Croswell
Founded in 1881, the city of Brown City is a full service community, offering a variety of businesses and professional services. We host the annual Thumb Soybean Festival the second weekend in June. Event highlights include a carnival, classic car show, music and fireworks. Enjoy our beautiful 76+ acre community park, filled with ball diamonds, picnic facilities, playgrounds and soccer fields. To see us, take M-90 which travels through the city. The road through town is also known as Main Street. See ad page 13. Brown City Community: http://www.ci.brown-city.mi.us/
Croswell is an excellent example of Thumb Area living: friendly people of the present who take great pride in their past. Croswell is home to a locally famous swinging footbridge built in 1905 over the Black River, which bisects the city on its way to Port Huron and the Great Lake. A folksy sign at the east end of the suspension bridge advises pedestrians to “Be Good To Your Mother-in-Law.” New in 2013, a “splash pad” has been added at the same park to cool you down on the hot summer days. The city itself is dotted with pre-Civil War homes and buildings. Lumbering dominated Croswell until the Great Thumb Fire of 1881. Since then, agriculture has been the dominant economic activity, especially sugar beets, symbolized by the city’s iconic Pioneer Sugar plant. The annual Croswell Fair is in June this year and features livestock exhibits and a midway full of rides. The Swinging Bridge Festival in July celebrates the upcoming harvest with a Cardboard Regatta on the Black River. See ad on page 6. Croswell Community & Events: http://www.cityofcroswell.com/
Carsonville “Where family and friends matter”... The charm of a small town, and the atmosphere of family & friends. Carsonville was founded in 1853 by Silas Hall and was known as Hall’s corners until 1884 when businessman Arthur Carson renamed the settlement. Local events include TTPA tractor pull, Antique tractor pull & MMA cage fighting event, New Years Fireworks and more! Located on M46 between Sandusky and Port Sanilac. Stop by for a visit and make yourself at home! See ad page 13. Carsonville Community & Events: http://www.villageofcarsonville.org/

Deckerville
Marlette
Deckerville takes its name from Charles Decker, who launched a lumber business here in 1870. Decker’s son, Martin, became the settlement’s first postmaster that same year. Deckerville incorporated as a village in 1893 and to this day is home to a number of Charles’ descendents. Located just 6 miles from the Lake Huron shoreline, Deckerville has several shops and restaurants, as well as a full-service hospital and library available for campers and resorters. During the summertime, visitors can take a dip in the village’s outdoor pool or roll a few balls at the local bowling alley. In August, past and present villagers gather for the Deckerville Homecoming festival, which features a tractor pull, parade, fireworks and many more activities. Don’t forget about their Santa’s Reindeer Event in December. Come celebrate the change of seasons in Deckerville! Deckerville Community Community & Events: http://www.deckervilledcdc.com/
Marlette, located in the heart of Michigan’s Thumb, was first settled in the mid-1800’s by Canadians lured by the tall timber and fertile soil of the area. The lumber industry gave way to farming after the Great Thumb Fire of 1881, with sugar beets, soy beans and corn dominating production today. A large Amish community gives the countryside around Marlette the aura of a bygone era, complete with horse-drawn buggies and outlets selling produce, furniture and baked goods. The friendly city offers a handful of recreational options, including a challenging nine-hole public golf course, a community swimming pool, various agri-tourism opportunities and a playground. One of the biggest employers in the area is Marlette Regional Hospital. Visitors to Marlette may stay in a bed-and-breakfast, stroll the small-town shopping district and enjoy a casual meal far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. See ad page 12. Marlette Community & Events: http://www.cityofmarlette.com/
Lexington
8
When Lexington was founded in 1835, it became the first outpost north of Port Huron. Eleven years later, Reuben Diamond named the village after the Battle of Lexington, in which his wife’s cousin, Ethan Allen, fought during the Revolutionary War. The Cadillac Hotel has stood at the heart of village life since its days as a log hotel from 1840 to 1860, when it was rebuilt following a fire. Steamships and freighters made regular stops at the port of Lexington for lumber and agricultural products until the Great Storm of 1913 destroyed the village’s long dock into Lake Huron. Lexington is now noted for its many Victorian homes and historic buildings filled with shops, restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts. With its handful of pretty parks and its quaint downtown, the village is the summertime host of the Music in the Park Series, ThumbFest, the Lexington Art Fair and the annual Bach Festival. Protected by a limestone seawall, Lexington’s picturesque marina doubles as an official State of Michigan Harbor of Refuge. Its beach offers visitors a chance to kick back and enjoy the summer. Nearby golf courses, a bike trail to Croswell, seasonal hunting spots, abundant fishing and a thriving cottage culture make Lexington a vacation mini-mecca. Port Sanilac
Come Summer With Us In Port Sanilac! Let Port Sanilac be your Michigan vacation destination. In the heart of the East Ports, Port Sanilac is a great place to bask in the sun, swim, sail, boat, fish, dive, backpack, golf, or camp out along the lake; making it like no other place else in Michigan.
Driving to Port Sanilac, you have two routes you can take. One route takes you on a scenic drive along Lake Huron through several small towns along M-25. The other route takes you through several small towns primarily viewing the beautiful and peaceful countryside all the way, via M-46. Once in Port Sanilac, the scenery includes miles of sandy beach, restaurants that offer a variety of food and drink, places to stay including campsites, and cabins for rent located right on the beach. There are a variety of places to stay in and near Port Sanilac. Most have a short walk to the beach… some are equipped with a swimming pool, kitchen, satellite TV, Internet, airconditioning, screened-in porches, on-site laundry facilities. They are also kept very clean and well maintained. The downtown area has a lot of great things going on, and charm. While walking down main street you can catch a few whiffs of some great smelling food from the nearby restaurants. Some restaurants include The Stone Lodge & The Van Camp House.
Sandusky, located 15 miles inland from Port Sanilac at the intersection of M-46 and M-19, is the county seat of Sanilac County. Sandusky offers all the services and resources you’d expect from a much larger city: top-notch medical care, a variety of shopping opportunities, lodging, dining, up-to-date library, excellent law enforcement, emergency services and more. Farming and industry combine to make Sandusky an honest, hard working, progressive and safe community. Sandusky has many recreational opportunities and is a beehive of activity. It is home to the annual Michigan Thumb Festival in June, the Sanilac County 4-H Fair in August and popular Original Country Christmas Lighted Farm Implement Parade in December. Sandusky boasts the only tri-plex movie theater in the county as well as a bowling alley, basketball courts, fully handicap accessible playground in its city park and a public golf course. In the surrounding area, the farmland provides ample hunting opportunities throughout the year as well as many miles of snowmobile trails. See ad page 10. Sandusky Community: http://www.misandusky.com/ Sandusky Chamber & Events: http://www.sanduskychamber.us/
In the summer, the weather is warm and pleasant from May to October. Come enjoy the peace and quiet of the area without having to worry about the time. Catch up on all that reading that you’ve have been neglecting and enjoy the scenery that beautiful Lake Huron offers.
Applegate, Argyle, Melvin, Minden City, Forester, Forestville, Peck, Snover
We hope that you make Port Sanilac a part of your upcoming plans… enjoy your stay… and then please come back again. You might even consider making The Village of Port Sanilac your permanent home.
Scattered throughout Sanilac County are several smaller communities, each with its own history and each with its unique attractions. A bar in Applegate serves up some of the best pizza in the county. In Peck, you can find a hardware store straight out of the 1950’s as well as a Career Center just north of town, the Sanilac Intermediate School District. With each community having their own identity, all of them still share the small-town friendliness and helpfulness that are common throughout Sanilac County.

Sanilac County – Agri - Tourism
Michigan Wind 2 is proud to call Sanilac County home.
©2013 Exelon Generation Company, LLC
www.exeloncorp.com/wind
Sanilac County boasts more than just a shoreline; it is full of agricultural tourism opportunities as well. Contrary to many people’s impression of farming as a simple operation, modern agriculture is a high tech business which uses massive equipment. Drive down Sanilac County roads during the spring planting or fall harvest seasons and be amazed at farm machinery in the fields that can be 20-30 feet wide and 20 feet high. These huge tractors, combines, sprayers, planters and pickers are working to produce the food you have on your dining room table.
The Sanilac County countryside is also following a national trend of “windmill planting”. Drive to the north side of the county on Ruth Road near Deckerville, and be awed by the newly erected wind turbines’ slowly moving arms turning in the breeze. These are truly a sight to behold. And, in the fall, put the hustle and bustle of the city behind you; pick your way through our corn mazes, pumpkin patches and apple orchards with your family on a crisp, clear day; breathe in the fresh, bright air that can be found only along country roads; and treat your eyes to the beauty of rolling hills and cattle grazing in the distance. Let Sanilac County seep into your pores and quiet your heart. For a few moments, a few hours, or a few days, come share with us the splendor of rural living.

Sailing Whether your sailboat is your “cottage on the lake” or your “one design racer”, sailing has been rooted in Port Sanilac since the harbor was built in 1951. With the addition of a second Harbor of Refuge located in Lexington in 1975, sailing has become a popular recreation activity for vacationing mariners and local sailors alike in Sanilac County. The Sanilac shoreline has become an excellent vantage point for viewing the legendary Port Huron to Mackinaw Yacht Race. This race, held in July each summer, has become more of a spectator sport than ever. The new race course has the 300 boat fleet hugging the shoreline. The spectacular scene of colorful spinnakers contrasted against the deep blue waters of Lake Huron are a sight that postcards and vacation memories are made of. Local Port Huron Racing Federation (PHRF) boat racing is held from late May through late September. The Bark Shanty Sail Club hosts these races along with an annual Lake Huron Yachting Association regatta.
Fishing With the ice breakup in late March comes the excitement of early spring fishing. The water is still cold and it gives the angler an advantage for finding trout, salmon or steelhead. The fish seek the warm water of the stream runoff and are close to shore. Shallow water fishing is most productive. Most fishing tournaments are run in May and early June. As the water warms, the big fish go deep and offshore. By late June the perch start coming in. Perch populations have grown in recent years. The DNR reports that the Sanilac area has been an anomaly for perch count. Perch fishing in the past couple of years has stayed strong right into the fall when the salmon and trout run. The fall months bring the spawning season. Brown trout are frequently caught near streams and harbor entrances. In September and October of 2008, the DNR expanded their fish plantings out of Port Sanilac. A fish count completed at that time showed a good cross section of species in the twenty to forty foot depth contour.

Diving Since the shipwreck discovery of the steamer “Regina” in the 1980’s, recreational diving has exploded along the Sanilac shoreline. There are over 14 different wrecks within an hour of Port Sanilac or Lexington. Water clarity has dramatically increased in Lake Huron over the past 15 years. It is not uncommon to hear reports of 75 foot visibility. Deep and shallow water dives are equally rewarding. With all the interest generated by the many wrecks of the Great Storm of 1913, the Sanilac Underwater Preserve was formed to protect these wrecks from treasure hunters and salvagers. Commercial dive charters operate out of both Lexington and Port Sanilac Harbors. Compressed air and dive supplies are available in Port Sanilac. Several Detroit metropolitan area dive shops organize dive trips to the Thumb area.
Kayaking Kayaking along the shores of Lake Huron is gaining in popularity. The clean, clear water; the calm, soothing action of the waves; and the beauty of the shoreline all combine to give the novice or experienced kayaker a refreshing experience. Take the opportunity to explore isolated beaches easily accessible from the water. Now with the introduction of the Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail linking Saginaw Bay, around Lake Huron through the southern tip of Sanilac County, distances between landings can be as little as a mile or less. Visit thumbtrails.com for more info. See map, page 25.

Sanilac County – A Birds Eye View Sanilac County is a great place to view a large variety of birds. From its lakeshores to the farmlands, from cities, towns, and villages to state and county parks, Sanilac County has a wide range of habitat for wildlife. The majestic bald eagle as well as the tiny hummingbird can be seen in all parts of our county. Rivers, streams and ponds are breeding grounds for wildlife that is pleasing to the eye and comforting to the soul.
www.sanilaccounty.org
Sightings of the snowy owl, normally making its home in northern Canada and Alaska, increased throughout Sanilac County this last winter. This beautiful bird is one of the largest species of owls, with a wingspan up to almost five feet. No one is sure why they made their way to our county this year, but we’re glad they did! Bald eagle sightings have been quite common throughout Sanilac County in the past few years, and it is a treat to see such a majestic bird in our area. Sightings have been from along our lakeshore to inland areas around the county. The national bird of the United States of America, bald eagle nests are the largest of any North American bird. Typical wingspans of the bald eagle can range from 5 feet 9 inches to 7 feet 5 inches. No wonder they need a big nest! Water fowl is also abundant in the county as our lakeshore, streams and ponds provide a rest area for migrating birds. Many geese, ducks, and swans can be seen in these areas, along with cranes and blue herons.

The Minden Bog, located in northern Sanilac County, is part of the Minden City State Game Area that covers about 5,000 acres. The bog is home to a large variety of birds, including the ruffled grouse, woodcock, and hawks. Walkable nature trails in our county parks allow a perfect way to exercise and bird watch at the same time. Sanilac County has four parks, three of which have excellent nature trails: Delaware Park is 14 miles north of Port Sanilac on M25; Forester Park is just 6.5 miles north of Port Sanilac on M25; and Evergreen Park is 9 miles north of M-46 on M-53. Campgrounds and local parks also add to the variety of trails and walking paths available for nature enthusiasts. So if you’re looking for a relaxing time, come to Sanilac County, where you can take time out of your busy schedule to enjoy nature. You’ll be glad you did!

Sanilac County – Wineries The growing wine industry is blooming in Sanilac County and the thumb area, offering a wide selection of wines to tempt every taste bud! From wine tasting rooms with live music and food to down-on-thefarm charm, our wineries have a lot to offer! Take a drive and visit the vineyards, and learn the art of winemaking for yourself. Many varieties of wine throughout the thumb feature fruit such as pears, apples, and blackberries, to name only a few. Of course, classic wine from grapes such as the Concorde and Chardonnay are plentiful; and there are even Gold medal wines available from winemakers right here in the thumb! Starting from the south and working our way north, first we find Vinomondo Winery located at 4505 Lakeshore Rd in Fort Gratiot near Birchwood Mall. In addition to making their own wines, they have a gift store and wine making supplies. The next stop is Shady Shores Winery located at 5697 Harris Rd in Jeddo housed inside McCallum’s Orchard Market, featuring fruit wines and Concorde grape wines.
Our next stop is downtown Lexington. The Lexington Brewing Company and Wine House is open yearround and features wine tasting, food and entertainment. Their second location is the Blue Water Winery and Vineyard located at 7131 Halverson Rd south of Port Sanilac. On-site wine tasting in season is available at this location as well as some unique events including an opportunity to help harvest the grapes in the fall! The final stop on our winery list is the Dizzy Daisy Winery located in Huron County at 1288 Crown Rd. in Bad Axe. Featuring on site wine tasting year round, Dizzy Daisy has been producing wines since 2006, with over 40 delicious varieties. All of our wineries have their own special flavor, but they all share two things in common: pride in their craftsmanship and joy of sharing conversation with visitors, so enjoy and drive safely!

Whether you’re a history buff or not, the Sanilac County Historical Village & Museum located at 228 S. Ridge Street in Port Sanilac has much to offer, with more than 10 historic buildings that take you back to early days when a shave meant a straight razor, and a pound of butter was about 40 cents. As you wander through the historic village, the time travel takes you to log cabins, a one room school house, turn of the century general store and a historic church that is still in use for special occasions. Don’t forget to visit the carriage barn and the dairy museum, which are just a stone’s throw away from the well-preserved train depot, blacksmith shop and hearse shed. The centerpiece of the museum’s 10 acre grounds is the Dr. Joseph Loop Mansion. The mansion is furnished in the 19th century period with many of the accoutrements original to the Loop-Harrison family. The first two floors are open for tours. Permanent collections include marine shipwreck items, military memorabilia, and Native American artifacts. A visit to Sanilac County in the summer wouldn’t be complete without taking in a play at the popular Barn Theatre located on the museum grounds. The Barn Theatre is managed by a local company which leases the building from the museum and produces full length plays featuring area actors. Like most things in Sanilac County, The Barn is a ‘come as you are’ kind of theater; the dress code is comfortable, and the entertainment is great! Museums in other parts of the county include the Marlette Historical Depot Museum located at 3325 S. Main Street, in Marlette, and the Deckerville Museum located at the Historical Village & Museum located at 228 S. Ridge Street in Port Sanilac. Both are open by appointment only. There’s even a tractor museum for farm equipment enthusiasts. The Sanilac County IH Museum is located at 560 N.Goetze Road in Carsonville, and features International Harvester Collection tractors, trucks, toys, parts and advertising memorabilia. Let us assure you, if you’re interested in history, Sanilac County is the place to be!
