3 Weight loss myths that can put your life in danger If you read health magazines regularly, you are sure to come across a lot of tips regarding weight loss. Some of these tips actually work, and others don't. The ones that generally don't work are those that suggest fad diets or rely solely on weight loss supplements and pills. The tips that actually work for everybody are always simple: that of diet and exercise. However, the weight loss industry is ridden with myths and misleading information, and people often tend to twist the truths, either because of their own advantage or out of plain ignorance. In this article I will discuss three such weight loss myths. 1. Myth#1: Spot reduction of fat is possible: Not at all true, and I am sure that any weight loss expert will unanimously agree to this. You cannot force your body to spot reduce your fat under any circumstances, no matter what type of workouts you do. If you do only crunches and leg lifts frequently in the hope of reducing belly fat, you will notice that instead of reducing your belly fat, you will reduce the muscle mass that resides beneath the abdomen. For this reason, your focus should not be on crunches and leg lifts alone; you should also follow a healthy diet that would speed up your metabolic rate and help you burn fat fast! 2. Myth#2: A drastic cut down on calorie intake reduces your body fat: This myth has pushed many a person on the brink of crash dieting. People take to crash dieting in the hope of shedding those extra pounds, least realizing that crash dieting harm their bodies instead of helping them. As a matter of fact, when you starve or fast, your body realizes that you are going to kill it and then it goes into the starvation mode. While in starvation mode, your body slows down your metabolic rate and burns your muscles (instead of fat, which is kept in reserve) for producing energy. This way, you don't lose much fat at all; if anything, you lose your valuable muscles. And once you return to your normal diet, you will gain extra weight! 3. Myth#3: Cardio exercises alone will help you lose weight: While it is true that cardio exercise can help you lose fat, it is not true that this is the only type of weight loss exercise available; don't forget the aerobics. As a matter of fact, the amount of fat you will lose doing either cardio or aerobics is almost the same. On the other hand, weight lifting is better than both cardio and aerobics, in that it not only helps you burn fat during the workout, but for hours after that! Why not come along to boot camp and discover exactly how to get the most from your workouts while having great fun in a group setting, you will also receive a diet plan and lifestyle tips so bring a friend and come along!! Financial Advice As the current recession continues, and we all look for ways of cutting back our expenses, it is important that you don’t succumb to temptation and cancel direct debits for insurance policies that have been put in place to protect your family should the worst happen. Life Assurance As a minimum you should have enough life cover to clear your outstanding debts. Think things over, discuss them with your partner: what do you want for your family if you and/or your partner died – not the happiest of conversations, but a very important and necessary one). Very often people think that if their debts were paid off, their family will be fine. They forget that the surviving partner may have to give up work, or reduce the hours they work in order to take care of the children. Life cover is still relatively cheap if you are in reasonable health. Check the cover you have with your broker, who is the best person to advise if you have the right amount of protection, and will also be able to give you quotations for any additional cover you may need to make up any shortfall. Critical Illness Cover This cover will pay out a lump sum on the diagnosis of a critical illness listed on your policy. For instance, if you suffered a heart attack or are diagnosed with cancer (which needn’t be terminal; just covered by your insurers) the policy would pay out, subject to its terms and conditions. Even a small amount of cover could make a considerable difference helping with your finances at a time when you are facing a frightening illness. At the very least it would 14

mean you could concentrate on getting better, instead of worrying about how you are going to manage financially. Permanent Health Insurance or Accident, Sickness & Unemployment Cover It is well worth considering having this type of protection at any time. The unemployment cover is of special relevance in times of recession. This can be arranged to pay out a monthly sum in the event that you are unable to work due to illness, or if you lost your job through no fault of your own. With any existing policies, get your broker to advise you if the policy would give you the protection you want should the worst happen. Put cover in place to meet any shortfalls if at all possible. Your broker will be able to advise you on the types and costs of cover available if you don’t currently have insurance of this kind, or if you do, whether or not it is suitable for your needs, and finally, whether or not there is alternative protection available which is better value. Don’t ever cancel any existing policy without advice, or until a new policy has been underwritten and cover is in place. These types of insurance should be considered necessities, not luxuries, and a regular review from time to time can be very worthwhile. Many families pay more money each month for satellite television than they do for their protection policies. In the current economic climate, many people need to reconsider their priorities. Unfortunately, it is very often not until a life changing event has occurred that they do this. Don’t let your family become a statistic.

Pershore Racecourse

O

nce again Pershore is in the process of arranging what is undoubtedly the most important event of its year - the Plum Festival, which takes place annually during the month of August culminating in a prestigious Plum Fair each August Bank Holiday

Monday.

As part of the celebrations last year an important horse-race event was re-enacted at Worcester Racecourse: "The Land O' Plums Chase", which will again take place this year on 5th August. This race was originally held on Pershore's own course. It's history goes back to Tuesday 26th October 1847, when the first recorded meeting on the flat was held in Pershore on land in Weir Meadow off the Defford Road alongside the River Avon. This course was said to be a very good and long one. The main event that day was the "Pershore Stakes" run in four heats, each a mileand-a half long when it appears Mr. Wood's bay mare Amazement beat Mr. Minor's Augustus and Mr. Kirby's Monsieur Perrot. There was then a 52-year gap before the next race meeting took place, this being a steeplechase held on 17th April 1899. Due to the proximity of the river, the site was often extremely wet, if not actually flooded. Two Hunt fixtures were held each year, in Spring and Autumn. During the "Hunter's Handicap Chase" of May 1910, the jockey Bob Wall was thrown from his horse Nunnery III. Although falling heavily, the mishap was missed by the officials, but a group of boy scouts came to his rescue, taking him to the Jockey's Room where he was transferred to Pershore Cottage Hospital and recovered following treatment. The course was also the scene of other exciting events. In July 1912 the town witnessed its first view of an aeroplane as it twice circled over. Then in October 1913 Gustav Hamel gave exhibitions of flying there, as the land had by then, been licensed by the Ministry of Air as an aerodrome. From here, CS Kent ran daily passenger flights with flying exhibitions on Sundays, which events were widely patronized by local residents. In the 1930's Sir Alan Cobham came to Pershore when he allegedly walked the wing of a Tiger Moth. Eventually it was decided the ground was too wet and muddy for its original purpose and a new location was sought for the racecourse. This was established at the Station Road site near the High School, on land owned by the Earl of Coventry, and opened on 11th October 1935. There was no flat racing here since it was a tight course, not good for galloping, so was only used for steeple-chasing. Being near the railway station, race-goers from such places as Birmingham and Gloucester as well as locals, had easy access and trains would bring horses from afar, attracting some top jockeys, including the famous Anthony brothers, Ivor and Jack, who frequently rode during the period 1912 to 1915. The Journal of 1935 reported that the course covered about 100 acres and comprised a track of just over a mile round, six jumps, two grandstands (Tattersall's and Club), lunch, weighing, hospitality and press rooms, two totaliser buildings, club lunch rooms, and a steward's room, among other buildings. It also reported that from the enclosures a clear view of the whole track could be seen. Racing continued there for some years, the Birmingham Post of 7th May 1928 telling us that this meeting took place on that day with the "Land O' Plums Steeplechase" being the chief item in the programme when Jargoon was the favourite. However, this was only one of six races, held 16

at half hourly intervals, the others being, at 2 o'clock, the "Birlingham Chase", followed by the "Evesham Hurdle", and the "'Land O' Plums" at 3 o'clock. Then came the "Elmley Hurdle", the "Hunter's Steeplechase" and the "Deerhurst Hurdle". All the races were of two-mile duration apart from the "Hunter's Steeplechase" at three miles. The "Land O' Plums" that day attracted nineteen riders with prize money of one hundred guineas whilst the "Elmley Novices Hurdle Race", attracted some forty horses, with prize money of seventy guineas (as was the prize for all the other races). Racing continued until on 1st May 1939 when what transpired to be the final meeting took place. Over a thousand paying customers attended, but with the outbreak of World War II on 3rd September, the scheduled Autumn meeting was cancelled. Throughout the war the whole area was commandeered as an RAF training school and although at the end of hostilities the managers of the course, Pratt & Co., intended to resume the event, this never happened and the land was sold, ultimately to become the trading estate. Reminders of its past can be seen in the name Racecourse Road' that stands at the entrance to the estate. Article written by Marion Freeman

The Spotted What!? When a conservation and wildlife adviser called John Clarke put a small and unobtrusive advertisement in a selection of parish magazines, the response was remarkable . . . For eight years, John had been working on the remote and windswept Scottish island of Colonsay. Having returned to rural Worcestershire, his imagination was seized by the gradual disappearance of a small migrant bird, the Spotted Flycatcher. Spurred by various sightings, John tramped the villages with his mirror-on-a-stick and documented his findings. This enchanting book, a blend of anecdote and actual scientific research, is the story of his quest for this endearing and elusive bird and of the characters who, fired by his enthusiasm, became so fervently involved in his project. John writes with knowledge, warmth and humour. Birdwatchers will love this book. But so too will many others, those with a passion for wildlife, for the countryside, for conservation and those with an interest in the interaction of man and nature. John's book is a tribute to the Spotted Flycatcher and may well help to halt its decline. He is The Flycatcher Man.

This charming little book has proved to be very popular and would make an ideal present for any bird-watching enthusiast. To order a copy now at the low price of just £3.99 plus £1.00 p&p, call: 01684 833715 26

August in the Garden August is usually the month when most people go on holiday. However, for those who are staying at home, this is a good time to do a bit of tidying up in the garden, and harvest your fruit and vegetables. Planting Now is the time to start planting bulbs for the winter and next spring. You can also sow late salad crops of spring onions, radishes, lettuce and wild rocket. Propagation Your early summer flowering plants will by now have some ripened seeds, so start collecting them. Clean off any extraneous plant material, then store them in a cool, dry place. This also a good time to layer shrubs such as magnolias, rhododendrons, clematis and pinks; take cutttings of alpines, perennials such as penstemons, and take semi ripe cuttings of shrubs and herbs. Pruning Remove old flowering shoots from your rambling roses after they have flowered; cut them close to the ground, then tie in any new branches to replace them. Artemesia, lavender and santolina will start looking untidy once their flowers begin to fade, so give them a thorough trim with a sharp pair of shears. Wisteria can still be given its summer prune; topiary and hedges should continue to be trimmed to keep their shape; and finally, don't forget to cut down spent raspberry canes. Lawns If you've had a lot of rain in your area, your lawn will probably need cutting, but don’t cut it too short, because doing so will encourage it to grow even faster. In hot dry weather, leave grass cuttings on the lawn as this will help retain moisture and prevent the grass from drying out too quickly. Use a high phosphate fertiliser 28

on your lawn to encourage root growth and strengthen the grass for the coming winter. Indoors Plants & Greenhouses If you plan to be away for any length of time this month, don't forget to prepare your indoor plants so they don't die in your absence. First water them thoroughly; then move them away from areas that get a lot of direct sun. Group your plants together on trays of wet gravel or capillary matting. Alternatively, put them in an empty bath which will keep them cool and help reduce moisture loss. Fruit & Vegetables Vegetables such as sweetcorn, marrows, pumpkins and squashes will now be ready for harvesting. Pinch out the tops of outdoor tomatoes when three trusses of fruit have developed and continue to remove side shoots, except on bush tomatoes. Make sure you support branches of plum trees, and any other heavily laden fruit trees, as the weight of the fruit may damage or even break brittle branches. Now is the time to start harvesting apples, pears and other similar types of fruit. Onions and garlic are now ready to be lifted and dried, and you should now harvest beans ready for freezing. Maintenance Container plants should be fed weekly with a weak solution of liquid fertiliser to keep them looking their best. Don't forget to keep up with the routine tasks such as dead-heading, weeding and watering; watering is best done early in the morning or in the evening. Divide up perennials at the end of August or beginning of September; cut back or prop up perennials that have collapsed, or spread across other plants; spray roses for Blackspot.

Just in case you wondered how the fight started . . . . !! One year, a husband decided to buy his mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift. The next year, he didn't buy her a gift. When she asked him why, he replied, "Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!" and that's how the fight started . . . . I asked my wife, "Where do you want to go for our anniversary?" It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation. "Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said. So I suggested, "How about the kitchen?" and that's when the fight started . . . . My wife and I are watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, "Do you want to have sex?" "No," she answered. I then said, "Is that your final answer?" She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying "Yes." So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend." and that's when the fight started . . . . I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. "I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please." He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?" "Nah, she can order for herself." and that's when the fight started . . . . My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping the channels. She asked, "What's on TV?" I said, "Dust." and then the fight started . . . . My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, "Do you know him?" "Yes," she sighed, "he's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since." "My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?" and then the fight started . . . . I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah, well I couldn't believe it . . . . he was a DWARF!!! He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, "'I AM NOT HAPPY!" So, I looked down at him and said, "Well, then which one are you?" and then the fight started . . . . When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first: the truck, the car, playing golf . . . always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush.

I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." Please TheIWorcestershire Villager 36 The doctors say I will walkmention again, but will always have a limp!when responding to advertisers.
