URRICANE JOAQUIN DUMPED large amounts of rain on the East Coast, but another "force of nature" flooded the country with so much rhetoric it was difficult for most people to keep up. Before barely any facts were known, there was President Obama on camera (when isn't he?) making a 12-minute address -- a relatively short time for him -- about the school shootings in Roseburg, Oregon. The president referred to himself 28 times, according to Grabien.com, again proving that whatever happens in this country, or the world, it really is all about him. He talked about the need for "common sense" gun laws, and yet in the case of the Oregon shootings, as in so many other similar tragedies, he never mentions the responsibility and moral guilt of the shooter. Someone intent on killing other human beings will not be deterred by more gun laws. Law-breaking is what criminals do; otherwise they would be law-abiders, a word that applies to responsible gun owners. And those "gun free zones" are just advertisements to potential killers not to expect armed opposition to their shooting spree. One might as well replace a sign warning that your home has an alarm with one that says the door is unlocked, come in and take what you like. Perhaps the president might consider telling us what law, short of gun confiscation, would prevent, or substantially reduce, gun violence. He won't, because as he admitted, he wants to "politicize" the Oregon shooting. And what of the mentally ill? The Oregon shooter's neighbors recognized that something was a little off about him, but no one said anything to authorities. Would more gun laws have broken their silence? Every last gun in the shooter's arsenal, according to reports, was legally acquired. That's with gun laws we have in place already. Would another law or two or three have made a significant difference? Responding to reporters' questions at the White House Friday (with each answer lasting 10 to 12 minutes), the president said he would not sign another continuing resolution to avoid a government "shutdown" now to come just before Christmas. He chastised Congress for its failure to pass a budget, ignoring the real obstructionists, the Democrats, with their filibusters and manipulation of Senate rules. And the president called for an increase in the debt ceiling so we can "pay our bills." But in 2006, when he was a senator from Illinois and George W. Bush was president, Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling. At the time he said, "The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government can't pay its own bills ... I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit." So it was a failure of leadership then, but not a failure of leadership now? And let's not even start on this administration's multiple failures with Russia and in the Middle East. If the president were serious about paying down the debt, he might start with a Government Accountability Office report released recently that reveals improper payments to "deceased individuals or those who use deceased individuals' identities" made by 124 programs across 22 government agencies. The GAO estimates these improper payments, which it says is a pervasive problem across government, totaled $124.7 billion in fiscal year 2014, an increase of nearly $19 billion over fiscal 2013. New job figures came out last week and the president commented on them. He said 142,000 new jobs were added in September. He conveniently ignored these Bureau of Labor Statistics figures: a record 94.6 million Americans not in the labor force (the lowest participation rate since 1977 during the Carter administration). If President Obama were paid according to the number of words he uses, he would be a multi-billionaire. If that pay were reduced by the number of untruths he told -from "climate change," to federal spending and the debt ceiling and budget, to the supposed effectiveness of more gun laws -- he would be broke and in debt, like the nation he so poorly leads. by Cal Thomas (Readers may email Cal Thomas at tcaeditors@tribpub.com.) I’M HERE TO MAKE A DELIVERY … Two weeks after being released from the prison in Franklin County, Ala., a woman was arrested while trying to break back in. She used bolt cutters on a nearby chain link fence in an attempt to smuggle in two large bags of tobacco, some pain medication and a cellphone.

OFFICER, I BELIEVE YOU HAVE SOME OF MY STUFF ... A man burglarized a home in Twin Falls, Idaho, but accidentally left both his car keys and his cellphone behind as he left the premises. He was arrested when he returned to the scene of the crime to retrieve the items while police officers were there conducting their investigation.

I’LL LEAVE; SPLASH! … A man was thrown out of a waterfront bar in Port Salerno, Florida, for fighting with other customers. So he jumped into the river and swam to another bar. He was arrested there for causing a disturbance in a public place.

SEEMS ABOUT RIGHT … Lawmakers got into a major brawl in Japan’s parliament while debating a bill on abandoning the country’s official policy of pacifism.

ABSOLUTELY! WHEN CAN WE MEET? … A man, seeking to sell some cocaine, accidentally texted the captain of the Florida’s Martin County Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit. The captain texted back that he was, indeed, very interested in such a deal.

SO, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR ARM, SIR? … A man was seen on surveillance tape torching his former boss’ van in Whitefield, England, in the dead of night, but he stood too close to the vehicle, and the explosion caught his arm on fire. The cops caught up with him at the local hospital where he had gone for treatment.

THE GREEN SHEET NOTHING IS TOO GOOD FOR MY LITTLE GIRL … A woman robbed three local banks in Bradenton, Florida, within half an hour just to pay for a nice graduation party for her daughter. A teller at the third bank happened to slip a dye pack in with the money which then exploded in her car leaving a trail of red smoke billowing from the windows. The cops caught up with her in about 15 minutes.

WHAT WAS HE DOING OUT THERE MA’AM? … A man was spending a little time with his mistress in her seventh-floor apartment in Shishi, China, when her husband returned unexpectedly from a business trip. The guy scrambled out the window onto a ledge where he had to spend the night until the husband left for work the next morning. As soon as he left, the woman called the fire department to rescue her lover.

Tracking Kids Like Felons

RETTY MUCH EVERY WEEK, there's another tech company out to solve a problem that does not exist: how to keep tabs on our children every second of every day in order to keep them "safe." This week, I heard of one called Fam-

ilySignal. It's an app that alerts a parent to a child's whereabouts at any given time on a little map and sounds an alarm if the kid wanders beyond the virtual "fence" the parents have determined. So, for instance, if on the way home from school a kid sneaks off to the candy store a block off track, the mom's phone is instantly alerted. He's busted. The device also takes note whenever a child leaves to go somewhere -- a piano lesson, for instance -- and estimates the amount of time it should take to get there. If the kid is late, once again, the parent is alerted. Why does all this stalking make my heart sink and stomach churn? Because products such as these are teaching our kids that they are never safe unless they are supervised -in person or electronically -- by their parents. At the same time, they are teaching parents that letting their kids have any unsupervised time is something no good mom or dad does anymore. Too dangerous. Even though we are back to the crime rate, nationally, of 1963, we are supposed to go about our day as if these are the end times and evil forces are aswirl around our kids. Just as disturbing are the political implications. Gradually, a whole generation is getting used to being under constant surveillance. Someday soon, it may feel "weird" (or, worse, become illegal) to venture out in the world untracked and unobserved.

DEAR AMY: My husband "Steve" and I have been married for eight years, and together for a total of 12. He's 31; I'm 28. Five years ago I cheated on him with my best friend. My husband found out about it and I came clean about everything. I haven't seen or been in touch with the other person since then. For the past five years my life has been a living hell. Steve goes through my phone, texts, calls, emails, social media and mail. I just ignore this because I have nothing to hide. If I'm talking on the phone I'm instantly accused of talking to "my boyfriend." He has been emotionally and verbally abusive, and has been physically abusive twice. When I suggested marriage counseling he said I "wasn't worth it, never have been and never will be." He's "thrown me out" on numerous occasions and then once I pack up my personal belongings he becomes loving and caring toward me. Two weeks ago he sent me a text saying I had two hours to get home or he was throwing all of my stuff in the front lawn. When I got home he had all of my stuff packed. I moved out. Steve and I have talked, but he still refuses marriage counseling. He wants me to move back in, says he loves me and doesn't want me to leave. He said he will give me a month to move back in or he's filing for divorce. I don't know what to do. I've lost all but one of my friends and have lost contact with most of my family because of Steve, so I don't have many people to talk to. I know the easiest thing would be to go back to him, but I just feel in a few months everything will go back to the way it was. -- Walking on Eggshells DEAR WALKING: Please, stay away. Do not return to this relationship. Your husband has locked you into a classic cycle of abuse, manipulation, rage and blame. This will continue until you figure out how to stay permanently away from him. If you give in to "Steve's" emotional manipulation and return to cohabit with him, he may likely raise the stakes during the next cycle. This is dangerous. You have already lost friends and family members due to their frustration watching helplessly while you stay in an abusive relationship. Divorce and distance -- not couples' counseling -- is the answer for you two. You should definitely pursue counseling on your own. DEAR AMY: I am one of those who gets tongue-tied and intimidated about what to say to someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. For too long I have procrastinated on writing a note to the point of doing nothing. I saved all the notes that I received when my Mom died and I sometimes refer to those for inspiration when I have to write a note to a friend who is grieving. You have discussed some of the bad, inadvertent things people say, such as "Don't feel guilty," "Everything happens for a reason" and "It's not your fault." I think readers need more concrete directions of real words to say. You have a terrific audience and if you asked them to provide the nice things that people have said when they are grieving, you will get some fabulous responses that the rest of us can use. -- Reader DEAR READER: Great idea. From the looks of it, he seemed to be headed to my baby's nursery, where just a month earlier, on Christmas Eve, I noticed something heading into the nursery. The nursery seems to be the focal $ point of our visitors. My baby girl hasn't had much luck $ sleeping in there, and to be honest, before the little boy incident, when I would rock my little girl to sleep in there, I always felt uncomfortable, like someone was watching me. Our other boy just confirmed what I felt. I don't think I am the only one in my family to see our visitors. My youngest son who is 4, and also autistic, has mentioned fearlessly that he has seen a ghost during the night. He doesn't seem to be afraid in the least, but has come to sleep with us often. He just says, "I sleep with you ... I see ghost." I believe I have passed the gift of the 6th sense to my children. I got it from my mother and so did my twin sister. My other son, who is 6, also autistic, has told me that he OR see's colors around people ...
