WE GOTTA GET OUTTA HERE! Two men were burglarizing a warehouse when an employee came in, which prompted them to flee. The two men ran to their getaway vehicle, a pickup truck with a trailer carrying a pontoon boat. But, for some reason, the men, who were intoxicated, got into the boat - not the truck - and just yelled obscenities at the deputies who came to arrest them.

The entrance of two companies (Lyft and Uber) as “ridesharing operators” has been

fought by the regular cab companies, especially the large monopoly companies who do not like having real competition. But the years of complaints regarding the poor service being provided for other than airport service needed to be answered. An experimental license from the PUC is used for “… a new, innovative or experimental type or class of common carrier service”. A reading of the joint statement by two PUC commissioners who voted to approve the experimental license notes that the company must meet requirements related to insurance coverage, driver integrity, vehicle safety, and record keeping. Obviously 2014 has been a year of upheaval in the traditional cab environment in Allegheny County. This is what the landscape looks like as of today as it pertains to new carriers in the “app” or “ridesharing” arena: Yellow X — Applied for experimental service on March 13th. Commission approved experimental service on May 22nd for “…transportation of persons originating or terminating within Allegheny County, excluding trips originating from Pittsburgh International Airport.” Lyft — Applied for experimental service on April 3rd. On July 16th applied for emer-

Q. I’M IN THE middle of my career and so tired of running into roadblocks to get promoted. I have found the problem is usually my boss, my coworkers and the customers I tend to work with. How can I succeed when the problem is other people? A. You can succeed only if you are truly willing to hit delete on the blame game. If you are unwilling to keep trying new approaches, then the only one to blame is you. The trouble with blame is that it’s a chocolate brownie experience we all find delicious with our morning coffee. We savor the retelling of how we’ve been done wrong, been misunderstand and not appreciated. We sometimes enjoy pity from others, pity for ourselves, and the certain knowledge we are powerless. The trouble is pity is a lie. Compassion for the difficulty of the human experience is always helpful. Pity, however, tells us we have no power. We

always have the power. Even if the power we have is to decide how we react emotionally. When we luxuriate in pity, we avoid accountability for our problems but also give up the power to get what we want. In the long run, we will be much happier if we accept accountability and that there is always something different we can do than wallow in pity. Yes, it takes both strength and courage to give yourself a hug, acknowledge your emotions, and then ask yourself the question: What rock have you not turned over? Even if you have to try a some things you think won’t work, ask yourself if you’d be better off making a change than continuing to hate your circumstances? Yes, we will often experience circumstances at work that make us feel powerless and without options. Yes, these are upsetting and often even unfair. But the bottom

line is we only are really stuck if we give up on ourselves. Even if you don’t like your circumstances, like yourself enough to think outside the box, search for rocks you haven’t looked under, and try anything different from what hasn’t worked yet.

Wilson pulled Brown over as he and his accomplice walked in the middle of the street; all available evidence shows that Brown then pushed himself through the driver's side window, punched Wilson, went for his gun, was shot in the hand, ran, turned around, charged Wilson, and was shot to death.

Wilson was a white cop; therefore, he was the Racist White Establishment. Brown was a black teenager; therefore, he was the Innocent Black Victim. The parts have already been written; Wilson was merely unlucky enough to land the starring role. And so we expect riots no matter what the outcome of the indictment. Should Wilson escape indictment due to complete lack of evidence, the utopians and their rioting henchmen will attribute that acquittal to the Racist White Establishment. Should he be indicted, the utopians and their rioting henchmen will cite Wilson as merely the latest example of the Racist White Establishment. No matter the antecedent, the consequence has been determined in advance: rage, riots, recriminations. If all of this sounds familiar, that's because it is. Alongside the anti-Racist White Establishment protesters taking to the streets in Ferguson in recent weeks, anti-Israel and pro-ISIS protesters have appeared. All utopian visionaries fighting the status quo -- self-perceived victims -- love their Days of Rage. And these Ragers don't require evidence to incite their emotions. Evidence regarding individuals is for the reasonable; false stories of victims and villains are the fodder for Ragers. Whether we're watching thousands of Muslims across the world protest and riot over cartoons of Mohammed, or whether we're watching hundreds of people in Ferguson riot over a media-manufactured story about a racial killing, Days of Rage provide the outlet for delu-

BROADWAY REMEMBERS ELAINE STRITCH: “Elaine Stritch gave me a wonderful birthday present; a beautiful photograph of a baby girl - herself!” joked the great actor Nathan Lane at the memorial to his fellow actor in New York. He noted that she was “a force of nature.” Nathan and producer Harold Prince opened the two-hour tribute to Elaine, who died on July 17 in her Birmingham, Michigan. The memorial happened in the Hirschfeld Theatre on West 45th Street, in a deluge of rain, with masses of umbrellas clogging the streets. Many others spoke of Elaine as a national theater treasure, the likes of who we won’t see again. She was a talented genius of acting and song and comedy.” Bernadette Peters followed Nathan, singing one of Elaine’s famous songs from an early triumph “Bongo, Bongo, Bongo, I don’t want to leave the Congo - oh

no, no, no, no. Bingle, Bangle, Bungle, I’m so happy in the jungle, I refuse to go!” I used to, in our friendship, beg Elaine to sing this for me over and over again. But like her great song, “Zip” from “Pal Joey,” Elaine just wanted to attack something new.” The memorial offered Stritch gems sung by the gifted likes of Betty Buckley, Christine Ebersole, Michael Feinstein and Laura Benanti. There were films of Alec Baldwin, Elaine’s co-star from “30 Rock,” and from the praised actress Cherry Jones. Elaine’s lawyer, Joseph Rosenthal, came on to tell us what serving the star was really like and he said she had left half a million bucks to the Actors Fund and a big bequest to Juvenile Diabetes and to many friends and those who had served her. This was good to hear as Elaine always behaved as if she were starving to death. She could appear stingy.

THE GREEN SHEET There was an acute tribute from one Julie Keyes, who found herself helped by Elaine when they both lived in Sag Harbor. Holland Taylor, the star of both “Ann” and “Two and a Half Men,” reminded us of Elaine in the prime of her life when she collected shopping bags from Bendel, Bergdorf’s and other fashionable stores and wouldn’t use anything else. Miss Taylor is a really gifted writer, as well as an ac-

tress, and she really nailed Elaine as we all remembered her. The program also offered actor Hunter Ryan Herdlicka from Elaine’s last stage appearance in “A Little Night Music” and Lena Hall, Tony winner from “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” who then sang “Broadway Baby.” There were wonderful film offerings of Elaine singing “Everybody Rise” and many other songs, Elaine barking orders, “doing over” and just

How Do You Know It’s Time to Leave an Abusive Relationship? By Amy Dickinson

DEAR AMY: I need advice, real bad. I'm 19. My boyfriend and I have been together for two years. We have gone through and conquered everything together. We fight a lot. I have tried to walk away many times over the past few months; this is because he is verbally abusive toward me (he always says it's a joke and that I need to relax). He doesn't show me that he loves me anymore. I am extremely attached to his family, so it's like losing them too. This is very hard and the thought of moving on makes me sick to my stomach. How do I know if it's time to walk away and how do I toughen up to do so? -- Scared DEAR SCARED: Human beings are motivated by comfort -- and discomfort. The simple truth is that when the relationship becomes so uncomfortable that you cannot remain in it, you will leave -- and you will be happier and healthier when you do. Some people have a "low bottom." That means they will stay in a terrible situation until they lose everything else. Maybe the neighbors call the police, or they land in the hospital with emotional or physical injuries. Please don't let this be you. Leaving an abusive relationship can be frightening. You fear losing the connection. You fear losing those shreds of goodness you manage to glean from your guy's family. If this relationship is on a downward spiral, the longer you wait, the tougher your recovery will be, because the more abuse you take, the more diminished you will feel. She married a man who helped raise my two young daughters. My older daughter, who graduated from college in March, has informed me that she and her fiance will be marrying next summer. I have yet to ask her about her wedding and what type of ceremony she will have, but she has not asked me to "walk her down the aisle." It may be premature to make any assumptions but I get the feeling that she is going to have her stepfather walk her down the aisle and give her away. Granted -- it is her day. I keep telling myself this and I try not to feel any pain, but I have to admit I am bothered and will definitely feel uncomfortable being at the ceremony. Besides my two daughters, there will be no one else in attendance with whom I am social or wish to be with. If I do attend the ceremony, it may be best to pass on the reception. Or will it? Please share your thoughts and guidance. -- Upset Dad DEAR DAD: You are making all sorts of assumptions before you know what your daughter's choice will be. I suggest you ask her an open-ended question: "What kind of wedding are you having, and how can I help?" She may make an increasingly popular choice to ask both you and her stepfather to accompany her down the aisle. Would you be willing to do this? This wedding presents an opportunity to demonstrate you can be a positive force in the lives of both daughters. This challenging situation calls for you to display loving courtesy and grace, regardless of her choice. You will feel better if you rise to the occasion, and I hope you try.
