Historic Visit of the Balangays to Singapore and RSYC

AT THE HELM COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members of RSYC The past several months have been a rather busy period for the RSYC Committee on several counts. Since our election on 25 June 2010, and the approval given by the membership to proceed with the Club’s development plans, our No.1 focus has been to check out the best possible ways to move forward. I am happy to report to you that the pre-qualification of contractors for the construction of the multi-storey dry stack building was advertised in the media on 1 and 6 October 2010, and for the new four-storey residential wing on 15 and 20 October. A satisfactory number of contractors have indicated their interest to tender for the projects. These will be scrutinised by the Development Sub-Committee (DSC) in consultation with and as recommended by our project consultants. Our schedule is for the tender for both projects to be out before the end of this year. We have also been successful in securing the necessary limited financing for the projects as approved by members at our last Annual General Meeting in June 2010. Our next plan of action is to study how best we can upgrade the existing club facilities. As mentioned by Vice Commodore Low Teo Ping in our previous magazine, we should not just rest on our laurels but must move forward to meet new changing lifestyles and members’ needs. I am sure together with our impressive history and legacy dating back to 1826, we will make the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club one of the preferred clubs in Singapore that all of us will be proud to be associated with. Appropriate announcements will be made as and when they become available. In line with our development plans, RSYC will also be embarking on a new membership drive shortly. If you have friends whom you wish to invite to the launch, please contact the Membership Department for an invitation. I wish also to inform you that we have received the resignation of our General Manager, Dr Matthew Yap, on 1 October 2010. We have begun the process of looking for a suitable replacement. In the interim, the various Heads of Department will take the lead in their areas of responsibility. Looking ahead, we need to work closely together to ensure the programmes planned for the coming months are carried out smoothly with the help of our Management Team. We believe we have a strong team of capable and dedicated HODs, supported by good staff who are doing a sterling job, sometimes under challenging circumstances. As the old year 2010 draws to a close in the coming weeks, please continue to give your Club the support it needs. I want to commend the F&B Team under the able leadership of Lionel Roberts. They have planned enticing menus for you all this Christmas and holiday season. Just look through the ‘Bon Appetit’ pages for the irresistible gourmet and popular local dishes. The takeaway Christmas goodies will be available as usual, if you are planning to celebrate at home. We do urge you to entertain your friends at the Club, to give the great chef at home a break! NOTES FROM THE EDITOR Dear Members 2010 has been quite a year for us. Among other things, we finally saw the publication of our heritage book, something that we said we wanted to do more than a decade ago. We appealed to members for heritage materials, and some responded magnificently. Thank you all who responded, in recollections of experiences as well as in materials like old photographs, annual reports and other memorabilia. But even as the book ‘Three Burgees’ is now published, materials are still coming in. And so we want you to know that, yes, we are still accepting any RSYC materials that you may still have in that old box in the attic, or tucked away somewhere and long forgotten. We recently received an old photograph via email from Steven Linehan, whose father Charles Linehan was a member in Singapore shortly after World War Two. It was a picture taken in1947 and the sender wanted to know if it was the RSYC clubhouse. (See picture below.) Well, it wasn’t quite the clubhouse at Trafalgar Street, but it was the Annexe that was used as the bachelor quarters for some lucky members then. Former club secretary John Bruce, whom I happened to know (when I was with the Ford assembly plant at Bukit Timah in the early 1960s and he was the general manager of the Ford dealership, Universal Cars at Orchard Road) actually lived there in 1954. John was honorary secretary of RSYC in 1956. He contributed an article in 2008 about his experiences as a resident in the Annexe and it was published in the Club magazine and also in ‘Three Burgees’ (page 127-128). Another matter I want to share with you is that we are always looking for articles about sailing or boating in this region. As a yacht club, we do want to keep our members current on the boating scene. So in this issue of RSYC Magazine, we feature two such stories. One is about some three dozen adventurous Filipinos emulating the exploits of the ancient Asian seafarers in their balangays. The other is about some modern sailors taking delivery of a new motor yacht, the Santa Maria, and sailing her from Kota Kinabalu to the Lion City. So in the new year 2011, we welcome any old memorabilia about RSYC and at the same time ask you to share with us your boating experiences in Asian waters. The regattas that take advantage of the monsoon winds in January and July, we hope will be featured strongly in this magazine in the coming months. ON THE COVER From the Manila Yacht Club came word that a unique expedition using replicas of ancient wooden boats called balangays was about to hit our shores. These boats had no compass, GPS or engines, except one logistics/supply vessel. They relied on their sails and the navigational skills of the intrepid crew. Precise ETA was rather difficult to obtain, so we could only alert some of our members to watch their arrival. Nevertheless, Commodore Tan Kay Toh gathered some Committee members and staff to join the Philippines Ambassador and friends from the Philippine community in Singapore to give the visitors a warm welcome. They berthed at our marina on 25 September 2010 for three days while the crew explored the city. Read about the amazing voyage of the balangays on page 6.

We are happy to report that Maricel Sicat has been selected as Employee of the 3rd Quarter 2010. Known to her colleagues and many friends simply as “Cel”, Ms Sicat joined RSYC on 6 August 2008 and is currently the membership sales coordinator in the Membership Department. She has a friendly and charming disposition, but more importantly, she is considered by many to be a great team player, hard working and highly responsible. Her supervisor adds: “Maricel has shown great teamwork and a willingness to go the extra mile for her colleagues.” Well done, Cel, on clinching this award for the 3rd quarter. A well deserved recognition!

CLUB NEWS September. This coming New Year’s Eve party is for the children mainly, with games and fun things to do. For the adults, we will celebrate it with good eating and drinking and great company. We hope to see many of you either at The Bridge or The Wharf and the Foreshore, where our chefs will prepare a fabulous feast of the best of East and West. EXCITEMENT IN THE JACKPOT ROOM The buzz continued in the Jackpot Room on the evening of 11 October 2010 when the counting of the Briefcase of Notes took place. There were 850 guess numbers posted up on the board, with the amounts ranging from $200 to $6,800. Some of the most popular numbers were 888 / 1188 / 1222 / 1234 / 1288 / 1688 and 1888. No prizes for guessing the dialect or ethnic background of most of the players. But the real winners were two ladies who both submitted the same correct amount of $1,246. The two lucky winners sharing the prize money were Ms Helen and Ms Jesamine. Congratulations! If you want to know what’s the next exciting event that is coming up soon, drop by the Jackpot Room the next time you’re at the Club. The game is called ‘Treasure Chest’ and it starts on Monday 13 December 2010. There are other fun games there too, as given in the report on page 24.

OBITUARY

It is with much sadness that we report the recent passing of Mr Peter Seah Guan Leng, a former Treasurer of RSYC and member since 1977. The late Mr Seah, age 77, was Treasurer for three years, from 1998 to 2000, and is best remembered as the key person who secured the loan for RSYC to complete the accommodation wing of our current clubhouse. Peter was an avid boater and owner of a cabin cruiser. He and his family participated in many boat trips to Malaysia and Indonesia. We send our sincere condolences to the Seah family at this time of bereavement.

Voyage of the Balangay S

Historic boats visit RSYC

ince opening in 1999, the RSYC marina has seen all sorts of boats berthed here: from the record-setting trimaran of legendary sailor Dame Ellen MacArthur to the iconic Rainbow Warrior of Greenpeace fame. But none as colourful and ancient in design as the three Balangay vessels that arrived from the Philippines on 25 September 2010. On hand to receive the leader and crew were the Philippines Ambassador, H.E. Minda CalaguianCruz, Commodore Tan Kay Toh, Honorary Secretary Balakrishnan B. and RSYC members and friends from the local Filipino community. What’s a balangay, you may ask. It’s a special type of wooden vessel, a replica of an ancient boat discovered a few decades ago in the city of Butuan in the southern Philippines. Archaeologists from the National Museum of the Philippines found nine of these vessels in the 1970s and eventually excavated three of them. The oldest is believed to date back to 320 AD, according to radiocarbon-dating tests. These three artifacts are now displayed in museums in the Philippines. The balangay was mentioned in the 16th century ‘Chronicles of Pigafetta’. Now fast forward to the 21st century. The idea to build the replicas and use them to retrace the routes sailed by early Southeast Asians occurred to voyage leader Arturo T. Valdez, 62, a former Undersecretary of the Philippines Department of Transportation and Communications, a few years ago. Boat Building In 2007 began the careful construction of the balangays by master boat builders from the islands

of Sibutu and Sitangkay in Tawi-Tawi. Using skills handed down through generations, they employed the same boat-building techniques of the 4th, 13th and 14th centuries – plank built, lashed lug, edge pegged and shell-first construction. In September 2009, the first balangay set forth from the Manila Yacht Club marina for the first leg of the adventure: some 2,100 nautical miles that would see the boats docking in 62 ports all over the Philippines. The 38-member crew, including representatives from the Philippine Coast Guard and Navy, completed their journey only in mid-August 2010. Thanks to rough weather, they visited 80 ports instead of the intended 62! With the Philippines portion of the journey completed successfully, the team is currently on the second leg: visiting several Southeast Asian countries on a journey of friendship as well as discovery of its ancient capability of sailing without modern navigational aids. Said Mr Valdez: “The two main vessels – named Diwata Ng Lahi (Enchantress of the Race) and Masawa Hong Butuan (Beacon of Butuan) – have no engines, no compass, no GPS. Like the earliest mariners, we steer by the sun, the stars and the wind.”

The third vessel named Sama Tawi-Tawi (Sama of Tawi-Tawi) is a supply and logistic boat with an 85 HP Yanmar marine engine. It joined the fleet only in July this year. The three boats each measuring 66ft, 81ft and 75ft in length, have displacements ranging from 4 tons to 7 tons. In Singapore for three days, after making port calls in Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia, the intrepid crew is continuing their voyage across the region, to Thailand, Cambodia

and Vietnam for the rest of 2010. Next year they will attempt the third leg: sailing to Madagascar to the west and Polynesia to the east, since historical records indicate that ancient Southeast Asians also traveled to these far-flung islands using the balangay, said Mr Valdez. The Children had a Wonderful Time This year’s Charity Cruise took place on Saturday 2 October 2010 and the beneficiaries were some two dozen kids from the Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home and the Salvation Army. It’s an old tradition at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club that some members and friends come forward every year to take these children, from ages 8 to 14, for an outing to a nearby island for a day of fun and games. And what fun they had! Best summarised by one of the boys who simply exclaimed: “This is the best day in my life!”

The venue was Pulau Hantu in the southern islands. There were seven motor yachts and three jet-skis. Almost ten members, mostly boat owners, and two volunteers without jet-skis but possess the expertise, took the day off to give the kids a grand time. Ten RSYC staff also pitched in to help lead and organise the games, anchored by Winson Yap from events.

The picnic lunch on the island was also a special treat for all. When the group returned to the clubhouse that afternoon, for some ice-cream and refreshments, Commodore Tan Kay Toh presented to the two homes a copy each of the ‘Three Burgees” to commemorate their visit. As for our staff, they too thought it was a fun and memorable day at the beach. Well done, one and all!

The biggest thrills for the children was riding the jet-skis. For almost all, that was a first-time experience. One even told us in all seriousness that “when I grow up, I want to be a jet-ski rider!” Some members who contributed in cash and kind included the “RSYC 7th Month Committee” that donated $1,000 and a member also supplied 40 goodie bags.

Wines of the Month for November & December RED WINE Bodega Lurton Tierra De Luna Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Generally bright red in colour. On the palate, we find aromas of citrus fruit and very fine tannins, giving structure to the wine. To be drunk young but will not disappoint after a few years in the bottle. The Cabernet Sauvignon, a varietal from Bordeaux, expresses itself very differently, being either herby nor peppery but very fruity, easy and silky. WHITE WINE Bodega Lurton Tierra De Luna Chardonnay 2008/2009 The colour is beautiful, bright yellow. The palate has a strong buttery taste and expresses hazelnut and toasted bread flavours. From KK to RSYC on board the new

Santa Maria A

s one who began seafaring almost 60 years ago and who has taught navigation and seamanship throughout much of that time, there was no hesitation in accepting longtime friend Dr David Haines’ invitation to assist with the final stage of the delivery voyage of his new motoryacht Santa Maria from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Northern Borneo to Singapore via Pulau Tioman in Peninsular Malaysia. It was August, S E monsoon time, so favourable weather was expected. Five years had passed since I was last aboard a small motor-yacht and that was from Singapore to Penang in the calm coastal waters of the Malacca Strait. After flying from Wellington to KK via Sydney and Singapore, arrival at the large efficient new terminal in KK was a pleasant surprise. David travelled from Bangkok via Singapore Bird nesting on and conveniently arrived Capt Short’s pate. at the old terminal half an hour later. We proceeded by taxi to the attractive Sutera Harbour Marina where Santa Maria was lying at an inner berth. A fine looking vessel, she impressed even before stepping on board. As we were unable to clear

out of the port before offices opened on Monday morning, the rest of the weekend was spent preparing for the voyage. Sutera Harbour provided a courtesy bus into town, the trip to the main market taking only 10 minutes. In this respect KK proved to be very convenient, fresh food was purchased at the market and the rest in the shopping mall across the road. Not so convenient though was the half hour taxi ride to the port office, which, understandably, is near the commercial port to the north of the marina. Roads are good and traffic jams minimal. Although we went ashore at 0730 on the Monday morning, it was 1100 before we departed from the marina on an overcast but fine morning with a light north easterly. As the marina became more distant, the magnificent 4000 metre Mount Kinabalu with its serated peak, dominated the horizon and my thoughts went to the days before ‘electronic navigation’ when regular compass bearings of the mountain would have been taken until it was lost in the haze during the afternoon. With only the two of us on board, we decided that six

SPECIAL FEATURE hour watches would be kept. Also, to avoid a night passage through the oil fields with their many navigational hazards, we would head due west from Sutera Harbour out into the S China Sea until a course of 250 would take us north of Natuna and on to Tioman. Santa Maria’s electronic navigation equipment performed beautifully. Way points were set, she headed steadily towards them and we were confident of our position at all times. Visibility was good, however during the first 24 hours there was a lot of motion due a force 4 N’ly wind and moderate NE’ly swell, due we concluded to the distortion to the extensive monsoonal air flow between the Philippines and China by the recent passage of a typhoon. With the twin diesels running smoothly at 1600 revs, the passage to Tioman took 100 hours at a steady speed of between seven and eight knots. As we moved across the S China Sea, sea and swell eased. Except in the few showers experienced during the early stages, visibility was very good, which was just as well as there were many fishing vessels with gear in the water, some unlit at night. A good lookout and a number of course alterations were necessary. Although the frequency of the shipping increased, particularly between Natuna and Tioman, the main concern continued to be the fishing vessels and their gear. The ships and most of the fishing vessels were detected electronically in good time, but this was not the case with some smaller vessels and their gear. In addition to the electronic ‘lookout’, a good visual lookout was essential, which was how the six hour watches were mainly occupied. In many respects the passage was a routine one, with nothing exceptional to report, however on the second afternoon, well away from land, two small birds began to accompany us and soon came on board. They were not seabirds, so we assumed they were weary of their search for land and looking for a place to rest. We were struck by how friendly they were, particularly as a favourite perch was on our heads. Why? Did the little hair we had on top have a similar effect to perching on a branch? That evening around 2000 both birds were perched on the top of the fridge door, face to face as in the usual image of love birds. This touching scene changed to a sad one a few hours later, when one of the birds was dead on the deck below the fridge door and the other had disappeared. We anchored among about a dozen other yachts off the marina at Tioman at 1500 on Friday 13 August. A safe anchorage a short distance off the beach of this attractive heavily wooded high island surrounded by a marine park. An unreliable outboard had us rowing ashore in the dinghy, then back on board for the night. Next morning we went ashore again to clear out of Malaysia, as our next port would be Singapore. We departed at 1300 and later that

afternoon anchored near the beach at Pulau Lima off Tinggi for a swim and a meal until midnight, as we planned to enter Singapore Strait at dawn. We expected to see many ships when approaching the eastern entrance to Singapore Strait, but were surprised to see so many at anchor - 37 large ships, mainly tankers and bulk carriers, were showing on the AIS as we turned into the Strait. From then on there were many more at anchor, mainly in Malaysian waters. This of course being in addition to the traffic passing through the Strait. As we moved further west into the Singapore anchorages, ‘Singapore Strait ship park’ aptly described the situation, one which prompted marine insurers last year to issue a warning about increased collision risk because of the density of the ships at anchor in this area. There can’t be a better place in the world for observing shipping at work. Ships of all types, ships transiting between the China Sea and the Indian Ocean, ships entering or leaving one of the world’s busiest ports, ships embarking and disembarking pilots, fast ferries moving through the traffic, harbour and pleasure craft finding their way. We found our way, around St John’s Island, north through the Western Anchorage and into the Republic of Singapore Yacht club, tying up alongside at 1300. Clearance was quick and efficient and by 1400 a welcoming party was on board and a welcome dinner - and birthday greeting for David - well in hand. Santa Maria, a Seahorse 52, proved well designed and equipped, reliable and, at 7 knots, very comfortable. It was a pleasure to be on board for the six days. A 52 footer is a small vessel to take onto the high seas and even though the SW monsoon is the right time to cross the S. China Sea, considerable rolling and pitching can be expected. She handled this very well, without the use of the flopper stoppers. We were able to move around readily, holding on to rails and other fixed objects, as well as cook, eat and sleep. My only concerns were the need for higher seating on the flying bridge to enable the horizon to be seen over the dodger while sitting comfortably and the need for less light on the foredeck to improve the lookout at night. Most of that light came from the mast light and this could be easily remedied by fixing a platform below the mast light. It was a pleasure to assist with the final stage of the delivery of Santa Maria from the Pearl River Estuary, a significant addition to the Singapore based fleet of recreational craft, one that will enable extensive cruising, within or beyond SE Asia. RSYC hosts 2nd Asia Superyacht Conference Gala Dinner on 12 October 2010 The 2nd Asia Superyacht Conference was held in Singapore on 12 to 14 October 2010, and RSYC had the pleasure of hosting the delegates on the first night. Over 150 delegates attended the Gala Dinner, which started with cocktails at the Foreshore followed by a sit-down dinner at the Nautica Room. Rear Commodore Karl Nilssen, had the opportunity to showcase the facilities and services available for superyachts at RSYC via a powerpoint presentation as well.

2 NParks seeks the co-operation of the community in observing the provisions of the Parks and Trees Act 2005 and the Parks and Trees Regulations 2005 when they are in this area. In particular, except where a permit has been obtained from NParks, the following are to be observed: i. No vessel or craft shall enter or remain in Chek Jawa Wetlands;

iii. No vessel or craft shall land at Pulau Sekudu or anywhere within Chek Jawa Wetlands; iv. There shall be no collection of any organism (including remains of an organism) or use of rods, lines, hooks, nets and traps within Chek Jawa Wetlands; v.
