Foreword 2017 has been another great year in Greenpower’s Extraordinary Journey, seeing more teams participating than ever before in more events, across more countries, and importantly more young people globally getting involved in designing, building and racing electric cars and being inspired by Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths as a result. We also successfully concluded a major project in the Humber region, kindly funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company and Green Port Hull, to create Greenpower teams in over 60 schools and youth groups, supported by over 40 employers from across the region. The project proved that Greenpower provides the perfect platform for young people to work with employers, giving positive inspiration about the world of work and meaningful dialogue about careers in industry. This will actually be my last International Final as Chief Executive at Greenpower. I went to work for Greenpower part-time when I left school in 2003, and became so hooked I’m still here 14 years on. It’s time for a complete change of career direction for me and I’m off to work in a very different industry. It’s been a really tough decision to leave Greenpower, but also an exciting one for me personally, and a reminder to grasp opportunities when they arise. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those organisations and individuals who have been part of Greenpower’s Extraordinary Journey, and I very much hope you will all stay involved for many years to come. Greenpower will continue to grow, develop and inspire in the very safe hands of the brilliant team here, and I look forward to keeping in touch with progress and all the inspirational people I’ve met over the years. Case Study

Team Xtreme Spark “...It has helped to increase their confidence, raise aspirations and develop their skills in engineering. The team have overcome various challenges along the way...” A group of Young Carers from Hull have explored the world of Engineering by participating in Project Blyth, run by Greenpower Education Trust. The University of Hull Schools and Colleges Liaison Service, in partnership with Barnardo’s Hull Young Carers and Sibling Support Service, assembled a team of 10 young people, between the ages of 11 – 16, who have caring responsibilities for a family member. The team members chose to participate for a variety of reasons. Mark (16) explained, “I got involved with the green power project because I have always been interested in engineering and when I was invited to take part, I said yes immediately. I was hoping to learn about what tools and car parts are and what they are used for as well as scientific reasons for why the car might or might not work”

because we all put our ideas together and to catch everybody’s attention with our logo.” The group were mentored by Brian Houston, an Academic Specialist in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hull, and University undergraduate Student Ambassadors, including Sam Houlton, a 3rd year Mechanical Engineering Student. The group found the mentors extremely helpful. Aston (11) stated why he was happy to have Brian as a mentor; “I’m so glad that he was our mentor because he was a big help to the group. He was very patient. I was glad Sam was involved because even when I felt down he gave me the support to carry on.”

The team held a design day, where they had to research and come up with a design they all agreed on. Harvey (14) said, “My team’s biggest strengths were teamwork. We all had to work together to design our car. We all had different ideas but we had to find a way to include them all. We worked together to build the car”. The team name, Xtreme Spark, was born and they had three build days on which to put the car together, paint the panels and fundraise for extra equipment. The group decided to go with a lightning bolt theme, as PoppieMarie (14) explains; “We all chose our final design to be a lightning bolts 50

As a group, we also had support from East Yorkshire Coaches and W Campbell & Son Ltd in Hull, who provided our panels, Sign Services UK Ltd who helped print the team logo, and Savoy Tyres in Hull who provided some of the tools we needed to complete the build. Getting to race the car at the KCOM Stadium on the 16th July was a highlight for all the team and they have thoroughly enjoyed the design and build process. It has helped to increase their confidence, raise aspirations and develop their skills in engineering. The team have overcome various challenges along the way and are very proud of themselves for taking part in what has been an invaluable opportunity. Jayden (12) said, “This has been a great experience and I would like to do this again” and Mark stated, “I feel extremely proud of this achievement and I hope to be able to do something like this in the future.” The team are now looking forward to taking part in the International Kit Car Final in October 2017.

Flags YELLOW FLAG

Indicates that there is a hazard ahead, e.g. stationary car/s or recovery vehicle. Be extra careful, slow down, and only overtake other cars if there is a significant speed differential. Drivers deemed to be overtaking dangerously under yellow flags will be penalised.

RED FLAG

This means that the session is stopped until further notice. All drivers will slow immediately and continue slowly around the circuit until indicated to stop. Remain in the vehicle unless otherwise instructed.

CHEQUERED FLAG

Each vehicle will finish the race when it first crosses the timing point after the race duration measured from the first time the union flag drops at the start of the race. As cars cross the start line after they have finished they will be presented with a static chequered flag. The winning car will be presented with a waved chequered flag.

BLACK FLAG

A black flag pointed at your car indicates that you should enter the pitlane immediately, either for a Sin Bin penalty or because something is wrong with your car.

The AQA Greenpower Award is open to all IET Formula Goblin and IET Formula 24 teams. Learners can claim up to three units each and receive a certificate for each successfully completed unit once Greenpower has verified and approved the claims. OCR have produced a guide giving you an overview of how you could holistically deliver a range of units from Cambridge Technicals in Engineering Level 3 (Electrical and Electronic Engineering pathway) in conjunction with aspects of the Greenpower IET Formula 24+ class competition.

Students undertaking the Industrial Cadets Silver Award need to produce a portfolio to evidence their Greenpower participation and demonstrate that they have met the criteria for the programme.

Team Forget Fossil – All Ireland Champions! “...It is hard to explain how rewarding being involved in the F24 Kitcar project can be. There are many valuable experiences our pupils have had in the past year...” Ballyclare Secondary School Following on from last year’s success, six pupils from Ballyclare Secondary School competed in the Greenpower Educational Trust’s F24 Electric Kit Car, Northern Ireland Regional Final at Kirkistown on Saturday 10th June. They had a lot to live up to given that the 2016 team had won the ‘Spirit of Greenpower’ award at the International final the previous year. In the end, 2017 was definitely one to be remembered, as the new team became the ‘All Ireland Champions’ by winning both races and completing over 32 miles; a personal best for Ballyclare Secondary School. This was such a great achievement given this is only the third year the school has competed in this competition. It is hard to explain how rewarding being involved in the F24 Kitcar project can be. There are many valuable experiences our pupils have had in the past year. The team study GCSE Technology and Design, Resistant Materials. Although Electronics is part of the core it is not the main focus of the course, rather students study Materials, Tools and Processes as well as an emphasis on good Design. The 2017 team, using their course knowledge set about trying to improve the existing Forget Fossil 2016 car without having to dive too deep into the electronics. The team recognized that the current chassis material, Aluminium, was a perfect choice with its strength to weight ratio, so how were they to improve upon it? The simple answer the team came up with was to reduce the amount used. This would obviously reduce the overall weight of the chassis and, therefore, reduce the load being 70

put onto the batteries. By reading through all the rules carefully, the team managed to shave 90mm off the overall width and 200mm off the length. They were also able to reduce the height by 80mm. The making of the reduced chassis presented a wealth of experiences. The photos show some of the processes the pupils got to experience first hand in the making of their new chassis. By using a better design, the pupils were able to enclose the back wheels and along with the reduced width, were able to improve the aerodynamics of the car quite considerably. This resulted in much better speeds, faster

times as well improving the battery life. The team have also learnt lots of other important life skills such as: commitment, perseverance, team work and good interpersonal skills as a result of the F24 project. One example of how the pupils tested their interpersonal skills was communicating with companies to help secure sponsorship for the team. The pupils benefited from talking to adults, presenting ideas, listening to advice as well as receiving generous sponsorship from: Aalco, TRFastenings, Chain Reaction, Dawsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Engineering, Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Engineering, J Harkness, Alistair Moore Welding and Nissan Charles Hurst. The pupils very much appreciate all the help the companies have given them. The team are really looking forward to competing at the International Final in October. Good luck everyone.

Team Lion Racing - Brazil “...Throughout the last 4 months, the team managed to achieve tasks once believed impossible...” St Pauls School Lion Racing is composed by 12 inspired and dedicated members that take pride in their work and will do as much as possible to see improvements and exceptional results in everything they do. Coming from a significant position from last year’s race, the team created its new and improved car named “Lion 2”. The team believes that this completely new car, designed for perfection by our engineering team, may put us in the top 10 position. Throughout the last 4 months, the team managed to achieve tasks once believed impossible, improving the car from every aspect, including speed, aerodynamics, design and battery usage. Trial and error was crucial for every department involved. From the the business team to the engineering team, the project faced lots of challenges and barriers, that without persistency and trials, the final product wouldn’t be possible. Each department was crucial in the creation of the car. The business team managed to minimise cost while maximising quality, whilst the engineering team managed to minimise time while maximising efficiency. As the team became more familiar with the car and their preassigned tasks, we managed to learn from each other and help with the creation of the car as whole. The final product is a reflection of the teams hard word and team spirit, which we believe that will take us towards success.

Case Study

Nathaniel Olson “...The overall concept was carried over from the previous car, but every aspect was developed and refined to significantly reduce the weight, size and aerodynamic drag.” My name is Nathaniel Olson, I am 20 years old, and currently working at Red Bull F1 Racing on an industrial student placement. This is a part of a 4-year degree in Motorsport Engineering I’m currently undertaking at Coventry University. Back in 2011, I got involved in our school’s Greenpower club when it was just starting out and we started our first car building it from scratch and racing it later that year in Cornwall. It took us until the second year to get to the National Final but due to technical issues, we finished 65th. We learnt a lot from those first two years of racing and I decided to design and build our next chassis as my final project in GCSE Resistant Materials, using all the knowledge we gained from the first car. The debut of Saracens Racer went very well at Newquay, qualifying for the National Final in its very first heat, despite punctures, under-gearing and using the wrong batteries. Later in the year we were running high as 9th in the Final before running into batteries issues. This was a big learning experience for me and in the following year, I applied this knowledge to designing and building my first complete car as part of my BTEC Engineering final project at Truro College. Stealth made its debut at Merryfield was very encouraging, coming 6th in F24+, but after only 2 races I decided to modify it in order to improve its performance. Continuous development and improvement is one of most important aspects of Greenpower and one that I find most exciting. At the end of the 2015, I decided to completely revamp my car with a new chassis and aerodynamic design for Stealth II. I put much more effort in to the aerodynamic development this time around and experimenting with many different concepts. Once the body shape was decided, I then designed all the mechanical components to make it into a functioning car and built it over the summer of 2016 using much more advanced materials and manufacturing methods than I ever did before. In a massive push to allow the car to be counted in the 2016 Championship, I drove overnight from Cornwall to Aintree and started the race without any prior practice or testing and had no idea whether the car would work. I managed to drive to a 6th place in the race, which was followed with another closely fought 6th at Castle Combe and a 5th at the 2016 Final. Finishing off a busy 2nd year at university and moving to Milton Keynes to

work at Red Bull meant that not much time was available for upgrades but nevertheless I redid the rear end for improved packaging and motor cooling, focused on improving my batteries energy capacity and found a lighter driver in a bid to improve results. So far, this year I got my best result of 2nd at Dunsfold, 4th at Castle Combe and am raring to race at the 2017 Final for the 5th time. Greenpower is a largely why I chose a career in engineering and played a crucial part in getting a chance to work at Red Bull Racing for a year and I continue to find this competition an inspiring and enjoyable challenge.
