President’s Message
Tim Marion 2024 GBA President
Over the years one thing that I continue to see within our Association and the building community is the true heart and dedication of industry members to help others in need. It was evident this past month as Hurricane Helene devastated our state. Within a day…we had members organizing supply drives, offering rescue and recovery assistance, providing financial donations and more.
The NC Home Builders Association initiated a Hurricane Recovery Fund with an initial $100,000 donation to support industry members who have lost or sustained significant damage to their businesses and homes. I am pleased that our Association supported this fund with a $5,000 donation. Currently recovery grants are being reviewed and awarded weekly.
We created a page on our website to provide updates on rebuilding initiatives and ways that you can support these efforts. From what we have learned thus far, most rebuilding will begin in the spring as currently the focus is on getting displaced homeowners in some form of housing for the winter. We would like to thank those members who have already signed up to lead rebuilding teams. We will be working directly with organizations in the most impacted communities to provide support.
This fall has been extremely busy time for our Association. In September, we celebrated Professional Women in Building week as our PWB council has grown to more than 80 members in two years…as well as Associate Member Appreciation month. We kicked off October with another great Oktoberfest hosted by Ferguson…followed by a successful Fall Parade of Homes. In addition, we have held sold-out Fall Golf & Skeet Tournaments Our First Wednesdays continue to grow. If you haven’t attended one this year, I highly recommend that you do. Not only can you make new business contacts…you have an opportunity to reconnect with old friends.
I would like to personally thank Phil Warrick for leading the review of our bylaws to bring them in line with changes to the national and state association bylaws, as well as update organizational procedures. The approval of these amendments helps to ensure our organization remains up-to-date and relevant.
As planning gets underway for 2025…we need member participation to support our goals and areas of focus. Workforce development remains a top priority for our industry. If you are hiring employees, please take a few minutes to complete our Workforce Development survey as well as post job openings on our website. Both are valuable resources for our educational partners. Membership growth is the lifeblood of our Association. You can help by asking the companies that you do business with to join.
It has truly been an honor to serve as your Association president this year. I have enjoyed working with our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers to support our initiatives and enhance value for our members.
As we close out the year, we hope you will join us for our Holiday Party on Thursday, December 12 to celebrate a successful year, install our 2025 Board of Directors, and kick off the holiday season!
Hurricane Helene Recovery
The catastrophic effects of Hurricane Helene on western North Carolina are unimaginable. It has been reported damages exceed $53 billion across the 29 western counties of our state…126,000 homes have been damaged…there were 1400 landslides…1000 bridges will need to be rebuilt...160 water systems will need to be repaired or replaced…and 6000 miles of roads will need to be reconstructed. Complete towns were destroyed…the rebuilding process is going to take years for many of these communities.
We are so appreciative of all the ways our members have stepped up to help provide immediate relief and supplies for impacted communities…making financial contributions…and providing general labor to help with clean-up efforts.
Mission and faith groups remain in place focused on general recovery and clean up. Current emphasis is helping people get in some form of housing to get through the winter, including RVs and trailers. Assessments of homes and buildings will continue to occur throughout the winter with rebuilding efforts starting in the spring.
Rebuilding Volunteers
Jim Sandknop has volunteered to coordinate our efforts to help with recovery and rebuilding. Several builders have committed to leading teams. We will be working with established groups in communities to identify rebuilding opportunities, especially those with the greatest needs.
Our first team worked in the Spruce Pine area October 28-30 with the primary focus on removing trees and cutting into firewood to help those without electricity.
There is limited rebuilding occurring at this point, as homeowners must wait on assessments and financial aid before they can start to rebuild. Preparing to get through the winter is everyone’s current focus.
As an industry, we know this is going to be a lengthy process. The need for volunteers to provide skilled labor, as well as help with general clean up and rebuilding will be great. If you would like to volunteer for a future rebuilding team, please sign up on our website.
We will continue to provide updates on recovery initiatives, along with volunteer and support opportunities, on our website and in our Member News emails.
NCHBA Hurricane Recovery Fund
Within a day of the hurricane, the North Carolina Home Builders Association jumped in to help…initially responding to requests from local home builders associations…securing Starlink satellite devices and hundreds of tarps that were flown into impacted areas.
The NCHBA Educational and Charitable Foundation initiated a Hurricane Helene Recovery fund with an initial $100,000 contribution from NCHBA. GBA made a $5,000 contribution to this fund. One month later, the fund has grown to more than $340,000 due to the generous contributions from industry members.
These funds are being used to provide much needed financial support to NCHBA members and local associations as they start the process of rebuilding their businesses and their lives. To date, more than 25 applications have been received. Grants are being allocated weekly ranging from $1,000 - $5,000.
If you would like to contribute to this fund, you can find a link on our website or you can mail checks payable to the NCHBA Educational and Charitable Foundation – 5580 Centerview Drive, Suite 415, Raleigh, NC 27606.
Donations of Supplies
Special thanks to MI-BOX Mobile Storage for providing a storage unit at our office… and to all the members who dropped off donations. These were distributed to communities with the greatest needs.
Hurricane Recovery Initiatives
Construction Careers
orkforce development remains a top priority for our association and industry as we continue to deal with a growing shortage of skilled labor. We are involved with area high schools, community colleges and other workforce development organizations striving to promote career opportunities within the construction industry. This includes participating in classroom and jobsite visits, career fairs, providing job shadowing, internships, on-the-job training and apprenticeship opportunities. We need your participation as industry members to help us expand these initiatives.
Mentoring Students
Would you be willing to visit area high schools, community colleges and/or college classrooms to share your story with students? It’s important for students exploring the trades to have a better understanding of the opportunities and job growth potential from someone in the field. Career and job fairs also provide a chance to promote all segments of our industry.
Are You Hiring?
In working with our educational and training partners, we are in the process of compiling data on the type of positions that our members and industry currently need, along with the most important skill and training required in these positions. Please take a few minutes to visit our webpage and complete our Workforce Development survey. This information will be shared with educational partners as they establish training priorities.
Post Job Openings
We need members to help us populate our Jobs Portal…which is basically a bulletin board of job openings. Posting a position takes just a few minutes…it’s a simple process. You establish an account so that you can add, delete and edit positions. You will need a brief description of the position with a link to your website or email for additional information and/or to apply.
Our goal is to promote the Jobs Portal through our workforce and educational partners so that anyone looking for a position in our industry has a starting point.
Scholarships
Our Scholarship Committee is working with Guilford County Schools, GTCC, Goodwill, Tiny House Greensboro and other workforce development training groups to promote our Building for the Future Skilled Trades Scholarships & Training Grants program. As part of the application process, the applicant shares their interest in pursuing construction related training, along with an advisor recommendation from an instructor. Scholarships and training grants will be reviewed and awarded quarterly.
Scholarship Endowment
Last fall we launched our Building for the Future Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment to provide a sustainable funding source for annual scholarships and training grants. We are extremely appreciative of the generosity of our association members who helped launch our Endowment including GreenHawk Corporation, True Homes, D.R. Horton, Builders FirstSource and 84 Lumber. In addition, proceeds from our annual Casino Night are directed to the Endowment.
Members are encouraged to join us in supporting our scholarship initiative by making a donation to the Endowment. Corporate and personal contributions are placed in a restricted fund within the GBA Benefit Trust, our 501c-3 charitable trust. Annual interest and gains on the endowment principal will be used to provide scholarships.
Building Greater Awareness
We are looking to expand promotion of construction careers across social media platforms to build awareness and serve as an industry resource, including information on the scholarships program and Jobs Portal. We also want to promote the diversity of opportunities within our industry. If you would be willing to share information about your company and career opportunities, let us know.
To meet today’s housing demands…growing our construction workforce is critical. Members are encouraged to join our Construction Careers committee…which meets quarterly to focus on these and other initiatives. Contact Will Yearns or Cheryl Collins for additional information.
