Gathering of Goblins at Goodwood Motor Circuit 2017

Welcome Welcome to the Gathering of Goblins at Goodwood Motor Circuit. The Gathering of Goblins is a celebration of another IET Formula Goblin Season, where teams from far and wide travel to Goodwood to compete against each other, at the largest IET Formula Goblin event of the year. This year we are extremely pleased to welcome two Goblin teams from China, and a team from Spain to the Gathering of Goblins. 2017 saw rapid growth of the IET Formula Goblin project in particular areas, due to the hard work of our ambassadors, meaning that we were able to add two fantastic additional events to the calendar this year at Scottow Enterprise Park (Norfolk) and Croft Motor Circuit (North Yorkshire). As a charity, Greenpower relies on significant support from many hundreds of volunteers, organisations and supporters who contribute unbelievable amounts of their time and resources. This is all because we share the same vision of inspiring our young participants about engineering subjects and sustainability. We are extremely grateful to our main supporters, Siemens, The IET, Silverline and BMW i along with many other organisations for the support they provide to us as an organisation, which allows us to run a full 35 event race calendar over our three different categories. Good luck to all of the teams that will be participating at the 2017 Gathering of Goblins; we’re looking forward to seeing you at Goodwood!

Introducing Greenpower At Greenpower Education Trust we give young people an exciting, real life challenge with a proven track record in sparking an interest in engineering. The challenge – to design, build and race an electric car, harnesses the excitement of motorsport to inspire young people to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) studies. • We work with over 600 schools throughout the UK and run 35 regional events and an International Final every year. • More than 10,000 students take part each year, from primary school through to university.

Greenpower is helping to address the skills gap the UK faces in engineering and is licensed in various countries worldwide, highlighting to participants the global nature of the industry.

IET Formula 24 Ages 11-16

“The organisation was first rate, the staff were all very approachable and helpful and the atmosphere was very good indeed. It was, in fact, inspirational without being restrictive.” Paul March, Poole Grammar School

Teams of students design and build their own IET Formula 24 Kit Car and compete at regional events and the International Final held at Rockingham Motor Speedway. IET Formula 24 is geared towards schools but we welcome private entries and teams from youth groups and engineering clubs.

IET Formula Goblin Ages 9 – 11

The IET Formula Goblin is an electric kit car designed for young people to build and race at venues such as Goodwood. A typical build takes 15 hours and the Goblin can be dismantled and rebuilt each year with a new team of children. The Goblin Kit Car is aimed at 9 to 11 year-olds and is ideal for schools and community groups. The kit comes with easy to follow instructions and the build requires only simple hand tools. Schools can run the project as part of the design and technology or science curriculum. Teams design and create their own bodywork once the kit is assembled. School teams are invited to participate in Greenpower events held throughout the UK. “We have enjoyed building the car this year and it was great to compete against other schools’ cars in Washington. As result of the project we now know more about engineering, working together as a team, listening to others and sharing ideas.” Goblin Team Members, Cleadon Academy, Sunderland

IET Formula 24 gives 11 – 16 year-olds the opportunity to design, build and race an electric car on some of the UK’s top motor circuits.

“It was such a fantastic event for the pupils to take part in and something that made me immensely proud as a teacher.” Alan Tilley, Southbrook Special School, Devon

IET Formula 24+ Ages 16 – 25

Greenpower boosts interest and career opportunities in Science, Technology and Engineering by enabling 16 – 25 year olds to design, build and race an electric IET Formula 24+ Kit Car. Teams take part in the design and building of the car, race days and the IET Formula 24+ Championship. IET Formula 24+ is aimed at sixth forms, colleges, universities and apprenticeship schemes but we also welcome private entries and teams from youth groups and engineering clubs. “Having my involvement in Greenpower on my CV when I applied for university and placements really helped me stand out. The contacts I made at Greenpower also helped me to arrange my work placement during my degree” Nikki Jones, IET Formula 24+ participant

Case Study Freshford Primary School The response to the letters was absolutely incredible, with a total of £5,392 finally being raised... Freshford Primary’s after school engineering club has been entering the First Lego League robotics competition for a couple of years now, but as this competition only runs for the Autumn term we were looking for a new challenge for the other two terms, and fortunately noticed a second hand Goblin kit available from another local school. The year 5 engineers were very excited to be entering two different STEM competitions in one year. When the kit arrived the team eagerly started construction and had the chassis assembled fairly quickly, and so attention then moved on to the materials for the bodywork. After carefully weighing various materials the team decided on a reflective road sign fabric sourced from the local recycling scrap store. Not only was it much lighter than correx it glistened in the sun too! One hiccup followed - after finishing the build we found we could not get the Goblin out of the school hall door and so had to remove the roll bar again! As the kit was second hand we had no idea about the state of the batteries, so the team were asked to raise £200 to pay for new batteries and the helmet. A session selling home made lemonade to local ramblers raised £60 and then each team member wrote 4 letters to local companies for sponsorship. The response to the letters was absolutely incredible, with a total of £5,392 finally being raised! For many of the children this was the first time they had written a ‘formal’ letter, and almost all of the sponsors noted how nice it was to receive a hand written child’s letter, in the post, rather than an email! One of the generous sponsors, J Haynes (CEO of Haynes publishing group) came in to visit and was delighted to support such “a wonderfully enthusiastic group of young people”. So with two brand new G2 Goblins ordered Freshford Primary will be able to triple the number of students involved next year, and the school has also been able to purchase CAD software and a vinyl cutter to enhance general CAD/ CAM teaching in the school (as well as cutting vinyl designs to decorate the Goblin!). The students thoroughly enjoyed their first event at Renishaw New Mills in May and came away with a couple of trophies. However the videos also showed our reaction to the start flag dropping were sometimes quite slow, so ‘Team FreshFord’ have now been practising really hard for the Goodwood Gathering!

Case Study St Faith’s Primary School ‘Once a Goblin, always a Goblin’ St Faith’s have been building and racing Goblin cars since 2013. Currently 14 children from Years 5 and 6 meet once a week and in the school holidays when necessary, to design, build and maintain our two race cars supported by staff from our Engineering department. The current cohort of pupils were selected by senior staff as those most likely to benefit from the experience. Pupils start their Goblin experience in Year 5 and most carry on to Year 6. All members of the team rotate through all aspects of the project from building the newest car to maintaining the older one and working on the portfolio, all teams have been fully involved in the body work on the car. On race days the Year 6 members are designated as team leaders. Our biggest ambition for the coming year is to find an eco-friendlier bodywork material. We also wish to develop our portfolio skills further and aim to approach potential sponsors for additional investments. Our saying, ‘Once a Goblin, always a Goblin’ resonates when we attend the Cambridge Science festival with some of our Year 7 ex-Goblins, we’d love to keep them forever but unfortunately they have to move on.
