Brown City

Deckerville

Founded in 1881, the city of Brown City is a full service community, offering a variety of businesses and professional services.  We host the annual Thumb Soybean Festival the second weekend in June. Event highlights include a carnival, classic car show, music and fireworks. Enjoy our beautiful 76+ acre community park, filled with ball diamonds, picnic facilities, playgrounds and soccer fields. To see us, take M-90 which travels through the city. The road through town is also known as Main Street. See ad page 13. Brown City Community: http://www.ci.brown-city.mi.us/

Deckerville takes its name from Charles Decker, who launched a lumber business here in 1870.  Decker’s son, Martin, became the settlement’s first postmaster that same year.  Deckerville incorporated as a village in 1893 and to this day is home to a number of Charles’ descendents. Located just 6 miles from the Lake Huron shoreline, Deckerville has several shops and restaurants, as well as a full-service hospital and library available for campers and resorters. During the summertime, visitors can take a dip in the village’s outdoor pool or roll a few balls at the local bowling alley.  In August, past and present villagers gather for the Deckerville Homecoming festival, which features a tractor pull, parade, fireworks and many more activities.  In mid September, residents mark the beginning of fall with Oktoberfest.  Don’t forget about their Dickens of a Christmas in December.  Come celebrate the change of seasons in Deckerville!  See ad page 13. Croswell

Lexington

Croswell is an excellent example of Thumb Area living:  friendly people of the present who take great pride in their past. Croswell is home to a locally famous swinging footbridge built in 1905 over the Black River, which bisects the city on its way to Port Huron and the Great Lake. A folksy sign at the east end of the suspension bridge advises pedestrians to “Be Good To Your Mother-in-Law.” The city itself is dotted with pre-Civil War homes and buildings. Lumbering dominated Croswell until the Great Thumb Fire of 1881.  Since then, agriculture has been the dominant economic activity, especially sugar beets, symbolized by the city’s iconic Pioneer Sugar plant. The annual Croswell Fair is in August this year and features livestock exhibits and a midway full of rides. The Swinging Bridge Festival in August celebrates the upcoming harvest with a Cardboard Regatta on the Black River. See ads on page 6 and 46.

When Lexington was founded in 1835, it became the first outpost north of Port Huron.  Eleven years later, Reuben Diamond named the village after the Battle of Lexington, in which his wife’s cousin, Ethan Allen, fought during the Revolutionary War. The Cadillac Hotel has stood at the heart of village life since its days as a log hotel from 1840 to 1860, when it was rebuilt following a fire.   Steamships and freighters made regular stops at the port of Lexington for lumber and agricultural products until the Great Storm of 1913 destroyed the village’s long dock into Lake Huron.  Lexington is now noted for its many Victorian homes and historic buildings filled with shops, restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts.  With its handful of pretty parks and its quaint downtown, the village is the summertime host of the Music in the Park Series, Thumb Fest, the Lexington Art Fair and the annual Bach Festival.  Protected by a limestone seawall, Lexington’s picturesque marina doubles as an official State of Michigan Harbor of Refuge. Its beach offers visitors a chance to kick back and enjoy the summer. Nearby golf courses, a bike trail to Croswell, seasonal hunting spots, abundant fishing and a thriving cottage culture make Lexington a vacation mini-mecca. See ad page 7. Sandusky

Marlette, located in the heart of Michigan’s Thumb, was first settled in the mid-1800’s by Canadians lured by the tall timber and fertile soil of the area.  The lumber industry gave way to farming after the Great Thumb Fire of 1881, with sugar beets, soy beans and corn dominating production today. A large Amish community gives the countryside around Marlette the aura of a bygone era, complete with horse-drawn buggies and outlets selling produce, furniture and baked goods. The friendly city offers a handful of recreational options, including a challenging nine-hole public golf course, a community swimming pool, various agri-tourism opportunities and a playground.  One of the biggest employers in the area is Marlette Regional Hospital. Visitors to Marlette may stay in a bed-and-breakfast, stroll the smalltown shopping district and enjoy a casual meal far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. See ad page 12.

Sandusky, located 15 miles inland from Port Sanilac at the intersection of M-46 and M-19, is the county seat of Sanilac County. Sandusky offers all the services and resources you’d expect from a much larger city: top-notch medical care, a variety of shopping opportunities, lodging, dining, up-to-date library, excellent law enforcement, emergency services and more.  Farming and industry combine to make Sandusky an honest, hard working, progressive and safe community. Sandusky has many recreational opportunities and is a beehive of activity.  It is home to the annual Michigan Thumb Festival in June, the Sanilac County 4-H Fair in August and popular Original Country Christmas Lighted Farm Implement Parade in December. Sandusky boasts the only tri-plex movie theater in the county as well as a bowling alley, basketball courts, fully handicapped accessible playground in its city park and a public golf course. In the surrounding area, the farmland provides ample hunting opportunities throughout the year as well as many miles of snowmobile trails. See ads page 10.

Port Sanilac The village now known as Port Sanilac was founded in the early 1840’s by lumbermen who erected a shelter close enough to the beach that it could be seen by passing Great Lakes sailors.  The sailors christened the settlement after its appearance – “Bark Shanty Point.” In 1857, the residents officially changed the name of their hometown to Port Sanilac.  By then, the village was in full swing.  A saw mill, schoolhouse and general store opened in the late 1840’s.  In 1850, Raymond Hardware opened – and never closed: it is currently the oldest continuously operated hardware store in Michigan. The blue water of Lake Huron and its sandy beaches have always been Port Sanilac’s chief attractions.  The Port Sanilac Lighthouse began illuminating the local waters in 1886 and has been a popular tourist destination ever since.  The village’s Harbor of Refuge offers 32 seasonal slips and 35 transient slips as well as a convenient diving launch-site for the Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve, which encompasses 163 square miles of protected lake bottom featuring shipwrecks dating back to 1864. Port Sanilac is also home to the Barn Theatre and the Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum, a 10-acre campus that showcases eight historical buildings. The community features a handful of casual dining spots, bed-and-breakfasts, the Sanilac District Library, and a vibrant cottage culture.  See ad page 11. Carsonville, Applegate, Argyle, Melvin, Minden City, Forester, Forestville, Peck, Snover Scattered throughout Sanilac County are several smaller communities, each with its own history and each with its unique attractions.  Carsonville, for example, was founded in 1853 by Silas Hall and was known as Hall’s Corners until 1884 when businessman Arthur Carson renamed the settlement.  In Peck, you can find a hardware store straight out of the 1950’s. A bar in Applegate serves up some of the best pizza in the county. Despite their differences, the communities share the small-town friendliness and helpfulness that are common throughout Sanilac County.

Sailing

Whether your sailboat is your “cottage on the lake” or your “one design racer”, sailing has been rooted in Port Sanilac since the harbor was built in 1951.  With the addition of a second Harbor of Refuge located in Lexington in 1975, sailing has become a popular recreation activity for vacationing mariners and local sailors alike in Sanilac County. The Sanilac shoreline has become an excellent vantage point for viewing the legendary Port Huron to Mackinaw Yacht Race.  This race, held in July each summer, has become more of a spectator sport than ever.  The new race course has the 300 boat fleet hugging the shoreline.  The spectacular scene of colorful spinnakers contrasted against the deep blue waters of Lake Huron are a sight that postcards and vacation memories are made of. Local Port Huron Racing Federation (PHRF) boat racing is held from late May through late September. The Bark Shanty Sail Club hosts theses races along with an annual Lake Huron Yachting Association regatta.

Fishing

With the ice breakup in late March comes the excitement of early spring fishing.  The water is still cold and it gives the angler an advantage for finding trout, salmon or steelhead. The fish seek the warm water of the stream runoff and are close to shore.  Shallow water fishing is most productive.  Most fishing tournaments are run in May and early June. As the water warms, the big fish go deep and offshore.  By late June the perch start coming in.  Perch populations have grown in recent years.  The DNR reports that the Sanilac area has been an anomaly for perch count.  You may want to include that there is the Perch of July Fishing Tournament in Port Sanilac.  Perch fishing in the past couple of years has stayed strong right into the fall when the salmon and trout run.  The fall months bring the spawning season.  Brown trout are frequently caught near streams and harbor entrances. In September and October of 2008, the DNR expanded their fish plantings out of Port Sanilac.  A fish count completed at that time showed a good cross section of species in the twenty to forty foot depth contour.

RECREATION

Water Recreation

Diving

Since the shipwreck discovery of the steamer “Regina” in the 1980’s, recreational diving has exploded along the Sanilac shoreline.  There are over 14 different wrecks within an hour of Port Sanilac or Lexington. Water clarity has dramatically increased in Lake Huron over the past 15 years.  It is not uncommon to hear reports of 75 foot visibility.  Deep and shallow water dives are equally rewarding. With all the interest generated by the many wrecks of the Great Storm of 1913, the Sanilac Underwater Preserve was formed to protect these wrecks from treasure hunters and salvagers. Commercial dive charters operate out of both Lexington and Port Sanilac harbors. Compressed air and dive supplies are available in Port Sanilac.  Several Detroit metropolitan area dive shops organize dive trips to the Thumb area.

Kayaking

Kayaking along the shores of Lake Huron is gaining in popularity. The clean, clear water; the calm, soothing action of the waves; and the beauty of the shoreline all combine to give the novice or experienced kayaker a refreshing experience. Take the opportunity to explore isolated beaches easily accessible from the water. Now with the introduction of the Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail linking Saginaw Bay, around Lake Huron through the southern tip of Sanilac County, distances between landings can be as little as a mile or less.  Visit thumbtrails.com for more info.  See map, page 25. Delicious, healthy, and fresh, you will find a wide variety of locally grown farm products at our Farmers Markets. Conventionally grown fruits, vegetables, dairy, beef, pork, poultry, grains, sugar, and honey are available as well as a similar assortment of organically raised goods.  Sanilac County is ranked in the top ten Michigan counties for the production of Organic food with 12 growers certified on 3,295 acres. Heritage seeds are utilized when possible. Passed down through generations these seed selections have been chosen for flavor. Only by sampling them can you understand how tasty these fruits and vegetables can be.   The Sandusky Farmers market is located downtown at M-46, west side of courthouse lawn, on Thursdays from 2– 7 pm starting May10th and running through end of October.  Port Sanilac Farmers’ Market is open Fridays 3-7pm (May 25-Oct.12) and Saturdays 12-4pm (June 16-Sept. 8), www.portsanilac.net. The people are friendly and growers will be happy to share their farming experiences with you. Ask them how they grow their products and what steps they take to ensure the best produce for you. Inquire about the best way to store your purchase or even if they have a favorite recipe they can share. For canners and freezers there is no better resource than the Farmers Market.   For a unique treat, contact the Messing Menagerie Farm. The Messing’s specialize in naturally raised cattle and organic vegetable gardening. Available for purchase are beef, pork, and goat, as well as a variety of vegetables in season. For more information, call 810-622-8920.   A short distance north of Lexington is Moellers Apple Orchard located at 6927 Aitken Road 810-359-7071. During the season stop by to pick up fresh apples or pick your own. It’s a great way to spend the day with friends and family, simply getting outdoors to enjoy the fresh Lake Huron air!   The baker or sweet tooth in you will want to visit Country View Bulk Foods. Located at 177 N. Germania Road, Snover, Michigan (countryviewbulkfoods.com), just off M-46. Bulk flours, sugars, baking supplies, spices, baked goods, as well as local fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, grains and dairy products are available in conventional or organic form. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, just ask. They will happily contact a local producer to supply your needs.   Come and experience a truly exceptional agricultural county!

Area Fairs & Festivals There’s something for all members of the family to enjoy at Sanilac County’s many fairs and festivals! Starting in June, there’s the Thumb Area Soybean Festival in Brown City taking place from June 8-10, complete with a street fair and spectacular fireworks! Next up is the Sandusky Thumb Festival scheduled for June 21-24, with its outdoor Arts and Craft Show, Music on the Courthouse Lawn series, and parade on Sunday, June 24! Lively activities continue in July. 4th of July is a great way to kick off mid-summer activities! Forget the crowds of the city: come and experience breathtaking fireworks while lying on the beach in Lexington on June 30 or Port Sanilac on July 7. Both towns have their parades on June 30. Watch Lexington’s parade at 11 a.m., and then drive up scenic M-25 to watch Port Sanilac’s at Noon! July 20-22 are Marlette’s days to shine with the Marlette Country Fair Days celebrating life in a farming community. You won’t believe the creatively decorated hay bales lining the streets of downtown! Or for something different, visit Croswell on the same weekend, during their Croswell Swinging Bridge Festival. Walk the famous “Mother-in-law” Swinging Bridge or cheer on your favorite team during the hilarious Cardboard Boat Races. To close out the month on July 28 and 29, Port Sanilac Festival includes The Eastports Classic Car Show, A Kite Festival featuring 40 kites choreographed to music, Caribbean Blue (the premier Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band) concert at Harbor Park, and other family activities at the Harbor.

In many regions, the arrival of August might mean that summer is winding down. However, there’s no lack of activity in Sanilac County. The popular Croswell Fair kicks off the month on August 1-4. With a carnival, rodeo, Night of Destruction Derby and Mud Drags, it’s one Fair you won’t want to miss! While in the area, spend some time at the Lexington Fine Arts Street Fair on August 4 and 5. This Art Fair boasts beautiful and unique creations lining the main street in Lexington, rivaling any of the other Art Fairs in Michigan! On the same weekend, a few miles north of Croswell, Deckerville welcomes you to their Homecoming Festival on August 3, 4, and 5 . You don’t have to be a native of this quaint village to attend their enjoyable homecoming; but after you come into contact with Deckerville’s hometown hospitality, you’ll feel like you are! Why don’t you plan to spend the entire weekend in Sanilac County, enjoying wholesome, family friendly activities? For a unique experience, you’ll want to make sure and visit the Antique Boat Show taking place August 10 and 11 in Port Sanilac. Dozens of beautifully restored, classic boats will be on display in the picturesque harbor. While you’re there, grab your fishing pole, try your luck at catching some tasty Lake Huron perch, and grill your catch for supper at the Port Sanilac Harbor Park! August 19-25 brings the Sanilac County 4-H Fair, one of the bestattended county fairs in the state. Its exciting carnival, huge number of 4-H farm animal exhibits and thrilling grandstand events is an event you won’t want to miss! You’ll appreciate the fairgrounds’ safe, clean, paved walkways and its friendly, rural atmosphere. Bring your family to an event that celebrates tradition and country style living! And, just when you might think that Sanilac is only about the outdoors and rural country living, experience Thumbfest, scheduled for September 1 in beautiful downtown Lexington. This free event showcases folk music, jam sessions, and clinics for the entire family! The renowned Lexington Bach Festival is slated for September 14-16. This celebration of classical orchestral and choral music has been acclaimed on public TV as well as by reviewers from many newspapers from around the state! Fans of Bach and other classical composers, will be impressed by the talent of the participating US and Canadian musicians. Come on Friday and stay through the weekend to attend all 3 concerts. Then come back the next weekend for Lexington Days, starting on Friday, September 22 with Outhouse Races, and continuing with a Craft Show on Saturday and Sunday, and Classic Car Show on Sunday. Not to be outdone by urban areas throughout the USA, Sandusky hosts both a Miss Sanilac Outstanding Teen Pageant on November 11; and a Miss Sanilac County Scholarship Pageant on November 25. Part of the Miss American Pageant series, these events showcase some of the brightest and best young women of Sanilac County! What better way to start the Christmas season than to attend “Michigan’s Original” Country Lighted Farm Implement Parade Weekend on December 1 and 2 in Sandusky! The parade, consisting of a wide variety of floats and brightly lit farm implement vehicles, takes place at 7 p.m. on December 1, and the entire town celebrates with family activities and events right through the weekend. This is the ultimate way to experience rural life at its best! To top off the Christmas season the Lexington Christmas Horse Parade will happen on Saturday, December 8. Come and enjoy a celebration of Christmases from the past when horses were our main form of transportation. The sight of these fine animals will impress both young and old.

No entertainment is as simple, inexpensive, and memorable as taking your family on a road trip. We invite you to visit Sanilac County and experience all we have to offer in every season of the year. In the spring, begin with a breath taking cruise on M-25 along Lake Huron. Bring a picnic to enjoy at Lexington Park. Walk on the beach, collect shells and stones, listen to the gentle lapping of the waves, watch massive cargo ships slip quietly by, and savor the scenery. Depending on how early you’re visiting in the spring, icebergs may be drifting and melting offshore: a perfect photographic opportunity. The summer months offer many of the same pleasures as spring. Picnics, family rides, hiking, swimming, boating, spectacular views of the lake, fishing and hunting are all available in Sanilac County. Many local campgrounds offer a rustic place to stay and have cabins for the frontiersman in you. If your pleasure is simply sitting around the fire to visit with friends and neighbors, this is the place to be! Motels are located in Sandusky for those of us wanting to enjoy a more traditional comfort; and many Sanilac County communities offer Bed and Breakfast accommodations, for a homey, natural experience.   Take time to appreciate the farmers as they work fields and plant crops; and take advantage of the fact that Sanilac County ranks #1 in Michigan for the production of many agricultural commodities. A great way to see the fields is to drive the country roads on an Off Road Vehicle (ORV)! A new ORV Ordinance in Sanilac County allows the maintained portion of most county roads to be used for ORV and ATV traffic.   Because this is an agricultural county, you can find great variety, quality, and deals at the Farmers Markets in Port Sanilac and Sandusky. Treat yourself to fresh picked fruits, vegetables, flowers, and many other farm commodities produced by local growers. Or stop at any of the many roadside stands scattered throughout the county.   The trees are alive with color in the fall. Miles of intense color are there for your pleasure. A gorgeous view can be found around every turn and in the next mile: truly nature at its finest. The farmers are harvesting their fields; and this is a sight not to be missed. The massive machines devour grain by the truckload. Fishing peaks again in the fall with runs of trout and salmon. And, if you enjoy deer hunting, this is the place to be!   Winter is exceptional in Sanilac County, with groomed snowmobile trails, hockey for all ages, cross-country skiing, rabbit hunting, and photographic opportunities available, to name just a few. Many Sanilac County communities offer family friendly winter festivals, starting in December and lasting all season.   So, no matter the season, come and enjoy the beauty and hospitality Sanilac County has to offer!
