Tim Marion 2024 GBA President

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost here…where does the time go? As an Association…we have had a busy spring, and things are not slowing down as we approach the summer…which is all good. Special thanks to our council and committee volunteers, leadership team and staff that makes it all happen.

We kicked off the year with updates from NAHB…including having Lake Coulson, NAHB Chief Lobbyist share political and housing insights at our Annual Awards Celebration Congratulations again to our Annual Award recipients…all very deserving of the dedication and commitment they continue to make in our Association, industry and community.

Our First Wednesday Member Connections continue to grow…providing a great networking experience as well as opportunity to invite prospective members to learn more about GBA and the numerous benefits of membership. We have held SOLD OUT Golf and Skeet Tournaments this spring. Our Professional Women in Building (PWB) has 80 members and growing…hosting quarterly educational and networking events.

This year’s Spring Parade of Homes featured 35 newly constructed homes…with more than 1,500 attendees visiting some communities throughout the two weekends. It’s time to start making plans for our Fall Parade of Homes to be held October 5-6 & 12-13.

If you’re involved in residential remodeling…I would like to encourage you to place an entry in our annual TOUR of Remodeled Homes to be held August 17-18 featuring open houses and virtual tour only entries. It’s critical that we promote the value of working with professional remodeling companies to area consumers. This event has been great for our company, providing us and our associates the opportunity to showcase new products, design trends and quality craftsmanship.

I would like to offer a huge shout-out to our Construction Careers Committee…they have been working diligently to launch our Building for the Future Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment and new scholarship initiative designed to provide financial support for students and adults pursuing skilled trades training. We are expanding our partnerships with both Guilford County Schools and GTCC with several new volunteer opportunities. Reach out to Will Yearns or Cheryl Collins to learn more.

If you don’t have it on your calendar…you need to…and sign up today for our Casino Night to be held on Friday, June 14…with ALL proceeds supporting our Scholarship Endowment. This inaugural event last year was such a success…everyone asked that we do it again and extend the hours. At the end of the evening…convert your casino chips to raffle tickets for some great prizes donated by our members. Special thanks to our sponsors, prize donors, and members for your participation in this fund-raising event for our scholarship program.

On a personal note…I would like to thank you for all the support the past few months through the illness and death of my father. As many of you know, my dad started Marion Tile and Flooring which has been a GBA member for the past 45 years. I’ve had the honor of working alongside him all these years. On behalf our family and everyone within our company…we appreciate your condolences and words of encouragement as we adapt to this tremendous loss.

2023 Annual Awards

ur Annual Awards Celebration was held on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at Starmount Forest Country Club featuring NAHB Chief Lobbyist Lake Coulson, who provided political and economic updates affecting our industry. Join us in congratulating the following individuals and organizations recognized for their contributions to the Association, the building industry and community.

Eugene Gulledge Award

The Eugene Gulledge Award for Distinguished Service is the highest honor given by the Builders Association. It is named in honor of Eugene Gulledge who founded the Greensboro Builders Association sixty-seven years ago. This award recognizes continuous, outstanding contributions to the Builders Association and the community at large over an extended period.

Will Yearns, Granville Homes received the 2023 Eugene Gulledge Award. Will has been involved in the building industry for the past 15 years and actively engaged in our Association. His vision, innovative and strategic thinking have been instrumental in the development of many initiatives benefiting our members and industry. Will has served in numerous leadership capacities, including with our Young Professionals, Construction Careers, Raising Roofs, TREBIC, North Carolina Home Builders Association, as well as our Finance and Executive Committees and Board of Directors, serving as our 2021 GBA President. Over the past six years, Will has led our workforce development initiatives, striving to expand our partnerships with area educational and workforce organizations, including developing an online Jobs Portal. Will understands and values the importance of giving back…and does so for our Association as well as many other entities throughout our community.

Builder Member of the Year

Kevin Pegram, Kylind Services received the 2023 Builder Member of the Year Award. Kevin has been involved in the building industry for the past 30 years. He has served in a variety of leadership roles within our Association including our Builders Council, Membership, Construction Careers, Finance and Executive Committees, and on the Board of Directors for the past five years. This past year Kevin served as our 66th Association president while championing the formation of our Building for the Future Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment and inaugural Casino Night with all proceeds supporting the Endowment.

Associate Member of the Year

Brittni Cooke, Movement Mortgage received the 2023 Associate Member of the Year Award. Brittni has been an active member over the past seven years…serving as an ambassador for our Association, helping others find ways to engage and connect. She serves on our Membership and Construction Careers committees; is a founding member of our Professional Women in Building Council; and has co-chaired our Young Professionals the past two years. She was instrumental in the development of our Let’s Get Social workshops this past year. Brittni was recently elected to our Board of Directors as an Associate Director.

Kavanagh Award

Tiny House Community Development received the 2023 Kavanagh Award for their efforts in working to address homelessness in our community as they are building and developing tiny house communities. Scott Jones and his team are not only working to provide affordable housing...they are focused on workforce development, providing skilled training for construction trades to area students and adults.

Lewis Award

Rich & Kathy Dumas, R & K Custom Homes received the 2023 Lewis Award for utilizing the most Association members in the construction of their Parade homes, working with more than 38 Associate members. This is their seventh consecutive year of receiving this award recognizing their dedication and commitment to conduct business with members.

TREBIC Announces New President

Jon Hardister , former NC House member representing Guilford County, has been named TREBIC president. Judy Stalder, Regulatory Affairs Director has been named Chief Operating Officer. We are excited to have Jon join our government affairs team, with his extensive knowledge and experience in legislative and regulatory affairs.

NCHBA Legislative Conference

NCHBA’s Legislative Conference and quarterly meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 4 from 8 am – 4 pm at Builders First Center (NCHBA office) in Raleigh. A legislative briefing will be held at 11:30 am to review legislative priorities. That afternoon from 4-6 pm will be the annual Legislative Reception at The Merrimon-Wynne House.

On Wednesday, June 5, members from across the state will gather at the General Assembly to meet with lawmakers and advocate for our industry. If you would like to participate in our GBA member visits with the Guilford delegation, contact Cheryl Collins for additional information.

NCHBA Group Health Insurance

NCHBA has partnered with Blue Cross NC to offer a Member Group Health Plan developed specifically for qualified NCHBA employer members. The NCHBA Benefits Trust can provide another market choice with potential cost savings for qualified members. Assigned brokers will be available to discuss eligibility requirements which include being an active NCHBA member with 2 or more employees (a spouse does not meet the definition of an employee), and whose business is directly related to the home building industry. The official start date of the plan is July 1, 2024.

Building for the Future

Construction Careers Briefing

Join us on Wednesday, June 5 at 3:45 pm , immediately prior to First Wednesday, for information on volunteer needs and involvement opportunities. Members are needed to serve as liaisons with our educational partners, including Guilford County high schools that have construction related classes, GTCC, and NC A&T State student chapter, along with other workforce development organizations. Our goal is to serve as a resource for these entities, helping make industry connections as needed.

Skilled Trades Scholarships & Training Grants

The application process is underway for our new scholarship program focused on providing financial assistance for skilled trades training classes and certifications. Application deadline is June 7 requiring an advisor/teacher recommendation. Scholarships and training grants will be awarded this summer for the fall 2024 semester.

Casino Night: June 14

Join us for a fun and exciting night while supporting our Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment as ALL proceeds from this annual event go directly into our scholarship fund. Sponsorships…prize donations…purchasing tickets…are all means of showing your support for our Building for the Future scholarship initiative. Special thanks to all you have already committed…if you haven’t yet…there’s still time to sign up!

Builder Material & Tool Drive

Have excess materials and/or tools that you can donate to the school system? Our high school construction classes have a minimal budget and can always use tools, building materials and supplies. We are in the process of compiling a list of their needs for the fall semester and plan to conduct a building material/tool drive this summer…more details coming soon!

Support our Scholarship Endowment

Industry members are encouraged to financially support our Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment . Corporate and personal donations are placed in a restricted scholarship fund within our GBA Benefit Trust – a 501(c)3 charitable trust. Annual interest and gains on the endowment principal will be used to provide scholarships and training grants.

Continuing Education for General Contractor

Tour of Remodeled Homes

August

17-18

The 27th annual TOUR of Remodeled Homes, sponsored by the Remodelers Council, will be held August 17-18.   Participation Agreement & Homeowner Consent Forms are due by June 30

Entries may be open houses as well as virtual tour only. Renovations should be available for photography by June 30. There is no limitation on the number of years back the project was completed…so you can showcase prior renovations. Virtual tours of the renovations, along with remodeler contact information, remain on the TOUR web page throughout the year which is another marketing platform and resource for consumers looking for an active remodeler.

Fall Parade of Homes

October 5-6 & 12-13

It’s time to start making plans for the Fall Parade of Homes to be held October 5-6 & 12-13 . Entry deadline is August 16. The Fall Parade will feature open houses and virtual tour only entries. Parade homes can be specs and/or pre-sales as well as previous entries for the virtual tour only option. Virtual tours of all Parade homes remain on the GBA website and mobile app for six months, serving as additional marketing exposure for consumers looking for active builders.

Sponsorship and advertising opportunities are available in both the Tour of Remodeled Homes and Parade of Homes magazines, which are available digitally, as well as printed and distributed through retail distribution points.
