President’s Message
Tim Marion 2024 GBA President
It’s a tremendous honor to serve as your Association president this year. I couldn’t do any of this without the support of a dedicated Board of Directors. We recently met and I can assure you we have a dynamic group leading our organization this year.
Our plans are to continue to focus on the key priorities that our Association has outlined for the past several years…and to accomplish these goals we need greater member participation. I encourage you to consider joining one of our planning teams to help support the goals and objectives we have.
Membership: Our membership team is focused on finding ways to help members make valuable connections within our Association…as well as grow as an Association. If you’re looking for a place to connect with other members…this is a great energetic team to join… serving as Ambassadors for our industry. Reach out to Sal Cagno and/or Amy Jones for additional information.
Construction Careers: Our new Scholarship Committee is working to develop an innovative and “out-of-the-box” incentive program focused primarily on skilled trades training. This group is working with educational and other workforce development organizations to promote and build greater awareness for construction careers. The Endowment Committee is focused on securing the financial resources to provide these training opportunities…including expanding our very successful Casino Night to be held on June 14…mark your calendars now as you don’t want to miss this event.
Advocacy: Monitoring and addressing regulatory and legislative issues impacting our business and industry remain a top priority and benefit of membership. Recently I attended the NCHBA regional meeting and was more than impressed with how effective our state association has been working on our behalf. This past year was a record year in overturning policies that would have been detrimental to our businesses. We are honored to have NAHB’s Chief Lobbyist, Lake Coulson, join us for our annual meeting on March 21 providing political and economic updates. This is one meeting I would highly encourage you to attend. Not only for his presentation…but to join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of our 2023 annual awards recipients.
Leadership: Numerous opportunities are available for involvement within our councils, committees and planning teams. If there is a specific area of interest…let us connect you with the right person or group. As I have found first-hand over the years, through my own various levels of involvement, members like to do business with engaged members. Serving on a committee may not be your thing…and I understand that….however speaking to a classroom of students about careers opportunities might be an area of interest…let us connect you.
Marketing & Networking: Whether you attend a membership meeting…educational program…golf or skeet tournament…council or committee meeting…all provide opportunities to market your business and gain new business connections. Looking for an easy entry point….join us for our monthly First Wednesday membership socials…meet other members in a relaxed atmosphere while learning more about our Association.
Make sure to follow updates on our website and in your weekly Member News emails.
Hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming events…or in a planning team meeting!

Member Connections
Members like to do business with members they know. One of the best ways to make connections with other industry members is by attending membership meetings and special events…serving on task forces and committees…working side-byside on projects. Every meeting and event, including educational programs, provides marketing and networking opportunities. As you strive to expand and grow your business…do so by getting involved and connecting with other members.
First Wednesday Member Connections
These monthly informal networking socials are designed to provide a casual setting to mix and mingle with other industry members. No agendas…no presentations…just stop by and make new business connections. Invite prospective members to attend with you as your guest. Locations vary…held on the first Wednesday afternoon of most months from 4:30-6:30 pm.
Membership Team
Looking for ways to meet members…our membership team helps members make connections…as well as assists with various membership meetings and special events. It’s a fun group and a great way to get involved. Quarterly meetings are held prior to First Wednesdays.
Construction Careers
Members are needed to help with all aspects of building greater awareness for construction careers…from serving on our scholarship planning team and endowment committee…to providing classroom and jobsite visits for students…to helping us expand our current partnerships with educational and workforce development organizations.
Professional Women in Building (PWB)
If you are looking to connect with other women within our industry…join our PWB Council…which just celebrated its 2nd year…70+ women strong! Quarterly educational programs are offered along with networking socials and community service opportunities throughout the year. Annual dues are $100 which provides local, state and national PWB membership…GBA membership required.
Remodelers Council
If you are engaged in any aspect of residential remodeling…you should join our Remodelers Council. Council membership includes quarterly educational programs…website directory listing…along with national membership benefits…annual dues are $75.
Young Professionals
For our Under 40…and “Young-at-Heart” members…our YP group is planning a series of networking socials and educational programs this year…open to all members. YP members are also engaged in our construction careers and community service initiatives.
Find information on these and other activities on the GBA website at www.GreensboroBuilders.org

Building for the Future
Workforce development is one of the greatest challenges our industry has faced over the past decade and continues today with an increasing shortage of skilled labor. Our Construction Careers initiative has involved working with area schools to promote career opportunities within the construction industry. This has included classroom and job-site visits, career fairs, job shadowing and internships, participating with Skills USA, as well as partnering with Junior Achievement to host a Construction Academy for 8th graders.
We are working to expand on these initiatives through the establishment of our Building for the Future Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment . In developing an annual scholarship program with sustainable funding sources, our goal is to attract students, young adults, and others providing financial assistance to obtain the skilled training needed to pursue careers in our industry.
As an industry, we have a great story to share and need your help in promoting the value and growth opportunities associated with construction careers. Students and adults need to be aware of the tremendous employment opportunities within our industry.
Ways You Can Help…
Scholarship Committee: NEW this year, we are launching our revised scholarship program. We have been working closely with area schools, community colleges and workforce development organizations to develop the scholarship criteria with plans to award our first scholarships this summer. As we begin to promote the application process…please help us share information.
Scholarship Endowment: This group is focused on securing financial resources needed to manage and grow the endowment fund, including corporate donations and special fund-raising events such as the Casino Night.
Casino Night: Mark your calendars now for Friday, June 14
This past year’s inaugural event was a tremendous success…and we expect to exceed attendance and money raised to support our endowment this year. Sponsorships are available…join others in showing your support for our Building for the Future scholarship initiative.
Classroom Visits: In working with both the high schools and community college, there are numerous needs for builders, remodelers, trade contractors to visit classrooms to help with hands-on activities as well as share employment opportunities.
Building Materials & Tools: Have excess materials and/ or tools that you can donate to the school system? Our high school construction classes have a minimal budget and can always use tools, building materials and supplies. Habitat Restore is willing to be a drop-off location on our behalf…more details coming soon.
Financial Donations: Corporate and/or personal donations to the endowment are appreciated. Endowment money is restricted and held within the GBA Benefit Trust – a 501c3 charitable trust. Only interest and gains on the endowment principal will be used to provide scholarships and financial incentives. Contributions can be made online with credit card payment or checks payable to the GBA Benefit Trust Scholarship Fund.
Follow updates and additional ways to get involved with our Construction Careers initiatives on the GBA website…and in your Member News emails.
Working together…we’re striving to build greater awareness and interest in construction careers…helping to address our growing workforce demands and needs.

Parade of Homes
Your Input Is Needed…
Planning is underway for this year’s Spring and Fall Parade of Homes. Now is the time to start making plans for the Fall Parade…entry deadline is August 16
In looking ahead to 2025, the Parade Committee is considering changing the format for the Parade and needs your input. Consideration is being given to going back to one Parade per year…held in the spring with some form of judging...based on the number of entries we have…as well as only allowing houses that construction is complete be allowed to enter. Since the recession in 2008, we have offered the two Parade of Homes…based on the industry challenges during that time and since. By offering two events, builders have had the flexibility of using one or both Parades as marketing opportunities…given that some homes sold prior to or were under construction at the time of one of the Parades.
The Parade Committee wants to hear from you as we consider the future direction for our Parade of Homes. Consideration is also being given to another form of a home tour for the fall… therefore any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Contact Mavis Holcombe at (336) 706-6942 for additional information and/or to share your suggestions.
Tour of Remodeled Homes
August 17-18
Showcasing Professional Renovations
The 27th annual Tour of Remodeled Homes, sponsored by the Remodelers Council, will be held August 17-18 . Entries may be traditional open houses as well as virtual tour only. Renovations should be available for photography by June 30. There is no limitation on the number of years back the project was completed…so you can showcase prior renovations. Participation Agreement & Homeowner Consent Forms are due by June 30
Virtual tours of the renovations, along with remodeler contact information, remains on the TOUR website page throughout the year which is a great resource for consumers looking for a remodeler.
Sponsorship and advertising opportunities are available for the Tour of Remodeled Homes magazine, which is printed as well as available digitally.
For additional information, contact Mavis Holcombe at (336) 7066942 or mholcombe@greensborobuilders.org.
