, who suffered an agonizing death after being poisoned by her husband and whose restless spirit returned to torment her murderer. The exhibition will continue until 20th December 2016. Opening Hours Tues - Sun 10am - 5pm Open Bank Holiday Mondays

ell almost . . . David Reid and his work colleagues are doing the walking on behalf of Evesham Cats Protection and Evesham Dogs Trust. As a locally based charity, Evesham Cats Protection rely on the generous donations from supporters and fundraising events to keep the adoption centre operational. So we were all very pleased when David got in touch and said that he and four of his work colleagues wanted to help the charities and were going to complete the Ben Nevis 17km trek in September. The team are asking for sponsorship for completing the trek, with the donations going to his two preferred charities.

David is dedicated to supporting the cats and dogs charities and says "I wanted to do this for the Cats Protection and Dogs Trust as they are both close to my heart. I detest animal cruelty and irresponsible ownership. I am so glad charities like Cats Protection and Dogs Trust are there to help." David and the team came to meet the cats and dogs at the centres and were able to see what their efforts would be supporting. "It was an awesome afternoon meeting all the cats and dogs." said David, "The work and dedication from the volunteers is out of this world and you all deserve as much as help as

possible from the general public and I know the rescued animals are safe and well cared for with you." If you would like to support David and his colleagues with their fundraising trek, please use these links to show your support: https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/pawsontherun-cats https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/pawsontherun-dogs You can also follow their progress on Evesham Cats Protection facebook page. Please show your support where possible. Best of luck to David and team, and best foot forward.

Ready for a Change?

D

o you wish you could change something about your life right now?

I’m here to argue that change can happen in an instant. I know this goes against popular thought. Most people believe that change has to be worked at for months or even years. We expect to try and fail numerous times before we ultimately give up or succeed. How many people do you know who struggle with their weight? They want to make a healthy change by getting in shape, but the change never seems to take hold. Is there something in your life that you want to change? Do you have weight to lose? Do you have high blood pressure? Do you have a pair of trousers that you wish you could fit into? What is keeping you from making a positive change in your life? According to professional speaker and author, Tony Robbins, it’s the getting ready to change that takes time. In the end there’s a 42

single instant when the change occurs. Robbins goes on to outline three specific beliefs that you must have in order to instantly create a lasting change. Belief Number 1 - Something must change Do you sort of want to get into shape, or do you absolutely have to lose the weight? Does dropping a few pounds sound nice, or is living another day in your current body unbearable? In order to make a lasting change you must be convinced that the time has come. Belief Number 2 - I must change it. It is vital that you take full responsibility in making the change. Sure, others may assist you, but in the end you are the one who is going to make it happen. You have to need this change enough to make it your personal mission—no one else will do it for you. Belief Number 3 - I can change it Don’t let past failures get in your way. The truth is that you do amazing things when you put your mind to it. Believe that you

are capable of losing weight or making any other positive change in your life. Why do most people fail to make lasting change? They leave it up to willpower. This works for a while, but you’ll always revert back to what’s comfortable. The solution? Change what you’re comfortable with. You’ve probably heard that humans are motivated by two things: (1) to avoid pain and (2) to gain pleasure. When you want to change a behaviour pattern the key is to associate pain with the behaviour that you don’t want and pleasure with the behaviour that you do want. You know that you want to lose weight and that to do so you need to quit eating comfort food late at night. You also know that you need to start exercising on a regular basis. Up until this point your brain is trained to associate pleasure with eating comfort food late at night and to associate pain with exercise.

Magnificent

MILLAU article & photos by Pamela Green

I

know its quite a statement to make: I've been over the world's tallest bridge - but its true. I'm talking about the Millau Viaduct. It is a fantastic display of what man can achieve. I couldn't believe the size of it when my husband and I drove across it on our last holiday in France. Put simply it's the tallest cable stayed bridge in the world, and it spans the valley of the river Tarn and Millau, in Southern France. The eight masts reach a height of 343.0 metres, slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was opened to traffic on 16th December 2004, and has been ranked as one of the greatest engineering achievements of all time. It was designed by English architect Norman Foster, and French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux, and what an achievement! It was built because of the steep mountainous roads on the route from Paris to Spain, passing through the Tarn Valley, and through the town of Millau. The valley is very wide and deep, roadways down wind from above with sharp bends and steep declines, to cross the river and then ascend the other side ... what a journey it must have been. The best place to see this magnificent structure is the service area on the North side of the A75, where you will have quite a climb to the viewing point. Don't forget your camera as the scenery is fantastic and really worth the effort. In the car park there is an excellent visitors centre where you can watch a video of how the bridge was built, and there is also a cafe 46 and toilets, so a nice place to break your

journey and see some awe inspiring sights. The staff at the viewing point speak excellent English, and are very helpful about other attractions in the area. From the 11th century, Millau has been famous for making exquisite soft leather gloves, which have graced the hands of royalty, the rich, and film stars. They are the best and softest leather gloves ever, but they are also very expensive. To know more about the heritage there is a glove museum. Today tanners, glove makers, saddle makers, bag and the shoe making professionals have united in the Association Pole cuir Aveyron, which promote the local manufacturers to national level. If you like history, close by is the archaeological site of the Roman City of Candatomagus, which was a major ceramic centre in the Roman era. If you take the D110 road towards Montpellier there is a paragliding site; imagine the view as you sour over the viaduct. I thought driving over the viaduct was a tremendous experience, but every two years, the exceptional 24km race, Course Eiffage du Viaduct de Millau, takes place. This is listed as one of the top 10 races, and gives runners the chance to run on the highest viaduct in the world. In 2014, 15,000 runners from thirty countries were at the starting line. Many runners described the race as running between heaven and earth. What a tremendous experience!

Mamas are Smart! Mrs Papadimitropoulos comes to visit her son Niko for dinner. Niko lives with a female roommate, Maria. During the course of the evening, his mother couldn’t help but notice how pretty Niko’s roommate is, and whilst watching the two interact, she starts to wonder if there is more between Niko and his roommate than meets the eye. Reading his mama’s thoughts, Niko says, “I know what you are thinking Mama, but I assure you, Maria and I are just roommates.”

+RWHOV 3XEV FDWHUHG IRU

About a week later, Maria says to Niko, “Ever since your mother came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the silver sugar bowl. You don’t suppose she took, do you?” Niko replies, “Well I doubt it, but I’ll email her just to be sure.” So he sits down and emails his mother: Dear Mama I’m not saying that you ĚŝĚ take the sugar bowl from my house, and I’m not saying that you ĚŝĚŶ͛ƚ take it, but the fact remains that is has been missing ever since you came here for dinner. Your loving son Niko Several days later, Niko receives a response from his mother, which reads: Dear Son I’m not saying that you ĚŽ sleep with Maria, and I’m not saying that you ĚŽŶ͛ƚ sleep with her, but the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her OWN bed, she would have found the sugar bowl by now!
