Greensboro Country Club March | April 2019
President’s Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Fellow Members, Greensboro Country Club is a busy place these days, especially with all of the regular seasonal activities and the renovation planning work for the Irving Park Campus. As you know, the 2018 Board of Directors under the leadership of President Tommy Watkins, created a long-term strategic plan. The current board and management are focused on initiatives that drive the six key areas of the plan. The following are updates in each of the areas:
March | April 2019
Board Governance, Club Management and Staff Development • During the first Board meeting in January, Fred Laughlin, author of “Good Governance for Non-Profits,” presented an overview focused on country club governance. The meeting was helpful to the Board on our continued journey to achieve best-in-class governance. • Club Management has aligned annual goals of the staff to the strategic plan. Enhancement of Facilities within a Two-Campus Model and Financial Stewardship Facilities • The Renovation Committee was created and is composed of Matthew Rankin, Chair, Jay Kirkpatrick, Tommy Watkins, Dwight Stone, Terra Waldron and yours truly. As additional skill sets are needed, new members of this Committee will be asked to join. The Committee meets twice monthly with the Chambers project team. In addition, there are frequent meetings with Chambers and the House and Aquatics Committees to refine the design of the new IP campus. • In May, the pond on the 13th hole of the Irving Park golf course will be renovated, which will take six weeks. • Out at the Farm, the parking around the pool and tennis facility will have the asphalt replaced over a three-week period in April, and the general area enhanced to hide the stored maintenance materials. Financial Stewardship • On an operating basis, the Club recorded a loss of $157,000 for 2018, but with the recording of several one-time items, we ended the year with a loss of $28k.
Page 2
With the unplanned closing of the Farm golf course for green repairs and poor weather, golf results were below budget. Weaker than expected food and beverage results were also a driver. • Club debt ended the year at $3.5M, down from just over $4M. Membership Retention and Recruitment • Club membership ended the year at 1,319 vs 1,315 at year end 2017. • Three new members were welcomed into our community at the January board meeting. Recreational Experiences • The new Dart League is oversubscribed, and the reports from members are all very positive. • To create more time for members with young families to enjoy the facilities, the Kids Corner pricing has been enhanced. Many thanks to the members who provided the valuable feedback that lead to the changes. Dining and Social Experiences • The House Committee has brought back the popular GCC Speaker Series, with plans for a number of events this season. Communications • A new section has been added to the website with updates on the renovation and a place to submit questions. Watch this space and your email inbox for frequent updates. • The “GCC Club Connection” videos continue to be a popular medium for updating members on upcoming activities at the Club. • The Strategic Plan is being added to the website. • Monthly financial updates are available on the website including operating results and the balance sheet. Audited financials for 2018 results will be posted as soon as available. Jason P. Bohrer President

Hi, everyone! By the time you read this, I hope we will be seeing signs of spring! Your Membership Committee is off to a great start in 2019. We held our orientation for the new Committee Members in January, and everyone seems excited to help find new members for our Club. I am happy to report that, for the second year in a row, we finished the year with a positive net gain of new Members! So, our membership initiative, which we began a little over a year ago, is accomplishing its objective. If you have friends who are interested in joining GCC, please reach out to Lori Frasier, our Membership Director, or me. We would be happy to contact them. As I said in the last newsletter, we are an “invitation only Club, and all applicants will be interviewed by members of the Membership Committee, and due diligence will be conducted, just as we always have. I would like to introduce you to our Membership Committee for 2019: Sam Alem Sarah Beth Murphy Kelli Coley John Nosek Katie Cone Elizabeth Payonk Scott Faircloth Lori Richardson Bob Hudson Heather Suire Kimberly Jones Patrick Theismann Frank Lucius Kappie Yates Marc Magod Karen Schaede Luke Medlin Ryan Zell Please feel free to reach out to any of us with any questions or thoughts you might have! Message from the Membership Director In our efforts to enhance our sustainability efforts at the Club, we are introducing the new GCC tumbler to be designed for use on the golf course as we eliminate Styrofoam cups. Pictured is the new GCC Polar double-wall thermal tumbler, with copper vacuum insulation and clear acrylic lid. Polar tumblers keep liquids hot for up to eight hours and cold for 16 hours. We expect you will want more than one! Preorder your GCC Polar tumbler now for $15, billable to your Member account, by calling the Receptionist. Be sure to bring it with you for your next round of golf, tennis or visit to the Fitness Center. We are confident that these tumblers will help GCC be environmentally friendly and keep your beverages the perfect temperature, too! General Manager/COO's Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Members, Several wonderful initiatives, menus and programs have been added to Greensboro Country Club in recent months. We hired a new golf professional - Anne Marie Goslak - to compliment and round out the Golf program. The development of the Dart League was a great team effort to create fun things to do on cold winter evenings. It was such a hit with 68 players of all ages and gender. We will continue this as a regular program in the future. Tennis and Fitness have added programing and new equipment. Look for a refined Aquatics program in addition to two more Kid’s Camps in the summer. Members have responded well to the new and innovative menus Chef Shayne is presenting that include old favorites and new trends. Keeping abreast of trends and knowing the difference between trends and fads keep GCC relevant and fresh, and maximizes our resources accordingly. One way of knowing how we are doing is being judged not only by Members, but by your peers in the industry. I am proud and excited to say that GCC is now a Platinum Club of America. This award does not come lightly. It is earned and recognized by an advisory board made up of industry professionals judging on many aspects of the Club.
Some areas they review are Quality and Commitment of Membership, Governance, Prudent Fiscal Management, Adapting to Changing Times, Overall Experience, Caliber of Staff and Professional Service Levels, etc. We are hitting high marks and will continue to do so with ongoing training, professional on-boarding of talent and staff. Staff training continues to be a high priority, and will be going forward. Staff is also working hard with various Committees and Chambers to transition from the current facilities we have to the new and improved facilities Members voted on conceptually in December. The House Committee, Aquatics Committee and staff are heavily involved to identify a smooth transition during and under construction. Please visit the Renovation section of the website to stay updated on the construction and renovation efforts. I appreciate you keeping me informed and taking the time to share experiences, ideas and recommendations. It only make us better! Warm personal regards, Terra S.H. Waldron, CCM, CCE General Manager/COO

Board Room Photographs In late 2017, GCC remodeled the Boardroom where all of the pictures of our GCC Board of Director Past Presidents were located. The Club decided to create a series of combined president pictures using resized duplicate of the original picture; then the Club mailed the original photo to the previous president or a family member. Most all of the original pictures have been successfully delivered, but we still have several photos that need to be distributed. If you have any contact information for the GCC Past Presidents listed below, please send an email or call Elizabeth Nilsson (e.nilsson@greensborocc.org or (336) 691-5823). We will continue our search until the end of April 2019. W.H. Andrews Jr, Charles W. Angle, L. Caroll Atkisson, George W. Bradham, Kenneth Brugh Jr, Charles W. Causey, G. Neil Daniels, Fred C. Private Events at GCC Thank you for your continued support of the Club’s private event facilities. We are excited about the upcoming renovation to the Irving Park campus. During the renovation period, the Club will continue to offer private event space at Irving Park. The Ballroom, Irving Room and Granville Room will not be affected during this time, however other event space could be suspended at various times throughout the project.
The GCC Sprinter has become a welcome mode of travel for many members and their families, whether it is providing transportation to and from the Farm for youth activities including tennis and golf, or bringing a group of friends out to the Farm for Thursday night buffet. Other popular destinations have been PTI & RDU Airports, the Coliseum, Carolina Theatre, and multiple sporting events in and out of town. Let us sprint you wherever you need to be in style.
Hours of Operation
Tuesday - Saturday Sunday Monday
10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. No Transportation
The Private Events team’s goal is to accommodate all Member requests, so please plan ahead with your fall and Holiday entertaining needs. Thanksgiving is very late this year and the December holiday season will be shorter than 2018, so space and dates are limited. During the renovation period, please consider using the newly renovated Farm Clubhouse for your evening events. We will waive the Farm facility fees during this time to encourage the use of this beautiful venue. Taylor Hoffman, Private Events Manager (t.hoffman@ greensborocc.org) and Savannah Shafit, Private Events Coordinator (s.shafit@greensborocc.org) look forward to hearing from you soon to book your next event.

Dear Members, With the beginning of spring around the corner, the Greensboro Country Club culinary team is excited to bring a full new slate of menus for you to enjoy. On March 26th, the Sunset Dining Room will have a fresh seasonal menu makeover. We will continue to bring the best local provisions, fresh fish, prime beef, and Triad-farmed products that we can find in the area. As the warmer weather approaches, be sure to look for a stronger emphasis on lighter fare with bold flavors, more shareable foods and small plates. The 1909 and Family Grille will bring more than just a new menu this spring as our new Chef De Cuisine, Cassidy Benfield takes the lead of one of our busiest dining areas. Both menus will begin on April 2nd with items that continue to have a strong focus on traditional Club fare, Southern dishes and American classics. Other special upcoming events at the Club will include the Burgundy Wine Dinner on March 13th, the Krupp Wine Dinner on April 10th, and our very popular Easter Brunch, that will be offered at both the Irving Park and Farm campuses.

Hopefully everyone was able to see Executive Pastry Chef, Ben Shelton’s, 35lb. chocolate sculpture in honor of the new renovation project. It was amazing! As always, our team is better equipped to exceed your expectations with your feedback. Please feel free to call, send emails or leave comment cards. Have a great spring! Happy cooking, Shayne Taylor, CEC, CCA Executive Chef

Golf Update With spring right around the corner, we are all excited about the coming Golf Season! Your Golf Committee has put together a great calendar of events to capture the attention of all types of golfer. From seriously competitive golfers to those that enjoy the game solely for the social involvement, we have something for everyone. All events for the year are on the Club website on the Golf Calendar. With the exception of the Gentlemen’s President’s Cup and Member-Guest Invitational, all events are available for registration one month in advance.
The Ladies Golf Program has also had great success in using the Operation 36 platform. More than 50 ladies are expected to participate in the spring semester. The power behind the model is the success with beginning golfers, all the way to the most competitive. A roadmap exists for players to attain the highest level of skill they desire. Professional growth and development is a vital element of our Professional Staff. Providing the staff with the tools to continue to elevate their skills and experience is a wonderful thing about GCC! I am proud to tell you the Farm’s Head Golf Professional Brandon Nowak has recently attained a Specialty Certification in both Golf Operations and Teaching and Coaching! These certifications correlate to a “Master’s Degree” in The PGA of America’s education program. Congratulations, Brandon!
The success of our Junior Operation 36 Program continues to grow. This coming spring semester, we have added additional classes to support the growing demand. We expect to have in excess of 100 juniors participating! The Operation 36 model has been successful for GCC, in addition to the 300+ other clubs Bud Taylor, PGA around the country that are using the program. The Director of Golf challenge we set for our juniors is the score of 36 (par for 9 holes). By working from the green to tee versus the traditional tee-box to green it lowers the challenge Upcoming Events point, and is a motivating way to learn and progress in the sport. In addition, the use of the Operation 36 app Gentlemen’s Breakfast Tournament - March 16th | Farm tracks the practice and improvement of each junior to Ladies Golf Reception - March 19th | Irving Park add to the fun and excitement. Golf Tip "Turn" Your Game On There are no shortages of golf tips out there. I think that everyone is right, but not everyone is right for you right now. The same tip that cures a slice won't necessarily cure a hook. Use the curve of your golf ball to tell you which way you need to add some "turn." If your golf ball curves too much to the right try to add more "turn" to the right. When the ball curves right the swing path is left of your clubface. Turning your body more to the right away from the target on the backswing can help make it easier to swing down from the inside and reduce your slice. If your golf ball curves too much to the left then add some body "turn" to the left. The ball curves left when the swing path is to the right of your clubface. Turning your body more to the left through the shot will help your path arc back to the inside and even reduce some closing of the clubface to prevent the dreaded hook. With all golf tips remember that "what is perfect for you will always be unique to you." Let the curve of your golf ball tell you which direction you need to "turn" your body to hit more fairways and greens! Robbie Fritz Director of Instruction

Turf Talk For golfers in the Carolinas, March denotes the beginning of another golfing season. For Golf Course Superintendents, March signifies a time to wrap up winter improvement projects and begin to shift strategies and resources more towards cultural management and course conditioning. By early March we hope to have several projects completed. In addition to the routine winter equipment maintenance and the revitalization of golf course accessories, other projects the staff has been involved with over the last few months include several tree removals, grinding stumps and a few select new plantings. Several of the tree removals will eventually require sodding the remaining bare areas with warm season grasses but this work will not be completed until we can get suitable sod from our suppliers, which will most likely be in April or May depending on the weather.
March | April 2019
Two of the biggest cultural management tasks that take place in March are aerification and weed control. Greens are slower to heal during this time of the year due to cool soil temperatures but we aerify early in an attempt to have the greens in their best possible condition for the majority of the spring season.
Page 22
March is also the time of the year to begin putting down your pre-emergent weed control products for summer weeds. Our goal is to have our all our turf treated by the time the dogwoods begin to bloom. Between the two courses we treat nearly 230 acres of turf with weed control products and it takes us nearly three weeks from start to finish.
How’s the Bermudagrass?
It’s during this time of the year everyone begins asking whether or not I believe we have lost any Bermudagrass due to cold temperatures. As I am writing this letter in late January it is still too early to say. What I can say is the Ultradwarf greens appear to be in good health despite two cold snaps, and the weather we have experienced thus far has been nowhere close to the extreme lows we experienced in the 2017-18 winter. As it stands now, if we avoid any extremely cold conditions in March we should be in good shape coming out of the winter months. Doug Lowe, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance
