Drury University students with the Hammons School of Architecture’s Center for Community Studies (CCS) led a visioning exercise this semester to help define the future of 3.5 acres of land on Commercial Street in Springfield currently owned by The Kitchen, Inc. Their efforts culminated with a public tour on C-Street the middle of May (shown above). Jeff Barber with MU Extension helps to plan and lead this joint educational effort.

Family Nutrition Education Program Becky Roark

Family Nutrition Education Program

On May 7th, Sherri and I 2160 W. Chesterfield Blvd. Suite F200 were part of nutrition education Chesterfield Village, Springfield, Mo. at the Convoy of Hope ComTel: 417-886-2059 * http://missourifamilies.org munity Event. Over 1,000 people visited our area to receive a healthy snack for kids, basic nutrition information and free recipes. We saw many children from the schools we teach at and people from our food pantries. It was a great way for the Family Nutrition Williams Edmondson Fossett Nevatt Education Program to connect with a large community resource event.

I finished up classes for Pre-k through 2nd grades at Holland and Sherwood Elementary Schools (415 students). One Kindergarten teacher told me that the Facebook page for her class had many comments about the children being more willing to eat their Wood Hull Roark fruits and vegetables at home.

Family Nutrition Education Program Duitsman, the Springfield Greene County Health Department, Springfield Housing Authority and Downtown Market.

They are teaching “Eating Smart Being Active” nutrition education classes at Heritage, Stillwell, Madison and South Towers.

Twice a month they will be at the Downtown Market to do taste tests of fresh produce.

Stock Healthy, Shop Healthy is a comprehensive, community-based program that allows communities to improve access to healthy, affordable foods by working with a small food retailer.

Millions of Americans have limited access to a supermarket, which means they must rely on fast-food restaurants, gas stations and corner stores to feed themselves and their families. People who have better access to supermarkets are more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables and less likely to be overweight or obese.

Master Beekeeper Course Starts in Springfield July 16 University of Missouri Extension’s newly developed Certified Master Beekeeper program will debut from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 16 at the Springfield Botanical Center, 2400 S. Scenic Ave., Springfield, Mo. “Basic Beekeeping for Beginners” will focus on the principles of beekeeping. Those principles include history of beekeeping, honeybee biology, plant and pollinator relationship, essential equipment and requirements.

The Missouri Master Beekeeper certification program consists of six levels: Beginner Beekeeper, Apprentice Beekeeper, Journeyman Beekeeper, Junior Master Beekeeper, Master Trainer, and Master Beekeeper. By the end of this first course, individuals will be able to help experienced beekeepers in the management of hives.

Individuals must have one year of experience rearing bees and join a local beekeeping club before taking an exam to move up to the next level. Experienced beekeepers can test up through the first two levels of the program if they have three or more years of experience.

The “Basic Beekeeping for Beginners” class is for any individual interested in learning beekeeping. There is no minimum age, although children age 12 and younger may find examination questions difficult.

The course costs $61 which includes a beekeeping book. Classes are taught by experienced local beekeepers. Payment must be made by July 14 and can be made by check or cash to Greene County Extension, 2400 S. Chrystal Irons Named Director of SBDTC in Springfield to Continue Helping Small Business Chrystal Irons begins May 25 as director of the Missouri State University Small Business and Technology Development Center.

For five years she has served University of Missouri Extension as a small business development specialist which included business trainings in Greene County. Her last day with Christian County Extension was May 19.

In her new position, Irons will manage the staff and work with clients at Missouri State University's Small Business & Technology Development Center. This local center was established in October of 1982 to provide businesses with training, products, and solutions designed to help them become part of Missouri's thriving business sector.

All SBTDC services are focused on providing assistance to businesses and entrepreneurs that will result in positive economic impact. The impact is further defined as job creation, job retention, increased sales, new business creation, business retention, dollar amounts of loans, and increased profitability.

While with MU Extension, Irons marketed, planned and delivered adult educational programs in business subject matters targeted to meet the local needs of business and prospective business people in six counties.

Mid-Year Report on Greene County Mileage Partnership Given to Farm Bureau

Specialist Speaks at District Workshop for Homemakers Group in Springfield

David Burton of University of Missouri Extension reported to the Greene County Farm Bureau Board during May about the success of the two groups farm visit mileage partnership Traditionally light summer and fall have been the strongest time for farm visits in Greene County. This year we have already completed the 16 farm visits for which partnership travel money was used.

Our assistance has also resulted in some positive feedback from farm owners.

“I have been using Extension advice on how to manage a new brome/clover hay field of five acres. I’ve had disease concerns and start-up issues, and MU Extension has been a great source of information. Most recently this included a farm visit from an Extension agent.”

On April 25, Bob Schultheis, MU Extension natural resource engineering specialist, was the luncheon speaker at the Missouri Association of Family and Community Education’s (MAFCE) Southwest District Spring Meeting held in Springfield. Twenty-two members were engaged in the topic “Agriculture's Perceptions, Megatrends and Challenges”, which included discussions on genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), unmanned aerial systems (drones), and Waters of the United States (WOTUS) regulations.

Master Gardeners of Greene County Organic Gardening Academy Symposium Held on May 6 The 2016 Organic Gardening Academy was held May 6 with 20 people in attendance.

The morning session was on “Organic Care of Roses” and was led by Bill Aldrich, curator of the rose garden at the Springfield Botanical Gardens. Bill discussed organic practices he uses to care for roses including mushroom compost, compost tea and resistant varieties. A tour of the rose garden followed the presentation.

The next presentation was by keynote speaker, Ms. Lenora Larson. Larson is a butterfly expert and Master Gardener in the Kansas City area. She spoke on using native plants to create your own butterfly garden and different butterflies native to Missouri.

The afternoon session was led by MU Extension Horticulture Educator Kelly McGowan and was on “Growing Organic Vegetables at Home.”

After the sessions, attendees got a tram tour of the park, tour of the Butterfly House and tour of the Japanese Stroll Garden. The symposium was also a celebration of National Public Gardens Day and the opening day of the Dr. Bill Roston Native Butterfly House for the 2016 season.

The Master Gardener Program is a popular and successful statewide volunteer community-service organization administered through University of Missouri Extension. The organization’s goal is to train gardeners who are willing to share their knowledge with others. Master Gardeners become volunteers of University of Missouri Extension and donate hours for community educational projects in horticulture. Volunteer activities include working with non-profit organizations, maintaining community gardens, conducting workshops, participating in a Master Gardener speakers’ bureau and staffing the Master Gardener “Hotline.” The Master Gardeners of Greene County can boast of over 275 members. Kansas State Extension Comes for a Tour Kansas State University extension specialists toured Springfield Botanical Gardens on May 19, as part of a tour of southwest Missouri agriculture. Kelly McGowan, Robert Balek, and Patrick Byers shared the history of the gardens, discussed the important role volunteers play in the success of the gardens, and conducted a walking tour. The group also toured Southwest Research Center, Mt. Vernon.

Master Gardener Plant Sales Raises Over $12,000 The Master Gardener Plant Sale (shown at right) was a great success. There was a large turnout and a lot of interest in the high-quality plants made available by members of the Master Gardeners of Greene County.

Wet weather might have impacted the crowd but the chapter still raised over $12,000 that will be used to underwrite the costs of public gardens and educational programs in Greene County.

4-H Report for Greene County Gift of Time 2016 Honoree Nominated by Greene County Extension Council Parish Witt and Shooting Sports Since 2005, our nominee has been a committed, outstanding volunteer who has had a longterm record of success coaching youth in the Greene County 4-H Shooting Sports program.

This program uses shooting sports to help young people develop self-confidence, personal discipline, responsibility, teamwork, self-esteem, sound decision-making, concentration, and sportsmanship. The discipline and self-control required for responsible firearms use carries over into many other aspects of life.

Our nominee has served as the instructor and coordinator for the Greene County 4-H Shooting Sports Program. He has trained 16 youth from Greene County that have participated in the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships. During his tenure, there has been four national champions and two runner-ups from Greene County, eight members of two national championship teams (Missouri won in 2011 and 2015), and ten or more individual state champions. For the last eight years, Greene County has had four youth participate on Missouri teams out of the 36 individuals taken to nationals.

Our nominee was instrumental in bringing the National 4-H Western Heritage contest to Missouri in 2015 and again in 2016. He was also instrumental in coaching Autumn Wilson, a Greene County 4-H member who is the first Missouri 4-H female to be named to the state shotgun team. He has also had success in Western Heritage Shooting with a Greene County youth winning that national title in 2016, being runnerup in 2014, and winning the Missouri title in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

“The average 4-H volunteer contributes 100 hours to 4-H annually. Our nominee exceeded 400 volunteer hours a year as a shooting sports

instructor,” said Karla Deaver, 4-H youth development specialist with University of Missouri Extension. “During 2015, he was on the road 32 weekends out of the year with the shooting sports program for events, student coaching or adult weekend training.”

In addition to his county responsibilities as coordinator, our nominee assists with training new 4-H volunteers in shooting sports statewide and also serves as a coach for state shooting sports teams. “Our entire Missouri program would not have had the success it has without him,” said Gerry Snapp, Missouri coordinator for the 4-H youth shooting sports program.

“Our nominee has raised thousands of dollars to purchase equipment and materials for the Greene County youth in this program,” said David Burton, county program director of Greene County Extension.

When asked about the tremendous impact of his volunteer coaching, our nominee downplays his role. “All young people have the desire to be better at something. A coach simply helps them turn that desire into results,” he said. “I believe in this program because as coaches we get to watch some of the best and brightest shine as individuals and achieve goals they set for themselves. I just get to help out a little.”

More About 4-H As the largest out-of-school youth organization in the world, 4-H is open to all boys and girls, ages 5 to18.

Children who are five to seven years old are eligible for 4-H Clover Kids, an introductory program. Youths who are 8 to 18 years of age can select from a variety of 4-H projects and activities that stress social and life skills in areas like decision making, communication, social interaction, civic responsibility and physical skills. Children do not have to live on a farm to join 4-H. Project opportunities include computers, robotics, foods and nutrition, horticulture, large and small animals and more.

The Food Insecurity Story for Missouri Continues to Get Worse A recent report on Food Insecurity in Missouri shows that the situation is growing worse for the state. The Missouri Hunger Atlas 2016, published by the University of Missouri Interdisciplinary Center for Food Security, reports approximately 16.8% of Missourians are “food insecure”. This represents roughly 400,000 households, or one million individuals. Nearly half of this number (7.9%) experience very low food security, or hunger. Noteworthy statistics include the statement that Missouri ranks among the top ten states with the highest percentage of households classified as food insecure or having very low food security.

Further, the report shows that the trend in Missouri is worsening – with the increase in very low food security ranking as the highest in the nation, and the percentage of households experiencing hunger more than doubling over the last decade.

The Missouri Hunger Atlas report also measured how well public programs are doing to meet the needs of Missouri’s Food-Insecure citizens.

The report contains county pages for every county in Missouri, each containing data to provide a picture of Food Insecurity for that county. Additionally, each county map measures “performance” -an assessment of how well that county is doing to meet the needs of their food-insecure citizens.

The USDA defines food security as “access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.” Access to food means having the ability to obtain a variety of affordable, highquality food within each person’s community. The majority of food available for food insecure households to avoid hunger comes through private and public assistance programs, delivered through community partners. This presents a role for communities to engage in promoting Community Food Security, which USDA defines as “a prevention-

The report points out that Food Insecurity costs all of us. The economic, social, physical and psychological impacts include work absenteeism, increased health care expenditures, and a higher demand for public and social services.

Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of food insecurity, with the potential for longterm consequences. Food insecure children are more vulnerable to stunted development, poor health, learning difficulties, and increased behavioral challenges.

A goal of the Missouri Hunger Atlas is to raise awareness across Missouri concerning the scope of food insecurity and hunger in their own communities. This comprehensive report can be used to guide decision makers in policy and program development in order to improve Food Security for their fellow Missourians. Envisioning the Future of C-Street in Springfield The Hammons School of Architecture’s Center for Community Studies (CCS) led a visioning exercise in February to help define the future of 3.5 acres of land on Commercial Street currently owned by The Kitchen, Inc. CCS students and faculty members helped stakeholders envision conceptual ideas for renewal of the site during an intensive workshop, which was open to the public. Drury architecture students will study options for redevelopment and present design possibilities to stakeholders in the coming months.

The study will center on The Missouri Hotel, originally opened as the Greene Tavern Hotel in April 1930. With The Kitchen’s decision to sell its Commercial Street properties and relocate, the property along Commercial Street from Benton to Jefferson Avenue, and south along Jefferson for a block and a half, is on the market.

Drury’s CCS is the interdisciplinary research and academic outreach component of the Hammons School of Architecture. The center’s mission is to assist the regional com-

Human Development Specialist Wardlow Now Certified to Facilitate Gottman Relationship Trainings in the Community The Gottman Institute is an internationally renowned organization dedicated to building strong relationships and repairing troubled ones. The materials are based on the research and clinical methodology of Drs. John and Julie Gottman who, through a global network teach practical skills for couples and parents that help build intimacy and trust.

“I took the training and am now certified to facilitate the Gottman workshops in our communities. The teaching approach is to support and repair troubled marriages and committed relationships, and to help strengthen happy ones,” said Renette Wardlow, human development specialist with Univer- Renette Wardlow sity of Missouri Extension.

Donors Help Extension Reaps Benefits of “Give Ozarks” The Greene County Extension Council participated in the second Give Ozarks 24-hour online day of giving on May 3, 2016.

Supporters were asked to make online donations in support of local extension programming in youth, nutrition, horticulture and agriculture.

The Greene County Extension Council finished the day with $7,929.40 in donations for the Greene County Extension Council Education Fund.

“It was a good day and worth the time and investment that staff and volunteers put in to promote it. Those new funds are essential to maintaining our programs and necessary for us to meet our fundraising goal,” said David Burton, county program director for Greene County Extension.
