Monthly Star

When we hear the word SIGMA, most of us think of our boring math classes. Now, this word is going to give you a whole new feeling. It’s the name of a male group. SIGMA (Σ) is a Greek symbol that means “sum.” This group wants to remind fans that they are displaying the sum talent of three boys, so they call themselves SIGMA. Judy became famous on the show One Million Star. He is good at both singing and dancing. Jett is a smart boy. He studies at National Tsing Hua University. He really enjoys performing on stage. Tommy is passionate* about dancing, and feels very lucky to be a member of SIGMA. The name SIGMA describes the group’s music perfectly. It’s the sum of many different styles. In their songs, the group uses words that young people also use. They hope that their songs express the feelings of Taiwan’s young generation.* passionate [ `p1]4n6t ] adj. 熱情的 generation [ %d.5n4`re]4n ] n. 世代

1. Being a good friend is . . . 首先,可將「Be a good friend」視為這個句子的主詞,再 來必須把動詞 be 改成動名詞(Being)或不定詞(To be) 才正確。

4. trust vs. believe trust 「

• Listening to music is my favorite hobby. = To listen to music is my favorite hobby.

= Talking to my teacher makes me nervous.

2. How can you be a good friend? 「疑問詞(如 what/how/where/when . . .)+不定詞」形 成「名詞片語」,如 how to get there「如何到那裡」,what to buy「要買什麼」,通常置於句尾當受詞用。 How can you be a good friend?

• Where does Amy go to school?

• I don’t know which way to go.

This is the story of a cook and her darning needle. Every day the needle admired herself. She smiled and thought, “Look at how slender1 and beautiful I am!” The needle did not like the cook’s fingers. They were so ugly! “You must be gentle with me,” she said to them. “I am so delicate* and pretty.” However, the cook’s foolish2 fingers were too clumsy.* They broke the needle into two pieces! The cook fixed the needle, and pinned3 it to her blouse.4 “Of course the cook wants to keep me,” thought the needle. “After all, I am one of a kind!”

Japan’s Hidden Secrets

When we think of Japan, most of us imagine crowded cities and giant skyscrapers.* Japan is famous for its technology and fashion. However, few people are curious about Japan’s natural beauty. If you leave Japan’s cities and begin to explore,1 you’re sure to find some nice surprises. Japan has high mountains, huge forests, and wild animals. In the north, temperatures drop to below zero. Here, eagles follow fishing boats. They eat fish that fall from the boats’ nets. Brown bears live near the east coast. Some of these giants weigh2 over 600 kilograms. Their claws* are 12 centimeters3 long. They hunt deer and fish.

54

Japan also has soldier crabs, mongoose, and deadly snakes. One of the most dangerous snakes is the pit viper. Many of these animals live very close to Japanese cities. In Japan, pollution4 has caused very serious problems. However, things are changing. Japan now has laws5 that protect nature. As a result,6 the animal population is growing again. For example, 100 years ago, only 33 red crown cranes were left in Japan. Now there are more than 1,000. Japan is a good example for the rest of the world. If we work hard, we can repair and protect the environment.
