Cancer from phones: Smartphones, flip phones and their predecessors give off a form of energy known as radiofrequency, or RF. As the amount of time spent on phones has increased, concerns have been raised as to the possible health ramifications of RF exposure on the body. The American Cancer Society says RF waves are a form of non-ionizing radiation. They are different from the stronger, ionizing types of radiation that can affect the chemical structure of DNA in the body. But there is some concern that RF may con-

Mobile device use and social media addiction: Increased use of technology may be linked to decreases in attention and increases in behavior and self-regulation problems for adolescents already at risk for mental health problems, says a study from Duke University. One hundred fifty-one adolescents were studied using digital technologies for an average of 2.3 hours a day. The researchers found that, on days when adolescents used their devices more, both when they exceeded their own normal use and when they exceeded average use by their peers, they were more likely to exhibit conduct problems such as lying and fighting. Cellphones, Shotguns, and No Regrets From a Fed Up Southern Momma

ARENTING IS FILLED WITH HAND-WRINGING, second-guessing and "what-if" quandaries. For example, "What if I let my teenage daughter have a party while I'm away?" and "What if I let my son drive all his friends to the concert this weekend?" Or, in the case of Moreland, Ga., resident Deborah Smith, "What if I blow up my kids' cellphones with a 12-gauge shotgun and post the carnage on YouTube?" Two years ago, Smith, 57, became a viral celebrity by doing just that. And despite an eventual visit from the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services questioning her parenting skills, and sons who have had subsequent brushes with the law, Smith said she'd do it again in a heartbeat. "I tried conventional methods to deal with their phone abuse, to no avail," she said. "They were using a phone I paid for to do drug deals." The video concluded a family meeting, something Smith said are common in her house, which has, over the years, served as shelter for 45 troubled foster kids. Clad in a sleeveless gray T-shirt, Smith cocked her weapon and boldly proclaimed, "I hereby denounce the effects that social media have on my children. Their disobedience and disrespect." As her three legally adopted teens, McKenzie, Ethan and Robbie, looked on, Smith obliterated a phone, perched on a nearby tree stump, with a single blast. A fourth child, Josh, recorded the incident on his phone, eventually panning to Ethan, who responded by flipping the bird and screaming obscenities at Smith. Kids, a word of advice: That's never a good idea when Mom is armed. And, as the video proves, an expert marksperson. Undeterred, Smith continued. "I refuse to be cursed. I refuse to be disobeyed. I take back my role as your parent," she screamed at the camera. A second blast destroyed a second phone. Switching to a sledgehammer, Smith sent shrapnel from the third phone flying through all parts of Coweta County. Without Smith's knowledge, Josh uploaded the video to YouTube where, after some initial trepidation, Smith approved the decision and laughed at the footage. Steven, her husband of 34 years, laughed as well. Meanwhile, media outlets couldn't get enough. Some dubbed Smith "Southern Momma." Smith and bird-flipping Ethan flew to California for an appearance on "The Robert Irvine Show." Parents around the world wrote to Smith, gushing over her unorthodox mothering methods and revealing personal battles with their kids' cellphone and social media habits. Smith admits the attention went to her head. "I didn't set out to do anything other than to prove my point, which is, you don't use social media to act like an idiot," she said. "And I acted like an idiot." Smith was referring to a second video, showing her obliterating the mattresses from the beds of Ethan and Robbie after they failed to come home. "They're out using drugs with their drug thug buddies," said Smith, as she loaded the trusty 12-gauge. That incident brought out DFCS, which temporarily removed all of Smith's children while presenting her with a written "safety plan," including a promise not to discharge weapons in front of her kids. Citing her Second Amendment rights, Smith taped the plan to a TV set and, in a third video, shot it as well. Despite her trigger-happy nature, Smith said the videos had positive effects on her children, although some continue to struggle. Referring to McKenzie, now 19 and a Georgia college student, Smith said, "She'll tell you that video changed her life because she learned Momma was serious. She straightened up her act. I'm very proud of her." Ethan, 18, was recently released from jail after serving nine months for breaking and entering. He performs lawn maintenance and, in Smith's words, "kind of" lives with the family. But, since being released, he has chosen not to own a phone. "He realizes he's better off without it," Smith said. Robbie, also 18, is in jail after being convicted of stealing guns from his adopted uncle's house. She hopes for the best when he returns. "He had a lacrosse scholarship waiting for him," Smith said. Now battling breast cancer, Smith has put foster parenting on hold. But she still feels the videos were the right solution, a sentiment confirmed by none other than Ethan. “He said, 'I wish I would have listened,'" Smith said.

Let’s consider the technique of ignoring a drama king. A drama king excels at sucking up all the attention in the room. He does this by creating emotional intensity that others feel they have to respond to. You can see that silence and exiting stage left are perfectly useful responses to this behavior. What I do not recommend is engaging in a power struggle with your drama king, pointing out his bad behavior or trying to calm him down. This gives your co-worker exactly what he is seeking. When people are acting badly you want to be conscious to never reward this behavior. Keep in mind that anything that lets you leave his presence is fair. Perhaps you have urgent bathroom visits, forgotten meetings or important calls. If he starts to escalate and you habitually disappear, he will learn you are not going to play office drama games. Office dramas always take more than just one person to sustain emotional intensity. When you find any reason to disengage, your drama king may still attempt to create a scene but probably not around you. If you leave your peace of mind in the hands of everyone you work with you’ll be mad and very disappointed most of the time. The biggest trick of all is to take responsibility for your own peace of mind regardless of what all the others are doing. Figure out what you need and work backward on how to make that happen. Do not underestimate the power of changing your own behavior to guarantee you reduce the chaos and drama around you.

DEAR AMY: My son-in-law is a physician at a large hospital. He is exceptionally smart and well regarded, but he's also incredibly dumb at the same time. His errors, goofs and mistakes have gotten so bad, that we often think twice before inviting him and my daughter anywhere. He is a one-man debacle. In only the last few months, he's started a kitchen fire in their house, fallen down the stairs (injuring himself), backed his car out through their closed garage door and flooded his backyard by forgetting to turn the sprinklers off. Over Memorial Day weekend, they came to our lake house. In just three days, he lost his car keys, shattered an antique, burnt an entire meal on the grill and created unnecessary drama by miscommunicating our plans to several other family members. My daughter seems to think his absent-mindedness is charming, but my wife and I do not. He does not drink excessively or have any medical issues. I've asked him to please be more careful, and it doesn't seem to stick. We are planning a family vacation. My wife and I have considered not inviting them, because we want to keep our stress down, but this feels cruel. We love having our big family around us, but I won't have yet another vacation wrecked because of his foibles. How do I address this? -- Worried Dad DEAR WORRIED: You say your son-in-law does not drink excessively or have any medical issues, but how do you know? Have you conducted a neuro exam or tested him for drugs or other intoxicants? One or even a few of these incidents could be chalked up to stress, exhaustion or absent-mindedness. The picture you paint, however, is alarming. I realize that you find this mainly annoying on your own behalf, but I hope you will speak, and act, out of concern for his health. Tell him (and your daughter) that you are worried because his coordination (and perhaps, cognition) seems to be getting worse. If he dismisses this, recount some recent incidents, and ask him what conclusion he might draw if a patient came to him with these issues. Urge him to get a thorough checkup. He could have a serious neurological illness that he manages or masks while he is at work, but which flares when he is outside of his normal routine and surroundings. My understanding of neurological disorders is only anecdotal, but I believe that some of the behavior you describe could be linked to very serious illness. He could also be drinking, or taking drugs, behind the garage. Your concerns are valid. DEAR AMY: Many years ago, when I was a teen, I took $20 from my friend. My friend confronted me. I denied it, and we never really spoke about it again. She was my neighbor, and our families were very close. We still keep in touch. I have not seen the friend in many years, but I have seen other family members, and my theft is always on my mind. Of course, I feel foolish admitting that I did this dumb thing. Should I apologize and repay the $20 after all these years, or should I just forget about it? -- Worried DEAR WORRIED: If I told you to just forget about this, would you? Haven't you tried to forget about this theft? No, you won't forget about it, so you should own it, admit it, make amends and ask to be understood and forgiven. I hope you will contact your friend. Tell her that you are embarrassed that you stole from her and then lied about it. Don't offer up an excuse, but do explain yourself (if you have an explanation). Your friend's $20 would be worth close to $50 now. You should send her a check. If you can afford to, you could also donate the same amount to a local charity -- perhaps one benefiting wayward teens.

I'VE LIVED IN MY HOUSE for about 3 years now, and I've thought from the day we moved in that it was haunted, or at least really creepy. It's an older home (built in 1952). The couple that built it, lived in it until the man died sometime in the late 90's (in the house, I believe), then his widow lived here alone until her son decided she needed to be closer to him, so he sold the house (to me), and we moved in. I have seen things out of the corner of my eye. We had a cat that pretty much went crazy living here, and just weird feelings. The most annoying thing is when things will disappear from a spot that I KNOW I put them only to turn up in that exact spot, minutes, hours, or sometimes days later. The most recent event was just this past weekend. My 16 year old step daughter had been here for the summer but it was time for her to go back home. She gathered up all of her belongings and we all got in the car to head out on the 5 hour road trip to take her home. At the last minute she realized that she had left her wallet in the house so she ran in to get it. Only it was no where to be found. We all got out of the car and came into the house and searched and searched the entire house. We emptied clothes baskets looked under couch cushions, moved furniture ... everything. We looked for it for nearly 2 hours. The wallet was nowhere to be found. We then assumed that she had left it in the car earlier in the day and that someone had walked by and helped themselves to it. We don't live in the greatest neighborhood, so this was a feasible explaination. There was nothing we could do about it at that point so, we headed off to take her home, talking nearly the entire way about how brazen someone had to be to take it out of our car in broad daylight, but still convinced that was the case. My husband, myself and our 5 year old returned home the next day and I still just couldn't get the idea out of my head that the wallet had to be somewhere in the house. So I looked some more, and everytime I went into a room I would move stuff around and just do a "sweep" of the area to see if it turned up. It did not. Until two days later. I walked in the front door from work at around 4:30 pm, and right in the middle of the coffee table sticking out from under a hat (that had not been on the table at all the day the wallet was originally missing) was the wallet. It was sticking out enough for me to see it, so I know if it had been there originally I would have noticed it. I had been home sometime around noon for lunch that same day and the wallet was not there, and no one else had been home all day. I was the last one to leave that morning and the first one to get home that evening. Let me tell you, it totally creeped me out. My theory is that our ghost took a liking to my step daughter and didn't want her to leave so he hid the thing he knew she would not want to leave without.
