URING THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN, Sen. Barack Obama said: "... if somebody wants to build a coal power plant, they can. It's just that it will bankrupt them ..." He added that under his now defeated Cap and Trade bill, "elec-

tricity rates would necessarily skyrocket."

In 2010, Cap and Trade died in the Senate, but the president's goal of bankrupting the coal industry never waned. Last Monday he announced that the Environmental Protection Agency will impose new regulations throughout the country limiting carbon emissions from power plants powered by fossil fuels. Several states are challenging the EPA rules "that aim to cut carbon emissions in the power sector by 32 percent." EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, testifying before Congress, was asked about claims that the new EPA plan would only impact global warming by a measly .01 degrees Celsius, to which she replied, "... I'm not disagreeing that this action in and of itself will not make all the difference we need to address climate action, but if we don't take action domestically, we will never get started ..."

The Washington Post, which believes the Earth is warming and humans are responsible, acknowledged the regulations have "shortcomings," but endorsed them because they set a good example for the rest of the world.

So, these regulations are likely to cost jobs, raise electricity prices and have a minimal effect on global temperatures, but will they set a good example? Is that the new policy standard?

Among many reasons Americans should be suspicious of this "climate change putsch," as a Wall Street Journal editorial labeled it, is that Administrator McCarthy has refused to release the "secret science" her agency used when drafting the new regulations. This "most transparent administration in U.S. history" has now added to the secret side deals with Iran, secret scientific "evidence," which may not be evidence at all. Cults do that by suppressing any information and facts contrary to the imposed orthodoxy.

After the initial fusillade from critics, the president fired back, arguing that addressing "climate change" is a moral obligation and a matter of national security. It would be helpful to know the president's standard for determining what is moral and what is immoral, especially since he has said nothing about those Planned Parenthood videos in which high-level employees are shown explaining how the organization can abort babies in ways that preserve body parts. And there is ISIS, which continues to operate and appears not to have been "diminished and degraded," as the president promised it would.

Is ISIS not a bigger national security issue?

The president might have more political success and even attract Republican and conservative support had he framed this in a different way. Instead of attacking coal plants and other users of fossil fuel that have produced electricity and elevated the American lifestyle, he should have launched a campaign to deprive terrorists and Islamic fundamentalists of oil revenue. Instead of picking the controversial "climate change" horse to ride roughshod over Congress and a skeptical public, the president might have embraced an alternative fuel agenda that would have achieved his desired end without the crushing blows that almost certainly will impact states where fossil fuels have provided jobs that probably will evaporate, if not immediately, then eventually.

The EPA regulations are likely to reach the Supreme Court. In 2007, while the Court did grant authority to the EPA to regulate carbon emissions (Mass. v. EPA), it said it was not giving the agency an unrestricted license to do what it wants. It ruled that costs and outcomes must be taken into consideration as part of its regulatory mandates. The Court decision was one of two rebukes it has delivered to the EPA in the last two years for exceeding its statutory powers.

As the Court noted, "When an agency claims to discover in a long-extant statute an unheralded power to regulate a significant portion of the American economy, we typically greet its announcement with a measure of skepticism. We expect Congress to speak clearly if it wishes to assign to an agency decisions of vast economic and political significance."

These are bound to be the issues should the EPA regulations again reach the Court, as they should.

SO WE’RE PRETTY SURE IT WASN’T HIM … After a safety camera filmed a man’s car speeding in Plymouth, England, he went to court to claim that someone else had been driving his car. A police investigation revealed that the man he named was dead.

JUST A COINCIDENCE, OFFICER … A man, who staged a home invasion in Chattanooga, was confronted by an angry homeowner who bit off part of his ear. He was arrested by police who noticed that part of his ear was missing.

YOU HEAR SOMETHING? … Two thieves stole an ATM from a business and loaded it into a van. But, when they went over a speed bump the machine fell out and they were left empty-handed.

THE GREEN SHEET LOOK, THE AFFAIR HAS RUN ITS COURSE … A married woman broke up with her also-married lover at her husband’s insistence, but the boyfriend kept sending her graphic texts and emails. So she and her hubby faked her death, sending him pictures of her all splattered with ketchup. Unfortunately, the lover became so concerned for her well-being he called the police. They found her alive and well.

I SUPPOSE YOU BLAME US FOR THAT ... Two young men got into a confrontation on a trolley car in Manchester, England, which began when one of them made fun of the other guy’s pony tail, saying it made him look like an idiot. They started hurling objects at each other, smashing windows and terrifying other passengers. Then, one of the objects landed on nearby tracks, causing another trolley to derail.

this or eagled that; what clubs they use. One golfer told his friend that he even got his wife in the sport: "Hey, guess what? I got a new set of golf clubs for my wife!"

And the reply was, "Great trade!".... And the game has no age boundaries, either. Four men were out golfing.

"These hills are getting steeper as the years go by," one complained. "The sand traps seem to be bigger than I remember them too," said another of the senior group.

Mom-Shaming Gone Viral

A

VIDEO GOING VIRAL SHOWS a young man named Carl Paz entering a Sprint store in Torrance, California, to confront whoever let a baby wait in the car parked right in front of the store's plate-glass window. When a mom in the store says it's her child, Paz, who is already videotaping the encounter,

tells her, "As a good parent, I would go out and check on my baby."

The mother says that's why she parked her car where she can look on. "There's nothing wrong with my kid being right there."

"In your sense, maybe there's nothing wrong," Paz responds.

You bet, in her sense! She's the mom. She cares far more about the child than Paz does -- but he assumes she doesn't. Because we've all been trained to judge parents mercilessly and assume the worst.

But the mom is right. There is nothing wrong with a child waiting a few minutes in a car.

Yes, I know we have been exhorted to believe every child in every parked car, even 10 feet from a parent, is in immediate danger of heat stroke or kidnapping. But in fact, the most dangerous thing the mom did that day was driving her child at all.

Kids are in more danger in moving cars than parked ones -- traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among children ages 2 to 14 -- and yet we don't make viral videos every time a mom drives her kid to the mall.

We go crazy when we've been told to go crazy, and lately we've been told to go crazy when a kid is waiting in a car, no matter what the circumstances. Paz even parrots the mantra "If you see something, say something" -- a phrase that implies we are in such constant danger, we must be on the lookout at all times.

Q: I’M OFTEN SURPRISED at the self-destructive behavior of co-workers in my workplace. They say and do things that I know end up creating problems. Are people unaware, or unconcerned about the consequences of behavior that actions that alienate others? Is there a way I can work with these people without lecturing them about the fact that they’re making bad decisions?

A: I often use a three-fold approach in dealing with those people who appear to be self-destructing at work: 1) validate their emotional reaction, 2) gently ask them what outcome they are seeking, 3) if they’re truly bent on sinking their boat, stay on the beach.

The truth is, we can’t save people from themselves, but we can save ourselves from being in the wrong place when people make bad decisions. Unfortunately, in the heat of the moment, some people do prefer to burn down their futures rather than feel intense discomfort.

In the aftermath, you may hear even brilliant, educated, accomplished people explain away their poor decisions by the upsetting behavior of others. The fact that the individual then reacted in a way that permanently destroyed goals he or she cared about is not acknowledged.

As for the odds of this child being in true danger, here's the math: If there are 40 million children under age 10 in America (and there are), and if they take an average of, let's say, 10 car rides a week, we are talking about 20.8 billion kid car rides a year. And 1 in every 2,080,000,000 of those trips could possibly prove fatal because a parent left a child in the car during an errand. Should we really be regulating parental choice based on 1-in-2-billion odds?

No. And by the way: more kids die in parking lots than in parked cars.

What I appreciate about Paz is that he did NOT call the cops, because he knew that this could easily bring on a Child Protective Services investigation, and the family could be traumatized.

On the other hand, he posted the video on Facebook, including a close-up of the license plate, and now the police are apparently looking into the matter. In the meantime, on his page, strangers are calling the mom a "bitch" and "crackhead" -which would make most of our own moms bitches and crackheads, because most of us waited out some errands in the car.

term well-being. Sure, it feels good in a fit of anger or frustration to say the first thing that pops into your head. Realistically, though, the first thing that pops into your head may harm you and do nothing to “reform” the other person.

If there’s one skill I work to impart to clients, it’s the art of behaving well when they feel badly. Behaving well when you’re having a great day is easy. Keeping your eye on long-term goals when you want to scream takes discipline.

Keep in mind that staying in control doesn’t mean our internal emotional fires don’t burn hot. When we can stand the heat, however, we don’t end up burning ourselves by acting impulsively. Venting our emotions can be quite self-destructive.

Some new clients argue with me that the only honest reaction to a co-worker’s bad behavior is to make it clear that they’re furious with the person. I point out that honesty is never the best policy when you’re only going to succeed in making an enemy, not a point!

I add that if emotional venting actually fixed problems, we’d have world peace, eh?

If despite your best efforts a co-worker continues to sail into a self-destructive storm, just stay away. People who go down in the workplace create a wake that can pull others with them. If you can’t contribute to a solution, then don’t participate in the problem.

T'S HIGH TIME WE RETURNED to a more primitive, cheaper and safer method of swapping sensitive information: the Post-it Note. Originally, I thought of reverting to the "double swear" method as in, "Double swear that you'll never tell anyone I wanted the footballs underinflated" or "Double swear that you won't reveal our cell phone eavesdropping meth-

ods to foreign heads of state," but I quickly reneged. Haven't we all been burned by a supposed "friend" who violated the double swear oath? My fourth grade math partner, if you're reading this, rest assured I have not forgotten how you threw me under the bus. I trusted you, man.

Instead we continue believing, erroneously, that our extramarital affairs via websites like Ashley Madison are immune from hackers. The website says its members are anonymous, after all. We naively think pressing the "delete" key on our electronic devices will do just that - send all those incriminating texts, home videos, naked selfies and classified emails into a bottomless pit of nothingness where they will remain ignored until the end of time. Sort of like Adam Sandler's last three movies.

We never bother to Google "Can you really delete a text message forever?" If we did, we'd discover a treasure trove of procedures for retrieving stuff we wish could vanish forever; some of

STARTING THIS WEEK: HOT PURSUIT: In the style of so many “buddy” movies that rely heavily on the differences between two stars, this comedy draws upon the differences between Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara for the bulk of its humor. She sends them a Skype message, and what she knows about each of their private lives indicates less of a prank and more of a very real, potentially lethal threat.

Overwhelmed Single Mom Does Not Need to Grow Up

DEAR AMY: I am a semi-young (35-year-old) single mother of four who is working and going to school full time. I have lately become very negative and very down. I feel very alone and unappreciated by my children. I ask them to clean up behind themselves and they half do it. I ask them to keep an eye on their younger sibling and no one wants to help. Their grades are not the best (just barely passing) and there is hardly any communication between us. All of our communication consists of yelling and arguing.

I feel helpless and as though my back is up against a wall. I am now fully aware that I am not happy and have lost control of my life.

How can I get back on the right path? I have no friends -- only my mother -- and I don't want to be the kind of mother she was, but now I'm turning into that. I know it may be a little late to want to grow up, but I want to grow up so badly.

Do you have any advice on a first step in the right direction?

-- Aware DEAR AWARE: Your question breaks my heart and makes me (once again) feel so grateful to my own mother, who raised four children on her own. You are trying to do a job that is more stressful than most of us can imagine. Mothering without a net is physically, mentally and emotionally depleting.

My main advice is not for you to grow up more, but to try to reconnect with your youthful exuberance, energy and joy. If you could shed even one of your stressors, you will feel lighter. You need more energy to cope with your everyday challenges. Can you stretch out your schooling and take fewer classes so you could perhaps become more involved at your kids' school? If you spend time at their school you will meet other parents with the potential of friendships between adults and your kids. You will also be more actively locked in to their academic challenges.

You also should find an activity outside of your home that you and your children do together that is not about work, homework or housework -- but about fun, play and feeling connected. You might find this through a faith practice or at your local YMCA. Family life is not a seamless journey, but a series of challenges.

You need to feel (basically) good about your own life in order to show your children how to live well. I'm rooting for you.

DEAR AMY: You asked for feedback (so to speak) on the issue pose by "Hungry for Leftovers," about the hostess of a potluck keeping leftovers after the meal.

As a serial potlucker, both as a host and as a guest, I can say that generally your host will expect to keep the leftovers at the end of the evening. The idea is that since your host/hostess provided the space, he/she will also spend the next day or two cleaning up after company and won't have to cook during that time.

Often certain guests request to take their leftovers home, for many reasons -- dietary, monetary, promised their spouse they'd bring any leftovers home -- and as a hostess I always accommodate someone who asks.

More often, we split the leftovers -- everyone takes home some of everything. Again, as a hostess, I usually announce how I plan to handle this in the invitations to the dinner.

Years earlier she had said, “I don’t care if they come to see whether I’m fat or thin just so long as they give up their money!”

In the final years of her life, Elizabeth worried that with all the new treatments, which were extending and improving the lives of so many afflicted with HIV/AIDS, that people were forgetting the early, terrible years. She was correct. There are twenty and thirtysomething’s today who know nothing of the grim beginnings, the thousands of deaths. AIDS is “that thing old people used to get.” And anyway, all these new drugs can keep you going forever, right?

Well, maybe. But if it happened once, it could happen again. Disease, like death, never takes a holiday.

MY NAME IS MICHAEL. In 2001, I attended basic training in Fort Sill, OK, and I had never seen a ghost or a spirit before this time.

About three weeks into training a fellow soldier and I were pulling the final fire guard of the night. When you do this, two soldiers are always awake keeping count of the number of soldiers sleeping in bunk and those who might be up at the bathroom at the time or doing anything else out of the ordinary. This is to give an accurate head count to the drill sergeant if he asks.

During the last fire guard shift before you wake up, it's your responsibility to have the bathroom clean and ready for inspection. During these last two hours mother nature better be calling like never before if you use the bathroom.

The area where we would sleep is huge. There were over 60 of us, and the bunks were laid out in four rows with two walk-

The other soldier and I were walking on opposite sides of the bay (sleeping/living area) counting the number of soldiers in their bunks sleeping. We came to the end and walked into the bathroom from opposite ends. The bathroom doors are every bit of 50 feet apart so we were not talking together or anything except making sure everyone was accounted for. We entered the bathroom at the same time and when we did we both saw a soldier in shorts and shirt, which is the proper sleeping attire, go into a toilet stall. Simultaneously we called out wanting to know why he was going in there. I think we had half hour till inspection and surely he could wait since we had just finished cleaning. When we approached the stall there wasn't another living person in that bathroom but us. If I had been alone I probably would have figured I was seeing things but we both saw the same thing at the exact same time. It wasn't scary and I don't remember being cold or anything weird.

Another time after that, I was on guard and when I was doing my head count I swear someone was standing at the end of his bunk at attention as if waiting for bunk inspection. I saw this out of the corner of my eye as I passed and when I looked back there was nobody there. I was alone that time and it might have been that I was just sleepy. I was pulling the middle of the night guard and had just woke up, but I really don't think so. The soldier I saw standing there was dressed the same as the one I had seen in the bathroom.

Those were my only encounters. I'm just curious if anyone have ever heard similar stories, because I know that soldiers have died during training although it's rare and tragic. I also never felt like I had anything to fear from them. If they were ghost or spirits I believe they are just souls that might be stuck having had their lives end before their time. They were my fellow soldiers, still training to protect our country that will never see a graduation ceremony.
