Betterment Night is July 12 Greene County MU Extension has joined forces with the Ash Grove Sunshine Center to offer a unique event aimed at addressing challenges and improving the sense of community in Ash Grove.

The Ash Grove Betterment Night will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 12 at the Ash Grove Sunshine Center, 310 N Perryman Ave, Ash Grove.

All proceeds from the meal will stay with the Sunshine Center to support their building and programs for senior residents of the area. Admission is $8 per for a barbeque meal with sides and homemade cobbler and ice cream.

“With a quality turnout we hope to make this an annual event for residents of the 65604 zip code,” said David Burton, community development specialist with University of Missouri Extension in Greene County.

Community organizations will be highlighted at the event and Greene County MU Extension will provide three professional educators. The speaker topics have been selected based on local feedback received during the EXCEL leadership program.

Agriculture and Environment

Agronomy Activity Report for Greene County Tim Schankenberg is the agronomy specialist covering Greene County for MU Extension. He provides this occasional update about his work in this county. He also covers six other counties at this point.

Ozark Empire Fair Hay Show – The hay show will have no fair-time judging and evaluations are based on Relative Forage Quality instead of Relative Feed Value. We will be pulling hay samples in June and July.

Insect Trap Monitoring – Set out insect pheromone traps to monitor the movement of brown marmorated stinkbug, corn earworm, European corn borer, fall armyworm and true armyworm. We’ve had limited activity of true armyworms. Counts are recorded on the MU IPM website and alerts are provided for farmers who sign up for the service at https:// ipm.missouri.edu/pestmonitoring/.

Soil Analysis - Signed off on soil test recommendations and gave educational advice on tests for six counties including Greene.

Farm Consultations – Answered phone calls from local producers. Farm visits focused on grassland and grazing system development, new fescue stand evaluation, big bluestem/Indiangrass establishment plans, native grass management and weed control, pasture weed control, corn and soybean weed control and pearl millet establishment.

Soybean Fungicide Strip Trial Demonstration – Jill Scheidt and I are working to develop a test site on soybeans this year north of Springfield.

Greene County Commission Farm Tour Planning – Will assist with Greene County staff in planning the fall tour of the Greene County commissioners farm tour.

This tour is designed for Greene County government employees and elected officials.

AGRICULTURE AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

5th “Salute to Century and Family Farms” Event is Scheduled for Sept. 18 The fifth annual “Salute to Century and Family Farms” event scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the historic Round Barn Event Center along Clear Creek, 10731 W. US Hwy 160, Walnut Grove.

Greene County Extension will honor the newest Century Farms in the county, recognize a past Century Farm with MVP status, celebrate local family farms and hear from some area youth that plan to go in to farming. There will also be a live auction and some other fun activities with all proceeds going to the Greene County MU Extension Council to fund additional local programs.

The following four Greene County farms will be recognized at the 2018 event; Jeanette Forney of Strafford, Lindal and Carol Highfill of Fair Grove, Harriett McCall of Willard and Doug and Robin Shelton of Willard.

Attendees will be treated to a full meal provided by Maggie Mae’s Catering from Miller.

A sponsorship from Old Missouri Bank makes the dinner at the event possible. Members of the Greene County Extension Council are seeking other event sponsors.

To qualify for Century Farm status, a single family must have owned the farm for 100 consecutive years. The farm must be at least 40 acres of the original land acquisition and make a financial contribution to the overall farm income.

“Working Together to Create a Better Community” will be presented by David Burton, a community development specialist with MU Extension. “My presentation will focus on examples of ways for people in Ash Grove to connect with a non-profit with the goal of improving the local quality of life,” said Burton. “By working together, we can motivate a community toward betterment and that is good for everyone.”

Impacts from our Diabetes Classes in Greene County Diabetes self-management classes are interactive, and successfully build confidence in the ability of participants to manage their health while maintaining an active and fulfilling life.

The class meets as a series – for six weeks. Each class lasts 2-2½ hours.

Make Plans to Visit Master Gardeners of Greene County Vegetable Garden The Master Gardeners of Greene County (chaired by Carl Redmon, Nancy Chambers, and Denise Fleetwood) have redesigned their vegetable garden for the 2018 season opting for a traditional backyard vegetable garden design.

Homeowners are more interested than ever in growing healthy food for their families in their own backyards. The Master Gardeners wanted to highlight some easy-toreplicate ideas for visitors to try at their own homes.

Visitors will be able to see sevKelly eral different tomato cultivars inMcGowan cluding different trellising system ideas, squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, potatoes, sweet potatoes, horseradish, peppers, green beans and sweet corn.

There are also unique plants on display including espalier apples (4 different cultivars), mushrooms, figs, container gardening ideas, and straw bale gardening ideas.

In addition to the beautiful vegetable garden, visitors can see a wide variety of herbs, native plants, ornamental and flowering plants, options for shady areas, and much more.
