Rainie thinks that happiness doesn’t have to come from romance.* She grew up in a singleparent family. Her father wasn’t there for her, so her mother gave her twice the love and support.* Rainie’s mother gave her a happy childhood,* and Rainie is still happy today. Rainie once said, “Sometimes happiness comes from being content. As long as you’re content with what you have, happiness will be all around you.” This positive* attitude* helped Rainie when she was a poor child, and it still helps her today. Not everyone was born with a perfect life. But we can always be happy if we want to be. That is what Rainie teaches us.

Lots of people can play instruments, but not many know how to beat box. When you beat box, you turn your mouth1 into an instrument. If a beatboxer is new, he or she might only be able to sound like a drum. When you hear 2 the best beatboxers, you might think that you’re listening to a radio 3 instead of* a person. Beatboxing isn’t as popular as the guitar or the piano, but it’s getting bigger. Here’s something you might not believe: some people can beat box and sing4 at the same time!

• Vera did her best to do well in the play. • The plan sounds good.

4. Having good scores is what students want. Having good scores is what students want. • Studying abroad is not easy. • Writing a novel takes a long time.

5. 助動詞 must 的用法 2. in class 英文中並無 at class 的說法,欲表示「在課堂上、上課中」 要說 in class, class 前面不需加冠詞。另一常見的介系詞 片語為 at home「在家」,不能說成 at the home 或 in home。 • Lucy fell asleep in class.

Everyone knows that they must work hard. • You must pay your rent before October first. • You must not steal from other people.

• Shelly surfed the Internet at home this

afternoon.

3. I will write down everything my teacher says. every things • Tracy remembers everything from her vacation. • There is something in my eye.

In 1588, England won a very important battle.* The queen wanted to celebrate,3 so she ate a goose.4 That was the first Thanksgiving. Is the story true? Nobody knows. When British people moved to America, they wanted to keep the tradition going, but there weren’t enough geese. There were plenty of turkeys, so they ate those. Think About It!

{

I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they, that,

this, those, these 受格代名詞:me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them,

that, this, those, these

• Men are usually taller than women. • Men’s clothes are usually simpler than women’s

clothes.

5. 正確答案為:(D) A hold on 稍後;稍等 Just hold on for five more minutes.

(A) those、(C) these 和 (D) them 都是用來代替複 數可數名詞,所以不選。

B fall down 跌倒 The old man fell down. Let’s help him up.

• A: Is that your juice?

C find out 發現 Carmen found out that her purse was missing.

B: Yes, I drink it every day. • A: Where are my French fries?

B: Sorry. I ate them all!

D depend on 視……而定 The price of the washing machine depends on its functions. 47

Do you like Japanese food? For most Taiwanese people, the answer is “Yes!” You can find all different kinds of Japanese restaurants in Taiwan. Some people put Japanese food into two classes:1 A and B. Class A is for fancier* Japanese food. In Class A restaurants, you can have the world’s best sashimi (生魚片). Every morning, chefs* from those restaurants go to markets2 and buy fresh fish. They check every fish first, and only pick the best ones. Kaiseki (懷石料理) is also a Class A food. When chefs make Kaiseki food, they make sure that the colors of the plate3 match* the colors of the food. Every part of the meal must look nice. Kaiseki isn’t just food. It’s art. It’s more dangerous than we can imagine.1 Some parts of it are more than 5,000°C. It’s got mountains, strange animals, huge caves, 2 and rivers of lava. It has bats, bugs, and strange white worms called “devil worms.” If you went to this place, you would die right away. This sounds like something from science fiction, but it’s the world under your feet right now. The world’s deepest mine* is in South Africa. It’s 3.9 kilometers below Earth’s surface.* We can’t go much deeper than that. If we could keep going down, however, we would see some amazing things. We would see beautiful crystals* that are bigger than buses. We would learn more about where our most important materials* come from. We would find coal, oil, salt, gold, and diamonds.3 We would also see how volcanoes and earthquakes are created.4 E a r t h ’s c o r e i s a b o u t 3 , 0 0 0 kilometers below us. The core of Earth is bigger than the moon. It’s a beautiful, hot, and scary place. In fact, it’s so hot that it glows.5 That heat makes Earth spin.6 Humans will never be able to visit the core, but without it, life on Earth would not exist.
