General Manager's Message (336) 275-8506

Dear Members, The end of 2016 and entrance into 2017 means a changing of the guards, with the president and our Board of Directors! I would like to thank Mr. Pete Davenport for his excellent year of service on the Board. Mr. Davenport is an exuberant person and a strategic thinker. This winning combination was very instrumental in our Board’s many critical decisions made over this past year to ensure our Club’s many successes. Our new President, Mr. Tommy Watkins, served as the Inside Vice President last year, and we are honored as he steps in as our president for 2017. The staff and I are looking forward to working with Mr. Tommy Watkins and the Board over the next year to make more memorable occasions for all of our Members.

Our Members' satisfaction is our top priority at Greensboro Country Club and your feedback is just as important. Please continue to submit your feedback to me about your Club experiences so we may continue to reach higher to exceed your expectations. I wish you and your family a very happy and healthy New Year! I look forward to seeing you at the Club in the future.

I want to express my deep gratitude to all of our Members for your generous gift Christmas Bonus you have offered to our staff this year. Thank you for your generosity and supporting our winning team of 210 employees of Greensboro Country Club. Please thank the staff members for their extraordinary efforts during our busiest time of the year. As we approach 2017 with excitement, I want to take a moment to reflect on the flurry of activity here at Club over the last couple of months. November brought us many spectacular events which you were able to enjoy. The wine dinners continue to be a Member favorite, and although Burly was a small event in November, it was quite successful. Our Thanksgiving Day Buffet was our largest one to date with over 530 Members in attendance! Our Holiday season from December 1st to December 31st has been our busiest and best yet with 194 parties on our books. We continue to make major renovations at both the Irving park and Farm campuses to refresh and modernize our facilities. The Capital Project Updates will continue to be sent to you as our renovations continue throughout the year.

(President's Message Continued) ready to engage. We have established a new Youth Activities Committee this year that will focus on programs for the children of our Members. This committee will be comprised of representatives from each of our other standing committees (e.g., Entertainment, Golf, Food and Beverage) so that it will have broad-based participation and input. We are excited about this new committee, as well as our overall committee structure, and are confident that our committees will help give us the leadership and support that our management team needs in order to develop events and programs that are appealing both to our Members and their families. GCC exists to serve its membership and it goes without saying that we need member usage and support to enable us to deliver best-in-class value in all of our programs and at all of our venues. If you have a dining or other entertainment decision to make, for you personally or for your businesses, please let GCC be your first choice! Also, and perhaps most importantly, please remember that new members are our lifeblood and are vital to our long-term success. Please do all that you can to identify individuals who are good candidates for GCC membership and please encourage them to apply or offer to be their sponsor. Our staff and our membership committee stand ready to assist you in any way possible in attracting new families to the Club. We are going to have a very exciting 2017 at GCC! The Board and I and the Club’s management team look forward to working with you in striving to continue the GCC legacy that we are all so fortunate to enjoy. "How Doctors at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center are using artificial intelligence to enhance treatment options for cancer patients." In October 2016, CBS’s "60 Minutes" featured UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s partnership with IBM’s artificial intelligence project, Watson, known widely for winning "Jeopardy!" in 2011.

January | February 2016

The team from UNC Lineberger largely responsible for this advance in cancer care will be on hand to describe this groundbreaking project:

Norman E. Sharpless, M.D.

Director, University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center

William Y. Kim, M.D.

Rush S. Dickson Distinguished Associate Professor of Medicine

Nirali Patel, M.D.

Assistant Professor, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Menu

IBM turned to UNC Lineberger, a world leader in cancer genomics, to help test whether IBM Watson could improve how cancer experts identify treatment options for patients. By pairing a cancer’s genetic profile with information culled from millions of medical journals, tens of thousands research studies, and a wide array of scientific databases, UNC Lineberger demonstrated that Watson – and cognitive computing – could help identify patient-specific treatments, significantly reducing the amount of time it takes to perform this analysis, from weeks to minutes. Most important, Watson identified potential treatment options that we not yet considered in one-in-three-cases.

Husic Vineyards Wine Dinner with Owner, Frank Husic Wednesday, April 5th

In 1997, on a hillside overlooking the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, the Husic family set out to realize a lifelong dream. Moving endless rocks and sculpting narrow terraces that cling to the mountains edge, they planted three small cabernet sauvignon vineyards which peacefully coexist with the regions wildlife. These rugged, rocky growing conditions, combined with careful farming methods have yielded a limited amount of magnificent fruit, thus a spectacular cabernet sauvignon. As the year came to a close, we finished the year out in style with our Gentlemen’s “1909” MemberGuest Invitational and several other significant events.

Chairman’s Cup

This fun and exciting tournament features two-man teams, playing a better ball format. And then the “Chairman’s” score is added in to assist each team. A special thanks to Club President, Pete Davenport, for playing this year. He filled in for Golf Chairman, Cabell Poindexter, who was unable to play. Gross Champions Net Champions

The “1909” Member-Guest Invitational

This year’s event featured a full field, fun and exciting social events, strong competition and golf courses in superb condition. One of the highlights of this tournament each year is the renewing of old friendships and the making of new ones. This year was no exception. While there was a golf tournament to be played, the focus was on the camaraderie and fellowship of the field.

2017 Goals for Ladies... Fun! Fun! Fun!

When polling women golfers nationally, it has been found that their primary desire is fun golf versus competitive golf. With this in mind, we wish to invite our membership to join in with various sports to create new friendships and additional golfers. With your help, we will continue to grow the ladies golf programming. So we invite golfers and those thinking of becoming golfers to consider the following:

Ladies Luncheon Series Tuesday, January 10th

12:30 p.m. | Irving Park All GCC women (not just our golfers), are invited to this luncheon series for an avenue to meet other Club members and perhaps learn something new. Bring a friend too if you would like. This fellowship will include fun topics such as wellness, shopping and wine tasting. It is always good to start the New Year learning about wellness, so join us for a brief introduction to the benefit of essential oils. Please join us January 10 for the first gathering! The LGA is sponsoring these to create friendships and perhaps some new golfers in the spring.

Ladies Golf Association Named Most Improved

Peggy Lowe received the “Most Improved Player Award” at the annual LGA Jingle Bell Brunch in December with improvement in handicap by six strokes over the April to November season. Susan Bohn was also congratulated for reducing her handicap by four strokes and Rosie Powell, Kris Flynt and Connie Meeker improved by three strokes. Retirement is agreeing with Candace Cummings, who continued to improve and lowered her handicap by another three strokes this year. Well done, ladies!

Ringer Book Winners

The Ringer Book is a record of rounds of golf played by our ladies which represents the best score on each hole over the whole season. It is a fun way to see how low you could score if you played your best on every hole. This year’s winner with an even par back nine of 37, was Carol Boles with a 75, three better than her winning score last season. Laura Norman with a pair of 38’s was next with 76. Honorable mention goes to Denise Collins, Libby Grubb, Laura Norman and Sara Ruffin, along with Carol, all having 38’s on the Farm front nine. Final kudos to Nina Bennett who posted a one over par 38 on the back nine as well.

The Year in Review

As is customary for this time of the year, I ask each of the two course Superintendents to give a brief review of their experiences throughout the year. These gentlemen are responsible for overseeing the majority of hard work that is accomplished each and every year by a very talented team of members that make up the whole of your golf course maintenance department. Doug Lowe, CGCS Director of Golf Course & Grounds Maintenance

Wesley Proctor - Irving Park Course Superintendent

We were met with many challenges this year. Extreme weather conditions were one of the most noteworthy. Once the summer months set in, it was clear that 2016 would be very hot. By the end of the summer the number of days that were 90 degrees or higher totaled 64 as compared to

2013 at 27. With that being said, we were able to nurse the Bentgrass greens through a record summer. On the golf course, tree removal, pruning and cart path repairs were some of our biggest achievements. During the winter months we concentrated our efforts on tree removal and pruning throughout the golf course. With well over 60 trees removed, we made quite a visual impact in some areas and an improvement in turf conditions in many others. Once the trees were removed, these areas were then regraded and sodded during the summer. Following tree removal, we focused our efforts on pruning low-hanging and dead limbs that may impede play or present a safety hazard. With the large number of trees at Irving Park, this task can be difficult to complete. Thankfully the weather cooperated, which allowed our team to prune a great deal more than a typical winter season. Last but not least, some much-needed cart path repairs were addressed at the end of this summer.

Brooks Turner – Farm Course Superintendent

Hot and dry can sum up 2016 in three words. This past year was very challenging; however we did manage to tackle some improvement projects before the onslaught of summer arrived. We added a forward tee on the sixth hole and finished the small area of winterkill from 2015 on 11. Also, in keeping with our drainage plan, we installed nearly 1500 feet of drainage throughout the course. Then came the months of July and August, which brought some of the hottest temperatures we have experienced for quite some time. That is when our entire focus was on the health and survival of our Bentgrass greens. This required our staff to spend nearly every afternoon syringing the collars and mounds on just about every green! I am proud of our staff’s dedication to this momentous task and we made it through with only a few small scars. That hard work and long hours paid dividends this fall as the greens were in excellent shape for the best time of year to play golf in this area. No rain for 55 straight days in October and November allowed for a plethora of ideal golfing days. We are already planning some improvement projects next year and hope to install another 1200 to 1400 feet of drainage, add several more forward tees and hopefully continue improve our putting surfaces. I am looking forward to the challenges in 2017!

January | February 2016

Well another year has come and gone and the theme for this seems to have been “change.” The weather was extremely hot, which was a change from the past several summers and resulted in a great many challenges to managing the two courses. It was also a year where we saw the passing of the guard in the Golf Pro Shop Operations with our most esteemed and long standing Golf Professional, Jim Deaton, making way for the new guy to come in and take on the daunting task of growing the game of golf here at Greensboro Country Club. We also welcomed in a new General Manager, Robert Lesinger, who will certainly have his hands full managing one of the premiere clubs in the Southeast. Both of these individuals are consummate professionals and based on their performance thus far I believe the Club is in good hands for what we hope will be many years to come. Both of these gentlemen also come here from the great state of Florida, and their influence played more than a small part in the Board’s decision this fall to proceed with the conversion of the Farm greens in 2017 to an Ultradwarf Bermudagrass putting surface. The course will be scheduled to close during the middle part of May and will open toward the middle part of August. The new Ultradwarfs were first introduced in our area nearly five years ago and have proven themselves to be a reliable grass that produces a very high quality putting surface. Once established, they will produce a higher quality and more year consistent year-round putting surface for our members and guest for many years to come.
