4-H Youth

Willard 4-H’er Rebekah Presley Becomes First Youth Representative on Greene County Extension Council My name is Rebekah Presley. I am 15 years old and originally from Jonesboro, Arkansas. My family moved to Springfield in November 2013.

I am in 9th grade at “Presley Academy.” This is my seventh-year homeschooling and most days I’m glad we do. I enjoy reading, history, Rebekah Presley art and bowling. As a family, we enjoy playing games together, watching television and movies, and travelling.

This is my second year in 4-H. When I began, honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

My club, Shooting Stars, is new and I think we are the first club that was begun specifically for special needs and homeschooled children. I serve as treasurer and on the fundraising and finance committees.

Because my club is newly formed and I wanted to become involved in the county leadership, I joined the teen council. I was intrigued when I heard that the extension office was looking for a teenage representative and that it would be a good fit for a homeschooler.

I immediately wanted to try for the position. I look forward to learning more about the extension office and how I can be more involved in the 4-H community.

Greene County 4-H “Share the Fun Night” is April 22 Share the Fun Night will begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, April 22 at Willard First Baptist Church, 202 W. Jackson, Willard.

Presentations by 4-H youth will include either skits or talent numbers. Two winners will be selected to represent the county at the regional Share the Fun portion of the Regional Achievement Day held later this summer.

Personal Presentation Day

Personal Presentations Day for 4-H is set for 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 30 at the Springfield Livestock Marketing Center.

Local 4-H members will be doing demonstrations, public speaking, a fashion revue and project presentations on arts and crafts, dogs, poultry, beef, foods, shooting sports, cake decorating, horses, swine, clothing, and photography.

More About 4-H

As the largest out-of-school youth organization in the world, 4-H is open to all boys and girls, ages 5 to18. Children who are five to seven years old are eligible for 4H Clover Kids, an introductory program. Youths who are 8 to 18 years of age can select from a variety of 4-H projects and activities that stress social and life skills in areas like decision making, communication, social interaction, civic responsibility and physical skills. Children do not have to live on a farm to join 4-H. Pr oject opportunities include computers, robotics, foods and nutrition, horticulture, large and small animals and more. Missouri 4-H is University of Missouri Extension's youth development program.

Housing and Urban Development Specialist

Barber Presents at VOICE VOICE (Vocational Opportunities Inspiring Children in Elementary) is a program in Greene County organized by the Ozark Area Community Action Corporation. This is a hands-on style career fair that brings in local professionals/specialists to present their careers to children in Springfield Public Schools.

“After hearing about MU Extension, and watching Jeff Barber present, I was impressed and would love to see how we can bring more volunteers from your program,” said Brenna Davis, Ozark Area Community Action Corporation VOICE Project Coordinator.

Barber did a presentation for children in grades 3-6 about architecture.

He showed the students displays of buildings, elevator drafts and blueprints.

“Jeff did well in connecting how all Jeff Barber subjects in school Housing and design were important in the barberj@missouri.edu creation of all types of buildings. The children loved it,” said Davis.

Jeff Barber is working with leaders in area communities and students at Drury to develop projects and visioning documents that improve living and expand economic options. Legislative Day Four Represent Greene County Extension at Legislative Day Council members Joe Crim and Ann Hall represented Greene County Extension in Jefferson City at the 43rd Annual University of Missouri Legislative Day on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Patrick Byers, horticulture specialist, and David Burton, civic communication specialist, joined in the fun as well.

The delegation was able to meet with four local representatives to express thanks for their support of University of Missouri Extension and to also discuss local MU Extension programs.

Nearly 500 volunteers attending this year’s legislative day.

94th Ag Production Conference Draws 102 on March 21 Greene County MU Extension’s annual Agriculture Production Conference and Soil and Water Conservation District Annual Meeting drew 102 attendees on March 21 at the Springfield Livestock Marketing Center. One of the featured speakers, Dr. Tim Evans, discovered audience members had lots of questions about dead cattle after his presentation (at right).

As county program director: David also works with the elected council to operate, fund and administer the local Greene County Extension office and to plan local programs, to engage council members in this and other work, and to generate local revenue to support programs in Greene County.

Human Development Specialist Youth Program Quality Assessments Several after school programs in the Southwest region have been assessed for program quality.

The Youth Program Quality Assessment (PQA) is a validated instrument designed to evaluate the quality of youth programs and identify staff training needs. University Extension staff conduct this evidence based assessment tool. Recently I conducted assessments at two schools in Nixa, a Boys and Girls Club in Branson, and a school in Monett

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) is an 8week strength-training program for older adults. SSSH is modeled after the evidencedbased Strong Women program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.

Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured and effective strength-training program. At each session a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and build the strength beneficial to health.

Stone County Senior Citizens Taking Part in Stay Strong, Stay Healthy 2 A group of 14 senior citizens from stone county meet each Monday and Thursday morning from 9:30-10:30 at the Court House Annex in Galena. Their meeting dates are March 16,20,23,27,30, April 3,6,10,13,17,20,24,27 and May 1,4,8.

Community Discussion Forum A community discussion for university extension was held in Ozark on March 10, 2017.

Community leaders and other extension stake holders discussed issues of concern in the Renette Wardlow southwest region.

Human Development The half day discus- wardlowr@missouri.edu sion forum group members came up with a list of programs that need to be addressed in the region. I served as one of the table leaders.

Blueberry School Attracts 85

Although they are a challenging crop to produce, blueberries are in high demand for many Missouri markets and offer a huge potential for Missouri farmers according to Patrick Byers, horticulture specialist with University of Missouri Extension. The Missouri Blueberry School was held March 17-18 at Missouri State University’s Darr School of Agriculture Bond Building in Springfield. The school featured educational sessions and a tour of innovative blueberry farms. The keynote speaker was Dr. Bill Cline of North Carolina State University.

Nutrition and Food Policy Feel Better Now/Chronic Disease SelfManagement Program

Health Department Personnel were provided with Stock Healthy, Shop Healthy: Community Toolkits; State and Regional partners have met for a comprehensive training which included pre and post evaluation training, program Pam Duitsman implementation and Nutrition Specialist curriculum training. duitsmanp@missouri.edu Grocer agreements have been put in place and base-line assessments are being conducted for each grocer. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is funding county health departments to collaborate with MU Extension.

Pam has taught twelve classes so far in 2017, with 125 participants. Several more classes are scheduled for 2017. The cost of this series is covered by a grant from CDC, and participants learn: techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; appropriate use of medications; communicating effectively with health professionals; nutrition; and how to evaluate new treatments.

Outcomes of this class include:  Improvement of health outcomes and reduction of health care utilization  Decreased activity limitations and depression symptoms  Improved communication with health care provider  Improvements in quality of life, fatigue and sleep problems  Improvements in pain and Local Food Presentations, shortness of breath  A significant improvement Projects and Education in ER visits and hospitalization Pam has presented two
