NOTHING VENTURED NOTHING GAINED
BIKE KINGDOM
The Alps are truly ushering in a new kingdom of sorts. After the king of cross country bikers, Nino Schurter, was already crowned here several times as World Cup Winner and World Cup Champion, three destinations in the Graubünden canton in eastern Switzerland – Lenzerheide, Arosa and Chur – have united into what is known as the Bike Kingdom.
Today this alpine setting is the sought-after playground of the fearless knights on their aluminium and carbon-fibre horses, in an area covering 900 km of single trails.
Its open bike policy has always made Graubünden a bikers’ paradise. Here hiking and forestry trails can be cycled on! Opening up the area to cyclists is the result of a dozen cableways and chairlifts that make countless combinations possible. It is also the result of a strategy making cyclists the focal point of developing the area into a summer destination. The area has done it more proactively than most other alpine destinations have dared to, to date.
Bikers in every category now stand to benefit from the range of adventures and offers. There are even bike schools starting from the age of three, all the way through to offers entailing guided tours for the pros. Bike hotels, bike shops, rentals and workshops only serve to round off the endless choices.
The cableways and chairlifts giving access to six regions are open from June until 25th October: Bear Mountains (Arosa), Red Peak (East Lenzerheide), Western Summits (West Lenzerheide), Southern Delights (in the direction of Albula Valley), Steep Trees (Parpan to Chur) and Capital (Chur). The recently-launched Bike Kingdom APP not only facilitates the digital planning of tours, but plays host to a number of challenges, the successful contesting of which is rewarded royally.
