TIME TO LEARN THE OTHER 3 ‘R’s...

Rest... Relax... Rejuvenate...

Welcome to Sanilac County, located in the Thumb of Michigan on the west shore of Lake Huron, less than a two hour drive from several of Michigan’s main metropolitan areas: Detroit, Saginaw, Bay City, Midland, Flint and Lansing; and less than an hour drive from Ontario by way of the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron. Take advantage of over 40 miles of breathtaking Lake Huron shoreline, offering ample opportunity for a variety of water sports, from swimming and skiing to boating and fishing. Explore the Sanilac County Underwater Preserve, comprised of 163 square miles of protected lake bottom containing numerous shipwrecks dating back as far as 1864, making it an adventure for divers. Stroll through shoreline resort villages such as Forestville, Lexington and Port Sanilac which offer unique shopping, dining, cultural and entertainment experiences. Visit the inland towns of Brown City, Carsonville, Croswell, Deckerville, Marlette, Peck and Sandusky where the tradition, friendliness and safety of small-town rural America combine with such amenities as one of the last remaining classic drive-in theaters in the state of Michigan, a state of the art indoor movie theater, lodging, fine and casual dining, shopping, festivals and fairs. Delight in Amish hospitality, culinary skills and woodworking craftsmanship at roadside stands dotted throughout the countryside, while observing a lifestyle of tradition and simplicity. Learn about Native American history at the Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic State Park, the only remaining ancient rock-carved petroglyph site in Michigan. And, above all, revel in the greatest splendor that Sanilac County has to offer: peaceful tranquility in a pristine natural environment!

“Sharing a Community... And a Commitment”

Croswell is an excellent example of Thumb Area living: friendly people of the present who take great pride in their past. Croswell is home to a locally famous swinging footbridge built in 1905 over the Black River, which bisects the city on its way to Port Huron and the Great Lake. A folksy sign at the east end of the suspension bridge advises pedestrians to “Be Good To Your Motherin-Law.” A splash pad is also at the same park to cool you down on the hot summer days. The city itself is dotted with pre-Civil War homes and buildings. Lumbering dominated Croswell until the Great Thumb Fire of 1881. Since then, agriculture has been the dominant economic activity, especially sugar beets, symbolized by the city’s iconic Pioneer Sugar plant. The annual Croswell Fair is in June this year and features livestock exhibits and a midway full of rides. The Swinging Bridge Festival in July celebrates the upcoming harvest with a Cardboard Regatta on the Black River. See ad on page 6. Croswell Community & Events: cityofcroswell.com

Deckerville M

Deckerville takes its name from Charles Decker, who launched a lumber business here in 1870. Decker’s son, Martin, became the settlement’s first postmaster that same year. Deckerville incorporated as a village in 1893 and to this day is home to a number of Charles’ descendents. Just off the beaten path, 10 minutes from M-25, escape your everyday life by finding the small community of Deckerville. Come visit our small, friendly village and explore our shops, enjoy our parks, visit our museum & library and attend our festivals. We’re sure you’ll love it as much as we do! Don’t forget about our Santa’s Reindeer Event in December and take time to roll a few balls at the local bowling alley. Good things are happening in Deckerville; come join us and see! Like us on Facebook to keep up on events! Deckerville Community: deckerville.us Deckerville Events: facebook.com/pages/DeckervilleDCDC/220847124602405?fref=nf

Marlette M

Marlette, located in the heart of Michigan’s Thumb, was first settled in the mid-1800’s by Canadians lured by the tall timber and fertile soil of the area. The lumber industry gave way to farming after the Great Thumb Fire of 1881, with sugar beets, soybeans and corn dominating production today. One of the biggest employers in the area is Marlette Regional Hospital. A large Amish community gives the countryside around Marlette the aura of a bygone era, complete with horse-drawn buggies and outlets selling produce, furniture and baked goods. The friendly city offers several recreational options, including a challenging nine-hole public golf course, a community swimming pool, various agri-tourism opportunities and a playground. Visitors to Marlette may stroll the small-town shopping district and enjoy a casual meal far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. See ad page 12. Marlette Community & Events: cityofmarlette.com

Lexington M

When Lexington was founded in 1835, it became the first outpost north of Port Huron. Eleven years later, Reuben Diamond named the village after the Battle of Lexington, in which his wife’s cousin, Ethan Allen, fought during the Revolutionary War. The Cadillac Hotel has stood at the heart of village life since its days as a log hotel from 1840 to 1860, when it was rebuilt following a fire. Steamships and freighters made regular stops at the port of Lexington for lumber and agricultural products until the Great Storm of 1913 destroyed the village’s long dock into Lake Huron. Lexington is now noted for its many Victorian homes, historic buildings filled with shops, restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts. With its handful of pretty parks and its quaint downtown, the village is the summertime host of the Music in the Park Series, ThumbFest, the Lexington Art Fair and the annual Bach Festival. Protected by a limestone seawall, Lexington’s picturesque marina doubles as an official State of Michigan Harbor of Refuge. Its beach offers visitors a chance to kick back and enjoy the summer. Nearby golf courses, a bike trail to Croswell, seasonal hunting spots, abundant fishing and a thriving cottage culture make Lexington a vacation mini-mecca. Port Sanilac M

Sandusky M

Sandusky, located 15 miles inland from Port Sanilac at the intersection of M-46 and M-19, is the county seat of Sanilac County. Sandusky offers all the services and resources you’d expect from a much larger city: topnotch medical care, a variety of shopping opportunities, lodging, dining, up-to-date library, excellent law enforcement, emergency services and more. Farming and industry combine to make Sandusky an honest, hard working, progressive and safe community. Sandusky has many recreational opportunities and is a beehive of activity. It is home to the annual Michigan Thumb Festival the last weekend in June, the Sanilac County 4-H Fair in August and popular Original Country Christmas Lighted Farm Implement Parade the first weekend of December. Sandusky boasts the only tri-plex movie theater in the county as well as a bowling alley, basketball courts, fully handicap accessible playground in its city park and a public golf course. In the surrounding area, the farmland provides ample hunting opportunities throughout the year as well as many miles of snowmobile trails. See ad page 10. Applegate, Argyle, Melvin, Minden City, Forester, Forestville, Peck, Snover

Scattered throughout Sanilac County are several smaller communities, each with its own history and each with its unique attractions. A bar in Applegate serves up some of the best pizza in the county. In Peck, you can find a hardware store straight out of the 1950’s as well as the Sanilac Career Center & Intermediate School District just north of town. With each community having their own identity, all of them still share the small-town friendliness and helpfulness that are common throughout Sanilac County. Sanilac County: sanilaccounty.org

We have transient and seasonal dockage. DNR Reservations accepted. Fuel (gas, diesel), pump out service, water, 30 & 50 amp available at all docks. The main building contains a comfort station with bathrooms & showers. The club room portion has TV & Wi-Fi. Grills under a Gazebo at the Harbor turn-around. Kayak & paddle boards available for rent. Beach & Town is walking distance to all restaurants & stores. Come enjoy a great place to visit!

A great way to ensure you have everything you need on board is to visit the US Coast Guard at a free Vessel Safety Check (VSC) location. One such location is at the Port Sanilac Marina on July 3 from Noon to 4 p.m. Before you go for your free vessel check, you can review the requirements by going to http://goo.gl/ mWFdQ9 and download the checklist. This is a great tool to ensure you have all the proper equipment & paperwork on board and get a head start before launch. Let’s run through a few items you’ll be checking: Personal Flotation Devices (PFD): Every passenger on the boat is required to have a PFD in good, serviceable condition that is a suitable size. Boats 16 feet or longer must also have a throwable device that has to be ‘immediately available’. Many boaters store lifejackets in a compartment but it is good practice that once on board the boat, you check over the life jackets, secure children immediately, and secure the adult jackets (if not being worn) to a line for easy access in case of emergency. Visual Distress Signals: On the Great Lakes, recreational boats at least 16 feet long must be equipped with a minimum of either a three day and three night pyrotechnic device or a one day nonpyrotechnic device such as a flag and a one night device such as an SOS light. For boats shorter than 16 feet, only a night visual distress signal is required when operating the boat after dark. Fire Extinguishers: Recreational boats less than 26 feet and propelled by outboard motors are not required to have fire extinguishers, but it’s a good rule of thumb to always carry one on board. Extinguishers are required if one or more of the following conditions exists. 1: The boat has an inboard engine, 2: When double-bottom hulls are not completely sealed or not completely filled with flotation materials, 3: If there is a closed living space, 4: If the boat has compartments containing flammable materials, 5: If the boat has a permanently installed fuel tank. Sound Producing Devices: All boats must carry a device (whistle, horn, siren, etc.) capable of a 4-second blast audible for half a mile. Boats larger than 39 feet are also required to have a bell.

Port Sanilac Marina M 7365 Cedar Street, Port Sanilac, MI 48469 810-622-9651, portsanilacmarina.com Full service deep water Lake Huron marina, located in Port Sanilac Harbor. Offering new & used boat sales, dockage, outside storage, inside heated storage and service. We carry Catalina Yachts, Marlow-Hunter Marine, & J Boats watercraft. Main building also contains First Mate Ice Cream Store in lower level as well as Uri’s Landing - Waterfront Dining overlooking the harbor. See ad on back cover.

When packing up the boat for a day out on the water, it’s important to inventory the items you have on board before setting out. We’re not talking about just the sunscreen and well stocked cooler (although nothing beats First Mate’s hand dipped Michigan Pot Hole ice cream in a homemade waffle cone!). We’re talking about safety devices that are must haves on the boat.

“Since 2006, the Sanilac Tourism Association (STA) has been ‘working together for our community’,” states STA Chairperson, Tammy Williford, Marketing Director of Eastern Michigan Bank. “We started with a group of individuals who saw a need for a countywide tourism initiative. From day one, our mission has been to enhance economic vitality by marketing the county as a destination, and to foster relationships with community partners to ensure a quality guest experience. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are proud to say that we have stayed true to that mission!” When the all-volunteer board was formed, care was taken to assure that representatives from throughout the county were involved and that the individuals holding the seats came primarily from businesses and organizations directly affected by tourism. These individuals have donated thousands of hours to implement a variety of initiatives intended to enhance tourism in Sanilac County. It is important to note that the STA has not received any government funding; all projects have been funded through advertising dollars or membership fees. The flagship project of the STA has been its annual publication of a full color Sanilac County Visitor’s

Guide distributed both locally and throughout the state of Michigan to entice visitors to come to Sanilac County to enjoy its picturesque rural landscape and beautiful Lake Huron shoreline. In addition to the Guide, members of the group have also taken on a number of ventures to increase tourism traffic in Sanilac County. These include creating a tourism website: www.sanilaccounty.org, hosting a FAM Tour in the county, recruiting the Great Getaways film crew to feature Sanilac County on its television show for Detroit Public Television, producing brochures for the Sanilac County Park system, and joining the Tip of Thumb Heritage Water Trail, to name just a few. “In the future, we plan to explore the feasibility of developing “day trip” packages, promoting recreational opportunities in the area, enhancing our internet presence through social media, and offering tourism-enhancement trainings to our local businesses,” shares Williford. “We are proud of our accomplishments to date and look forward to continuing to promote Sanilac County tourism in the coming years!” If you are interested in more information about Sanilac County or finding out how you can be a part of the STA projects, please visit www.sanilaccounty.org or email travel@sanilaccounty.org.

About Beers & Brewing Ahhh, there’s nothing like a cold beer on a hot  summer day! But, do you know the history and makeup of that satisfying ale you have in your hand? Probably not. The oldest written documentation regarding beer making can be traced back 6,000 years to ancient Samaria in the Middle East. By the year 2000 BC, ancient Babylonians were being given a daily ration of over 20 beers, which were originally brewed using herbs such as yarrow, mugwort and rosemary. It wasn’t until about the year 1150 AD that hops were  used in the commercial brewing process documented to be taking place in Northern Germany.   Soon, England became involved in growing hops and producing beer. The English love their beer the hoppier the better. The hop flower gives beer its flavor, aroma, head retention and bitterness. In fact, because of hops’ natural preservation properties,   English extra-hopped unrefrigerated ale being shipped into occupied India, resulting in a variety of beer that’s popular today: Indian Pale Ale, commonly  referred to as IPA. Hops grow best in sandy loam, which is a nutrientladen soil abundantly available in Sanilac County. Hops grow vertically, up string, anchored between  the ground and an enormous pergola superstructure intended to hold the hefty weight of the plants. At peak, hops can grow 6-8 inches a day twining  themselves clockwise around the string, following the path of the sun.  Hops are usually harvested in  late August and early September, depending on the  season and the variety of hops. There are over 85 varieties of hops, with about nine varieties being grown in Sanilac County.

Wines,

America has had a long relationship with beer. In  1867, the art of crafting beer was truly advanced with an estimated 4131 breweries open, producing 9 million barrels (31 gallons in a barrel) a year. However, after Prohibition (which was in effect  from 1920 to 1933), only 756 breweries were still in operation, and by 1973, there were only about 100 left standing nationwide. Beer flavors in America have changed significantly  over the years.  During World War II, because of food  shortages, brewers were forced to brew lighter beers that contained less grain, and to use cheaper ingredients such as corn and rice. These lighter, highly carbonated, waterier beers, known as pilsners, have become the core of today’s commercial  beer industry. The micro-breweries of today, such as Elk Street Brewery in Sandusky, seek to return to the grass roots efforts of original brewing through purity, creativity, artisanship and pride, using only water, hops, malted barley and/or wheat and yeast in their production process. This results in a full-bodied, robust drink that not only quenches your thirst, but also leaves you satisfied, happy and fulfilled. So, drink up, but remember to…drink responsibly!
