Croswell M
Founded in 1881, the city of Brown City is a full service community, offering a variety of businesses and professional services. We host the annual Thumb Soybean Festival the second weekend in June. Event highlights include a carnival, classic car show, music and fireworks. Enjoy our beautiful 76+ acre community park, filled with ball diamonds, picnic facilities, playgrounds and soccer fields. To see us, take M-90 which travels through the city. The road through town is also known as Main Street. See ad page 11. Brown City Community: ci.brown-city.mi.us
Croswell is an excellent example of Thumb Area living: friendly people of the present who take great pride in their past. Croswell is home to a locally famous swinging footbridge built in 1905 over the Black River, which bisects the city on its way to Port Huron and the Great Lake. A folksy sign at the east end of the suspension bridge advises pedestrians to “Be Good To Your Mother-in-Law.” New in 2013, a “splash pad” has been added at the same park to cool you down on the hot summer days. The city itself is dotted with pre-Civil War homes and buildings. Lumbering dominated Croswell until the Great Thumb Fire of 1881. Since then, agriculture has been the dominant economic activity, especially sugar beets, symbolized by the city’s iconic Pioneer Sugar plant. The annual Croswell Fair is in June this year and features livestock exhibits and a midway full of rides. The Swinging Bridge Festival in July celebrates the upcoming harvest with a Cardboard Regatta on the Black River. See ad on page 6. Croswell Community & Events: cityofcroswell.com
Carsonville “Where family and friends matter”... The charm of a small town, and the atmosphere of family & friends. Carsonville was founded in 1853 by Silas Hall and was known as Hall’s corners until 1884 when businessman Arthur Carson renamed the settlement. Local events include TTPA tractor pull, Antique tractor pull & MMA cage fighting event, New Years Fireworks and more! Located on M-46 between Sandusky and Port Sanilac. Stop by for a visit and make yourself at home! See ad page 11. Carsonville Community & Events: villageofcarsonville.org

Deckerville
Marlette M
Deckerville takes its name from Charles Decker, who launched a lumber business here in 1870. Decker’s son, Martin, became the settlement’s first postmaster that same year. Deckerville incorporated as a village in 1893 and to this day is home to a number of Charles’ descendents. Located just 6 miles from the Lake Huron shoreline, Deckerville has several shops and restaurants, as well as a full-service hospital and library available for campers and resorters. During the summertime, visitors enjoy time at Wilson Park; home of baseball fields, volleyball areas, playground, 2 pavilions, and picnic areas. In August, past and present villagers gather for the Deckerville Homecoming festival, which features a tractor pull, parade, fireworks and many more activities. Don’t forget about their Santa’s Reindeer Event in December and you can roll a few balls at the local bowling alley. Come celebrate the change of seasons in Deckerville! Deckerville Community: deckerville.us
Marlette, located in the heart of Michigan’s Thumb, was first settled in the mid-1800’s by Canadians lured by the tall timber and fertile soil of the area. The lumber industry gave way to farming after the Great Thumb Fire of 1881, with sugar beets, soybeans and corn dominating production today. A large Amish community gives the countryside around Marlette the aura of a bygone era, complete with horse-drawn buggies and outlets selling produce, furniture and baked goods. The friendly city offers a handful of recreational options, including a challenging nine-hole public golf course, a community swimming pool, various agri-tourism opportunities and a playground. One of the biggest employers in the area is Marlette Regional Hospital. Visitors to Marlette may stroll the small-town shopping district and enjoy a casual meal far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. See ad page 12.

Lexington
8
When Lexington was founded in 1835, it became the first outpost north of Port Huron. Eleven years later, Reuben Diamond named the village after the Battle of Lexington, in which his wife’s cousin, Ethan Allen, fought during the Revolutionary War. The Cadillac Hotel has stood at the heart of village life since its days as a log hotel from 1840 to 1860, when it was rebuilt following a fire. Steamships and freighters made regular stops at the port of Lexington for lumber and agricultural products until the Great Storm of 1913 destroyed the village’s long dock into Lake Huron. Lexington is now noted for its many Victorian homes, historic buildings filled with shops, restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts. With its handful of pretty parks and its quaint downtown, the village is the summertime host of the Music in the Park Series, ThumbFest, the Lexington Art Fair and the annual Bach Festival. Protected by a limestone seawall, Lexington’s picturesque marina doubles as an official State of Michigan Harbor of Refuge. Its beach offers visitors a chance to kick back and enjoy the summer. Nearby golf courses, a bike trail to Croswell, seasonal hunting spots, abundant fishing and a thriving cottage culture make Lexington a vacation mini-mecca. Sandusky, located 15 miles inland from Port Sanilac at the intersection of M-46 and M-19, is the county seat of Sanilac County. Sandusky offers all the services and resources you’d expect from a much larger city: top-notch medical care, a variety of shopping opportunities, lodging, dining, up-to-date library, excellent law enforcement, emergency services and more. Farming and industry combine to make Sandusky an honest, hard working, progressive and safe community. Sandusky has many recreational opportunities and is a beehive of activity. It is home to the annual Michigan Thumb Festival in June, the Sanilac County 4-H Fair in August and popular Original Country Christmas Lighted Farm Implement Parade in December. Sandusky boasts the only tri-plex movie theater in the county as well as a bowling alley, basketball courts, fully handicap accessible playground in its city park and a public golf course. In the surrounding area, the farmland provides ample hunting opportunities throughout the year as well as many miles of snowmobile trails. See ad page 10. Applegate, Argyle, Melvin, Minden City, Forester, Forestville, Peck, Snover Scattered throughout Sanilac County are several smaller communities, each with its own history and each with its unique attractions. A bar in Applegate serves up some of the best pizza in the county. In Peck, you can find a hardware store straight out of the 1950’s as well as a Career Center just north of town, the Sanilac Intermediate School District. With each community having their own identity, all of them still share the small-town friendliness and helpfulness that are common throughout Sanilac County. Sanilac County: sanilaccounty.org

Whether your sailboat is your “cottage on the lake” or your “one design racer”, sailing has been rooted in Port Sanilac since the harbor was built in 1951. With the addition of a second Harbor of Refuge located in Lexington in 1975, sailing has become a popular recreation activity for vacationing mariners and local sailors alike in Sanilac County. The Sanilac shoreline has become an excellent vantage point for viewing the legendary Port Huron to Mackinaw Yacht Race. This race, held in July each summer, has become more of a spectator sport than ever. The new race course has the 300 boat fleet hugging the shoreline. The spectacular scene of colorful spinnakers contrasted against the deep blue waters of Lake Huron are a sight that postcards and vacation memories are made of. Local Port Huron Racing Federation (PHRF) boat racing is held from late May through late September. The Bark Shanty Sail Club hosts these races along with an annual Lake Huron Yachting Association regatta.
Fishing
With the ice breakup in late March comes the excitement of early spring fishing. The water is still cold and it gives the angler an advantage for finding trout, salmon or steelhead. The fish seek the warm water of the stream runoff and are close to shore. Shallow water fishing is most productive. Most fishing tournaments are run in May and early June. As the water warms, the big fish go deep and offshore. By late June the perch start coming in. Perch populations have grown in recent years. The DNR reports that the Sanilac area has been an anomaly for perch count. Perch fishing in the past couple of years has stayed strong right into the fall when the salmon and trout run. The fall months bring the spawning season. Brown trout are frequently caught near streams and harbor entrances. In September and October of 2008, the DNR expanded their fish plantings out of Port Sanilac. A fish count completed at that time showed a good cross section of species in the twenty to forty foot depth contour.
Diving
22
Since the shipwreck discovery of the steamer “Regina” in the 1980’s, recreational diving has exploded along the Sanilac shoreline. There are over 14 different wrecks within an hour of Port Sanilac or Lexington. Water clarity has dramatically increased in Lake Huron over the past 15 years. It is not uncommon to hear reports of 75 foot visibility. Deep and shallow water dives are equally rewarding. With all the interest generated by the many wrecks of the Great Storm of 1913, the Sanilac Underwater Preserve was formed to protect these wrecks from treasure hunters and salvagers. Commercial dive charters operate out of both Lexington and Port Sanilac Harbors. Compressed air and dive supplies are available in Port Sanilac. Several Detroit metropolitan area dive shops organize dive trips to the Thumb area.

Kayaking
Kayaking along the shores of Lake Huron is gaining in popularity. The clean, clear water; the calm, soothing action of the waves; and the beauty of the shoreline all combine to give the novice or experienced kayaker a refreshing experience. Take the opportunity to explore isolated beaches easily accessible from the water. Now with the introduction of the Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail linking Saginaw Bay, around Lake Huron through the southern tip of Sanilac County, distances between landings can be as little as a mile or less. Visit thumbtrails.com for more info. See map, page 25.

Firefighters 9-11 Memorial Brown City Fire Hall
Sanilac County is proud to include the Firefighters 9-11 Memorial as a testimony to the 343 firefighters that lost their lives assisting at the disaster in New York City on 9-11. Those men and women relinquished all thought of themselves, to pursue their call to become a Firefighter. This memorial is in remembrance of the nearly three thousand victims that lost their lives on that tragic day. The memorial is located in the southwest corner of Sanilac County, in Brown City. This is a perfect rural setting for a piece of history that will not be forgotten. The Brown City Fire department submitted a request for an artifact for the specific purpose of constructing a memorial for those firefighters who lost their lives in the disaster on 9-11, 2001. From out of more than 2,000 requests from around the country and abroad on March 1st, 2011, they received the official call from the New York Port Authority that they did indeed secure an artifact from the world trade center. This piece of history, a steel beam measuring 19 foot long, four feet tall, three foot wide and weighing nearly 15,000 pounds was recovered from the world trade center along with other pieces that were stored for nearly a decade at hanger 17, JFK airport in New York. The massive beam is the centerpiece for the memorial located on the corner property of the Brown City Fire Hall:  4090 Main Street, Brown City Michigan.

Sanilac County – Brews & Wines The growing wine industry is blooming in Sanilac County and the thumb area, offering a wide selection of wines to tempt every taste bud! From wine tasting rooms with live music and food to down-on-the-farm charm, our wineries have a lot to offer! Take a drive and visit the vineyards, and learn the art of winemaking for yourself. Many varieties of wine throughout the thumb feature fruit such as pears, apples, and blackberries, to name only a few. Of course, classic wine from grapes such as the Concorde and Chardonnay are plentiful; and there are even Gold medal wines available from winemakers right here in the thumb! Starting from the south and working our way north, is downtown Lexington. The Lexington Brewing Company and Wine House is open year-round and features wine tasting, food and entertainment. Their second location is the Blue Water Winery and Vineyard located at 7131 Holverson Road, south of Port Sanilac. Onsite wine tasting in season is available at this location as well as some unique events including an opportunity to help harvest the grapes in the fall! The site for our next stop, 3 North Vines Winery, located at 5940 Peck Road in Croswell, was selected for its beauty, geological significance, and its proximity to Lake Huron. The vineyard and winery are located on thirty five acres of rolling hills, dotted with three ponds and glimpses of Lake Huron. Geologically, the site is protected by the Port Huron Moraine that helps extend the lake effect weather conditions to Michigan’s east coast. The 3 North team includes the owners Nate and Kristi Shopbell, the advisory board, and an amazing supportive group of family and friends. All of our wineries have their own special flavor, but they all share two things in common: pride in their craftsmanship and joy of sharing conversation with visitors, so enjoy and drive safely! New this year is Elk Street Brewery in Sandusky offering hand-crafted, premium microbrews using locally grown hops. Their brews are designed for maximum flavor, smoothness, and drinkability. This micro-brewery uses only the freshest grains, yeasts and water in each of their unique, hand-crafted, premium beers. All of their beers are whole grain with no preservatives. They proudly feature locally sustained hops from Sanilac County’s own commercial hop yard; Barkshanty Hops, LLC. Their hops reflect the richness and integrity of the local soil otherwise known as the Thumb of Michigan. Combine their quality ingredients with years of brewing experience and the results are truly superior brews. Stop in for a pint or two, or maybe a tasting flight to sample. They also offer convenient carry-out growlers for purchase. Fresh Michigan roasted French press coffee, tea, craft root beer and sparking juice is also served. Be sure to stop in and experience their hospitality and beverages in their completely renovated, turn-of-the-century micro-brewery.
