My Worcestershire Free Solar FREE solar panels means:  

My Worcestershire Free Solar is all about giving away free solar to qualifying properties in Worcestershire. There are no fees, no catches. FREE.

Your electricity bill will reduce – saving you money You will be reducing your carbon footprint, helping the environment, and helping the country reach it’s carbon efficiencies targets

How can we do this? In April 2010 the government introduced an initiative called the FIT Scheme. The FIT scheme allows investors to be paid for all the electricity that panels generate. This means that if you let us put panels on your roof, you benefit from free electricity, and we sell what is left over back to the grid.     

You must own your property (mortgaged is fine) Have a south facing roof or within 30 degrees of south Your roof must be free from shading No slate roofs, thatched roofs, or listed buildings Have 24 square metres of interrupted space on your roof (larger semi detached and detached properties on the whole are fine)

Financial Advice SOLAR POWER A question many people are asking today is “where can I find a low-risk, high-return investment?” Well, there are plenty of high-return investments, but these all carry corresponding high-risks, and similarly there are plenty of low-risk investments paying low returns of 3% or 4%. The one investment that ticks both boxes (and a few others) giving high returns with low risk, is Solar PV, commonly known as Solar Power. With the Government Feed in Tariff (FiT) currently at 21p per kilowatt, having solar panels installed on your roof is the best investment you can make. For those of you who are not sure how the FiT works, and how this can give you the best return on investment currently available at little or no risk, let me explain. The optimum solar installation is a 4kW system on a south facing roof, which will generate on average, approximately 3000kW per year. The FiT pays 21p for every kilowatt of power generated, plus an additional 3.1p on 50% of the kilowatts produced. So, if the system produces 3000kW then the FiT will pay £630 (21p x 3000) plus £46.50 (3.1p x 1500) giving a total of £676.50 paid as tax free, hard cash into your bank account. This amount is paid regardless of how much of the 3000kW you use yourself over the year! Which means, in addition to earning money from your solar system, you also save on your electricity bill by using as much of the power you generate as you want. Now one of the big misconceptions about solar power is that it will completely replace the electricity you currently draw from the national grid. This is not true. What the system will do is supplement the amount of electricity 18 you draw from the national grid, which means

you are then paying for less electricity; on average the saving generated by a 4kW system is estimated to be approximately 50%. So, if your electricity bill is £50 a month, you will save about £25, which is £300 per year and together with the money you’ve earned from the FiT, gives you a total return of £976.50 – and that’s just in year one! The FiT is indexed linked, tax free and guaranteed for 25 years, so your total return will increase each year in line with inflation. To summarise then: a 4kW system from a reputable supplier currently costs about £9k to £10k, which is your investment. You are investing in a tangible object, fitted to the roof of your house, not some intangible concept or company which, in these troubled times, could disappear overnight. There are no movable parts, so it won’t wear out, and again, if it is installed by a reputable company, will come with a 10-year warranty to cover any other possible problems. The FiT pays you an index-linked, tax free amount, guaranteed for 25 years, and you save on your electricity bill. And the cherry on the top: you are doing your bit to reduce the world’s carbon footprint and helping the environment. So, as I said at the beginning, as an investment, Solar PV ticks both the low-risk, high-return boxes, plus a couple of others. If Solar Power is something you are considering, now really is the very best time to have it installed, in fact, there has never been a better time: the cost of installations is at a record low, and with an estimated 10% return on investment, the sooner you get started the better. February in the Garden Spring is just around the corner, with some signs of it already. In the meantime, we have snowdrops; crocuses and winter aconites all in flower among the dead and brown borders, with the daffodils not far behind. However there is still the chance we could get snow and heavy frosts this month, so keep a watch on plants at risk, in particular evergreens whose branches can be damaged under the weight of the snow.

Planting If the ground isn’t completely frozen you will be able to plant shrubs and trees. Towards the end of the month apply an Narcissus cyclamineus organic fertiliser to all fruit trees, as about now, the sap starts to rise and trees begin to waken from their winter sleep. Prepare seedbeds for vegetables: starting them on the windowsill in good light, sow small quantities of lettuce, cabbages, cauliflowers, radishes, c a r r o t s , spinach, salad onions, turnips, peas and broad beans.

Propagation Towards the end of this month you can Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’ start sowing some pelargoniums, snapdragons, sweet peas, lobelias and begonias, but do so in a heated greenhouse or propagator.

Pruning Now is the time to start pruning shrubs and trees into shape, by thinning out unwanted branches and lifting crowns slightly. 20

Prune winter flowering shrubs, including winter heathers, once these have finished flowering. Prune summer flowering shrubs that flower on new wood including roses, jasmines and clematis. This is your last to cut back overgrown shrubs and trees before the birds start nesting.

Maintenance

Cyclamen coum Pewter

Plants will still Group need watering during this month but do so sparingly and don't over water: the soil around the plants should be just slightly damp. Mulch around any shrubs or fruit trees that you have pruned. Newly planted trees and shrubs must be protected from harsh winds and severe weather, and be sure to check tree ties and stakes against high winds. Continue to lift and divide overgrown clumps of herbaceous perennials. And finally, don't foget your garden wildlife: make to leave plenty of food and water out for garden birds, especially on the colder days of the month. Crocus tommasinianus

Does your favourite diet plan fulfill these 3 criteria? Everyday I see so many people asking questions in forums about the latest fad diets, even though they have already joined a weight loss program. If you are also one who runs after fad diets, I would like to ask you one simple question: why is it that you’re searching for another diet plan? Aren't you satisfied with your current weight loss program, and if not, why not? Why is your existing diet plan not enough for you? In this article I will explore some of the possible reasons why you may not be able to lose weight. 1. Are you unable to avoid eating your favorite foods? You know, I have been there and done that. Once under a diet, I resolved never to touch the so-called 'forbidden foods', but I broke my resolution on more than one occasion. My question is - do you want to find out the best diet plan simply because you are not able to get rid of the forbidden foods and therefore unable to lose the amount of weight you would like to? Do you really think that there is any diet plan on earth that would help you lose weight without restricting your food intake in any way? Before you shake your head, let me tell you that more or less, almost all diet programs come with their own restrictions. The best diet plan is one which places the least amount of restrictions on your food habits. In my opinion, if you ever find such a diet plan, you better stick to it throughout your life because it is worth its weight in gold! Remember that in order to lose weight all you need to do is eat healthy foods. Placing unnecessary food restrictions on yourself will do you no good. Depriving yourself of your favorite foods will force you to start binge eating, and over time, you will gain far more weight than what you started with! 2. Do you hate counting calories all the time, throughout your life? You know, I too hate those diet programs that require me to know the calorie content of every single food item that I eat, as well as count calories of every piece of food that I have for my dinner. It is sickening! If you have ever counted calories, you will agree with me that it is not only tedious and boring, but also extremely frustrating. Calorie counting at once makes the otherwise simple weight loss plan look a lot more complicated, which in turn discourages you from achieving your weight loss goals. Consider for instance, what will you do before visiting your favorite fast food restaurant? Would you plan your meal months or weeks in advance, or try to figure out whether the foods that you are going to be served with contain more calories than you are allowed to consume? 24

3. Does your weight loss plan burn your wallet? The ideal weight loss plan should burn your fat, but there are some others that do something else- they burn your pocket instead! You should never join those expensive weight loss programs that require you to buy special foods from them in order to lose weight. As a matter of fact, you don't need to eat any 'special' food' in order to lose weight. You can get all the healthy foods you need from your local supermarket! As you can see, the best weight loss program should be one that would impose little or no food restrictions, wouldn't require you to count calories all through your life, and would be quite affordable at the same time! Have you found such a diet plan yet? Give me a call today and I can put together a healthy diet plan and show you what foods to look out for when doing your shopping and best of all give you a free recipe book packed full of healthy recipes so you never have to worry about what to eat ever again. Pershore Library I

t was with relief that residents in the area heard at a meeting held at the town council offices in November (2010) that Pershore Library seemed set to remain in the centre of the town following discussions between the County Council and the Town Council.

Pershore has long provided both reading matter and education to any person wishing to ‘better’ themselves. As long ago as 1848 a Society was formed calling itself the Christian Institute. Meeting once a fortnight, they would listen to an essay read by one of the members on subjects relating to religion, literature or science, after which discussions took place amongst the members. This society soon opened its membership to any interested person, actively encouraging the ‘working class’ to attend. This resulted in the formation of the Mechanics Institute, at the first meeting of which Mr J. Bushell delivered a reading on ‘The Mental Constitution of Man’. Mr Henry Hudson was appointed President and a Committee of eleven was set up with over eighty members paying one shilling a year (some of the wealthier members contributing more). The Temperance Hall (later the Working Men’s Club) was hired at a cost of £2.2s.0d a year and weekly meetings were held, with a written Constitution being agreed on 28th April 1849. As time passed, the earlier rather pompous 26

and specialised subjects covered gradually became more relevant to a larger audience and a series of evening classes were set up. Although intended to encourage the ‘working classes,’ in the main membership remained among the middle class with the local press being extremely patronising in its reports. The group boasted an eclectic library. This began life as a rather meagre affair but later became quite extensive following the gift of a valuable collection of over 90 volumes from relations of the late Compton John Hanford of Woollas Hall. Although the Society prospered for some years with various social events such as concerts, play readings, whist drives, etc., also taking place, by 1865 the general membership had greatly declined. Therefore a series of Penny Readings was introduced on 5th January 1864, but in spite their popularity, the Society was dissolved, all assets being sold by auction apart from the library books that were distributed as equally as possible by ballot among the members. However, it wasn’t until the passing of a Public Library Act in 1850 that libraries began to become the norm. This Act

allowed towns with a population of over 10,000 to provide a public library and charge a fee of one halfpenny. This charge was raised in 1855 to one or two pence and neighbouring parishes with a population of 5000 or more were also able to set up such an institution. A Report in 1915 by the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust, formed on 3rd October 1913, stated that at that time only 1.5% of the rural English population lived in an area supplied with a library whereas 79% of the urban population was able to access such a facility. Such situation obliged the Director of Education to write to the Trust in 1918 enquiring with regard to setting up school libraries. The County Library Service in Worcestershire began in a small room in 37 Foregate Street, up three flights of twisting narrow stairs with Miss S.F Furgusson appointed as County Librarian. Later this was moved to 28 Foregtate Street and then to County Hall. Towards the end of 1919 another Public Libraries Act was passed. Pershore Branch Library began on 22nd February 1924 with Mrs. Lacey as Librarian. It was set up in the W.I. Hall in Priest Lane opening from 5pm to 7pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. The books, sent from Worcester in large boxes, were placed on tables but the gas lights were dim and the far end of the hall both dark and draughty. The selection was quite small and many of the books second-hand and in need of binding. In 1929 the library moved to the Willow café in Bridge Street in premises owned by Mr & Mrs Spiers, before moving a year later to 62 Bridge Street. Within a short time it moved to the Manse of the Baptist Church in Broad Street. Although the library service continued

during WW2 it was a difficult time as there was little money available and a world shortage of paper. Transport was a problem and there was insufficient staff. Many books disappeared either because they were lost or because some borrowers moved without handing the books back. A member of the library staff at the time recalled ‘At first it just meant crisscrossing window panes with brown sticky paper and climbing onto window sills armed with drawing pins to make certain the blackout curtains didn’t let chinks of light show at the sides, and opening times were changed from 6pm to8pm to 5pm to 7pm. In 1956 the library moved to temporary accommodation in the back of the Working Men’s Club in the High Street when Mrs VM Couchman became branch librarian, remaining as such until 1972. The Club then was very drab and rather dirty with customers having to pass through a reception room often full of beer barrels and a rather pungent smell from the men’s toilets. The only heating was from a portable oil stove. By 1958 over 38,000 books had been issued, with the number of customers increasing, so that in 1959 the whole of the big room was taken on a long lease, and redecorated with an entrance separate from the Club. The hours were extended from twelve to twenty hours a week until on 17th September 1962 it opened for fifty hours a week. In 1971 the library moved to the old infant school in New Road with David Paynter as librarian, the present library opening on 8th July 1975 with Jenny Mainwaring as librarian. Jenny Brumhead, the present librarian joined the staff in 1998. Article written by Marion Freeman

Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold the vegetables while you chop. 3. Avoid arguments with females about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink. 4. For high blood pressure sufferers - simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure on your veins. Remember however to use a timer. 5. A mouse trap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button. 6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives: you'll be too afraid to cough. 7. You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. The Accident

T

he minister asked if anyone in the congregation would like to give thanks for answered prayers. Suzie Smith stood and walked to the podium. She said, "I would like give thanks. Two months ago, my husband, Tom, had a terrible bicycle accident and his scrotum was completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and the doctors didn't know if they could help him." You could hear a muffled gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagine the pain that poor Tom must have experienced. "Tom was unable to hold me or the children," she went on, "and every move caused him terrible pain. We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation, and it turned out they were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Tom's scrotum, and wrap wire around it to hold it in place." Again, the men in the congregation cringed and squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Tom. "Now," Suzie said in a quivering voice, "thank the Lord, Tom is out of hospital and the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should recover completely." All the men sighed with unified relief. The minster rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say. A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium. He said, "I'm Tom Smith." The entire congregation held its breath. "I just want to tell my wife the word is . . . STERNUM!"

customer walked up to a shop assistant and asked, "In what aisle could I find the Irish sausage?"

The assistant asks, "Are you Irish?" The customer, clearly offended, said, "Yes I am. But let me ask you something. If I'd asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian? Or if I'd asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German? Or if I'd asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish? Or if I'd asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican? Or if I'd asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?" The assistant replied, "No, I probably wouldn't." The customer asked, "Well then, just because I asked for Irish sausage, why did you ask me if I'm Irish?" The assistant replied, "Because you're in Halfords."
