Greensboro Country Club January | February 2019

President’s Message (336) 275-8506

Dear Fellow Members, Happy New Year. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season.

and encourage them to apply or offer to be their sponsor.

It is my honor and privilege to serve as the president of Greensboro Country Club in 2019.

The Board, the management team and the staff all look forward to working with you to continue to be the premier country club in the Triad.

January | February 2019

I have big shoes to fill in this role. During my Board tenure, I have worked with four presidents who have tirelessly served the Club. Garson Rice had great vision initializing the master planning process and provided extraordinary devotion to increasing our membership. Gail Bernstein and Pete Davenport worked us through two years of change, with new leadership in management, golf and improved governance and continuation of master planning. Tommy Watkins has served our community for an unprecedented two-year term and directed the hiring of professional management, and the creation of both strategic and final master plans. Thanks to all of you for your service and more importantly, your friendship. 2019 will bring us challenges, as we address the potential changes to the Irving Park campus. Please rest assured, your club is in very strong hands under the leadership of Terra Waldron. Over five years ago the board decided to begin the transition to a General Manager run club, and move away from a club that had significant board member involvement in daily operations. As outlined in the strategic plan, we will continue down that path in 2019, with an emphasis on best practice board governance, professional management of daily operations and transparency to the members. GCC is your Club and we hope you view it as an extension of your home. I encourage you to raise your hand and get involved as a volunteer on committees. We need and welcome your involvement and input. Please remember that new members are the lifeblood of our Club and vital to our long-term success. Thank you for your efforts to identify potential new members

I hope to see you at the Club soon. Jason P. Bohrer President

Membership Message

I am honored to be your Membership Chair for this year, and I’m looking forward to working with all of you to continue our Club’s reputation as the premier Club in this area. After experiencing 11 years in a row with net annual losses in membership, I am happy to say that we are finishing 2018 with a net increase. Thanks to all of you who sponsored new members this year! The Board has decided to continue the membership drive we began in November 2017. While we finished the year with a net gain in members, we still need to increase our membership for the overall health of our Club. So please think about who you could sponsor in 2019! Our excellent reputation in this community is enviable. Importantly, we are an “invitation only” Club, and all applicants will be interviewed by members of the membership committee, and due diligence will be conducted, just as we always have. Our programming continues to get better and better, so I encourage you to take advantage of all we have to offer our members! Please feel free to reach out to me or our Membership Director Lori Price with any questions or thoughts you might have. We wish you the happiest of New Years! Ross Harris, Chairman Membership Committee

Thank you so much for a wonderful year at GCC! Your support in 2018 has helped continue to build the family, tradition and excellence we call home at Greensboro Country Club. I hope you had an opportunity to share in some of our fun holiday activities and rounded out your year with family, friends and memories to last a lifetime! Share your favorite 2018 GCC memory with a friend and encourage them to consider the benefits of membership. There are great things in store for the future of GCC. Be a sponsor and invite someone to join. Membership and memories made here are special! You can find a lot of memories on our social media outlets. If you haven’t subscribed to our pages, log on to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter today and keep in touch with our daily fun and updates as well as past events that are sure to spark conversations, smiles and laughter! General Manager/COO's Message (336) 275-8506

Dear Members, The beginning of new year starts with newly elected officials in the governing role of GCC. I would like to take the time to thank those who served the Membership in 2018 and those who stepped up in 2019. A key to the success of an organization is the working together of Club leadership and management. I am pleased and excited to say this has been my experience at GCC and I look forward to a productive and satisfying year for the Membership. As you have read in the new President’s letter, the year is continuing the good work(s) of past Boards and will stay focused on Strategic and Master Planning. The Board has committed to keeping these initiatives front and center by not allowing them to collect dust on the shelf. These initiatives are a road map for management and helpful when each department knows their respective roles. This effort allows staff directors to manage their departments with accountability. It is the trickle-down effect. Knowing what the parameters, standards and initiatives allows specific direction to be given.

January | February 2019

A few months ago, after I gained a feel for this operation, we began doing monthly calendar planning sessions. We heard and found sometimes we were duplicating

Page 4

or there was cross-over on departments; although not completely eliminated 2019, it should be better. As always, keep me informed. We have developed some new programs and we hope you will embrace and participate. Our staffing issues are subsiding and we are seeing a positive trend. This is validated by surveys, comment cards, and my generally walking around. You have heard me say people and paperwork, balance the two. We have more to do with enforcing standards, raising the bar and actual training. As a rule, training is and should be ongoing. I appreciate all the feedback, comments and suggestions, this is the only way we move forward. It is the not knowing which hurts the Club by rumors and inaccurate information. I hope your Holidays were filled with love, laughter, friends and family! Looking forward to a bright and wonderful 2019. Warm personal regards, Terra S. H. Waldron, CCM, CCE General Manager/COO

Dear Members, Now that 2018 is officially in the books, we can start looking toward what is sure to be a great line up of dining options this upcoming year. We begin 2019 with three fantastic wine dinners that include Honig on January 23rd, a Burgundy Wine Dinner on March 13th and Krupp Brothers on April 10th. Our Club’s Sommelier, John Centore, has done an outstanding job of lining up all of our wine dinners for the entire calendar year. Please check the website or inquire if you have interest in dinners that may be taking place later in the year. These events are a great way to enjoy the company of friends, food and wine here at the Club! In our a la carte dining restaurants, we begin our winter menu roll out on Tuesday, January 8th. At that time we’ll also be reintroducing a Sunset Bar Menu featuring some of the most popular items from the past two years like our Chateaubriand Sliders and Blackened Hawaiian Tuna.

January | February 2019

On Tuesday, January 15th we’ll launch our newest 1909 and Family Grille menus. We received great feedback on the direction of the fall menu, so we look forward to keeping that momentum going through the winter months. Also, after a short break in January, look for Tuesday's Burger Night to return on Tuesday, February 5th. Lastly, I’d like to officially recognize our Executive Pastry Chef Ben Shelton CEPC for becoming GCC’s first Certified Executive Pastry Chef by the American Culinary Federation. Ben is a tremendous asset when it comes to what we are able to accomplish at the Club. His professionalism and knowledge of the industry is second-tonone, making him a natural teacher of his craft, a role model for our junior culinarians and leader in the field. Congratulations, Chef Ben Shelton! From all of the culinary team, we would like to wish you a Happy New Year and the very best to you and your families in 2019! Happy cooking, Shayne Taylor, CEC, CCA Executive Chef

Golf Update The new year brings with it a level of excitement for what is to come! Perhaps it is winning a golf tournament, lowering your handicap or breaking 90 for the first time! Another exciting thing coming our way in 2019 are changes to the Rules of Golf, that are administered by the USGA (United States Golf Association). These changes are intended to make the game quicker to play and to add enjoyment to the game. There are more than 20 changes to the Rules, and in order to streamline the overall number of rules will be condensed from 34 to 24. We will promote the changes with a series of emails, posters and our resident Rules expert, Jim Deaton, will conduct a Q & A session before the golf season begins. To get started familiarizing yourself with the changes, please take the following quiz. Anyone completing the quiz may come to either golf shop for a gift!

Page 16

Golf Tip Distance Control It's that time of year where golfers are noticing their shots are not going as far as they did in the summer. Part of this is the colder weather. TrackMan has shown that on average as temperatures decrease by ten degrees Fahrenheit that the golf ball will fly just over one yard shorter. So where does the rest of the reduced distance come from? It could certainly be related to the wind or wet conditions. Another distance reducer related to the cold temperatures is your clothing. Wearing multiple layers and jackets can restrict your mobility. When your body is cold it also won't move like it did in the summer. The lesson here is to know your carry distances. This involves small adjustments day-to-day based on the weather, course conditions and human variables. Next time you are on the golf course choosing your club, don't think about how far you hit that seven iron last summer. The key is to predict how far it will go this swing today. I'm also a big fan of learning how to hit the same club different distances. Without changing anyone's grip, posture, backswing, etc. we can help you shoot lower scores if you know how to better manage your game. Come out for a lesson in our Teaching Pavilion using TrackMan to help calibrate your carry distances. Robbie Fritz Director of Instruction

Staying Busy This Winter

While golfer activity may be virtually non-existent during the peak winter months, there is still much work to be done by the golf course superintendent and his staff. Depending upon weather conditions, a variety of golf course projects can be completed even though the temperatures are not conducive for member play. Such activities might include planning for the new year, covering the Ultradwarf greens, renovating bunkers, installing new drainage, rebuilding tee areas, leaf removal, storm cleanup, mulching landscaped areas, cutting back ornamental grasses, cleaning off dams, removing dead and undesirable trees, and planting new trees and shrubs, etc. These projects are best undertaken during a time of the year when the normal demands of mowing and conditioning the course are of a lesser priority. Various golf course accessories might also need repair. Benches, signs, water cooler containers, trash bins, ball washers, rakes, etc., may need to be built or renovated. Routine building maintenance on areas such as the turf care center and pump houses are often set aside for this time period. Going through all the equipment is also a focus for the golf course mechanic staff during this time period. The offseason also provides the opportunity to complete a variety of administrative responsibilities. The winter months are a critical time to review all our training needs related to areas such as safety, operating standards and proper equipment operation. Despite the mid-winter blahs, we never forget the core mission, which is to make sure the course is ready for play every day for those who do decide to venture out. The cold temperatures we typically experience during this time of the year make it difficult but we still make an effort to condition the course whenever the weather allows. When the weather breaks and the greens thaw out, we make sure to take advantage and mow or roll as often as possible. The

bunkers are the same way. If they are not frozen, we make sure they receive a fresh raking. And before you know it, sunnier days and warmer weather will be knocking on the door. By the latter part of February, we will begin shifting gears from off-season mode back to in-season mode. We start with weed control applications to prevent summer weeds on nearly 300 acres of turf and roll right into fertilization, aerification, and topdressing of the greens. The next thing you know we are in April and hopefully the tee sheets are once again fully booked and the grasses are turning green. So, while golfers may be seeking cozier alternatives for recreational activities, rest assured the golf course maintenance staff is busy preparing the course for not only those select few golfers who venture out in sub-artic weather but the volume of their accomplishments will also be appreciated by the fair weather “in” season golfers as well. Doug Lowe, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Memorial Tree Plantings

In accordance with the Board of Directors and the Greensboro Country Club Memorial Tree Program, a new memorial tree was recently installed on the Farm golf course: A Japanese Maple was planted between the lower parking lot and the 10th tee in memory of Robert Spencer Worth.

January | February 2019

Most golf facilities in our region have a nine-month active golf season, which means they also have a period when the volume of play declines. In the Central Piedmont of NC, the “off” season typically falls between December and February. So, with little play on the course one might question what type of activity does the golf course maintenance staff engage in during this time period?
