FOUR SEASONS OF FAMILY FUN
Season to Season AUTUMN With lavish brushstrokes of gold and crimson, Autumn arrives and the scenic byways of Iosco County take center stage. This is a perfect time to visit Lumberman’s Monument, take a hike, ride ORV trails, or simply enjoy the rivers and wildlife unique to Northeast Michigan. Watch Great Lakes freighters on their final voyages of the season, or take a trip aboard the River Queen paddleboat to witness the magnificent reflection of Autumn foliage on the historic Au Sable River.
WINTER Wrapped in a blanket of white, the Tawases become a playground of Winter activities. Wildlife endures with us during Old Man Winter’s glory days. With miles of groomed cross-country ski and snowmobile trails, frozen lakes for fishing, a snowbox derby and Perchville (Michigan’s oldest winter carnival), there is always something to help keep you warm and entertained here.
5
River Road National Scenic Byway The 22-mile River Road National Scenic Byway parallels the fabled Au Sable River. The river provided a westward route into the heart of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula for Native Americans and French fur trappers, loggers and fishermen. The river also served as the main eastward artery for loggers during northern Michigan’s “white pine era,” floating huge numbers of logs downstream each spring to sawmills on the shores of Lake Huron. Today, the Au Sable River is still a major water route in this region, used by nature enthusiasts for a variety of recreational uses. Visitors enjoy views of lush upland and lowland forests, high-bank vistas, and vast watery impoundments for fishing and other recreational activities. The presence of a series of hydroelectric dams interrupt the river’s flow, while adding other aspects of interest for many. Three monuments mark the historic nature of the waterway — Canoers' Memorial, honoring those who paddled this great river; Lumberman’s Monument, a tribute to those who labored in the surrounding forests; and the Kiwanis Monument, commemorating the efforts of private citizens to reforest the state’s lands.
Iargo Springs... A stunning stop along the Scenic Byway is Iargo Springs, featuring an interpretive kiosk and a series of springs bursting from the sandy banks of the Au Sable River in the form of small waterfalls. The springs are tucked under a canopy of hemlock, pine, and maple near the river. There is a wonderful boardwalk at the springs, which are reached by descending a multitude of stairs.
Lumberman's Monument Lumberman’s Monument, erected in 1931, is a lasting memorial to the thousands of loggers and lumbermen who worked in the region during Northern Michigan’s “white pine era.” An imposing 14-foot bronze statue features three figures, each representing one aspect of lumbering operations, stands near a fantastic view of the Au Sable River. You may also walk to river level for an up-close and personal view, as well as visit the Wannigan via many, many stairs! There are seats built along the stairway (for the uphill climb, especially!) A very informative and attractive visitors’ center and gift shop is staffed from May through October, while the grounds remain open year-round.

ATTRACTIONS
Corsair Cross-Country Ski Trails Corsair Trail is one of the Midwest’s finest cross-country ski trail systems. It offers opportunities for skiers of all levels – and provides a unique opportunity to view a Michigan winter from the depths of the Huron National Forest. Over 26 miles of trails and loops flank Monument Road. There is skiing to fill a few hours or an entire weekend! The network of trails known as the Corsair Trail has three trailheads, each about seven miles northwest of East Tawas. The Corsair Picnic Area is on the west side of Monument Road; Wright’s Lake is off Tuttle Road, which is on the east side of Monument Road; and Silver Valley, also on the east side of Monument Road. There are parking areas and pit toilet facilities at each of the trailheads. Nearby must-ski trails such as the Highbanks and Eagle Run, shadow the usually ice-shrouded waters of the Au Sable River. Trailheads for the Highbanks Trail are located at Iargo Springs, the Canoers' Memorial, and Sid Town. Skiers can start their day on Eagle Run at the trailhead, three miles west of Oscoda along River Road. For more info: www.n-sport.com or www.skinordic.org

STATE DOCK
East Tawas State Dock
Visitors to the Tawases will find a safe — and breathtakingly beautiful — harbor at the East Tawas State Dock. The 140-slip marina (60 seasonal and 80 transient slips) is located on Tawas Bay. The first-class marina draws boaters from across the state. Amenities include a boat launch, new toilet/shower building, dock office, playground/park, water, electricity, garbage pick-up and recycling. There's also a swimming beach just south of the dock. But the East Tawas State Dock is more than just a marina — it has become a gathering point for local festivals and events. Its convenient and scenic location at the foot of the Newman Street Shopping District in East Tawas, is a natural draw for visitors. “There's 500 feet of dock for visitors to walk along, grab an ice cream and then enjoy the scenery on one of several benches,” said Chuck Allen, park and recreation supervisor for the Tawas Point State Park.

EDUCATION
A Commitment to Education... Iosco County's Educational Opportunities
Iosco County’s schools offer regionalized learning set in the communities they serve and, while names may indicate a “territorial” approach, the fact is that community schools cross township and even county lines to ensure a quality education at all levels. Tawas Area Schools includes one elementary school, a middle school, and a senior high school that serves nearly 1,400 students. A variety of programs are available to meet the individual needs of the students. Strong curriculums in English, mathematics, language arts, sciences, social studies, computers and technology, and physical education are supplemented by classes in the fine arts. The goal of the district is to provide each student with the tools to become a positive, healthy, and productive member of the community. Whittemore-Prescott School District encompasses parts of three counties – Iosco,
Arenac, and Ogemaw. The five schools in the district are located in or near the communities of Whittemore and Prescott. Oscoda Area Schools has added to its core curriculum by offering programs such as culinary arts, industrial arts, and dual enrollment classes. Success in this district is measured by the achievements of its students – 78 percent of high school
19
graduates attend college, 46 percent graduate with honors, an organized band and general music program extends to the sixth grade, and school buildings are fitted with the latest in technology. Hale Area Schools offers students a complete and strong curriculum exposing them to a variety of core studies and extracurricular activity. Student to staff ratios of 16.5 to one teacher are well below the state average of 18-1. The Iosco Regional Educational Service Agency (IRESA), was created to provide an alternative education outlet from students from throughout the various school districts in Iosco County. Alpena Community College has operated a full service extension center in the county since 1969. The Huron Shores Campus offers classes in the Tawases, Twining, Oscoda, and Whittemore.
INDUSTRIAL GROWTH
Tawas Area Industrial Complex The Tawas Industrial Park is a 100-acre area created to consolidate industrial development in Baldwin Township, a site that is located about three miles north of Newman Street in East Tawas. With nearly half of the available space already developed or under development and, with the exception of one 30-acre site, the Industrial Park is broken up into smaller lots ranging from 3 to 6 acres in size. Two smaller sites already have buildings on them and are ready for occupancy. The Tawas Area Industrial Park Committee (TAIPC), and the Baldwin Township Downtown Development Authority(DDA), work hand-in-hand in managing the park providing prospective developers with every aspect of assistance needed to locate a new business in the park. The DDA assists parties with utility hook-up assistance. Once the initial negotiations are complete, the TAIPC will help developers contact local funding agencies, such as the Economic Development Commission and the Economic Development Forum, to secure low-cost loans. This service and others are provided on an as-needed basis, tailoring each request and need to the specific developer, rather than offering a fixed menu of services. The park has been developed to provide a single site in which businesses can find a source of common-use services that include utilities, highway and rail transportation, and municipal infrastructure capable of serving commercial entities now — and well into the future.
