matrix," which depicts powerful machines attempting to subdue the human

race. sometimes art imitates life, and sometimes it's the other way around.

On occasion, art can be prophetic. "the matrix" is such a film. it warns of a future in which the power and worth of the individual is subsumed into one giant interconnected world run by a tiny elite, who rob individuals of their liberty and ability to think freely. in his new book, "World without mind: the existential threat of Big tech" (Penguin Press), Franklin Foer, a national correspondent for the atlantic and former editor of the new republic, expands on the film's warnings. Foer asserts that technology is replacing thought and relationships. he specifically warns of the goals of Google, Facebook, amazon and other corporate tech giants, charging them with being "monopolists who want access to every facet of our identities and influence over every corner of our decision-making." sometimes employing language that recalls ancient biblical prophecies and the end times foreseen in revelation, Foer warns these companies eventually want to insert devices in our bodies to allow others to think for us. "Google Glass and the apple Watch," he says, "prefigure the day when these companies implant their artificial intelligence within our bodies." how will this be "sold" to the public? Foer writes it will be sold just like any other product or service: "... they justify monopoly with their well-articulated belief that competition undermines our pursuit of the common good and ambitions."

CAN WE ALL AGREE ON SOMETHING? Food brings us happiness and comfort. Whether it's a big juicy burger or your favorite slice of pizza, nothing beats sitting down and having your mouth water over some delicious food. But what some people don't realize is that it is the salt, spice or sugar that triggers your mouth to water. Yes, these ingredients bring out the best in all the food we eat, so wouldn't it be great to have a local store dedicated to making your mouth water? The Steel City Salt Co. founded by young owner John will be holding their Grand Opening at 206 Grant Avenue in Millvale on August 18. With a strong interest in cooking and unusual ingredients, John set out to find the most unique salts from around the world. From flaky to fine, moist to dry, he only chooses the best from each region. His business started in 2014 as a small table in the Strip District and has since developed into a strong online store, specialty boutiques and now their very own brick and mortar store. With over 50 salts and spices, Steel City Salt Co. has a flavor for every one of your taste buds. John developed an interest in salt as a young boy. His grandfather, who is from Sicily, would always use sicilian salt. John was intrigued by the different design and color and quickly developed a passion for taste. He started in the restaurant business when he was 13, working for Groceria Italiana in Bloomfield. At 16 he started cooking for Piccolo Forno in Lawrenceville and learned to make food from scratch. It was there he realized the importance of salt and spices. If there is one thing universal shared in the food industry around the world...it's salt. The importance of this commodity is overlooked and taken for granted. Many of us just slap on some table salt and garlic powder and we are ready to go. But once I met with John, tasted his salts and realized what I have been missing, I had to buy some. It has drastically changed the taste of eggs, chicken and vegetables. Did you know salt could be good with desserts? Steel City's expresso salt is the perfect partner for ice cream, brownies, cookies and other tasty treats ... sounds delicious right? My number one question for John was "how do you make salt?" He explained to me that it's a lot of trial and error. He makes all the salt in house and has become very knowledgeable on how to combine different salts to meet a desired taste. My personal favorite is either the Sriracha Salt or Black & Gold, both perfect for grilled meat. But not all salts are used for cooking and desserts. John and Steel City Salt Co. have exactly what you need to make your alcoholic drink taste better. I'll leave it to him to show you more about that. Steel City Salt Co's brand new store, which used to be the old post office in Millvale, has been completely renovated to a warm and inviting store that will ... yes ... have your mouth watering. All of their products are neatly displayed with detailed descriptions. I would compare it to walking into a candle shop...you can't help but to lift the lids and smell them all. You can sample many of the salts and John is more than happy to guide you on which salts and spices go best with different foods. John's wife, Candy, is from Peru, and has been a big help fulfilling his longtime goal of opening his own shop where he could make the salts, distribute and sell all under one roof. Before, John was running back and forth between three locations, all while managing his booth in the Strip. From making the salt to applying the label on the package, John and Candy are the only two people making it all happen from start to finish. Steel City Salt Co.has a bright future in Millvale. John sees many ways where he can grow his business. He wants to eventually hold cooking classes at his new retail space. The business is unique in many ways and you can see all that at their Grand Opening on August 18. The salts also make for a perfect gift, so stop by Friday-Sunday during their soft opening going on now for a peek into this sweet...I mean salty business. DON’T QUIT ON THE PIRATES AFTER DROPPING THE SERIES to the Cardinals this past weekend, the Pirates look to chase another team in front of them in the Wild Card standings, the Rockies. With a little under two months of baseball left, it's all hands on deck every game. The Pirates are in a battle with seven other teams for two Wild Card spots. It may seem like a stretch, but the Pirates are just as equipped as the other teams in front of them. The addition of Chris Archer and Keone Kela have reinforced areas that needed patching up. The Chris Archer deal not only improves the team this year but the next few years as well. The most important aspect of making a run at the playoffs is pitching. The Pirates made the necessary moves to increase their chances.

For those of you who may be saying it's too late, don't give up on watching this Pirate team. Since the All Star break the Pirates rank 3rd in the National League for pitching and 7th in batting. There is plenty of baseball to be played. Nineteen of their remaining twenty-one games in August will come against opponents with a winning record. Although this may appear challenging, it gives the Pirates a chance to take down the teams in front of them. We will all know by the end of August what this team is made of. WHOSE STATUE GOES UP FIRST? STEELERS QUARTERBACK Ben Roethlisberger and Penguins center Sidney Crosby have been the two most notable faces in Pittsburgh sports the past two decades. When it comes to value, each player is deeply missed when not on the playing surface. Ben has been to three Super Bowls, winning two of them and Crosby has been to five Stanley Cup Finals, winning four. Both players play a premium position and each player improves the skills of their teammates just by playing with them. Both Ben and Sid will more than likely finish their careers in Pittsburgh, cementing them as this generation's Bradshaw and Lemieux. You don't see many players sticking with one team for their whole career anymore.

Between the two, they have given fans six Championships. Both will likely go down as two of the best to do it in their respective sport. A lot of questions still remain unanswered. Will either player get to lift up another championship trophy? Who will play longer? Which team will suffer more when they leave? Which player will have his statue erected outside of their building first? It's hard to imagine a day without these two leaders. For now, enjoy greatness while we can. By: Dan Hammond

Fight Contempt, Fury With Authentic Kindness

Q: I WORK WITH a male co-worker who always starts a fight. He is contemptuous and insulting to pretty much everyone. I have tried to reason with him but he just keeps escalating. Is there any interpersonal tool you can use with a co-worker that is constantly spoiling for a fight? A: People who are chronic rage balls don’t expect and can’t respond to authentic kindness. I don’t mean pity, sympathy or those snarky responses that area disguised as kindness. I mean genuine empathy. Let’s say your co-worker has a project that is overwhelmingly difficult and he is yelling at everyone. A truly magical ability is to imagine how you might feel in his shoes. You might indeed feel anxious. If he barks at you and you look calmly and say, “I can see you have a lot on your plate.” He will have no idea how to respond.

People who are constantly annoying everyone just don’t know what to do if you do not return fire. They are perfectly comfortable with people who fight back but freeze in the face of soft answers. One of the very entertaining things about having interpersonal skills is you can really impress your friends and confuse the heck out of your adversaries. People who are combative have no response for people who refuse to throw punches back. Imagine your co-worker is skilled at playing football and when he throws the ball, you invite him to a cozy game of chess. You can see how confused he would be. You can also see that anything that keeps you out of his hostile game is good for you. People who exude hostility everywhere they go get a lot ofattention from the people they upset. There is a reward in having the power everywhere you go to make people crazy.

VARIOUS DISORDERS can disrupt daily lifewhile adversely affecting their happiness. Panic disorder is one such condition and can be especially problematic because of the spontaneity of panic attacks. Roughly 3 percent of Americans experience panic disorder, or PD.

What is PD? Panic disorder is diagnosed in people who experience spontaneous panic attacks. These people are preoccupied with the fear of a recurring attack. What is a panic attack? A panic attack is the abrupt onset of intense fear or discomfort. Panic attacks peak

The media make us believe there's a predator behind every pine tree. So we keep our kids closer than ever, meaning they rarely have the kind of free, unstructured, unsupervised time that serves as a pressure valve. If only we could give kids back a smidgen of that freedom, would they feel less anxious -- happier? Yes. The solution is so simple you're going to laugh, but it's this: Have your kids do one thing on their own that you did at their age that you haven't allowed them to do till now. Maybe let them ride their bikes to a friend's house or play outside in the neighborhood or get themselves to school. Our own survey of kids in kindergarten through sixth grade who did a Let Grow activity such as those -- something on their own, at last -- found that more than 50 percent felt happier afterward. What's more, the parents experienced their own drop in anxiety. Why? Because when fear meets reality, reality wins. All the worries swirling around in our heads get shoved aside by pride and joy when our blossoming children burst through the door, excited and elated. It feels great to be the wind beneath their wings instead of the one weighing them down. That weight is anxiety. So how can you get started? Easy: 1) Find a friend who is willing to do this seemingly radical, actually totally developmentally normal and healthy activity with you. If they don't have an idea, here are a few: Climb a tree; run an errand; build something out of junk; go to the library; ride a local bus; visit a relative. Be a Safe Driver and Stop the Aging Process

HE DOCUMENT ARRIVED ON fancy Illinois state letterhead, opening with a word I'd never heard a government official utter to me personally: "Congratulations!" Had I won the lottery? I always thought it was me who had to notify the state of any newfound riches, as opposed to the other way around. That's how

it works when I walk into the convenience store waving a winning two dollar scratch off ticket. Or filing my taxes. Still, my heart rate quickened as I read on. "As a safe driver, you are currently eligible to renew your driver's license via internet, phone or mail, and receive your new driver's license in the mail." The last eight words of that sentence were underlined, as if the Illinois secretary of state thought it would be a major source of excitement for me to sit on my driveway and breathlessly await the postal carrier's arrival, like a 10-year-old boy waiting for a new baseball glove from Amazon. Until now, obtaining a new license always meant a trip to the chaos-ridden Department of Motor Vehicles where, invariably, I get in the wrong line and must start over. Renewing online seemed as easy as, well, renewing online. I looked at my current license, issued in September 2014. My hair was darker and bushier, my face slightly thinner. I'm five pounds heavier than the listed weight but, thankfully, haven't shrunk. Still 6 feet even. In the past four years, the photo has been scrutinized by countless airport security officials, a few bartenders I showered with large tips for questioning whether I was indeed 21,

Stepfather Prevents Mother-Daughter Communication By Amy Dickinson

DEAR AMY: My mom and stepdad recently invited themselves to visit my husband and me. Since they live several states away, most of our communication is done by email or talking on the phone. Each call is answered by Mom, who immediately puts the phone on speaker, so he can listen in. They share a cellphone and email account. He often deletes or responds to my emails addressed to mom with a generic response; often my mother has no knowledge of it. Their recent visit lasted for nine days. I had high hopes for spending even an hour alone with mom. Each time my patient husband tried to suggest activities for the guys to do together, my stepdad quickly jumped on board with what we ladies were doing. He wouldn't leave our sides. They have been together for over 20 years, and his cling-on tendencies and eavesdropping are increasing. I do not recall having any one-on-one time with mom in over a decade. I get a lump in my throat realizing that I may never again have time alone with my mother. Please help me to understand what could be causing his insecure behavior, and how to address it. -- R DEAR R: Your stepfather sounds very controlling, and his behavior is interfering with your relationship with your mother -- and isolating her from you (and likely, everyone else). Dementia might be influencing his behavior, but maybe not. You may have to be much more proactive, and insistent. The next time your mother answers the phone, tell her, "Please, take me off of speaker, Mom. I want to have a private conversation with you about some things going on in my life." Your stepfather's interference with email communication addressed to your mother is alarming. You should try to discern if she is overwhelmed by this constant surveillance, interference and isolation. Does she have friends outside of her marriage? How is her health (and his)? Convey to both of them what you want -- the ability to have occasional private talks with your mother, and to have emails addressed to her actually shared with her. If your mother is caught in this system, it could be very challenging for you to influence her. The most important thing is for you to keep communicating. You should also try to schedule a visit to see her on her home turf. DEAR AMY: I have a friend who has struggled with mental problems as a result of growing up with an abusive mother. My friend is 57 years old and now cares for her mother. She works and has been sober for 30 years. Last year she confided in me that she had not bathed or showered in many months. I have noticed her body odor. She is working with a therapist to get through this issue. My problem is that she visits with me for a long weekend, and I have a small apartment and so the odor becomes obvious. I'm not comfortable saying anything to her. Any advice? -- Holding My Nose DEAR HOLDING MY NOSE: Your friend has already been honest with you about her hygiene issue. This is a fairly common symptom of depression, and falls under the very important category of "selfcare." I give you a lot of credit for maintaining this friendship in such a supportive and compassionate way. One suggestion is that you set up your own bathroom for a "spa" experience for her. Provide fluffy towels, scented bath soaps, candles, soft music, etc. Tell her that if she would like to enjoy this luxury, you will give her plenty of privacy to do so. Tell her you hope she will accept this gift and take good and gentle care of herself, but don't pressure her. Make your washer and dryer available for her to wash her clothing. Cook good and healthy meals together. Talk, share and listen. Your friend is seeking professional help to try to develop strategies to cope with her illness. Your friendship could be an important lifeline for her.

I’VE HAD SOME paranormal experiences throughout my life, but working at a haunted business back in 2003 made me a true believer in the supernatural. My first ghostly experience happened on my third day of employment in Santa Ana, CA. I was in the back stockroom looking for my timecard to swipe and heard three boot-like steps walk up behind me. I felt a male presence peering over my shoulder as if he wanted to see what my name was on my timecard. I swiped my card in such a way that he could see it and went to turn around to introduce myself, but no one was there. It wasn’t until a week later after another new employee had had their first experience that I learned the place was haunted by a ghost that past workers had named “Bob”. Bob loved to stay in the men’s restroom. He would constantly turn the faucet on full blast. One time I heard it on, so I went to go turn it off. I opened the door and went to turn on the light, but I heard him murmuring in there. So with my foot keeping the door pried open, I jokingly said, “Bob, you know you’re supposed to conserve water. Please turn it off.” Well, he actually did! Needless to say, I nervously thanked him and took off! He also loved to open and close the restroom doors. When I worked back in the cash office I would always hear them opening and closing, but no one would ever come out. The door handle to my office would shake as well, but when I’d go to look at the security camera monitors to see if someone wanted something, no one was there. It wasn’t until about six months later that I actually saw him one night while the store was closed. I was straightening up an end-cap and felt someone staring at me. I looked to my left down the aisle towards the wine section and there he was staring right back at me! At first I thought it was a customer who didn’t get out of the store before we locked the doors, but then I realized that I could see the wine racks through him! He was an older balding man and was wearing blue jean overalls and what looked like a long-sleeve flannel shirt. We just stared at each other for about a minute and then he vanished. I told another co-worker that I had seen him and our descriptions of him matched perfectly! I felt him around me numerous times, but he never seemed mean. I always felt that he just wanted to see what I was doing or wanted to let someone know that he was there. I noticed that the more we talked about him, the more things he would do to get our attention. At one point I was sweeping a back breakroom floor and he started to swing one of the clipboards on the wall to get my attention (he did this to another girl a week prior and she quit) and I angrily told him to stop, reminded him that he was dead, didn’t belong there, and that he really needed to go towards the light. Anyway, the clipboard stopped swaying and he left, but he didn’t leave permanently. He just stayed a little further away from me after that. I wonder if the current employees are still having issues with him? If so, I wonder why he’s stuck there and won’t leave? ©theshadowlands.net
