Stay Strong, Stay Healthy

Regular business classes are held at the Small Business Development and Technology Center, 405 North Jefferson Ave., Springfield. Assorted dates and topics. Register by calling 417-836-5685 or check online www.ws.missouristate.edu/sbdc.

This program is designed to help older adults Improve strength, flexibility and balance which will reduce falls and lead to a healthier, more active lifestyle. These exercises are low-impact/low eight. All needed equipment is provided during the class. Pre-registration is required and class size is limited. Call 881-8909.

Gardening Programs The Master Gardeners maintain a busy program calendar as well and it can be accessed on the chapter website at http://mggreene.org/

Garden Inspired Writing Retreat This program is for anyone who wants to be more creative whether you like journal writing, poetry, fiction, non-fiction or news writing. Bring your own writing tools. Meet in the Botanical Center Atrium. Sessions available in 2013: Feb. 6, March 6, April 3 and May 1 Time: 9 a.m. to noon Fee: $20 per person, per session Registration available online. Age: All ages

Farm Management for Women: Annie’s Project Starts March 3 A series of farm management courses designed for women – known as Annie’s Project –will be offered at University of Missouri Extension in Greene County starting March 3. The course should be of interest to women who want to learn how to run a farm as a business.

The Annie’s Project course includes six evening classes on Mondays (March 3, 10, 17, 24, and April 7, 14). The classes will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center, 2400 S. Scenic Ave, Springfield, Mo. Class size will be limited to 25 women. Master Gardener Training The Master Gardener sessions will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., starting Feb. 18 and running through April 1.

The classes will be held at the Botanical Center, 2400 South Scenic, Springfield.

A total of 13 three-hour sessions taught by trained professionals will cover horticulture principles and practices.

Enrollment for the class is limited and there is a fee of $150 per person or $255 per couple to cover the costs of the program and materials. Two orientation sessions to be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28 and Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at the Botanical Center.

Health Insurance Education Initiative 







Pam offered workshops in Greene County in January for City of Springfield Retirees.

Ninety-six (96) individuals attended these presentations this month.

Attendees learn to make informed health insurance decisions, increase their knowledge and skills about health insurance, improve health-literacy, and increase their confidence in complying with the new health-care law (Affordable Care Act).

Some of what participants gain:  Awareness – who is eligible for what, how to obtain insurance, etc.  General health insurance literacy  Unbiased pre-enrollment education for informed health insurance decisionmaking  Education on how to use the plan purchased  Connect Missourians with resources Pam is working with the SW MO community marketplace partnership to provide coordinated programing to reach audiences in Greene and surrounding counties.

Ozarks Regional Food Policy Council 



The ORFPC is a forum for representatives of the local food system, and provides a framework for addressing and providing solutions to issues such as food production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste disposal. The group operates through a group of committees: Healthy People; Strong Communities; Sustainable Ecosystems; Thriving Local Economies; and Vibrant Farms.

This month focused on analysis and reporting from the in-depth Food System Assessment we conducted in 2013; and next steps as ORFPC moves forward.

USDA Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Grant: 

During January, Pam has completed a draft community toolkit to assist rural communities with developing Food Policy Councils; and also a toolkit to help rural communities reduce Food Insecurity. This work is being done in collaboration with five other states in the North Central Region of Cooperative Extension. These materials will be utilized in SW Missouri beginning in 2014.

Coming in February: Stay Strong Stay Healthy 11-week course – This strength training class focuses on improving strength, flexibility and balance for middle-aged to senior adults. The class has been shown to promote a healthier, more active lifestyle, increase bone density, reduce falls, improve arthritis symptoms, and increase flexibility in middle-aged and older adults. The class will be held at the Botanical Center, and runs from February 3 through April 14.

This is the third school year I have been able to offer nutrition lessons at Reed middle school.

This year I was able to reach 141 students in 6th -8th grades. Although the Eating Smart class at Price Cutter Family Nutrition Education Program was rescheduled due to weather, 2160 W. AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE MEETING— SOILS AND CROPS CONFERENCE For the first time in seven years, a committee of county residents met with me and the agronomy specialist serving our county to help plan out the soils and crops conference. This year’s event promises to have great topics and speakers. We hope attendance improves and that we are able to find the necessary corporate sponsorships to be able to provide some food for those in attendance. Tim Schnakenberg is the agronomy specialist getting this year’s event organized.

More About 4-H As the largest out-of-school youth organization in the world, 4-H is open to all boys and girls, ages 5 to18. Children who are five to seven years old are eligible for 4-H Clover Kids, an introductory program. Youths who are 8 to 18 years of age can select from a variety of 4-H projects and activities that stress social and life skills in areas such as decision making, communication, social interaction, civic responsibility and physical skills. Children do not have to live on a farm to join 4-H. Project opportunities include computers, robotics, foods and nutrition, horticulture, large and small animals and more. Youth Find Their Voice at State 4-H Public Speaking Contest

The Missouri Master Naturalist Program results from a partnership created in 2004 between the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and MU Extension (MUE). These two organizations are the sponsors of the program at the state level. The Missouri Master Naturalist Program is recognized as a “named and branded” educational program within MU Extension. The MU School of Natural Resources is the academic home for the Program.

Exactly 130 youth from 46 counties competed at the State 4-H Public Speaking Contest on September 21. Speakers ages 818 competed in one of five categories: prepared speaking, technology-assisted speaking, extemporaneous speaking, interpretation and public service announcement.

It is often said that future success depends on the ability to communicate effectively. If this is true, the participants in the 2013 State Public Speaking Contest are certainly on track to accomplish great things.

The contest takes those communication skills learned in county 4-H programs and develops them on a larger stage. "While competition is encouraged, it’s actually a means to an end," said Bradd Anderson, State 4-H Youth Specialist, who coordinates the event.

“Trophies can be great motivators, but it’s really about the skills they develop while striving to accomplish that goal.”

Master Gardeners of Greene County Master Gardeners of Greene County Looking Forward to an Exciting Year in 2014 Master Gardeners of Greene County will be celebrating our 30th anniversary this year and are throwing around some ideas for a celebration.

Stay tuned for more information!

The Master Gardener Program is a popular and successful statewide volunteer community-service organization administered through University of Missouri Extension. The organization’s goal is to train gardeners who are willing to share their knowledge with others. Master Gardeners become volunteers of University of Missouri Extension and donate hours for community educational projects in horticulture. Volunteer activities include working with non-profit organizations, maintaining community gardens, conducting workshops, participating in a Master Gardener speakers’ bureau and staffing the Master Gardener “Hotline.” The Master Gardeners of Greene County can boast of over 300 members. New Chapter Officers The new year is also starting with a new group of officers for the Master Gardener chapter.

Missy Sanford will be serving as new president.

George Deatz will continue as vice-president, Dellene Nelson will be serving as treasurer and Gail Wright as secretary. This is a great group of enthusiastic people who will be great leaders for our Master Gardener organization!

New Training Begins New member training begins on Feb. 18 and goes through April 1. There will be two orientation sessions for prospective new members on Jan. 28th and Jan. 30th. The Master Gardener hotline will open on March 3rd for 2014. It is open Monday– Friday and is located at the Botanical Center in Springfield. The hotline volunteers answer around 2000 gardening questions per year. People call, email, stop by, and bring in samples.

4-H Leader’s Council Meetings: 3rd Thursday of each month (except July) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2852 S Dayton Ave, Springfield.

Master Gardeners of Greene County— board meeting: First Monday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at the Botanical Center.

Master Naturalists Board Meetings: The board meets at 5:30 p.m. at the MDC regional office, on the second Wednesday of the month.

Master Gardeners of Greene County-membership meeting: Second Tuesday each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Botanical Center.
