Foreword Green Port Hull is delighted to be supporting Project Blyth. The Green Port Hull vision is to establish Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire as a renewables capital of the UK, creating wealth and employment for the region. As investment in offshore wind increases in the Humber region, one of the roles of Green Port Hull is to ensure we have the skilled workers to make the area a world-class centre for renewable energy and a leader in manufacturing and engineering. To achieve this, we must encourage and inspire young people to consider STEM careers. Project Blyth is a unique initiative that allows us to do this. It will help the next workforce generation gain invaluable skills towards a long and successful career in industry. It’s been fantastic to see schools, colleges, community groups, young people, parents, local businesses and company mentors supporting the project. We cannot wait for the race day! Come and see us in the STEM marquee and have a go on the simulator and drive a mobile crane or excavator and also watch the state of the art 3D printer in action as it creates scale parts for F1 cars. Green Port Hull - discover the opportunities. Tim Rix Chairman – Green Port Growth Programme

Introducing Greenpower At Greenpower Education Trust we give young people an exciting, real life challenge with a proven track record in sparking an interest in engineering. The challenge – to design, build and race an electric car, harnesses the excitement of motorsport to inspire young people to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) studies. • We work with over 600 schools throughout the UK and run 35 regional events and an International Final every year. • More than 10,000 students take part each year, from primary school through to university.

Greenpower is helping to address the skills gap the UK faces in engineering and is licensed in various countries worldwide, highlighting to participants the global nature of the industry.

IET Formula 24 Ages 11-16

“The organisation was first rate, the staff were all very approachable and helpful and the atmosphere was very good indeed. It was, in fact, inspirational without being restrictive.” Paul March, Poole Grammar School

Teams of students design and build their own IET Formula 24 Kit Car and compete at regional events and the International Final held at Rockingham Motor Speedway. IET Formula 24 is geared towards schools but we welcome private entries and teams from youth groups and engineering clubs.

IET Formula Goblin Ages 9 – 11

The IET Formula Goblin is an electric kit car designed for young people to build and race at venues such as Goodwood. A typical build takes 15 hours and the Goblin can be dismantled and rebuilt each year with a new team of children. The Goblin Kit Car is aimed at 9 to 11 year-olds and is ideal for schools and community groups. The kit comes with easy to follow instructions and the build requires only simple hand tools. Schools can run the project as part of the design and technology or science curriculum. Teams design and create their own bodywork once the kit is assembled. School teams are invited to participate in Greenpower events held throughout the UK. “We have enjoyed building the car this year and it was great to compete against other schools’ cars in Washington. As result of the project we now know more about engineering, working together as a team, listening to others and sharing ideas.” Goblin Team Members, Cleadon Academy, Sunderland

IET Formula 24 gives 11 – 16 year-olds the opportunity to design, build and race an electric car on some of the UK’s top motor circuits.

“It was such a fantastic event for the pupils to take part in and something that made me immensely proud as a teacher.” Alan Tilley, Southbrook Special School, Devon

IET Formula 24+ Ages 16 – 25

Greenpower boosts interest and career opportunities in Science, Technology and Engineering by enabling 16 – 25 year olds to design, build and race an electric IET Formula 24+ Kit Car. Teams take part in the design and building of the car, race days and the IET Formula 24+ Championship. IET Formula 24+ is aimed at sixth forms, colleges, universities and apprenticeship schemes but we also welcome private entries and teams from youth groups and engineering clubs. “Having my involvement in Greenpower on my CV when I applied for university and placements really helped me stand out. The contacts I made at Greenpower also helped me to arrange my work placement during my degree” Nikki Jones, IET Formula 24+ participant

Healing School and Healing Primary School ...“The feedback has been excellent from all involved. Not only are they building skills in areas wider than engineering, but they are interacting with the companies that could go on to employ them in the future.” Healing School and Healing Primary School are taking part in Project Blyth, in IET Formula 24 & IET Formula Goblin. The schools are working in partnership with local companies and organisations including Associated British Ports (ABP), EoN, HCF CATCH, On Line Design and Siemens who provided advice and guidance, from project management, PR and marketing, to CADCAM and technical skills. As a part of Project Blyth, Healing School received a single-seat IET Formula 24 + car, and Healing Primary School received an IET Formula Goblin car, supplied by Greenpower Education Trust, part funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company, and Green Port Hull. Sam Horner, Assistant Principal at Healing School Science Academy, explained: “When we launched Project Blyth in assemblies back in September, we asked interested students to apply to be on the team, to give them experience in writing an application for a role. What we didn’t expect is to be inundated with 72 great candidates, which was incredible. As a result, we’ve had to appoint team leaders and create smaller teams to work in stages on the car. “The great thing about Project Blyth is that there is something for everyone to do. We have local firm Online Design helping with CAD, Siemens has assisted in creating an App to monitor progress and we have HCF CATCH providing a workshop for the car and supporting our young marketeers. Our English department is also helping out, as we have budding bloggers and journalists reporting on the project. The breadth of roles has attracted female students to the project too, who now form half of our team. “The feedback has been excellent from all involved. Not only are they building skills in areas wider than engineering, but they are interacting with the companies that could go on to employ them in the future. The students are also supporting younger pupils in our local primary school with their car, which helps them make that transition when it comes to moving up to secondary school.” Student Kieran McCarney, 15, from Immingham, has secured a work experience placement at Online Design as a

Humber Event at KCOM Stadium 2017

result of Project Blyth. He commented: “Many of my fellow students are still not sure what they want to do following GCSEs next year, but I know I want to be an engineering apprentice. Project Blyth is ideal for me. I race karts in my spare time, so it brings together a hobby I love with mechanical skills that will make me a stronger candidate for an apprenticeship. “Project Blyth has also helped us all get a taste of what a career in the sector is like. We were all given a CAD session, which gave us insight and understanding into design. Through that, I was offered a work placement with On Line Design this summer. I can’t wait to learn more and get that experience on my CV.”

Wilberforce Sixth Form College Electric kit car project inspires Hull’s next generation of engineers.

Humber Event at KCOM Stadium 2017

“Being a part of this project will be great for my CV when I come to apply for Advanced Apprenticeships next year.” The Wilberforce College team, which is supported by five members of staff, raised more than £5,400 to fund the car. They also secured sponsorship from Green Port Hull and the team’s employer mentor, The One Point. The local telecommunications company is providing workplace inspiration and support for the students, including workplace visits, mentoring through the design and build of their car, and work experience placements. Employees from local signage company Designs Signage Solutions are also helping “wrap” the car. Jonathan Butler, Director of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) at Wilberforce Sixth Form College, says: “With the significant investment in renewable energy in our region, we are seeing interest in engineering grow, but there is still more work to be done in terms of encouraging young people to undertake STEM subjects and consider a career in the manufacturing and engineering industries.

For 16-year-old Sam Brown, Project Blyth has proved the perfect outlet for creativity while he undertakes his A Levels in physics, maths, further maths and chemistry at Wilberforce Sixth Form College, Hull.

“Project Blyth and our electric car are certainly sparking interest, especially at our open events, so we hope this will continue to attract more students.”

Sam has been overseeing the electrical elements of the IET Formula 24 + electric car, whilst his teammates Ashley Bamford, Jordan Bartley, Kevin Lane, Ben Selway and Charley Williams look after the design and build.

To see the progress of the Wilberforce Sixth Form College team, follow them on Twitter @wsfcgreenpower

“Studying for four A Levels is demanding on my time, but Project Blyth has provided a good escape for me to try out new things,” says Sam. “I’ve always had an interest in electronics, buying micro controllers and chips and watching YouTube videos on what to make with them, so it’s a good way to put into practice what I’ve learnt. “My ambition is to go on to university after leaving college to study chemical engineering, with a view to starting a career in design, specifically process simulation. Project Blyth will build my skills and experience, making me a stronger candidate for a degree course and employment.” The Wilberforce Sixth Form College team were challenged with constructing the chassis using a 10-page instruction manual, before developing the modular bodywork that will surround the framework and wiring the car to a battery. Project Blyth has enabled the students to develop a wide variety of skills, from computer aided design (CAD) and data logging on a Raspberry Pi 2, to fundraising, branding, social media and advertising. Ashley Bamford, 17, is studying Level 3 Engineering at Wilberforce Sixth Form College. He will be tasked with racing the car the team has built in July. “It’s been great to see the car develop since we started the build in September 2016 and we can’t wait for the first test day in May,” says Ashley.

Hornsea School & Language College East coast students get set for Project Blyth race in memory of beloved teacher The project management, mechanical and marketing skills of young people will be put to the test this July, as students from Hornsea School & Language College gear up to race an electric kit car they’ve built from scratch. The team of 18, who have been involved with Project Blyth since it launched in the Humber region last year, will see months of hard work come to a grand finale, as they take to the track at Hull’s KCOM Stadium on Sunday 16th July. The students will be racing in memory of James Moorfoot, who taught English at Hornsea School & Language College. Mr Moorfoot passed away in February after collapsing during a football match he was playing in for Langtoft AFC. “The students have named the car after Mr Moorfoot and will be racing in his memory, which is a lovely gesture,” says Sam Patterson, a teacher of design at Hornsea School & Language College, who is leading Project Blyth there. “All the students are incredibly excited about the race. We’ve been spending the past few weeks testing the car on the track and holding driver selection days, to pick out those who will be behind the wheel on the day.” Hornsea School & Language College first heard about Project Blyth last year, when students had a visit from Greenpower Education Trust’s Vaughan Curnow, who is responsible for the Humber-wide Project Blyth. The school saw it as an opportunity too good to miss and started fundraising for the F24 kit car, gaining valuable sponsorship from the local Rotary Club. They also formed their team, made up of Year 9 students with a keen interest in extra curricular activities, and brought on board two Sixth Form students, Andrew Greaves and Adam Richards to help mentor their younger counterparts. Although Project Blyth’s primary focus is on developing STEM skills, the initiative provides scope to enhance skills in other areas, such as project management, marketing and promotion, and finance. This is why Sam and the staff at Hornsea School & Language College decided to give each individual a role and responsibilities within the team, so each person could play to their strengths. They appointed a pit crew, designers and photographers, and handed student Katie Shelley the job of team leader, to work as a link between the rest of her team and the mentors, ensuring deadlines were met and to drive the project forward.

Humber Event at KCOM Stadium 2017

Katie explains … “Not only has this project helped develop my leadership and social skills, but the whole team has benefited from the experience. It has allowed us to bond with each other and learn to really work together as a team. Furthermore, we are working with some amazing people within our community. We held an open evening for our sponsors, so they could see our progress, and it was good to meet the people who have helped us with our car. “Project Blyth means a lot to our school. Not only is it a lovely way to relieve exam stress for students, but it has allowed us to turn the awful passing of Mr Moorfoot into a positive event, by racing in memory of him and naming the car after him. Our school has supported our team so much and having so much motivation from our teachers and friends has made us work that much harder to get things just right for race day.” Once the kit car arrived, Sam and the team got to work on the build of it. Although the instructions on how to build the car were straightforward, innovation and creativity were needed on the design of the car. “I actually studied car design at university, so I got in touch with a few old contacts of mine who work in the industry to ask for their help. Their advice was invaluable for the students,” says Sam. “We’ve also built incredible partnerships amongst the Hornsea community too, as news has spread about our Project Blyth efforts. A local doctor donated carbon fibre, for the shell of our car, and put us in touch with a friend of his who has experience in working with carbon fibre. He came in to give us some guidance on the shell construction and aerodynamics. “Local motorcycle race Jordan Rushby also visited the school to advise us to paint logos on the car, rather than use stickers, to reduce drag. Everyone who has helped has been so enthusiastic about Project Blyth.” Hornsea School & Language College has received support from a plethora of local businesses, from fish and chip shops and egg producers, to physiotherapists, joiners and scaffolders, who have supplied funding, tyres, overalls and purchased advertising space. Construction firm Hobson & Porter have kindly donated helmets emblazoned with the names of the drivers, too. Sam adds: “Project Blyth has been a fantastic experience for all our students. Not only has the race given everyone a focus towards the end of the year, but it’s already helped them gain valuable experience. Mentoring the team has helped Andrew secure an apprenticeship with BP for later this year, and it has inspired many of the others to consider STEM subjects for GCSE.”

Case Study MC4C Team 13

A team of entrepreneurs from Hull are honing their enterprise skills thanks to Project Blyth, an innovative education initiative in the Humber region which is supported by Green Port Hull. Team 13 is a group of six young people involved with the ESF Funded Youth Employment Initiative, Making Changes for Careers (MC4C) youth enterprise programed. All budding entrepreneurs with businesses, they signed up to Project Blyth to enhance their ‘Big 13’ enterprise skills, covering teamwork, effective communication, creativity and innovation, leadership, problem solving and product design, to name just a few. The team is made up with 6 young entrepreneurs each with their own skills set and developing business idea; Jade Smithson – Seamstress, Charlene Revell – Crafts, Courtney Exelby – Home Furnishing, Ashley Hoggard – Home Improvements, Courtney Branagan – Massage Therapist and Laura Suter - Drama Therapist. Team 13 has, devised sponsorship packages and gained support from local companies to develop its IET Formula 24+ electric car. The team have been supported by major employers within the region including: Budget Tyres, Radphone, Hull Jap Car Services, Hull Youth Support Trust, The Rank Foundation, John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, Northern Gas Networks, Sangwin Group, Sign Services, Sling Fit Mama, LBDA and R & M Maintenance, who have all been involved with the development of Team 13’s car. Jade Smithson, driver for Team 13 and a budding young entrepreneur who runs her own business, Jade Smithson Designs, making bags and cushions out of sports shirts commented: “For Team 13, it’s not so much about the STEM and engineering element – it’s about us building our skills in other areas, which we can apply to our businesses in the future. It’s been good to try something new too. Being a seamstress, I’m hands-on with fabrics, so I’ve been able to transfer my abilities to a car, which has been a new challenge. I’ll also be driving the car as part of the race, which is exciting.”

Humber Event at KCOM Stadium 2017

Project Blyth has allowed the young people from MC4C to put the skills they’ve learnt into practice and has given them valuable experience. They have been essentially running the project as a business, with the name Team13 stemming from the ‘Big 13’ Enterprise Skills that are actively promoted as part of the MC4C project (Team Work, Organising and Planning, Negotiating and Influencing, Ethical Decision Making, Initiative, Creativity and Innovation, Product and Service Design, Financial Literacy, Effective Communication , Risk Management, Leadership, Positive attitude and Problem Solving) For example, they’ve networked and negotiated with companies to gain items such as overalls for the workshop, in return for sponsorship packages. Team 13 are gaining enterprise skills as well as confidence, which will stand them in good stead in business. Team 13 demonstrates that Project Blyth is not only for budding engineers and petrol-heads. It’s a valuable way of teaching young people business basics, building confidence and giving them skills that they can apply to a variety of careers. You can follow the team’s progress on Twitter and Facebook @Team13PB

Case Study Ganton School

...‘The panel were very impressed with the students enthusiasm, can-do attitude and plans to involve the whole school with the project.’ Ganton started their Greenpower adventure in December 2015 when we decide to enter a competition to win an F24 Greenpower Car. Ganton School is designed to cater for pupils and students from Hull and the East Riding who have severe or complex learning difficulties. A group of students in the Sixth Form produced a short video piece about why they would like to win a car and from this they were then asked to present a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style presentation in front of a panel of judges. The students were brilliant in their presentation. One of the judges comments were ‘The panel were very impressed with the students enthusiasm, can-do attitude and plans to involve the whole school with the project.’ The car arrived the following March and the students were very excited, we immediately got started with some help to construct the car. We were very lucky to get Humberside Fire & Rescue Service to be a partner to help us with the project and in turn they got a small engineering company involved to construct us some bodywork. Nick Tomlinson, Community safety manager at Humberside FRS, said ‘The team and I at Humberside FRS really enjoyed working with the students at Ganton School.’ The students decided to design our car in the colours of a fire engine and once the panels were built we enjoyed attaching them to the car. We must thank Xeco engineering for all their work in making our panels and Brough Paint repairs for spraying the panels. We would also like to thank 5-ways for sponsoring our helmets and gloves and Andy at OMYA for donating our overalls. Fireangel have also constructed a large custom-made smoke alarm that has been mounted on the back of the car. This has been designed with the aim of encouraging people to check their smoke alarms whilst reiterating the Humberside FRS message of fire safety. The students enjoyed practicing driving the car in our school grounds and last month they attended a practice event at Blyton Race track. We were happy to pass scruteneering and enjoyed driving the car around the race track. They students really did get a ‘feel’ for the car and how it handled at speed. The students are looking forward to the race day at KC stadium and are very excited to be a part of this exciting project.

British Steel is a world leader in the production of long steel products (rail, sections, special profiles and rods) with facilities across the UK and France. The new British Steel was created in 2016 when Greybull Capital bought the Long Products Europe business of Tata Steel. Our range of high quality steel products go into a number of markets around the world. We also have a network of metal centres and service centres across the UK and Ireland enabling us to serve our customers quicker and more efficiently. We live by three core values – pride, passion and performance. We’re proud of our heritage, our products and our people. We’re passionate about helping our customers succeed, making our business sustainable, protecting our communities and developing our people. And we’re driven to achieve our best performance… production excellence, productive environments, profitable outputs. British Steel has passionate, hard-working, ambitious and dedicated employees and together we can create a future we are all proud to be part of. In addition to experienced hires we are looking for talented trainees to join our apprenticeship and graduate schemes. We also offer a range of ‘try before you apply’ schemes such as work experience, industrial cadets, link scheme and undergraduate placements. For more information email: recruitment@britishsteel.co.uk From its launch in 2015, The Humber UTC has been providing a specialist engineering education for students from Year 10 to 13. Students can develop their academic knowledge, technical skills and personal qualities by working with our industry partners on innovative projects which are fully integrated into our GCSE and A level curriculum. Our vision communities where children and young people thrive. Our core purpose is create environments and deliver activities which enable children and young people to identify and realise both their aspirations and their potential. We works with Children and Young people growing up in challenging and difficult circumstances; they might be living in families with issues like addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, domestic and other forms of abuse, a parent or sibling in prison. These children and young people often don’t have an adult they can rely on in their lives or a secure place to call home, they don’t have routine or support as they try and find their way in life. Our services and activities are developed and delivered with these children and young people in mind. We work in Hull with 6,000 individuals every year. Our services includes Family Support, Community Day Nurseries, Youth Work, Play Work and Community Sports.

At aspire2work, we offer a wide range of FREE, vocational and ‘hands on’ courses through the aspire2work programme to help 16-19 year olds to achieve their goals, realise their dreams and get a great job. It’s not like school; instead, we treat all our students as young adults and work hard to make learning easy and enjoyable. In a recent survey, 97% of learners said they would rate their experience on the study programme as good/very good overall. Aspire2work is part of aspire-igen, a Yorkshire-based social enterprise committed to changing lives for the better through learning and work. We support young people and adults in all industries, including STEM, and we are the Yorkshire region’s largest provider of employability, training and guidance services. *Study programmes vary depending on location. Flags YELLOW FLAG

Indicates that there is a hazard ahead, e.g. stationary car/s or recovery vehicle. Be extra careful, slow down, and only overtake other cars if there is a significant speed differential. Drivers deemed to be overtaking dangerously under yellow flags will be penalised.

RED FLAG

This means that the session is stopped until further notice. All drivers will slow immediately and continue slowly around the circuit until indicated to stop. Remain in the vehicle unless otherwise instructed.

CHEQUERED FLAG

Each vehicle will finish the race when it first crosses the timing point after the race duration measured from the first time the union flag drops at the start of the race. As cars cross the start line after they have finished they will be presented with a static chequered flag. The winning car will be presented with a waved chequered flag.

BLACK FLAG

A black flag pointed at your car indicates that you should enter the pitlane immediately, either for a Sin Bin penalty or because something is wrong with your car.
