Thank you, Michelle, and thank Thomas C. Watkins you to all of our administrative team, for stepping up President and helping guide us through this transition. With Terra on board, we are accelerating our strategic planning efforts and expect to be bringing soon to the membership some very exciting plans for capital improvements. Some of our facilities are simply aging and others are frankly worn out, and we need to invest prudently in the future of our Club. We have our recent survey to build on, and we look forward to additional membership input and participation as we continue to consider the capital improvement options that are available to us. Hi, everyone! Summer is here at last! I am pleased to let you know that we are continuing to attract wonderful members to the Club! I have seen many of them already enjoying all GCC has to offer, and I hope you’ll make every effort to welcome them when you see new faces! Our New Membership Ambassador program has also been very successful. All new Members that have requested an Ambassador have received one. If you would like to volunteer to be an Ambassador, we could still use your help. Please let Lori Frasier know if you’re interested! Our new member application and endorsement forms are available online now, so we’ve officially entered the 21st century! This should make it easy to submit these forms directly to Lori. Of course, you can always print them out and fill them out the “old fashioned” way! We are all looking forward to our new General Manager, Terra Waldron, joining the GCC family this month. We know she’ll have lots of great ideas to help our membership programs continue to be competitive and successful. As always, if you have any questions about our membership process, please don’t hesitate to let Lori or me know. Thanks for your support of the Membership Committee’s efforts to make the Greensboro Country Club the special place that it is!

General Manager/COO's Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Members, I would like to take this time to sincerely thank the Board and Search Committee of Greensboro Country Club for giving me the opportunity to return to a location that gives me a warm, familiar feeling. Having made a few trips back and forth before I began my tenure on June 15th, I found the culture as lovely as I recall from my previous time in the early 2000's. The first 100 days will be filled with familiarizing myself with the fabulous membership, staff, and the specific inner workings of the Irving Park and Farm Club locations. Please know my goal is to continue the favorite rich traditions and meld new and innovative events for your Club to be the destination location for all you do. We will always do our best because excellence does not take a day off. Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend my Welcome Party on June 20th. It was great to meet everyone, and I look forward to seeing all of you as I begin my journey at GCC. My next newsletter article will be filled with more details as I immerse into the day-to-day activities.

I hope your summer is terrific! See you at the Club.

On the Cover
We are excited to have shared the great game of golf with 47 juniors in our first year of the Greensboro Country Club's Junior Golf Academy Powered by Operation 36. It was amazing to see the engagement of the kids and the work ethic they put towards practice, play, and earning badges to advance within the curriculum. Our staff looked forward to every Academy Class, Supervised Practice and Match as it provided a great opportunity to help kids learn and grow in golf. The Operation 36 curriculum provides a nice challenge point for the players and it also provides a long term road map to help them succeed in golf. We look forward to starting our fall semester once schools start back, so be on the lookout for announcements regarding orientation meetings.

Dear Members, This summer will be an exciting time for GCC dining with many interesting things happening in the culinary program such as new additions to our culinary team, and innovative programs that will be coming your way throughout the rest of the year! First and foremost, I’m very pleased to announce the addition of Chef Joe Petracca to the Irving Park campus. Chef Joe comes to us from the Proximity Hotel and Printworks Bistro where he served as the Executive Chef for the past five years. Joe is a New England native where he attended college at the French Culinary Institute and Middlesex Community College. He holds degrees in both culinary and pastry.

This year has already brought many improvements to our facilities including the Family Grille buffet that received an upgraded look earlier this summer with a modernized layout, improved heating elements and more overall space for better food variety. Our new Family Grille Chef de Cuisine, Jerome Lewis, has already begun creating new dining programs like our family Italian night buffet served every Wednesday for the rest of the summer. Our Irving Park Sunset kitchen is also being improved with refinished floors which is expected to be finished late July. Once completed, our banquet kitchen will have its very own demo area that will serve as host to upcoming cooking classes and special guest chefs. I hope you all have a great summer! Happy Cooking, Shayne Taylor, CEC, CCA Executive Chef

In July the ladies are headed to Roaring Gap Club in Raring Gap, and in September will be traveling to Governors Club in Chapel Hill.
Ladies Golf Academy Powered by Operation 36
In June, we launched a new golf development program designed specifically for ladies. This summer-long program focuses on learning the game from the green back to the tee, as opposed to the traditional model of the tee to the green. This updated concept creates accomplishment more quickly and adds to the fun and enjoyment of the game. The interest has been so high, we have added an additional time slot. We now have sessions three nights a week with a social playing opportunity every other Sunday afternoon through the summer.

Golf Tip
July | August 2018
A quick way to reduce your number of putts is to chip and pitch the ball closer to the hole! An often overlooked variable for touch around the greens is grip pressure. On a scale of #1 to #10 with #10 being as tight as you can squeeze try using a grip pressure around #3 for most wedge shots. To help feel the weight of the clubhead and to let it brush the ground be sure to keep constant grip pressure the entire motion. For example, if you start off with grip pressure #3 then make sure at the end of your backswing your tension level is at #3, through impact #3, and then at the finish hold and evaluate the
Page 16
shot to make sure you still have a constant pressure #3. This constant grip pressure is a great way to add some finesse and touch to your wedge shots around the green. For shots buried deep in the bunker or in deep rough then you will need to increase your grip pressure, but if you are getting lots of those shots then you should call to schedule a golf lesson with one of our PGA Professionals. If you would like to schedule a lesson, please contact the Farm Golf Professional Shop at (336) 2884470. Robbie Fritz Director of Instruction

Slow But Steady Progress The story line for the year 2018 continues to be winterkill. The crews at each course began making repairs throughout each of the two courses during the second week of May when the areas finally began to clearly define themselves. This was a little later than we would have liked as far as starting the repair process, but the cool spring made for a very slow transition cycle this year. Now that we are in the early part of June we are approximately one third of the way through the repair process but one third of a big number means there’s still a lot of work to do.
to go well we hope to begin mowing the greens on day 18, topdressing on day 25 and verticutting and aerifying on day 32. From there we will continue grooming and molding the grass into a recognizable putting surface with a goal of getting the course open on day 56 (8 weeks) or Saturday, July 21st (not an official date).
Farm Memorial Tree
While the Irving Park Memorial Tree program has been suspended due to a lack of viable locations and a new direction we are going with our tree program there are still a minimal number of opportunities that exist on the Farm course. One of those locations was recently used in remembrance of James B. Adams Jr. A Deodar Our goal continues to be that we will have the vast Cedar was recently planted on hole #10 of the Farm majority of repairs made to each course by the course in an area to the right of the first fairway bunker. middle part of July. With that said, the work is hard and the guys go home most days exhausted, so if you get a chance to thank them, your support goes a long way in helping these guys understand their efforts are appreciated. The Farm greens were planted May 24th through 25th, and despite a scary weather pattern moving across our area the following week, we made it through without any measurable storm damage. We are sitting at day 10 as I write this article, and today we made our first post-planting fertilization application of what will be many to come over the next 7-12 weeks. If all continues
