THE CULINARY POET

In the heart of Austria’s Zillertal Alps is this little jewel that calls itself Hotel Almhof Roswitha.

From Hippach, a winding road takes guests up to the alpine meadows to a height of 1400 m leaving behind the sounds of the valley. Silence is all around – this location is one to gaze at, smell, taste and feel, literally so, with Joseph taking us on a hike of the area’s herbal repertoire. But that’s only the beginning. In the kitchen he conjures up exciting creations using the variety of offerings gleaned from the great outdoors. A lot of passion goes into his teas, oils, tinctures and brandies, as well as soaps, fragrances and heating pads!

What is fascinating are the entirely unexpected luxury chalets in a dream natural setting! From a slightly crazy idea, the brainchild of mountain farmers Sepp, Rudi and Michl emerged the reality of the chalets in 2016 – the three of them devising them hands-on. Each one is unique and boasts anything but classical forms. Common to all is the use of regional materials like stone, arolla pine, spruce wood and larch wood, as well as sheep’s wool for insulation. As is to be expected, the 40 kW of electricity the establishment is supplied with comes from a photovoltaic installation.

The mountains here are literally lived: Talks about our natural habitat and breathing space for relaxation deliver the creative stimuli for alpine therapies with a difference. One of the nicest things about Hotel Almhof Roswitha is the enjoyment of the private sauna in front of the fireplace, whilst letting one’s gaze drift across the mountains. In the morning guests get to look forward to their dedicated breakfast basket with fragrant fresh rolls (plus whole grain bread, regional butter as well as homemade jams).

The perfect rejuvenation spot, its hosts are knowledgeable, fun, attentive and direct – all in all what you get here is an inspiration for life!
