Greene County Friends Campaign Invites Public to Fund Office Needs The 2016 “Friends of Greene County Extension Campaign” is underway. Annually, the "Friends of Greene County Extension" fundraising campaign raises about $25,000 toward the operation of the Greene County Extension office. Funds do not go toward salaries of MU Extension specialists. Rather, donations help fund the administrative overhead necessary to offer affordable programs to the community and to maintain a publicly accessible office. “This year, the extension council and extension specialists outlined some items that could be sponsored to help personalize the request being made of donors,” said Burton. With an individual donation, supporters can help fund a month's supply of copy paper for the office ($50), Internet access in the office for a month (for $75), the office monthly phone bill (for $100), postage for a month (for $125), monthly publications for the community (for $175), our total office operations for a day (for $250), or even our office operations for a week (for $1200). Human Development Specialist To Help Divorced Parents, Educational Programs Should Focus on Addressing Financial and Parenting Barriers Prior research has shown that cooperative co -parenting after divorce is often best for children’s well-being. To promote this, more than half of America’s courts require some type of education for divorcing parents to help them establish workable co-parenting plans. Now, a new study from the University of Missouri shows that concerns about co-parenting differ by gender, impacting the ability of divorced parents to work together in supporting their children’s development. By understanding the implications of these concerns, better programs for divorcing parents can be developed that can have a positive impact on the overall health of the children involved. “We know that cooperative co-parenting is the best bet for children of divorce,” said Renettte Wardlow, human development specialist with MU Extension. “However, coparenting plans often can be derailed by parental conflict and concerns. Our question as researchers was how concerns differed between mothers and fathers, so we could use that information to improve co-parental education programs.” According to this research, fathers’ parenting behaviors were most affected by financial and legal concerns, especially regarding child support payments perceived as unjust or excessive. They

found that mothers’ coparenting, on the other hand, were more influenced by concerns about the mental instability and parental fitness of their exspouses. Although both parents also reported logistical concerns—for example, the fear that distance and demanding work schedules would Renette Wardlow Human Development prohibit them from wardlowr@missouri.edu visiting their child— these concerns had no impact on the reported behaviors of either parent. Wardlow suggests that family professionals could help couples overcome economic and legal concerns through increased career-training or teaching mothers to better communicate financial needs. Fathers may be more willing to accept paying child support when they understand how payments benefit their children, and when they themselves are more financially secure. To counteract mothers’ concerns about parental fitness, Family professionals focus on helping fathers develop the skills they need to be effective parents when they are alone with their children, and to take steps to actively demonstrate this capability to their ex-spouse. To reduce children’s exposure to conflict, however, in some situations it may be necessary to suggest reducing contact between ex-spouses.

To learn more about local programs impacting children and families, contact Human Development Specialist Renette Wardlow at (417) 881-8909 or by email at wardlowr@missouri.edu.

Housing and Urban Development Specialist

“Senior CoHousing” Offers Life in a Close Community A new idea called "Senior Cohousing" is beginning to emerge in the United States as a housing option for the older adults. This new approach allows residents to design and run their community, primarily by consensus. Their focus is on creating small, close-knit villages where residents build bonds and know everyone’s name. The concept began in Denmark in the 1960’s as multi-generational cohousing. It is now gaining popularity in Europe and the U.S. When adapted to senior living, this pattern builds on independent living, creates a fuller lifestyle, fosters interdependence of neighbors and can extend life expectancy. The result is a cross between condominium and traditional neighborhood, where resi-

dents join in a partnership to help each other, while living in their own home. These walkable, mini-villages are suited to both rural and urban settings where residents own their own homes according to Barber. However, Jeff Barber this new concept creHousing and design ates areas where resi- barberj@missouri.edu dents can gather in common areas to socialize, share meals, garden or participate in other activities. This approach allows a living arrangement that can be more dignified than assisted living or a nursing home.

Jeff Barber is working with leaders in area communities and students at Drury to develop projects and visioning documents that improve living and expand economic options.
