Report to the People F SUCCESS AT THE STATE LEVEL were enough to recommend someone for president of the United States, Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana would be among the frontrunners for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination. According to the governor's office, Pence has "signed into law $643 million in annual tax relief: That includes: $313 million for hardworking Hoosiers, thanks to last year's 5 percent income tax reduction, the largest state tax cut in Indiana history." In addition, the state corporate tax rate was reduced from 6.5 percent to 4.9 percent, making it the third lowest in the country and contributing to Indiana's increase in the labor force, which, Pence's office says, has grown by more than 51,000 over the past year, five times the national growth rate. It helps to have large majorities of one's party in the legislature, but Pence consults and has good relationships with Democrats, who frequently vote with the Republican majority because his programs work. Sitting with the governor in his high-ceiling office beneath portraits of two Indiana governors who became presidents of the United States -- William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison -- Pence tells me he is focused on the upcoming legislative session, which is expected to last four months, and won't think seriously about running for president until the session ends. Then, he says, "We'll probably take some time as a family to reflect and pray and make decisions about our future." In his mind, Pence may have already crafted a winning scenario. He may be focused on his state, but he thinks a lot about the country, which he served for 10 years as a congressman. A former Democrat (like his ideological mentor Ronald Reagan), Pence sees a need to transform his party's image: "The Republican Party has become just the other party to Washington solutions. We have to get back to advancing state-based solutions and reforms. We must be relentlessly optimistic." He paraphrases a Reagan line: "'Why shouldn't we dream great dreams, after all we're Americans.' There was a confidence and optimism I think our party would do well to repair to. ... There's a lot wrong with our national government, but we've got to stop confusing our national government with our nation." That's a good line for a stump speech. Pence wants to move from opposing bad ideas in Washington, to focusing on the success records in many states. For example, Pence's education agenda includes a goal of taking children in underperforming schools and putting them in good schools: "By the year 2020, I want 100,000 more Indiana students in high-quality schools than we have today. Today, we have 105,000 kids who are in underperforming or failing schools." He wants to fix traditional schools, pay good teachers more, giving bonuses to the best, and expand vocational education to every high school in the state. "We have the largest education voucher program in America. I want to expand that by lifting the cap and encouraging more private investment." Indiana also has 75 charter schools. Pence declines an invitation to comment on former Gov. Jeb Bush's recent remarks about having to lose the primary in order to win the general election, which many conservatives view as an attack on the party's base. If Hillary Clinton becomes the Democratic Party's presidential nominee, I asked, is she beatable? Pence answers indirectly, saying he thinks 2016 will be the first foreign policy election since 1980 and that as a former secretary of state, Clinton will have some advantages. That's why he thinks the eventual GOP nominee should do as George W. Bush did in 2000: name a group of advisers with strong foreign policy credentials to advise him during a campaign and, if he is successful, some might serve in his administration. Mike Pence is a model of humility and restraint. While some characterize Obama as a failed president, Pence will only label his tenure "disappointing." That in itself is in sharp contrast to the hubris, narcissism and self-awareness of Obama. Humility, coupled with a proven track record of success and more confidence in the states and the people, is what's needed at the national level. Mike Pence could be the one to bring it.

interpersonal edge Customer Not Always Right, But He’s Never Wrong

Q. I’VE TRIED to explain to an important customer that he misunderstood our policies when he hired my company. The customer just can’t admit he was wrong and is now talking to my boss, and I’m in trouble. How did this end up my fault? A. Implying, hinting or telling people they’re “wrong” is right up there with telling them they are inadequate, bad or stupid. Obviously, we can’t be human and not possess these weaknesses. Even so, using these words is the equivalent of declaring war. As a communication consultant, I’m often called in when these “fighting” words have been used. By the time I arrive, little work is getting done because the conflict is now about everyone’s wounded self-esteem. I always start out these mediations by asking each party what they’d like to fix the problem. They often don’t re-

member what they wanted because they’re now just focused on making the other person the bad guy. Your customer is actually not upset he misunderstood the policy. He’s upset you think he’s wrong. You are equally involved in proving yourself right which means he’s really wrong. To solve your dilemma, think outside of the right and wrong box. Instead, try imagining what outcome everybody might want. Your customer really wants to use your service and get what he needs without being “wrong.” Your boss wants you to make your customer happy and let your customer know what your company can do. You want to make your customer and your boss happy. Nobody needs to be wrong. Try focusing on the present; ask questions about what your customer wants now and what you can do now.

Don’t get into heated debates about what can’t be changed and who screwed up. If your customer is ridiculously entitled, all you needed to do was to take all his requests to your own boss for their final approval or denial.

Important customers who won’t respond to normal limits shouldn’t be told they’re wrong; they should be talking to your boss. In dealing with mistakes in the workplace try to keep in mind that to err is human, and to focus on the end goal is divine.

HIS WEEK, ROLLING STONE PRINTED an editor's note retracting one of the most highly praised pieces of investigative journalism in its history. That piece, written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, alleged that several members of the University of Virginia

fraternity Phi Kappa Psi, had raped a 19-year-old student named Jackie, including with foreign objects, as she lay on a floor covered with broken glass. The article resulted in the university suspending the fraternity's activities, and national outrage over the so-called "rape culture" on campus. That rape culture supposedly leads to one in five women being sexually assaulted on campus -- a faulty statistic from a poll that didn't even ask women if they were raped or sexually assaulted, and instead defined sex while inebriated at any level as rape. Nonetheless, the narrative of women as victims of brutish male society must be forwarded at all costs, for political purposes. If Americans are brutish sexists waiting to rape unsuspecting women, bigger government becomes a necessity. That's why President Obama has cited that onein-five statistic, and suggested that America experiences "quiet tolerance of sexual assault." In order to forward that narrative, all rape stories are treated as fact sans investigation of any kind. And so Jackie's story of gang rape received plaudits across the media landscape. Then it fell apart. The Washington Post quickly debunked the story. According to the Post, the fraternity says there was no event the night Jackie was allegedly raped, Jackie's friends "have not been able to verify key points in recent days," and one of the men named in Jackie's report stated that "he never met Jackie in person and never took her out on a date." As the Rolling Stone report collapsed, members of the left jumped to defend Jackie. Sally Kohn of CNN.com tweeted that people should stop questioning Jackie's story: "While aspects of UVA rape story now in question, still unsettles me that pouncing by skeptics mirrored sort of doubt rape victims often face." Feminist Melissa McEwan wrote, "If Jackie's story is partially or wholly untrue, it doesn't validate the reasons for disbelieving her." Under this logic, Atticus Finch was the villain in "To Kill a Mockingbird." After all, how dare he question the rape allegations of a victimized woman and defend Tom Robinson? But for the left, it's narrative first, facts second. The same holds true regarding allegations made by HBO star Lena Dunham, who wrote of her own alleged rape at the hands of an Oberlin "college Republican" named Barry. When it turned out that Barry, a readily identifiable person from Dunham's days at Oberlin, did

DEAR EDITOR: I have not always agreed with Mr. Shapiro’s opinions. However, he has usually presented reasonable arguments in defense of his positions. Sadly that was lacking in his November 25th article entitled “Days of Rage”. Mr. Shapiro tries to smear the thousands that had demonstrated against the killing of Mr. Brown as “utopian visionaries” and “violent thugs”. The overwhelming majority of the protests were peaceful. Like many people I question officer Wilson’s account of what happened on that tragic day. I also think there should have been a public investigation and trial to examine the shooting. In Mr. Ferguson’s eyes that would make me a “utopian visionary” and maybe even a “thug”. To begin with Mr. Ferguson tries to raise the “fear of the black man” argument by pointing out that Mr. Brown was 6’ 5” and weighed 289 lbs. Mr. Ferguson did not say how much Officer Wilson weighed, his height or what weapons he was equipped with. Mr. Shapiro also relies totally on Officer Wilson’s account of what happened

to support his arguments. Neither Mr. Shapiro nor I were at the scene of the shooting. Therefore, neither one of us can conclusively say what happened on that tragic day. The only one who knows what really happened is God. Mr. Shapiro also states “Alongside the anti-Racist White Establishment protestors taking to the streets in Ferguson in recent weeks, anti-Israel and pro-ISIS protestors have appeared”. In none of the coverage of the demonstration in Ferguson or elsewhere did I see any anti-Israeli or pro-ISIS demonstrators. Mr. Shapiro does not provide any evidence to back up this claim. This is a blatant attempt by Mr. Shapiro to ferment bias against those speaking out against the shooting of Mr. Brown. In the end Mr. Shapiro dismisses everyone who has questions about what happened in Ferguson as “ragers”. Obviously Mr. Shapiro wants what happened in Ferguson to be swept under the rug and not discussed. I’m sorry Mr. Shapiro that is not going to happen. H, THE FRENCH. They look gorgeous till they die. They have sex eight days a week, half the time with Gerard Depardieu. (Unless ... I may have that wrong.) And the food! Pates and freshly baked baguettes and coq au vin simmering till the coqs come home!

Or so I thought. But guess what you can find in every town in France. "Cheese shops?" asked my friend. Well, yes, I'm sure there are cheese shops. And cafes. And young boys on bikes delivering tarts before school, their berets bobbing in the breeze. But what there also are, mon ami, are frozen-food shops. Groceries filled with only frozen food. "In France, freezers are much smaller, and yet there are probably 1,000 Picard stores," says Elisabeth de Kergorlay, a French native. Picard stores, she goes on to explain, are a chain of shops devoted solely to frozen food. And beyond Picard, there are Picard's frozen competitors. France is awash in rock-solid food. Who knew? Not we Americans. So de Kergorlay set out to change that. This past summer, she opened Babeth's Feast, the first all-frozen French-tinged grocery in America. Not surprisingly, it's in New York City, in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods on the planet: the Upper East Side. And this past week, she invited some lucky reporters to come check it out, as well as taste the store's offerings.

To prove it, a chef in the shop's kitchen prepared a dinner of previously frozen soup, potato puffs, steak, Brussels sprout casserole and chocolate souffles. How were they? Yummy. Indistinguishable to this palate (which, admittedly, recently had oral surgery) from freshly prepared. They're also kind of pricey. A main course can run $19.99 to serve three or four. Side dishes are about $10. So are Americans ready to upscale their frozen food options? My guess is yes. We've already embraced better coffee, better bread, better chocolate. Better living through finer frozen food could well be next. Although, better living through looking gorgeous till you die would be my first choice, if given the option.

Divorced Mom Struggles By Parenting Halfway By Amy Dickinson

DEAR AMY: I am divorced and have two young children. Their father and I share equal custody. I have had a boyfriend for a year. He has a young child of his own and we all live together as a blended family. This man is kind, sensitive, supportive and loving -everything my ex-husband was not. There's one problem. My kids tend to act up a lot and I'm not sure why. His child NEVER acts up. She's helpful, listens, is easygoing, etc. My kids are the exact opposite! This past year, my boyfriend has really been working with my kids on discipline and setting good examples, and so have I. I am an easygoing person but their dad is not. I think they get this trait from him. I don't really know what goes on when they're with him. When they come back to us, I feel like we're going backward. My daughter (age 10) doesn't act her age -- she whines like a 3-year-old, is unhelpful around the house and with her younger brother, etc. Now my boyfriend is showing hostility toward ME because of their behavior. I honestly do my best at disciplining them, but because his child is "perfect" he does not understand. I know I'm trying but he doesn't see that. What should I do? -- Challenged Mom DEAR MOM: You should take your kids' behavior not as a sign that they are "bad," but that they are very stressed. Your daughter's regression does not mean that she is immature, but having trouble coping. You should establish consistent routines, make sure they get plenty of healthy food and sleep, and treat them with firm, unflappable, loving kindness. Their routine of switching households is extremely challenging (could you do it?). You, not your boyfriend, should be the primary disciplinarian. Let him teach you how. Your whole crew could benefit from some professional mentoring. The kids need to see your family as a "team," with good days and bad days -- but always on the same side. Most important, your daughter should get some private counseling with a child therapist. Because you are not willing/able to communicate with her father, you should make sure she is safe and well cared for when she is in his household. Her behavior could be a red flag that there is a serious problem. DEAR AMY: I have had a friend, "Margaret," for 18 years. We are both over 50 years old and have shared many important life-changing events. On her birthday, she had a party at her house. I arrived early to help out and parked in front of her house, as I have done for the past 18 years. Unbeknownst to me, there is a new restricted parking zone in that spot. I got a $50 ticket! I felt furious, betrayed and shocked that Margaret had not informed me or warned me not to park there. She told me privately that she would pay half of the ticket. The due date came and went, I paid the ticket, and nothing more was said. The other day, I made a remark about the $50 and she rolled her eyes. That would have been the perfect moment to offer to help pay. She has never apologized. I would never let this happen to a friend. This is interfering with my trust and good feelings toward her, and I am leaning toward cutting back on the friendship, or ending it. Is this grounds to end a friendship? -- Betrayed in Denver DEAR BETRAYED: If you believe this incident is grounds to end an intimate 18-year friendship, then you must have lots of other long-term friends waiting in the wings. Consider this to be one more of the many challenges you two have weathered together. Explain that you are disappointed. And roll out of the red zone.

ENCOUNTERS One Terrifying Fall Night By: athenarusso@verizon.net

THIS STORY HAPPENED about 78 years ago in a newly built house. One fall night, while I was a freshman in high school, my mother and father went out for the evening and I was babysitting my sister. I was on the phone for quite a while talking to my boyfriend, when my dog started barking by the downstairs door, letting me know she wanted to go outside. I need to give a little description on how my house was laid out. My house was a bi-level and to put the dog outside on the chain to do her “business” you have to go down the stairs into the basement (there’s a door to get into the basement) (this part is the den), then out through another basement door (which is the garage part of the basement), and then out another basement door, which would take you outside. So, I went down through all the doors and put my dog on the chain, which is right outside the basement (outside) door. I closed all the doors after me. About 20 minutes later and still on the phone with my boyfriend, I heard my dog barking outside, but was too lazy to run downstairs to get her. A few minutes later I heard her growling, but again figured she had just seen a rabbit or deer or something like that outside. Then about 20 seconds later I heard something downstairs in the basement. So as I am still on the phone I see my dog running up the steps. I figured my parents were home so I went into the kitchen and looked out the window to the driveway but there was no car there. I then noticed my dog had something around her neck, which was the collar and part of the chain that we put her on to go outside (about a foot of it). She was also acting really strange, jumping around me and barking and stuff. So suffice to say, I was petrified! I then heard some sort of smashing glass downstairs in the basement and grabbed the phone (and a knife) and the dog and ran into the room where my sister was sleeping and closed and locked the door. I then went to tell my boyfriend (who was on the phone through all of this) to call the police – but when I picked it up no one was on the phone. So I clicked over to the dial tone and when I went to dial I could here all these weird sounds on the phone, like voices mumbling. Since it was a portable phone, I figured it was some interference, so I used the regular phone in mine and my sister’s room to try to call someone but the same thing happened with the mumbling voices. Throughout this time my dog is hysterical. This went on for about an hour. All the time hearing footsteps, doors closing, sounds directly beneath the bedroom in the basement, and bumps against the bedroom door. As you could imagine, I wasn’t about to open the bedroom door to get out of the house. After the hour passed, I didn’t hear anything else but still the same thing for the phone. Finally I heard footsteps again and can recognize my mothers frantic yell and can hear my father calling out our names. So when they came to the bedroom door I opened it. And my mother was completely pale and obviously shaken. She asked me why all the doors in the house were wide open and all the windows in the house were in the up position. When we went downstairs there was no broken glass like I had heard. I told them what happened, but then after that day my mom told me not to talk about it anymore. I think “it” scared the life out of her too. This is one story of many that happened in this house throughout my childhood. ©theshadowlands.net
