OR ANYONE WHOSE KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY extends beyond the current season of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" or the latest instant replay of an NFL game, the four days of meetings involving Iran's president Hassan Rouhani, European leaders and businesses should remind people we have seen this show before. Rouhani's state visit, the first by an Iranian president in nearly 20 years, follows the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran, the world's leading supporter of terrorism. Corporate giants and politicians are salivating at the prospect of doing business with a regime led by a man who has referred to Israel as "an old wound" that "should be removed." There is plenty of money to be made in deals with the devil, but at what cost? In the 1930s when European and American businesses traded with the Nazis, the rationale seemed to be, "If we don't sell to them, someone else will." That amoral view, no doubt, contributed to the slaughter of an estimated 11 million people. Six million of these were Jews. Re-visiting this hall of shame ought to at least give corporate and political bodies pause when dealing with a regime that seems perfectly willing to finish the job Hitler and his brownshirts started. Have they learned so little from history that they are willing to repeat it? Writing on Investopedia.com, Greg McFarlane offers a caveat to some of the businesses that purposely, or unknowingly, supported the Nazis: "By virtue of Hitler taking complete control of the most powerful country on the European continent, practically every existing business entity in Germany meant supporting Hitler, so it's not fair to frame all these businesses as enthusiastic Nazi collaborators." Perhaps not, but like the majority of the German people, it is safe to say that quite a number of corporations ignored what the Nazis were doing so long as they could continue to do business and make a profit. One of those companies was Siemens, the largest engineering company in Europe. About Siemens McFarlane writes: "The company forced slaves to manufacture components for the rockets that ended up raining down on London and Antwerp, Belgium, in short order. In the early 21st century, Siemens began to pay reparations to the workers it had paid nary a pfennig to 55 years earlier." Will companies signing up to do business with Iran be shamed and perhaps forced by law at a future date to pay reparations to the families of those killed by Islamic terrorists funded by the Iranian regime? IG Farben was another company that dealt with Nazi Germany. The company licensed to various companies the pesticide Zyklon B, which was used to suffocate millions in the death camps. "In 1951," notes McFarlane, "when the victors partitioned Germany, the Western Allies restored IG Farben into its original components," which included BASF, maker of cassette tapes. "Today, BASF continues to trade as one of the featured securities on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, with a market capitalization of $60 billion." A line from "The Godfather" seems an appropriate analogy. Just before someone is assassinated he is told, "Nothing personal, it's strictly business." In a twist on this theme, Deutsche Bank in 1998 accepted "moral responsibility" for its dealings with the Nazis. These dealings included knowingly buying gold taken from people murdered in the camps. What would be the morally responsible approach to Iran? Because the regime is complicit in the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), which have led to the deaths of American servicemen and women, the morally responsible thing to do is not to conduct business with Iran. Given the depths to which human nature appears to have sunk, however, that is unlikely to happen. What Is Workplace Enlightenment?

Q. I’M INTERESTED IN emotional maturity, personal growth and also enlightenment, but every day I just want to bite people at work. Isn’t enlightenment some state you achieve where you sit around in nirvana all day? Am I hopeless because, since starting this, I mostly see how angry I feel at people? You often cover topics that border on the spiritual. I would be interested in your opinion about what the heck enlightenment for ordinary people is anyway? A. I don’t believe enlightenment is achieving some state of permanent, undisturbed bliss. If the goal of all creation is to send us to earth just to achieve a state where we stop learning and growing, or go into a stagnant perfection ... what is the point? Enlightenment makes more sense if you think of it as an effort to live your work life and personal life from the eye of the hurricane. Storms rage around you, and you know that some storms will pull you away from the eye. If you can get up every day and make progress on dropping into the storm less frequently, and returning to the eye more easily, you’re doing a stellar job! I find it ironic that a concept that represents human freedom - enlightenment - has now come to represent a real human imprisonment of perfection. What if we lowered the bar on the lofty ideal of enlightenment? What if the path is as

We joke about Monday mornings being the worst time of the week and Friday being the best. Indeed, more heart attacks happen on Monday mornings than any other time of the week. If we show up at work and all we expect is suffering, boredom and battles, then no wonder our hearts give out. If enlightenment is about finding a permanent home within ourselves where we are loved, safe and supported, no matter how bad our circumstances, that seems like an excellent idea! The translation of the American Bible promises, “Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.” If the idea of God upsets you, then substitute some other thing that might care for you. Perhaps the peace that understands anything that we can understand is about spending more time in the eye of the hurricane. Imagine that you have the ability to be calm when you get fired, when a customer yells at you and when you’re having your annual review. If we can stop getting so huffy about our own opinions about freedom, perhaps we

Addicted Stepdaughter Absconds With Wedding Funds By Amy Dickinson

DEAR AMY: I have recently divorced from my husband of 20 years. When we got married, I was truly blessed with a wonderful stepson and stepdaughter. Their father -- my husband -- was an addict and in recovery for many years (so he says). Our marriage ended because of his dishonesty about drug usage, eventually leading to a DWI when he ran someone off the road and rear-ended another vehicle. This was after countless lost nights of sleep; harm to our home; emotional, verbal and physical abuse -- which he never owned up to (or should I say, remembered). Needless to say, the accident was the end of our marriage. I still have an unresolved issue with my stepdaughter. I gave her $10,000 of my own personal money for her wedding. The wedding was canceled the day before it was due to take place because she and her fiance are addicts, and when the money was gone, he left. She is well-supported and can return the money and other gifts (which she has not done). Any advice for me? -- Strapped Stepmother DEAR STRAPPED: Your stepdaughter should reimburse you for the money you gave to her to fund her wedding, and she should return any wedding gifts she received. However, I think it's pretty obvious that she will not follow through. She's an addict. She is the daughter of an addict. I'm afraid you know all too well how unreliable people in the throes of addiction are. If she has access to funds to repay you, you might consider taking her to court to try to recover at least some of this money. I hope you can move on and find peace. DEAR AMY: My wife and I are in our early 50s and have several children. My sister is also in her 50s, has never married and lives with my mother. We always invite my sister to family events -- weddings, the kids' birthdays, graduations, etc. Nearly always she responds by short email that she will not attend. She offers no excuse and only says, "I will not be there." Recently, I got her on the phone and asked why she was not joining our youngest son's birthday dinner. She said she was not "comfortable" around some of the other family members we had invited. I emailed her afterward to let her know it hurt us that she was not respecting these family events by attending. She responded, "My attendance or lack of it is not about respect -- I have my own life and my own issues. If I decline, I don't like being quizzed about why I am not coming." Am I out of line in viewing this as a respect issue and expressing our hurt feelings? I suspect she will now get my mother involved. -- Disappointed Brother DEAR DISAPPOINTED: You are not out of line -- nor is your sister. You expressed yourself honestly, and she replied in kind. It is almost refreshing that she is not attempting to lay down conditions or dictate your guest list, or make any demands at all. Furthermore, your expectation that she should supply a reason or excuse for not attending an event isn't polite. Don't you think it's possible that your sister, whose life is so very different from yours, might have challenges you don't comprehend -- or aren't aware of? You are kind to continue to invite her to things, even though her pattern indicates that she will decline. I hope you and your family are able to not take this personally and to rise above your own feelings to give your sister opportunities to spend time with you in your home.

Universal and variable universal life holders invest by using sub-accounts, which are akin to mutual funds, inside the policy. Permanent life insurance earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis, but you don’t have to die to get your money - these policies allow you to borrow against your cash value. The downside is the hefty price tag. High fees and commissions can lop off as much as three percentage points from the annual return and up-front commissions are typically 100 percent of the first year’s premium. THIS HAPPENED IN Portage La Praire, Manitoba, about 7 years ago: My sister had moved to an apartment, and had asked me to spend the night after she had moved in and settled. Which I did because we are quite close, and I enjoyed being able to talk to her, and visit my niece. On this particular day, I felt weird in her house. It is hard to explain, it was like I was being watched, and not wanted there. As the day progressed I kept catching glances of movement from the corner of my eye. It stared off as just small "shadows" but that soon changed as the day progressed. As night came I began to see more and more movement, and shadows. They were getting bigger too, almost more bold. I was seeing them more and more. At first I tried so hard to ignore them, I wanted to dismiss them as nothing, but after a while I couldn't. I finally told my sister that I was going to have a bath, and then get ready for bed. She told me that she would put my niece to bed while I was bathing. I guess I thought that if I got out of the living room, maybe it would get better. There were no corners to peek around, or shelves to hide behind in the bathroom. After my bath I came in to the kitchen, and something felt so wrong. I noticed that my sister was not out of her bedroom and I felt worried. I opened the door to her room, and all of a sudden I heard my sister, she was in trouble. I could tell she was trying to talk, but couldn't, then she was up. She rushed out of the room, she was crying. I went in and grabbed my niece. After a few minutes, she calmed down and told me what happened. She said that she couldn't move and her legs were elevated in the air, and that there was a huge eye, looking at her from above. She then said that when I entered the room, there was a very bright light surrounding me, and it all came to an end as I entered. My sister told me to call my Mom and our Aunty, because they are "gifted" people. They immediately got a Medicine man to come to the house, and he told my sister that she could not stay in the house, for there were many angry spirits, in the house. We moved her out that night. I asked the medicine man, if there was many different sized ones, and he said yes, and then I told him that I had "seen" them all night, but they stayed hidden from me, just watching me. I cannot explain why they stayed away from me, or why I was surrounded by a bright light, I was just very happy that nothing happened to my sister or my niece. After she moved out of that apartment, we drove by it a few times, and it was odd, because it felt so threatening to us.

THE OSCARS - TO BOYCOTT OR NOT TO BOYCOTT: I’m not going to wade deeply into the Oscar diversity controversy other than to say that the statistics on African American vs. white award winners is disturbing, and Academy voters need to get with the program. Television certainly has. But a boycott of the Oscars is not effective. Look, Chris Rock is the host, and he is bound to make a lot of people squirm with his pointed observations. I think African-American actors should come out in force that night, to support him and to support and promote the cause. And it’s not just diversity in the terms of how many black stars are really working, or how many are big stars, or nominated, but diversity in the roles they are offered. I was one of the few who heartily disliked the movie

I have been thrilled by Miss Davis’ Emmy-winning ascension on the series “How to Get Away with Murder.” And no, I really don’t think actors should turn down roles that attract them or have potential.
