The other resort casino at Nemacolin has only been open for one complete year, so a true comparison cannot yet be made. The other ten casinos all reported drops to their gross slots revenues. The range went from nine percent (Presque Isle) to just over one percent (Mohegan Sun). Only the Rivers in Pittsburgh did not record two consecutive years with a decline. In fact the Rivers has been perhaps the best performer as 2014 represented the only year it had a decline (2.5 percent) in gross slot revenues. Harrah's in Philadelphia has had decreases to their revenues for all five years while Penn National, Presque Isle, and the Meadows have had declines for four of the last five years.

Possible explanations for the decline in gross slots revenue could be the increased competition from neighboring states Maryland and Ohio, with the latter taking a heavy toll on Presque Isle in Erie. Also, Pennsylvanians were subject to a slowdown in state growth in 2012 through 2014 that might have held down discretionary income growth. And perhaps there was a shift from slot machines to table games at casinos when they appeared in mid2010.

While the number of slot machines statewide did not vary significantly over the last five years, peaking at just over 318,500 in 2012 before settling in at 317,700 in 2014, they did pro-

vide gamblers with another option. But did table games provide the needed boost for casinos?

In their first full year, 2011, table games at Pennsylvania's casinos brought in nearly $620 million statewide. That amount grew by nearly 11 percent in 2012 ($687 million). However, that growth slowed a bit in 2013 to just over six percent and for 2014 the rate of growth fell even further to 2.7 percent. In 2014 the gross revenue from table games came in at $749.5 million. The positive from this, from the casino and state perspective, is that there has been growth to table games revenue, albeit at a decreasing rate since they debuted. Perhaps this

Interestingly enough the number of table games being offered (banking, non-banking, and electronic) has been expanding at about the same rate as revenues. In the first full year

IT’S ALL ‘CAKE’ -IF NOT THE OSCAR FROSTING FOR JENNIFER ANISTON: “Most of our assumptions have outlived their uselessness,” said the philosopher Marshall McLuhan.

Now we are reaching a saturation point in stories about Jennifer Aniston and how she failed to get a nomination for her movie “Cake,” and that there’s no justice in show biz.

These articles emphasize that she’s lovely, not unhappy, not at all miserable and not mourning Brad Pitt - which we have kept saying over and over, in column after column,

but nobody pays us any attention. Her serious movie “Cake” wasn’t released wide until last weekend. It had a “qualifying” run in December, to make it eligible for the Oscar nod it didn’t get. Never mind the competition this year was fierce.

Hollywood thought “Cake” was too “stunty” - with Jen a bit overweight, scarred, no makeup. Not that those gimmicks have stopped other stars from winning awards Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman - remember the nose!

THE GREEN SHEET sudden. Aniston - looking ravishingly attractive on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter - will likely achieve respect in a more normal dramatic way. She’s got the chops, but is very much defined by her rom-com image, and by assumptions.

“I AM HARDLY the first person to comment that Judy Garland’s voice was unique. I have heard a great many singing voices of all kinds over the years but I have never heard another remotely like it - none of her recordings could possibly be by anyone else.”

That is John H. Haley, giving an interview to “The Judy Garland Discography.” Haley, is an expert in audio restoration. The task of restoring dozens of Judy Garland’s earliest and last performances, for the coming threedisc CD “Judy Garland: Swan Songs, First Flights” fell to him.

The result of this years-long meticulous endeavor is the realization that Garland’s latter-day voice, though considerably changed by time and trouble, had retained much more of its quality and control than legend has it.

Garland fans will appreciate the technically adjusted updates on Judy’s 1968 shows from Philadelphia, her last concerts in Copenhagen and her final cabaret stint at London’s Talk of the Town in 1969. Rex Reed’s liner notes for the vinyl version of Garland’s Talk of the Town gig earned him a Grammy nomination.

Mr. Haley’s entire interview, which deals with the particular qualities of Judy’s voice over the decades and the extreme effort that went into restoring badly damaged, badly recorded material is fascinating. A labor of love

It took a long time for Judy’s reputation to recover from the final, fraught era of her life. In ‘69, she was only 47 when she died of an accidental overdose, but she had lived a thousand years in show-biz terms. Money - the lack of it - was the root of her despair in those last years.

She pushed her body and her voice beyond endurance. She literally “sang for her supper.”

Judy was mostly a victim of her own demons and choices - as much as she liked to blame her horrible mother and heartless MGM. But, as June Allyson - often pitted against Garland in studio machinations - once remarked: “When you have that much talent, can you really be expected to live and think normally?”

The real tragedy of Garland’s final years was after Capitol Records dropped her, she could not find a label that - first of all - paid her. Second, that would know what to do with Judy’s altered but still-viable voice, just as Verve and Columbia did for Billie Holiday and Concord Jazz for Rosemary Clooney.

Judy, in a not-unusual throe of self-pity, once said: “If I am a legend, why am I so alone?”

She never really was - certainly the best-intentioned people in her life did not wish to abandon her. Judy preferred to be a victim, rather than ever be seen as an aggressor, or the mistress of her own ship - especially in choppy waters! Still, more than 40 years after her death, Garland is at a peak of renewed recognition and appreciation.

HOW COULD someone lose $20 million in a year? You're about to find out just how easy it is to go from neverhave-to-work-again rich to Ican't-believe-it's-all-gone in less than 12 months.

Let's look at a hypothetical baseball player. He's worked hard to develop his natural athletic abilities, and one day he gets the call. A California team will pay him $20 million for a single year -- this is an amount that would take the average American worker nearly 500 years to earn.

The national media reports all this and the small town where he grew up throws the young man a parade to celebrate his good fortune. But before the first piece of confetti falls, our ball-player has already lost over half his money and he probably doesn't even know it.

After $10.9 million of taxes and commission, this leaves our athlete with $9.1 million - a 55 percent drop in money

from the headlines everyone read just a day earlier and before he even puts on his baseball mitt.

Now let's assume our player gets a divorce from his sweetheart whom he's been married to for a couple of years.

California is a community property state, which means any salary earned is deemed marital property and is subject to a 50 percent split in a divorce.

Our player is a public figure and is a target for a lawsuit.

He surely was not in the wrong, but he was advised to settle out of court.

Real estate never goes down? His financial advisor pitched him on a development project that ran out of money and went bankrupt, taking our athlete's money with it.

When everyone thinks he's worth $20 million, surely he can afford to give a small loan among family, right? They supported him through the

highs and the lows. His goal has always been to repay them.

He can't let his mom continue to drive her 15 year-old clunker, so he helps her pick out a nice new Lexus.

He needs to drive to practice, so he leases a car for himself and one for his wife.

He knows some people who make $100,000 a year and splurge on a $25,000 vacation, so this trip doesn't seem out of his budget.

After getting burned in the real estate deal, he thinks it is prudent to lease a house instead of buying.

He's proud of himself for cutting this expense from $500,000 down to something more reasonable.

Stuff adds up, and he finds himself spending $500,000 on living expenses to live a fairly normal life.

If you add up these expenses, the total comes to you guessed it $4,550,000.

And just like, that our guy is broke. His only assets are some used home furnishings and a worthless loan to a family member.

Take a close look at how he "lost" his $20 million. Many of the items that destroyed his wealth he had very little if any

IN THE SUMMER OF 1996, I bought a large home in a nice, older neighborhood. My fiancé and I were really looking forward to getting married and having our own, private place.

The first night in the house felt very strange to me, but I chalked it up to being a newlywed in a new home. As time went by, the strange feelings did not abate. I felt more and more apprehensive, especially when I was in the house alone. The house made many strange noises when I was there by myself that it did not make while Sandy was home with me. I asked Sandy if she heard any strange noises when she was there alone and she said she did not.

After being in the house 6 months or so, I began to hear footsteps at night coming from the upstairs. Sandy claimed she never heard any of the sounds and was calling me paranoid and crazy. At first, the footsteps were confined to the upstairs, but eventually they came downstairs and into our bedroom. Whatever was making the footstep noise would come up to my side of our bed and stand there for several minutes before exiting our room.

I heard other strange noises in the house like the sound of an animal growling and scratching noises in the walls. Someone (or something) knocked on our front door one morning at 3 am so loud that I thought the door was going to come off the hinges.

Of course, Sandy never heard anything and accused me of trying to scare her. I began to see small, black humanoid figures darting in and out of the corner of my vision. They would shoot behind furniture or duck into rooms when I try to lay my eyes directly on them. I saw them during the day and night, and began to see them more and more often.

One day when I turned around to try and see the little black things, I saw a large, black thing at the other end of the hallway.

It was about 6 feet tall and though I could not make out any features, I could tell that it was a human shape under a cloak, and it did not run away. It just stood there for several seconds to let me get a good look at it and then it slowly disappeared. I saw that apparition several more times over the next few months. I was really getting scared and it came to the point that I did not want to go home at night.

The experiences were taking a huge toll on our marriage.

Sandy would blame me for scaring her with reports of things that were not happening (in her mind) just to cause trouble in our marriage. She could not begin to conceive that I was truly scared and that something was really happening, even if she did not experience it. We stayed married for a total of 30 months before she moved out of the house and filed for divorce.

But here is where the story gets even stranger. The day she moved out of the house, the frequency and intensity of the experiences began to diminish. Four months after she was gone, all the activity ceased.

I have since remarried and we live in the same house with our children.
