F YOU WON'T STAND FOR SOMETHING, you will fall for anything." -- quote attributed

to numerous sources - Historically, when our nation has transitioned from one way of life to another, there has usually been some optimism about what was to come. That was true at the time of the American Revolution and it was true as we moved from an agrarian society toward the Industrial Revolution in the mid-18th through mid-19th centuries.

Even during World War II, the song "White Cliffs of Dover" with its lyric "There'll be love and laughter and peace ever after. Tomorrow, when the world is free," looked forward to a better day. It didn't quite turn out that way, as wars persist, but optimism kept us going with the hope that a new and better world was about to dawn.

Today we are gripped not by optimism but by a deep pessimism, even cynicism, that permeates virtually every layer of our culture. According to a Real Clear Politics Poll, more than 66 percent of those surveyed think this country is headed in the wrong direction, yet like a man who is lost but refuses to ask for directions, we keep barreling full steam ahead.

While politics has always been a rhetorical combat sport, the insults thrown by Donald Trump and his supporters have taken political discourse -- if it can even be called that -- to a new and depressing low. Such language keeps us from solving, or even discussing, the real problems this country faces.

A book by an "anonymous congressman," titled "Confessions of Congressman X," is scheduled for publication on May 24, according to Daily Mail.com. In it, the writer, who is reportedly a man and a Democrat, mocks the country he supposedly serves as a "nation of naive, self-absorbed sheep." He says he and most of his colleagues never read the bills they vote on and spend most of their time raising money.

"My main job," he writes, "is to keep my job, to get re-elected. It takes precedence over everything."

Given the behavior and history of so many members of Congress, who doubts his claim?

It was thought once that our leaders should possess good character. In this election, however, it appears voters will be forced to choose for president -- if they vote at all -- between a boastful, superficial, narcissistic, misogynist and a corrupt, entitled, shady, lying, unaccomplished woman who has ignored her husband's affairs in the pursuit of power.

Are these two candidates a reflection of our cynical and increasingly secular culture? They must be, otherwise so many voters would not have propelled them to the top of their respective parties. If we are willing to settle for less than the best, we can be sure that less is exactly what we will get.

Another character quality that is in decline is modesty. A new Calvin Klein ad features an "upskirt" photo of a young woman's underwear. Victoria's Secret catalogs and shopping mall displays, visible to children, feature barely clad women with "come hither" stares. Some of the sexiest films ever made were produced during Hollywood's "Golden Age" when women and men kept on most of their clothes.

Films and TV today go for the blatant, mainstreaming sex scenes, flaunting nudity, so much so that a movie's "R" rating could just as easily stand for "raunchy" as "restricted."

Scriptwriters put words in the mouths of actresses that "would make a sailor blush," as the old saying goes. Yet, we are supposed to regard this as progress and equality.

Do I sound "old-fashioned"? There is something to be said about old things. Some things endure because they have proven to work for the individual and for society at large. Nations built to last generally do; nations allowed to rot from within do just that.

ENCOUNTERS The Little Dog THIS STORY IS completely true and real. It may not sound scary but it was freaky to me. Okay here it goes. I had just gotten out of college and after staying at my parents and looking for a house to rent, I found a nice house about thirty miles away from my parent's house.

On moving day, I was packing my belongings inside my father's Uhaul he had rented. My mother was in the van already with my younger brother. I was just getting in when I heard a whimper under the van so I peeked under. I saw a little black dog. I've always been an animal lover so I reached under the car to pick it up. It immediately started growling at me. So I pulled back a little. Then, it started coming out towards me and wagging it's tail. After I persuaded it with a piece of meat it let me pick it up. My little brother was so excited to see a dog that he jumped out of the van and started petting it.

I was allowed to have pets in the house but there was something I didn't like about this dog once I had picked it up. I looked for an identification tag but all I could find on the mutt was a cross necklace carved out of wood. Then I noticed the cross had flames engraved and painted on it. I reached to take the necklace off; when I touched it the finger I touched it with started burning and hurting badly. I howled with fright, surprise, and pain. When I let go of the necklace the pain went away.

My mother hopped out of the van and started inquiring over what had happened. When I told her what had happened she didn't believe me so she patted the frightened dog in my hands and then touched the cross. She screamed and when she screamed her eyes turned fiery red until she let go of the cross.

I put the dog down instantly but when I put it down it started barking madly and growling. It ran up to my little brother and bit him. In my brother's defense he smacked the dog upside the head. When he did the dog howled - he had thrown the dog clear across our driveway - the dog's howl sounded so awful. My dad ran into the garage and grabbed a shovel. The dog started running towards me and just before he bit me my dad whacked him in the head with a shovel. The dog hit the concrete and blood started coming out of his nose. My dad threw it into our small pond to drown it.

We instantly all got into the van without talking. We didn't talk until about five miles left to the house. It was my brother who spoke. He said I don't like that dog. We all agreed. I said I think I'm going to get a nice dog from a pet store not a pound. We got to the house and my dad parked and was about to get out when he saw a little dog with a cross on it's neck. Q. I WORK WITH some people who are really mean spirited. At every opportunity they vilify others, assign blame and bully. What have I done wrong to deserve this treatment?

A. What you are doing wrong is believing that how other people act is dependent on what you deserve or don’t deserve. People act as they do because of their own demons - not because you are a deserving demon.

If you stop believing you have somehow brought on this barrage of bad behavior, you’ll be more effective at navigating mean people. The writer Henry David Thoreau said, “Most people live lives of very quiet desperation.” I would disagree. At present, many people live lives of

However, most tragedies befall us because we are not paying attention and we’re making bad decisions. You have to ask yourself what is motivating a person who thinks their challenges are your problem.

DEAR AMY: My 19-year-old son has had an issue his whole life: He never cleans his room!

We started giving him an allowance when he was 10, but we didn't give him the allowance if he didn't do his homework or clean his room.

So he didn't. We have given him a car, and the freedom to do whatever he wants, if only he would keep his room free of trash, but it hasn't worked. His car is trashed, too! We would like to sell the house, but his bedroom floor is now warped and the walls are ruined.

He has a college fund and extra money. He works part time. He says he can't work more hours, due to school, but he still skips classes.

We've said he needs to decide if he wants to go away for school and move out next fall.

I left home when I was 17. I worked full time. It took me 25 years to get my degree. My husband did it when he was 18. We would prefer to support him through his goals. Any ideas on how to get him to respect us enough to clean his room and car?

-- Furious Mom DEAR MOM: Let's review: You chose to (essentially) pay your son to do his homework and clean his room (things he should do, anyway). And because you tied his allowance to these things, his logic was, "Why bother doing homework and cleaning my room? I don't need any allowance. Because I'm 10!"

You and your husband are still treating your son like he is 10, providing everything -- except consequences. Now you are blaming him for being a lazy slob. Your choices as parents have created this mess. This is on you.

Give your son the advantage that you had at his age -- of being on his own, supporting himself and figuring things out.

No more tuition. If he is skipping classes, then he isn't ready for college. Then he will have plenty of time to work a 40-hour week, just like everybody else, and rent a room in someone else's house, where there might be real consequences for damaging property.

If you want to be extra nice, you could kick in for his car insurance, but other than that, he will have to establish his own goals, and see what it's like to be in charge of his own life.

And you need to let him.

DEAR AMY: My husband was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer.

Rather than answer constant phone calls, we chose to send out a regular summary via email. This very personal and sensitive notice was sent only to family members and close friends.

Imagine our horror when we learned that a good friend of ours had forwarded one of these updates to the president of an organization my husband belongs to.

She instructed them to forward it to all organization members, and they did! This friend also said she would forward regular updates.

The "friend" said she did it because so many people in the organization care about us. We are having great difficulty getting close to forgiveness.

Would most people forgive this easily? Can you help us get rid of our anger and learn to forgive?

-- Want to Forgive DEAR WANT TO FORGIVE: Must you forgive this person so quickly? What she did was an outrageous violation, and she seems to have justified it, rather than apologize and ask for forgiveness.

Work on releasing your anger. Punch a pillow or two. Hold hands and breathe deeply. Your anger keeps you in a tough place, right when you need your strength and resilience.

Don't give her more of yourself than she deserves to have.

Tell her, "We're having a tough time recovering from the way you chose to violate our privacy. We'd appreciate an apology." Strike her off all future group communication. Add a coda to your regular emails, saying, "Please do not share this information with others."
