That man was lying through his teeth when he said he didn’t take the money.

lie through (one’s) teeth

• Carol said that she was telling the truth, but she is lying through her teeth.

The company is going to close, so a lot of people are jumping ship.

• George hates his job, so he wants to jump ship.

A: We have another big problem.

B: Oh no! Now what?

Now what?

• A: We’re lost!

B: We don’t have a map. Now what?

Vincent

lyrics [ `l6r6ks ] n. mood [ mud ] n. 36

Corrections 1 feel calm and relaxed feel • I feel more relaxed when you are around.

Annie’s Mailbox

• Penny’s English is getting better. • The watch is more expensive than the dress.

4 watch vs. see

• Just relax. Everything is going to be fine.

• Connie enjoyed a relaxing afternoon.

watch [ w3t] ] v.

see [ si ] v.

Arthur likes to watch talk shows.

Bruce sees a cockroach over there.

• I have seven brothers and sisters. Most of us

Did you watch the baseball game last night?

2 Most of them have no lyrics.

work in Taipei.

• They are going to the supermarket later.

I saw many famous people at the party.

3 feel better 形容詞比較級的規則如下: 直接在字尾 + er: long → longer, tall → taller, old → older 字尾為 e 時直接 + r: 單音節 nice → nicer, cute → cuter, large → larger 為「子音 + 短母音 + 子音」時,重複字尾 + er: fat → fatter, big → bigger, hot → hotter

5 Listening to soft music is my hobby. Listening to soft music is my hobby. • Doing the same thing every day is very boring. • Asking questions helps you learn more.

more + 形容詞: interesting → more interesting, beautiful → more beautiful 字尾為「子音 + y」,去 y + ier: happy → happier, busy → busier, heavy → heavier

*常見的形容詞不規則變化有:good → better、 bad → worse、many/much → more 等。

When you’re walking around the 10-hectare campus and you hear a group of students conversing in fluent English, don’t think you’ve entered an American school. And if you spot a brawny, stern-faced man instructing students on how to conduct themselves, don’t think you’ve happened upon a military academy. This is Pingchen City’s Liu He Junior High School, and that stern-faced instructor is none other than Teacher Tommy, one of the most sought-after teachers in northern Taiwan. Those students with the excellent English you heard are the members of the English Conversation & Composition Club (EC3), winners of the 2013 National English Drama Competition.

Three years ago, Liu He principal Su Jingjin established EC3 and spared no effort in recruiting Teacher Tommy to lead the class. This group of carefully selected students underwent two and a half months of rigorous practice. In addition to daily rehearsals, the group practiced on weekends and even during Lunar New Year, following Tommy’s intense pace without a hint of remiss. The students stated that last year’s competition, their first in fact, yielded less than ideal results. This year their singular goal was to take home the crown, and each student possessed within him or herself an absolute resolve to win.

Born in Germany and raised in Canada and South Africa, Tommy has taught English for 20 years in Taiwan, the land he now loves dearly. He says what he really cares about is not whether students learn English through drama but rather their gaining an education in character cultivation. He noticed that students were very attached to their cellphones, thumbing away on them throughout the day. This led him to pen a humorous play based on his observations of teenagers entitled The Future Is in Your Hands. Perhaps due to his German heritage, which is grounded in strict discipline, Tommy is utterly strict and meticulous to a fault when leading rehearsals. He is a true perfectionist. He first spends a semester observing students’ character traits and strong points and then assigns character roles accordingly. During rehearsals, Tommy constantly emphasizes the following key points to his students.

 Tommy

 2013 champion

1. Face your fears: Face the things you fear and tackle them head on. 2. Team collaboration: Our first priority is teamwork, not individual performances. 3. The three fundamentals: animated gestures, exaggerated expressions and heightened vocalization. 4. Watch plenty of movies: The teacher requires students to watch the films of Jim Carrey and other comedic actors. 5. Take care of problems when they arise. Don’t let them leave rehearsal.

the female lead’s voice returned just five minutes before the competition. Tommy stated, “Although we believe in miracles, we don’t just wait for them to come. These kids did not let up in their determination and this is what created the miracle.”

The Future Is in Your Hands(掌握自己的未來)。

Apart from this, Tommy mentioned that thoroughly reading the script is of utmost importance. When students are reading their scripts, Tommy corrects their pronunciation and intonation while making sure their facial expressions and gestures accord with the subject matter. Even strict rehearsals, however, cannot prevent the unpredictable from occurring. Five days before the competition, for example, the female lead suddenly lost her voice, and the male lead, Lin Dahe, developed an infection (cellulitis) in his right foot that required surgery. Tommy had to quickly replace Lin with a student named Jiang Yaojie, who learned his part in three hectic days of preparation. Miraculously,

When the name of the champion was revealed, Tommy screamed at the top of his lungs, as if to release all the pressure that had been built over the previous few days. His students were in even more of a frenzy, filling the air with shouts of joy. After receiving the prize, Tommy and his team of assistants could not hold back their tears, for they realized that all the doubts concerning their tremendous investments of time into these seemingly trivial drama competitions would now be quieted. They would surely now gain the acknowledgment and support of parents and teachers alike. Thus, EC3 chalked up a double-win with this competition. Tommy concluded, “This experience is itself a demonstration of the idea behind ‘The Future Is in Our Hands’ because these students took it upon themselves to keep the legacy of EC3 alive and moving forward.” 55
