Great Game of Business for Government
Great Game of Business for Government: Greene County Extension Version
Update: Greene County Extension specialists and staff will participate in a day-long GGOB retreat on Friday, Dec. 2. The goal of the retreat is to plan out the 2017 program calendar with a special focus on programs that require paid registration. Our goal is to have one or two programs each month that everyone in the office can focus on to help promote and to participate in at some point. Having one or two featured programs each month will also help us target our advertising and marketing efforts on programs that contribute to the bottom-line of the office’s financial needs. Staff will also plan out a minimum of four mini-games for 2017 and will discuss ways to better incorporate Greene County Extension Council members in to those mini-games. Agriculture
County Commissioners Ag Tour Nov. 17 Rated a Success Greene County Commissioners and other members of Greene County leadership participated in a tour of local agriculture assets on Thursday, Nov. 17. The tour visited examples of urban farming, beef farming/grazing, farmto-school and farm to table projects and a 95year old agriculture business. “Agribusiness makes a significant contribution to our regional economy, and we wanted to get a more in-depth look at some of the local operations that are a vital part of that industry in Greene County,” said 1st District Commissioner Harold Bengsch. Greene County Commissioners made their first stop at Sunny Spring Farm owned by Bill and Stacey Shields at 1248 N. State Hwy. T, Bois D'arc. The Shields have an intensive grazing management grass/cattle operation. Dan Bigbee’s urban Fasnight Creek Farm at 1366 S Fort Ave., Springfield was
the second tour stop. The biggest opportunity he sees is all of the vacant land inside the city that is mowed and seen as a liability but could be suitable for farming. At noon, the group enjoyed a sponsored lunch of locally sourced foods at the Metropolitan Farmer, 2144 E Republic Rd, Springfield, Mo. Chef Wes J ohnson discussed the process of sourcing locally grown foods for his restaurant. Commissioners learned about the Farm to School movement in Greene County with a stop at Hickory Hills School, 4650 East State Highway YY, Springfield. Spr ingfield Public Schools Farm to School Coordinator Stephanie Smith and Kay Johnson, a Master Gardener, led the tour of the rooftop garden and school greenhouse. The final stop at Crescent Mill at 1022 W Phelps St, Springfield showcased the oldest remaining feed mill in Greene County. Extension specialists participating in this tour include Pam Duitsman, Patrick Byers, David Burton and Tim Schnakenberg.

Civic Communication Specialist & County Program Director Changes to Monthly Council Agenda A written County Program Director report will free up the agenda each month to discuss: 1) possible future programs with the council; 2) our program and event calendar; 3) an extension specialist presentation; 4) and give a financial education component as part of the Great Game of Business. Services of Bookkeeper Retained Lisa Pearson of Lisa’s Bookkeeping has been hired and once a month she will visit our office for about three hours to input bills, reconcile checking and credit card accounts, and do other necessary paperwork for checks (including payroll) and financial reports at a cost of $75 per hour. Office manager will continue to manage daily funds and deposits (with my oversight). Hiring a qualified bookkeeper provides a needed layer of security/protection for the office audit trail, provides back-up should our office manager be gone, and frees up the office manager’s time to better help the office, CPD and customers. This move is necessary in advance of funding any 4-H positions. Maggie has met twice with Lisa who has made recommendations on modifications to accounts and reporting. The goal is also to increase transparency in our reports and improve our accounting practices.
Withdrawal from campus fund Greene County Extension maintains a gift account at MU and once a year we transfer monies from that account to the local Greene County Extension checking account to fund office operations. The monies in this account come from online donations during the year and interest from our endowment. These are amounts available for withdrawal from the “Greene County Extension Endowment Distribution Account” as of June 30, 2016: Online gifts in 2016: $2,174.51; Endowment interest: $146.52.
Fundraising Report Donor numbers for our fall campaign are down $2,000. The decrease is likely due to the timing of the mailing this year since postcards arrived with political mail. I’m working with University of Missouri David Burton staff on a MU Giving Civic communication Week in March. burtond@missouri.edu Greene County Extension will participate as a pilot as a way to improve our outreach with MU alumni.
Great Game of Business/Non-Profits Attended a Great Game of Business training offered by Community Foundation of the Ozarks. Jay Chism and Dr. Pam Duitsman attended with me and 25 other non-profit representatives. We learned about the success Big Brothers/Big Sisters has had using the Great Game from Mizzou graduate and former BBBS director Katie Davis. We also got some great ideas from the program. 1) The way council members are included in the game will be changed in 2017. 2) We are adding a more visible financial scorecard to the office managers office, our website and social media; 3) Put up a poster with information explaining our office involvement in GGOB; 4) Our 10-minute staff huddles are being changed to Tuesday afternoons in 2017. 5) Researching how to move annual profits to endowment fund to build it. 6) Remove scorecard from newsletter.
David Burton’s focus of work as civic communication specialist: Community engagement thr ough communication and media relations, leading and moderating focus groups, non-profit education, social media in support of disaster recovery, marketing extension regionally, heritage tourism; and engaging council members with media relations efforts like the Southwest Region News Service. As county program director: David also works with the elected council to operate, fund and administer the local Greene County Extension office and to plan local programs, to engage council members in this and other work, and to generate local revenue to support programs in Greene County.

Civic Communication Specialist & County Program Director Council meeting lunches Future council meetings will have food available for purchase by those who register prior to our meeting. Staff enjoys the convenience and believe it is important to have for guests since these are noon meetings. I have researched the start of council lunches and it corresponds with the approval of the 2016 budget by the council in January. Council did not vote on a motion related to food at noon meetings (council members requested it in the budget as part of moving meetings to noon and wanting to feel appreciated). However what council did discuss and vote on was the budget recommendation which clearly listed noon lunches. Tammy VanForester’s motion in 2014 was for meals at evening meetings, specifically.

Nutrition and Food Policy Voices for Food Project:
Pam’s work as state-wide Coordinator for the Voices for Food project has continued in earnest this past month. Food Insecurity surveys have been conducted over the past month with Food Pantry Clients, Food Pantry Staff and Directors, Food Council members, and Community Stakeholders. The surveys provide information for USDA on the level of Food Insecurity in SW Missouri, and also on the level of community engagement in agricultural and other activities to alleviate hunger. Since August, over 550 surveys have been collected from Food Insecure individuals. In addition to data collection, multiple nutrition education classes were held this past month, three Food Policy councils met. Planning meetings for grant proposals and for upcoming workshops were conducted, and several community level programs for food insecure individuals were coordinated and supported. This project focuses on working with communities to develop and implement sustainable solutions to increase availability and access to healthy foods. Pam is the state coordinator of this a federally funded six-state research project, focused on improving Community Food Security.

OACAC Head Start Teachers attend training
Twenty -seven OACAC Head Start teachers participated in a three-hour workshop offered by University Extension. The teachers are required to participate in training each year to maintain their accreditation. The first half of the session was dedicated to examining challenging behaviors from both the perspective of a child and an adult. The course, “See as a Child, feel as a Child,” is designed to approach such issues as picky eaters, temper tantrums, biting, spitting, and other issues that Head Start teachers face every day. The teachers were offered real solutions to these frustrating behaviors. The second half of the workshop focused on the topic, “Avoid Behavior Problems by Teaching Self Control.” This session addresses some of the most common behavioral problems of young children. Teachers were offered solutions to combat behaviors such as hitting and power struggles.
Day Care Training Comes to an end for 2016
Each year, child day care providers are required to participate in a minimum of 12 clock hours of training. Fifty providers from Christian, Stone and Taney Counties attended four different 3 hour sessions. Session topics included behavior problems, self-control, turning good play into great play, building positive relationships with children, teaching children respect and tolerance, and is there a vaccine for rudeness.
Stay Strong Stay Healthy
Five, sixteen session, workshops are being held in the SW region for senior citizens. We are about half way through each series. Seniors are feeling stronger; they say that they have better balance and are more flexible since they began the class. Seventy-one senior citizens from Galena, Republic, Ash Grove, Northview Senior Center in Springfield or the Southside Senior Center in Springfield. The workshops are funded by the Greene County Senior Tax fund. A second proposal will be written to conduct the Advanced Stay Strong, Stay Healthy class in Republic, and to offer the basic class to Senior Citizens in Rogersville and Strafford.
