he entrepreneurs behind a hydroponic garden in Old Town hope their setup inspires more Mankatoans to pursue urban farming. Landon Brown and Matthew Indorf of Sustainably Local have been growing lettuce via their hydroponic system at the Hub Food Park for months. They’ve even handed out leafy samples to the park’s food truck patrons. The two see the garden, enclosed within a wooden structure they built, as an education tool for locals interested in sustainability. “Soil-less farming is not new by any means, but as a society, and especially in our community, we aren’t utilizing it to its full potential,” Brown said. “Our goal is to be a community resource and further the narrative about sustainability in all forms.” The system uses the nutrient film technique, where a shallow stream of nutrient-rich water circulates past plants’ roots in channels. Once you add water, solar panels charge the batteries, the batteries power the pump and it essentially runs itself, Indorf said. “Really the whole inspiration was to try to create a system that was entirely self-sustaining,” he said. “Once you put some water in there, once you put in some seeds, everything just works on its own.” All was working as intended until a recent hiccup. The system’s solar controller malfunctioned during the weekend, cutting off the pump’s energy and causing the crops to wilt. Both men chalk the problem up

know: NORTH MANKATO — TheHow’s it going, MA city of North Mankato plans YOR? to improve Belgrade Avenue near Range Street coinciding with a new bank and restaurant being built next year, but city staff is looking at future pedestrian improvements now. There’s a chance Belgrade Avenue could be cut down to three lanes near the future Frandsen Bank & Trust and Rooftop Bar + Kitchen to make room for a mid-block pedestrian crossing. The North Mankato City Council won’t make a decision until staff see how the new buildings impact foot traffic. “I think they want to see how the development plays out before they make any major traffic calming or pedestrian infrastructure in the middle of the 200 block of Belgrade Avenue,” City Administrator John Harrenstein said Monday after the council reviewed the project with staff and city engineers. The new buildings, which are set to go up next year, have spurred discussions over everything from whether the architectural designs fit with the neighborhood

The hydroponic system on display at the Hub Food Park uses the nutrient film technique, where a shallow stream of nutrient-rich water circulates past plants’ roots in channels. The system’s builders say it’s designed to be self-sustainable once people add water and seeds. to their novice electrician skills rather than the design. They expect another lettuce crop to be “bushy” again within 10 to 14 days. Sustainably Local, the limited liability company they started, evolved out of Brown and Carter Person’s 2017 business pitch at Minnesota State University for building farms within easily portable and stackable storage containers. The contest funding they sought ended up going to the Mankato Makerspace, which is where the hydroponic system was built. The shipping container idea wasn’t the best fit for the Mankato area, Brown said, so they retooled. The focus switched to educating people on how to make a compact sustainable garden system work. “This is kind of a trial run,” Indorf said of the system. “This is a concept

we want to perfect and we want to use it as a way to educate the community as to what the benefits of urban agriculture are and how far you can take it.” Shane Bowyer an assistant professor of management at MSU, remembered Brown and Person’s pitch in 2017. He’s seen many an entrepreneurial pitch at funding events through the years and said it’s not uncommon for the ideas to pop back up in new forms. “There’s so many of them that take off, some that take years to develop and some that don’t,” he said. “That’s just the nature of that entrepreneurial area.” He credited Brown and the others’ persistence on their idea, while saying Mankato has a strong

Climate experts at U.N.: less talk more action The Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS — Leader after leader told the United Nations on Monday that they will do more to prevent a warming world from reaching even more dangerous levels. But as they made their pledges at the Climate Action Summit, they and others conceded it was not enough. MANKATO — MinneapolisSt. Paul International is, not surprisingly, Minnesota’s busiest airport. Next in line is not the airport in Rochester or the one in Duluth. It’s not St. Paul’s Holman Field or Eden Prairie’s Flying Cloud. Minnesota State University’s soaring pilot-training program has moved the Mankato Regional Airport ahead of all of those in total operations. “It’s the second busiest airport in the state after MSP,” Deputy City Manager Alison Zelms told the City Council Monday night. “... It’s a little untraditional for a regional airport — there’s a lot going on.” And it’s reached a point that the city needs to look at adding a control tower, something that could cost $5 million or more to build and equip and another $600,000 a year to staff and operate,

In 1880, Mankato was the fourth largest city in Minnesota with a population of 5,500. Today, more than 50,000 people call Mankato and North Mankato home. In 1852, Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claims along these banks and founded the town of Mankato along the banks of the Minnesota River. The city was established on land purchased in a treaty between the U.S. government and the Dakota; the breaking of this treaty by the government led to the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862. North Mankato, which sits just across the river, was established in 1898. The first bridge between North Mankato and Mankato was the Veteran’s memorial Bridge, an iron truss bridge constructed in 1879. The bridge represented an interdependence and partnership between the cities that continues. Today, many memorials and buildings exist to commemorate the diverse and important history that has shaped the Greater Mankato area. The mall is home to many well-known brand names as well as some unique to our location and is often a venue for craft and home shows, as well as other events. Hilltop Mankato expands beyond the mall. As Mankato has grown, so have the shopping corridors. Get up to the Hilltop and you will find several of the national chains as well as some Minnesota favorites, such as Mainstream Boutique that shoppers have all come to recognize and appreciate.

Shop unique

Mankato’s City Center offers a truly unique shopping experience. Shopping in this area includes quaint shops and boutiques that offer a distinctive blend of specialty products, local artisan wares and “just what you’re looking for” gifts at African Fashions, Neutral Groundz, or The Refinery. For wow-worthy collectibles, games and toys, head over to Double Play located on Front Street, just a block away from Mankato’s local juice bar, WYSIWYG.

2020 GUIDE TO VISITING & LIVING IN GREATER MANKATO

citycentermankato.com

Festival and Annual Events in the City Center

Annual festivities draw people to City Center Mankato again and again for food, music, art and family fun. The Business on Belgrade association has transformed the main street of Lower North Mankato into a high-energy festival zone. In July, Blues on Belgrade brings a day of great tunes. Bier on Belgrade (October) is Greater Mankato’s Oktoberfest celebration, while the kids get their day at Bells on Belgrade (December). Live music is always a draw. RibFest at Vetter Stone Amphitheatre (August) is not just about amazing ribs – it’s also four days of top national touring acts! Minnesota bands perform in the community favorite Songs on the Lawn (June) and Alive After Five (August) outdoor concert series in Civic Center Plaza. The Old TownMM Art Fair (September) also features lots of local music, along with unique and compelling art in a relaxed outdoor atmosphere. Holidays bring special celebrations. Mankato’s July 4th Red, Hot, Boom in Riverfront Park features music by the Mankato Symphony Orchestra and, of course, fireworks. Both the Betsy-Tacy houses and the R.D. Hubbard House offer views of Christmas past during December events. The annual Kiwanis Holiday Lights display in Sibley Park runs from the day after Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve and is ranked as one of Minnesota’s top holiday lights experiences.

CityArt The CityArt program, a collaboration of the City Center Partnership and the Twin Rivers Council for the Arts, provides thrilling public art experiences for City Center residents and visitors. They include: CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour

2020 marks the 10th annual CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour, an exciting rotating exhibit of outdoor sculptures displayed year-round in the City Centers of Mankato and North Mankato. Artists from around the world display their sculptures, and from May to October, you can vote for your favorite. The People’s Choice-winning sculpture is then purchased for permanent installation in the City Center. For a tour map, visit www.cityartmankato.com.

CityArt On the Go

CityArt on the Go is an exhibit of 20 traffic signal box murals. Pedestrians and drivers enjoy seeing something different about the traffic signal boxes in the City Center, as infrastructure is transformed into colorful art.

CityArt Public Art Tour

The CityArt Public Art Tour is a selfguided walking tour of over 40 unique pieces of art, including the People’s Choice Award winners from previous Walking Sculpture Tours and the new public art works installed in Old Town in 2018. Learn more and find a map at cityartmankato.com.

2020 GUIDE TO VISITING & LIVING IN GREATER MANKATO

ARTS & CULTURE Greater Mankato boasts a thriving arts community, with five public art galleries, three dance companies, four community choruses, the symphony orchestra and a theatre group. In addition, area colleges offer outstanding, theater, music, dance, and visual and written arts programs. While strolling around the City Center, art is all around you with the annual CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour. A new City Center art attraction is the “Largest Canvas in Minnesota” which refers to the Ardent Mills silo art, by Australian artist Guido Van Helten. This community project was a local effort eight years in the making, and came to fruition because of the support of 60 local donors to make the $250,000 silo art come to life! For this reason and more, Mankato has been declared the “artiest town in southern Minnesota.”
