Extension Council Gets Clear Audit
Five of our awesome extension council volunteers met on March 9 and conducted the annual audit of Greene County Extension Council’s financials, which includes designed funds for the Master Naturalists and Master Gardeners.. The group used a checklist provided by the University to conduct the audit. The group gave a clear audit for the year but did recommend raising the soil test price to $30 from $29.50. Thanks to Jim Garton, Tyler Gunlock, Jason Whitesell, Lisa Bakerink and Kent John. For doing the audit Thanks also to office manager Maggie Black for getting files prepared.
Century Farm Committee Formed A council formed Century Farm Committee will start work very soon to consider ways to revamp the program/ David Burton Civic communication fundraiser used to recognize area Century burtond@missouri.edu Farms. The event — including music and a fundraising auction — has been done the same way for five years and could use a freshing up. The core goals remain the same however: to honor Greene County Century Farms (old and new) in a fun and festive atmosphere that is revenue positive while also honoring local agriculture.

Lofaro Named MU Tiger Ambassador for Greene County The Greene County University of Missouri Extension Council has named Mike Lofaro of Springfield as the first MU Tiger Ambassador for Greene County through a new program designed to raise awareness of Mizzou Athletics statewide. Lofaro was identified as a county resident with real passion for Mizzou athletics through an essay he submitted as part of the search process. He was encouraged to apply by an extension council member. Lofaro is a season ticket holder for Missouri football and the creator and organizer of http:// www.mizzoutailgate.com. He also regularly attends Mizzou men’s basketball games. “I wanted to do more than just sit in the stands and watch the football game. … I started my own Mizzou Tailgate outside of the stadium. It started small with family and friends but over the years, the tailgate grew to include hometown friends from Springfield,” said Lofaro. “The tailgate eventually grew so large I created the website to make things more organized and convenient for the large amount of people attending.” The website also combined Lofaro’s two favorite things: Mizzou sports and the internet. Lofaro, the owner of Business Solutions of Springfield, has 25 years of experience in technology consulting. During those 25 years Lofaro has also stayed active in the community and raised two children in the very schools he and his wife attended years ago. Both of Lofaro’s children are students at the University of Missouri. His son is a junior, majoring in journalism with an emphasis in strategic communications. His son also does graphic design work for Mizzou’s volleyball team. His daughter is a freshman working toward a nursing degree. “I believe in the tradition and love that Online at http://extension.missouri.edu
surrounds Mizzou does not need to be limited to Columbia. I will do my best to share my passion for this incredible school in my community, and anywhere else I can, as the MU Tiger Ambassador for Greene County,” said Lofaro. ROLE AND PURPOSE The ambassador program is designed to help generate enthusiasm for Mizzou athletes, teams and accomplishments, and to enhance the visibility of MU teams in all 114 counties by deputizing athletic ambassadors through the established network of County MU Extension Councils. Each county extension council appoints someone who is enthusiastic about MU and its teams, and who has the desire to be a source of information where they live about Mizzou and Mizzou Athletics. In return, Ambassadors will enjoy a unique experience that comes with some insider perks in exchange for helping us to educate and engage Mizzou fans in their communities,

Greene County MU Extension Annual Meeting Places Emphasis on Community Impacts and Missourians Dr. Marshall Stewart, vice chancellor for extension and engagement at the University of Missouri, gave the keynote address at the annual meeting of the Greene County MU Extension Council held Feb. 26 at the Botanical Center in Springfield. Stewart encouraged council members and staff to continue working hard to engage Missourians and to provide programs that make a difference in people’s lives. “We are undergoing a lot of change in MU Extension. We are moving forward with changes we believe will make it possible to make a greater impact statewide,” said Stewart. A report completed in 2017 by TEConomy indicates that MU Extension’s annual reach and impact touches more than 1.3 million Missourians who participate in local MU Extension programs. That assessment of MU Extension found that with an annual investment of $86 million (2016), MU Extension generated dividends totaling nearly $950 million. “I knew our people were busy, but this report really brought into focus the value of their efforts to improve the lives of Missourians,” said Stewart. “These findings, about extension and the needs of the people we serve will be used to guide future decisions.” These numbers also mean an investment in county extension has a tenfold return. HONOR ROLL HONOREES Two individuals – Katie Keith and Lane McConnell -- were presented with Leaders “Honor Roll” Awards. This annual award honors outstanding University of Missouri Extension community partners who have excelled in supporting or co-teaching named extension programs. partnership with MU Extension over the last ten years. She has cooperated with MU Extension on workshops, classes and grants, and especially at Farmer’s Market of the Ozarks. “I’ve partnered on many projects with Lane. She has Duitsman and McConnell been an amazing community partner, supporter, local food advocate, and friend. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor,” said Dr. Pam Duitsman, MU Extension community McGowan and Keith development specialist, while introducing McConnell. Keith, who has served on the extension council four years and is also director of the Botanical Center which houses the Greene County Extension Council, was also recognized for her cooperative spirit and Page 9

She can identify both native and ornamental plants even in the dead of winter,” said Kelly McGowan, MU Extension horticulture educator, while introducing Keith. “Katie is also a great advocate for our hundreds of volunteers. She is always willing to help with any volunteer coordination duties and always willing to provide hands-on training for volunteer development. Food System Forum Focuses on Farm to Table
Participants engaged with a diverse group of statewide and local stakeholders and expert panelists offering education and facilitated discussion concerning the challenges, opportunities, resources, certifications, trainings, regulations, and steps needed to improve connections in our Food System from farm to table. The forum allowed us to begin mapping success to build the local food system. Work has continued with the Missouri Department of Agriculture, Missouri and Regional USDA Development, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Food Hub developers, University of Missouri Department of Applied Sciences, Lenders, Lincoln University educators, Food Distributors, and many state and local stakeholder organizations. Next steps include development of key materials that will be used to implement a pilot project to guide local food system connections. The long-term goal is to be
able to replicate this across the state. Future events are also planned. Participants gave written feedback which included: 100% reported this event was needed or very needed Pam Duitsman 100% reported Nutrition Specialist improved duitsmanp@missouri.edu understanding of their role, and the bigger picture, of the food system 89% reported they would change their behavior based on what they learned, and gave examples of how they plan to engage in food system development

Workshop to Help Specialty Crop Growers to Scale up University of Missouri Extension will host a Specialty Crop Block Grant (SCBG) writing workshop in Springfield from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 26. A portion of the workshop will focus on scaling-up production of specialty crops according to organizer Dr. Pam Duitsman, nutrition and health education specialist with MU Extension. The term “specialty crop” is a designation by USDA which includes fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits and vegetables, maple syrup, honey, and horticulture (including floriculture and nursery plants). “These crops are gaining attention across the US as the demand for “local food” continues to grow,” said Duitsman. “Specialty crops
are distinguished from field crops such as soybeans, hay and wheat. Consumers are increasingly demanding more specialty crops, which has initiated a trend for many markets to try to offer a wider range and year-round availability of specialty crops.” Scaling up increases farmer capacity to effectively produce high-quality products in larger quantities for local and regional markets. “Scaling up means connecting to markets beyond the direct relationship between farmer and consumer. It refers to taking production to a higher-volume to make locally and sustainably produced food available in more places to more people,” said Duitsman. To register, visit the Greene County MU Extension online at or call (417) 881-8909.

Nutrition Program Associate Success Story: A client from an Eating Smart Being Active class, at The Fairbanks community center, stopped by my table at another event to look at the information and recipes. She said she was really enjoying the ESBA classes. It was a great reminder to balance all the food groups and exercise, as she continues to try to lose weight. She mentioned how “apprehensive” she had been to try the “Nutty Apple Spinach Salad” we had made for the class, but she had found it to be delicious! The next day, she went to the store and bought all the ingredients and was making and sharing the recipe with friends. She was proud to be eating a darker green vegetable and using a lighter, healthier salad dressing.
