Michigan’s “Showboat City”

8

Chesaning, like many mid-Michigan towns, started as a lumbering community. You’ll see it in the beautifully restored lumber baron mansions throughout town. One of Chesaning’s best-known attractions is the Chesaning Showboat, an annual variety show that draws the likes of the Oak Ridge Boys, .38 Special, Three Dog Night and Lonestar. The Showboat has been entertaining thousands each year since the 1940s. Why not you?? A stay in one of the luxuriously appointed rooms at The Stone House Bed & Breakfast, a Victorian-style home which still features the original leaded-glass windows, hardwood floors and magnificent oak woodwork, will

take you back in time to the town’s golden age. Scrapbookers and crafters can spend days and nights letting their artistic juices flow and their imaginations soar at Creative Passions Crop and Quilt Retreat and Cropping Daze Retreat. Bargain hunters know Chesaning for its antique shows and sidewalk sales, held during both the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. A new event for the fall is the Saginaw County Harvest Festival held at the Saginaw County Fairgrounds. Two notable events on the town’s holiday calendar are the Candlelight Walk, held annually on the weekend after Thanksgiving, and the North Pole Express & Santa’s Village, a great holiday happening for kids and their families.

“Michigan’s Little Bavaria”

10

Visitors come to Frankenmuth from all over the United States and the world to shop at the world’s largest Christmas store Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, and to eat a worldfamous chicken dinner at the Bavarian Inn or Zehnder’s Family Restaurants. The charming town, known as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria,” is one of the state’s primary tourist attractions, proudly welcoming millions of guests each year. From its historic mills to its wide variety of shopping and dining establishments, Frankenmuth promises fun for every member of the family. Accenting the town’s strong German flavor is the engaging, old-fashioned glockenspiel tower

just outside the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. The clock, whose cheerful tones ring through the town six times daily, stands two stories high. You’ll find another reminder of Frankenmuth’s European heritage on the front lawn of the Chamber of Commerce. The Herbert L. Keinath Memorial Fountain and Sculpture is a captivating work of art depicting five life-sized children, clad in traditional German costume, and a dog, dancing around a Maypole. Close your eyes and you can almost hear the children laughing and singing, especially during one of the many festivals that Frankenmuth hosts throughout the year!

Strong Roots, Strong Future

12

Saginaw boasts a long, rich history highlighted by the lumber industry that made the city a thriving commercial center in the 19th century. The city was home to 60 sawmills in the mid1880s, and even today, if you sit along the Saginaw River, you can almost see the “river hogs” riding the logs downstream. Today, of course, the lumber barons are long gone, but their influence remains a vital part of the city’s ongoing tradition.

If it’s natural beauty you’re after, visit Ezra Rust Park, with its captivating water fountains and rose garden, or Ojibway Island. Pass over the bridge and back through the years to Old Saginaw City, where you’ll want to check out the engaging mid-to-late 19th century architecture on Court Street, as well as the many points of interest along the river on Hamilton Street including Pit & Balcony, Michigan’s oldest community theatre.

You’ll never forget an evening spent at the Speaking of culture, don’t miss such Saginaw Montague Inn, a gracious Georgian bed treasures as the JapaneseTea House, the Saginaw and breakfast rated one of the nation’s most Art Museum and its lovely formal gardens, the romantic Inns by Glamour Magazine. After a Castle Museum of Saginaw County History, the delectable continental breakfast, take a morning Temple Theatre, and the breathtaking work stroll up and down Washington Avenue, where of sculptor Marshall M. Fredericks at Saginaw you’ll discover a host of reminders of Saginaw’s Valley State University. fascinating past. 800.444.9979 • www.visitsaginawvalley.com
