Prayer To The Blessed Virgin
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God. Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my Mother, Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse in thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all the things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. (Never Known to Fail)

Report to the People

ONSERVATIVES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE against big government and opposed to the left's belief that problems can and should be solved by Washington. Which is why Ohio governor and Republican presidential candidate John Ka-
sich's proposal to create a new government agency to promote "Judeo-Christian values" is a really bad idea.Put aside for a moment that the federal government does few things well, or within budget, and consider also how preposterous and unworkable such an idea would be. In a speech at the National Press Club in Washington recently, Kasich, who grew up Catholic and remains a man of Christian faith, said he thinks the U.S. needs such an agency to help the country be "more forceful in the battle of ideas." He added, "U.S. public diplomacy and international broadcasting have lost their focus on the case for Western values and ideals and effectively countering your opponents' propaganda and disinformation." Here is a short list of the many problems with such a proposal. Problem No. 1: Who would represent the "Judeos" and the "Christians"? Would it be an Orthodox or reformed Jew? Would a Jewish mystic from the Kabbalah sect be included? There are numerous Christian denominations and sects, so how would Kasich select one as representative of Christianity? Would those left out protest? Would there be lawsuits, not only from excluded religious groups, but from the ACLU? Churchstate separation, you know. Problem No. 2: What "values" would be promoted? Certainly not, one would hope, cultural values, as displayed in many Hollywood films and on television. Are the "traditional values" Kasich supports even practiced by a majority of Americans in an age when we seem to tolerate everything (except traditional values) and when the Kardashians take up far too much brain space? Who would be the ultimate decider on which "values" to promote? And what about people who seek to promote values different from Kasich's? Problem No. 3: Do we really want to turn over what ought to be the responsibility and privilege of individual religious believers to the federal government, which can't even save dollars taken from taxpayers, much less the souls of individual citizens? Too many churches, especially, have retreated from their responsibility to apply their faith to those who are hungry, homeless and imprisoned. Tax-exempt ministries now do the work individuals have been commanded to do. Problem No. 4: How do you promote American "values" to secular and Islamic societies, which mostly do not share them? Who has the credibility to speak for and represent such values, even if they could be agreed upon? A president can promote values by talking about them and endorsing individuals and programs that practice them. The Voice of America and Radio Liberty used to broadcast American values to the world during the Cold War, but in the Internet age, broadcasting, which can be easily jammed, is probably not as effective as the web.

failing public schools and given a chance for a better life. A good education is a value the last major monopoly in the country: public education. Kasich rightly laments the loss of some core values most Americans once embraced.

It wasn't the federal government that got rid of most of them -- though the Supreme Court played a role. Rather, it is we the people who have chosen to live by different values to our detriment and shame. If they are to return, it will take the work of those "Judeo-Christians" and not the dysfunctional federal government. by Cal Thomas (c) 2015 Tribune Content Agency, LLC. THE SAGA OF RICHARD NIXON’S REIGN - A NEW BOOK TELLS MORE: “The Nixon inner circle sounded like both a snake pit and a kindergarten.” That is from Bob Woodward’s compulsively readable, dishy and distressing new book, “The Last of the President’s Men.” This focuses on Alexander P. Butterfield, the Nixon aide who exposed the president’s elaborate and finally ruinous White House taping system. The book, done with Butterfield’s complete cooperation, tells of his three years in the Nixon administration, how he was one of the very few who knew about the taping, and how and why he came to be the one to blow the lid off of it. Woodward and Carl Bernstein were two reporters for the Washington Post whose coverage of the Watergate scandal led to the investigations that brought Butterfield to eventually testify. Nixon, not unsurprisingly, comes off as more than slightly neurotic - a seething mass of resentments, a person unable to connect properly with others, a man who treated his wife, Pat, with such disdain that Butterfield

concludes she was borderline abused. Some of Nixon’s actions are so insecure as to be tragic - comic, such as being enraged over portraits of John F. Kennedy in some staff members’ offices. He had them removed. Nixon referred to the pictures as “an infestation!” The book also contains some amazing Nixon memos, including one sent to Henry Kissinger, in which he complains that after 10 years of bombing Vietnam, “the result has been zilch!” Nixon wrote that if nobody could give him a reason for the failure, then continued air operations make no sense. However, as Woodward points out: “Rather than forsaking bombing, Nixon once again embraced it.” But the most fascinating aspect of the new book is Butterfield’s own conflicted views of Nixon, and why he “told all.” Butterfield comes off as a man with, if not as much neu-

late, great, Rodney Dangerfield's routine. Rodney, to those too young to have ever seen him, was famous for "getting no respect." Here are a few he was famous for: "A girl phoned me and said, 'Come on over. There's nobody home.' I went over. Nobody was home!" "I'm so ugly my father carried around a picture of the kid that came with his wallet." "A hooker once told me she had a headache." rotic baggage as Nixon -one hardly thinks that is possible!, then enough to give this book a push-pull kind of vibe, a frisson of settling scores. Butterfield was instantly both offended and stunned by Nixon’s social ineptitude and his sometimes sad attempts to make contact. In the case of one attractive female aide, his contact was physical and deeply embarrassing to all who witnessed it. Butterfield, however, seems to be a man easily offended, a grudge-holder - like Nixon and somewhat idealistic, at least at the time of his White House tenure. He didn’t understand, and perhaps to his credit, that when the president says jump, you say, “How high?” That everything revolves around the commander in chief and in time, one’s only response - no matter your personal feelings on any given matter is - “Yes, sir!” Not even Butterfield’s many years in the military often a hotbed of intrigue had prepared him for the machinations of the White House. Woodward really pushes Butterfield hard in interviews conducted for the book, and one is left as conflicted as the former aide was/is, over his time with Nixon and the revelation that led to Nixon’s resignation. I came away from the book with a profound depression over all politics. Butterfield called the Nixon White House a cesspool. But I wonder what administration isn’t one!
I HAVE KNOWN my friend Joel Schumacher since the early ‘70s when he became quite the favorite of Vogue’s Diana Vreeland. And he was very popular in the fashion world. I did share a house in Bridgehampton with him for about 18 years -when we had no idea what the Hamptons would become - and as he advanced, he once said, upon finding himself listed on “The In List,” the problem was that it meant one would invariably, sooner or later, be on “The Out List.” We shared an apartment in Manhattan, when he soon announced, “I am going to Hollywood to be a director!” I replied to this, “And I am Lana Turner.” Nevertheless, he went and soon became famous for his early films featuring the Brat Pack. -“St Elmo’s Fire,” etc.- I won’t bore you with a list of his hits and of the stars he made, many of whom still reign today. I read the story on Joel in the Times, which described his latest tack, directing a play titled “Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom,” by Jennifer Haley, which opened last night at The Flea Theatre in New York. I confess I didn’t follow or quite understand this explanation of the play. But I certainly want to see what my friend Joel does for one of his encores! I have never ceased to be amazed at his talents and his grasp of history and social movements and his sense of fun. Maybe “Neighborhood 3” will take our minds off of not Donald, or Ben Carson or Hillary, but the sadness and alarm of the tragedy in Paris and the fact that evidentially, religious wars and violence have not yet run their course.

THE GREEN SHEET
ASTRO forecast Pisces Future Uncertain
ARIES (MAR 21- APR. 19): Recharge your batteries. Take advantage of the opportunity to put your feet up as the week ahead just might be fraught with deadlines and responsibilities. Maintain a real pleasant demeanor and try your best to avoid getting involved with arguments like the plague. TAURUS (APR. 20- MAY 20): Apples don’t fall too far from the tree. Upon reflection, you may realize that the same things that really irk you when dealing with family members are traits that you possess yourself. Be flexible this week and bend the rules as needed. Give time to a close friend in need, GEMINI (MAY 21- JUNE 20): Let your mind wander. Use your very creative side; explore your imagination to get satisfaction. Don’t allow discussions to become too deep or heated and save making important decisions for later in the week. CANCER (JUNE 21- JULY 22): There may be a tendency to become too emotional and to take criticism too personally this week. Put all business and serious issues on the back burner today and focus on rest and relaxation. LEO (JULY 23- AUG. 22): You may be your own worst critic. Self-doubt may cause your self-assessment of your abilities to be off the mark. In fact, you are more than able to get the job done. Give yourself a little bit of credit and meet challenges head on this week.
VIRGO (AUG. 23- SEPT. 22): Facts may look better on paper. You may have all the answers in your head, but conveying them to other people could be problematic. Don’t try to push your agenda on someone else, bide your time to find the perfect opportunity. LIBRA (SEPT. 23- OCT. 22.): Carpe diem. Seize the day by doing the things you want to do and being around those whose company you enjoy most. Be careful not to let frivolous spending habits get out of hand or overlook a consuming debt in the week ahead. SCORPIO (OCT. 23- NOV. 21): When the going gets tough, the tough get going. A lack of resources may bog down the progress of your endeavor. Focus on solutions instead of the problem as this week unfolds and all will turn out for the best. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22DEC. 21): Stick to routines just simply go through the motions. As the week begins, do all that is expected and don’t start new initiatives or take on added responsibilities. Conversations with the wrong person could just be a waste of time. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22JAN. 19): There’s no need to show off. Trying to prove that you are the best may leave you feeling silly when you find that you are the only one in the competition. Don’t assume that everyone else shares your work ethic in the week ahead.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20FEB. 18): There may be more than two sides to the coin. If a decision that needs to be made has several different options that seem appealing, then you are not yet ready to make a choice. Take time to evaluate every angle. PISCES (FEB. 19- MAR. 20): The future is uncertain. There is no real way of telling how events may unfold right now. It is not a good time for starting a new project or setting plans into motion. Don’t let a casual conversation turn into an added responsibility.
IF NOVEMBER 29 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: Focus on developing friendships during the upcoming six to eight weeks. You may be centered on achieving your ambitions and miss out on social interchanges that will enrich your life unless you make group participation a priority. Stick to what you know and make no changes to your finances or job throughout January and February. If you gather information and study with experts you will be able to use your knowledge to make success a reality.

people has granted broad awareness to the culture of "microaggression" -- unintended slights taken as grave insults by their victims; they've also called for "trigger warnings," alerts that certain communications may dredge up unpleasant past memories or ideas. With such ghoulish cruelties haunting the most privileged generation in human history, naturally we'd want to toss out the bedrock of Western civilization: The right to debate, to express unpopular

taunt. We don't like the notion that your disapproval of an opinion gives you the right to call the men with the guns; we find that perspective tyrannical and threatening. We're not inter-
ested in your subjective feelings-world, in which you claim that innocuous statements somehow harm you in material ways. We don't believe that self-appointed victim status grants you the ability to use force. We think you ought to develop a thicker skin -- the sort of skin necessary to enjoy freedom. If your political agoraphobia prevents you from engaging in the arguments that characterize free countries, that doesn't mean you should lock us all away in our "safe spaces." Those "safe spaces" are called jail cells, and the only people who want to establish them are jackbooted fascists masquerading as hippy-dippy caring experts. If all of this seems relatively basic, that's because it is. But because America forgot to teach her children those basics, they will be torn out by the root. The American university system has become Ground Zero for the anti-free speech movement. That's because young people always look for a cause for which to fight, an oppressive force to crush. Young people aren't looking for comfort; as George Orwell wrote in 1940 regarding the appeal of the Nazis, "Nearly all western thought since the last war, certainly all 'progressive' thought, has assumed tacitly that human beings desire nothing beyond ease, security and avoidance of pain. In such a view of life there is no room, for instance, for patriotism and the military virtues. Hitler, because in his own joyless mind he feels it with exceptional strength, knows that human beings don't only want comfort, safety, short working-hours, hygiene, birth-control and, in general, common sense; they also, at least intermittently, want struggle and self-sacrifice, not to mention drums, flags and loyalty-parades." How can today's young people enjoy such struggle?
DEAR EDITOR: I was forced into retirement in 1987, after 28 years, due to my employer going out of business. My pension was $10,000 a year. It has NOT increased in 28 years. My future employers offered no pension. In 2014 my school tax was $2,100 plus. Combined taxes were $3,400. In 2014 my HMO co-pays and out of pocket expenses were $7,000. That is more than my pension and then there is food and utilities. Can the politicians, "government employees" and teachers live on that? And I had to work until 65 not 55. For every dollar I give for their pensions that is one less that I have. In 2016 there will be no Social Security increase but I am sure those above groups will get their COL and contractual yearly increases! I have not had any children in the North Hills Schools since 1985. There were 700 plus graduates in their classes. Now it is 350, yet, school district personnel has in-
creased. Several months ago school board member, Lou Nudi, proudly (?) stated, "We have kept class sizes low and avoided furlough." I thought that the school board was elected by the public for the "public good". That sounds like a union leader to me. Tens-of-thousands of dollars were recently allocated for Computer Game Design! Wouldn't that be an elective course for Community College? When I was hospitalized last year two young nurses, on separate occasions, asked about my family. When I said I had a daughter living in Chattanooga, they said, "Where is that?" I didn't ask what school district they graduated from. Don't schools teach history (Civil War) or Geography? Also, twice while eating out, there was no electric for the cash register. The young girls could not figure out change. WHY? Why do colleges have to offer remedial courses for incoming freshmen? What are my taxes REALLY paying for? WILLIAM BARKSCHAT West View

HEALTH FAIR
PREVENTION How to Adjust to a Healthier Diet
CHANGE OFTEN requires an adjustment period. Men and women who switch jobs may need a few weeks before they feel fully comfortable in a new office, while students changing schools may also need some time to adapt to their new surroundings. An adjustment period is also common when people decide to adopt healthier diets. Diet is often habit forming, and men and women will need some time to adjust as they kick some bad dietary habits in favor of healthier fare. The following are simple ways to make that adjustment period a little easier to swallow. · Go slowly. Some people are very capable of going cold turkey when adjusting to a
new diet, while others must take a very gradual approach. Unless a health condition that requires immediate change is driving your dietary changes, take things slowly so your body acclimates to a new diet over time. Such an approach may make your efforts more successful over the long haul than making more sudden, drastic changes. For example, suddenly cutting your daily calorie intake in half may force you into old, unhealthy habits when hunger pangs inevitably arise. But gradually reducing your caloric intake over time may make it easier for your body to adjust, decreasing the likelihood that you might relapse into bad habits.
THE GREEN SHEET · Explain your motivation to loved ones. Adults may find adjusting to a new diet difficult unless their spouses and - or families are making similar adjustments. If you are the only member of your household who will be adjusting to a new diet, explain your efforts and motivation to your loved ones. Such an explanation will make them less likely to bring unhealthy foods into your home. In addition, your loved ones can prove an invaluable source of support as you make this big adjustment in your life. · Embrace positive results. Just because you have adopted a new diet does not always mean you will see immediate results. Fad diets meant to last just a few weeks may produce immediate results, but such results will not withstand the test of time, and you may even gain weight when you revert to some of your old eating habits. The right diet will produce long--
lasting results, but you must allow for some time before such diets lead to significant weight loss. In the meantime, place more emphasis on how you feel than the figure that shows up on your bathroom scale each morning. Upon adopting a healthier diet, you will start to notice how much better you feel than you felt when eating a diet filled with unhealthy foods. Remind yourself of this extra hop in your step as you continue to a healthier lifestyle. · Don't give up. Your adjustment will require some discipline, and there may be moments when you backslide into bad habits. If that happens, don't allow it to derail all of the progress you have made since switching to a healthier diet. Just accept that you had a setback and resolve to do your best to avoid having another one. The sooner you get back on a healthier track, the better you will feel.

Man Offers One Story, Facebook Reveals Another By Amy Dickinson
DEAR AMY: I have recently become involved with a new guy, and we clicked immediately. I've had a great time getting to know him and meeting his close friends. It's been nice and flowing smoothly. But, of course, there's a catch. His Facebook profile still says he's in a relationship with another girl, whom he has been with for almost eight years. His profile picture even has her in it! I asked him about it on our first date, he declared he "didn't care about Facebook" and that he and this girl hadn't spoken in three weeks (doesn't seem like an extraordinarily long amount of time). He explained they had been on/off for two years, and it just isn't working for them anymore. If they aren't really together, why is she still a part of his Facebook? Am I wrong to be wary of this? Why hasn't she removed their relationship from FB, if they are actually over? I feel by not changing his status he's leaving room for the possibility of their relationship rekindling. This is a new dating issue specific to my generation. It's been hard for me to detach myself from the situation and view it from an outside perspective. What should I take seriously from his social media, and what doesn't matter? I don't want to fall head over heels for this guy, then have his ex come back out of the woodwork and have my heart broken. -- Generation Facebook DEAR GENERATION FACEBOOK: Some issues are generational, and some are (more or less) eternal. A person in a long-term relationship who starts testing the waters before actually ending said relationship, for instance. That's one for the ages. There are many negatives about Facebook, but one positive aspect of social media is that you can see -- very easily -- where people stand. Do not let this person gaslight you into thinking that this issue isn't important. You can say to him, "Well, your Facebook status might not be important to you, but it's important to me. I'm not interested in dating you if you're in another relationship. Let me know if you become available." DEAR AMY: My brother and his fiancee have decided to tie the knot next week in a courthouse ceremony. They extended an invite to a potluck reception at their home, with various registries listed. I was shocked to receive an email from my brother shortly after specifying what food and liquor I "have" to bring, including a link to a recipe. My parents received the same, but with a more extensive list. I don't mind bringing what I was assigned and would like to be supportive, but found the gesture to be tacky. How should I address this? -- I'll Bring the Cake DEAR CAKE: Yep. This is pretty tacky. But here's how you should address it: "Brother, I'm happy for you. I'll do my best to make and bring the best cake I'm capable of making." What I'm suggesting is that you respond with generosity and love to this wedding. If your brother and his new bride continue to be specific in their demands past this day -- or ungracious and ungrateful in responding to your efforts -- then you have my permission to tell them to step off. DEAR AMY: The letter from "Destroyed" shook me to my very core. Destroyed described a marriage with a man who manipulated her, uprooted and moved her away from her support system, isolated her from her profession, friends and family members and belittled her until she felt worthless and confused. This is exactly what happened in my marriage. I firmly believe that if I hadn't escaped it, I wouldn't be here now. I am genuinely afraid for Destroyed and her children and I hope that rather than follow your advice and try to rebuild her life within this marriage, she should leave the marriage now. -- Survivor DEAR SURVIVOR: Many readers offered supportive advice similar to yours. While I did advise this woman to try to change her own life (ultimately leaving the marriage, if necessary), I agree that it might not be possible. I hope she sees these supportive comments and follows your advice.

Monaco’s Prince Rainier, who is played by Tim Roth, but it focuses on a period when she was giving serious consideration to resuming her screen career since Alfred Hitchcock wanted her for the title role in “Marnie.” Coinciding political considerations left her torn. Frank Langella, Parker Posey, Derek Jacobi and Milo Ventimiglia also are featured. MOMENTUM: After playing James Bond’s main female ally in “Quantum of Solace,” Olga Kurylenko sees considerable action again in this melodrama, casting her as a covert operative who ends up in the crosshairs of a professional assassin, played by James Purefoy. Well-trained in espionage techniques, she uses her skills to stay alive while still seeking revenge for her slain friends. Morgan Freeman, certainly not an unknown commodity in tales of this nature, also stars. AMY: The late Amy Winehouse, the unconventional music star whose personal struggles became as much a media focus as her professional triumphs, is the subject of this very well done documentary. Many other artists whose lives and careers she impacted, including Tony Bennett and Mark Ronson, comment on her ... and while those segments add insight, clearly the most telling content here is that which showcases Grammy winner Winehouse herself in candid conversation and stunning performance.

Ghostly
ENCOUNTERS The Ghost Of My Grampa By: database@idm.net.lb
HELLO, MY NAME IS SIMONE. I do have a ghost story but it is not as freeky and spine tingling as you would expect to hear. However, it is not from my own experience but rather from my mother's. The story happened when I was just fifteen months old, my mother recalls as she was explaining it to me one afternoon in the car. She says that my grampa (my dad's father) showed great love toward me---me being his first grandchild. When my sister was born one year after my birth, my grampa was sitting down in the family room watching television and my dad at work and my mom and gramma cooking in the kitchen. All of a sudden, my grampa collapsed and started whining. My mom went downstairs to see what had happened and it turns out he was having a heart attack. To make a long story short, he died in her arms in the emergency room. Even though he loved his only son very much, my grampa had a special connection with my mom. Moving on, one night around two a.m. in the morning, three months after my grampa died, my mom and dad awoke to hear a burglar alarm go off in the house. They ran downstairs to see what was going on. Now in the family room where my grampa had collapsed, there was a window that would never open. It was always barred shut and no matter how much my dad tried with his muscles, he could never get it open. Guess what? Turns out that that window had been opened all the way causing the alarm to go off. My mom closed it and they went back upstairs to bed. The next night the alarm went off once more. This time only my mom went down to close that window. It occured once more the next night. My mom opened the conversation with my dad and gramma about ghost hauntings of my grampa. My dad and gramma were skeptical about the supernatural so they disagreed with my mom and closed the subject. She decided to avoid it too because it was a sensitive subject since he had only recently died. On the fourth night my mom woke up with the alarm ONCE MORE. She went downstairs, closed the window, and turned off the alarm. She walked to her room, but stopped. She had a gut feeling she should check on me and my sister. So she walked in and saw us sound asleep. She continued her check into my gramma's room which overlooks the street. She saw her sleeping. However, her window was open, so she went to close it. As she reached the window, she got a glimpse of my grampa. He was a solid-looking figure (just like a normal person) wearing the clothes that he had died in. She stared at him and he smiled and started crying. They stared into each others eyes for about 10 full minutes. Then he turned around and walked away down our street into a smoggy kind-of cloudy looking mist. My mom tells me she believes he wanted to say good-bye to her and that those clouds represent heaven---as if he had walked, in her eyesight, right into heaven. I believe he's our gaurdian angel. ©theshadowlands.net
THE GREEN SHEET BLOOD AND OIL: The season finale saw the losers in the power struggle decide whether to stay in the Bakken and battle again, or give up and try to rebuild their lives someplace else. However, at least one person didn’t have an option to choose their future path. Due to low ratings, the first season of Blood and Oil ended prematurely. BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL: When Ivy was injured by electrocution during an argument with Steffy, suspicions about Steffy’s role began to spread. Steffy soon realized that Liam didn’t believe that she didn’t cause Ivy harm, and pleaded with him not to end their engagement. Steffy learned the hard way that making an apology wasn’t enough when Ivy filed a restraining order against her. Wyatt accused Thomas of being responsible for Ivy’s condition. Despite Zende’s valiant efforts to support Nicole, Maya witnessed how the pregnancy is taking a toll on her sister’s relationship with Zende.

Instead, Lucious was learned that his instincts had failed and the entire business strategy was part of a scheme that could ruin everything.

Luca finally pulled away from Marisa’s seduction attempt, realizing she was only kissing him to find out information about their daughter. Meanwhile, Noah asked Kevin for help in finding dirt on Luca. Sharon told Dr. Anderson she worries about losing her baby.

The Lost Shall Be Found
I
T'S ABOUT AS TRITE A STORY as you can get: Last week, I lost my phone on the bus here in my burg, New York City. Before I even realized it was missing, I sat down at my computer and found emails from my family: "Call a lady named Grace. She has your phone."
She did indeed. She'd found it on the seat next to her, taken it with her to work and reached the "favorites" on my contact list. Soon I was at the United Basket factory, asking for Grace Chen, who cheerfully handed me my Android, adamantly refused a reward and hurried back to her job. Which reminded me that a couple of months ago when I lost my wallet, another nice young woman had done the same thing. Could it be that this is the way of the world? Finders are not keepers? I started asking around. "I got a message that said, 'I found your phone. Please call me,'" recalls Natalie Yates, co-founder of the digital agency Blue Iceberg in Manhattan. She did. It was a taxi driver all the way out in the suburbs. "He'd just gotten off his shift, found the phone, and he said that once his wife got home, she could take care of the kids and he could drive back in with his truck to bring me my phone." Drive it in? After his shift?

Anyone Can Be An Organ Donor - No Matter Their Age DEAR MAYO CLINIC: Is there an age that’s too old to be an organ donor? Also, is marking organ donor on my driver’s license the only thing I need to do to become a donor, or would my family still be allowed to make a different decision? ANSWER: Almost everyone can be an organ donor, no matter your age. Specifying your choice to be a donor when you renew your driver’s license, or adding your name to your state’s registry is all you need to do. However, it is a good idea to talk to your family so they know what you want. There is a critical need for donated organs. Everyday, about seventy five people in the U.S. gets an organ trans-

plant. About 130 new people are put on transplant waiting lists each day. At this time, more than 114,000 people in this country need an organ transplant, but not everyone can get a transplant, because there are not enough donors. Living donor transplants are popular options for liver and kidney transplantation. Living donor liver transplants work well because the liver can regenerate itself. A portion of the donor liver is removed for transplant. The remaining liver grows to the right size in the donor, as does the piece in the transplant recipient. Often organs for transplants come from deceased donors. Although it is possible that

For her finding efforts, performer Laurie Gamache got some lovely wine. "I used to live in a little basement studio on West 96th Street," said Laurie. "I was getting ready to go on the

road with 'A Chorus Line,' and so I was cleaning out the place." In a crack in the plaster of her fireplace, she found a class ring. The year on the ring was 1980-something, and this was still in the '80s. There was a name engraved, too. Laurie put it in a box in her desk drawer, intending to try to find the owner. But then it slipped her mind. "By the time I got back -- years later -- I forgot all about it," she explained. But when she was preparing for a move, she cleaned out her desk and opened a little box she found. Oh,

yes! The ring! How to find its owner? Well, in the intervening years, a device had been invented to do just that: the Internet. Laurie instantly found the owner online -- an upstate judge -- and sent it back to her. The judge's husband runs a winery, so the exchange concluded with a drinkable reward, nicely aged. Just like the ring. Dana Rubin, CEO at Rubin & Co, an executive communications and content creation company, came home one night and was devastated to find her apartment had been ransacked. What pained her most was the loss of a bag of jewelry, including sentimental pieces given to her by her parents. About a year later, she called an organization to come pick up some furniture she was donating. As the workers lifted up her mattress... there was the jewelry bag. She'd hidden it there for safekeeping. Said Dana, "I'd been sleeping on it all year." In a world of good people and eureka moments, there seems to be only one other way to guarantee finding a lost and precious item, at least according to my sister-in-law: Go online and shop for the lost item. Press "Purchase." Look up. There it is.

some organs may not work as well from older donors, all have the potential to become an organ donor. In fact, donated livers often come from people in their 70s and 80s, and these older donor livers work well. On the other end of the spectrum, no one is too young to become an organ donor. Children younger than 18 do not have the authority to make a legal decision about their organ donation status, but many children and teens feel strongly about donating their organs. It is important for families to have conversations about organ donation and for parents to listen to what their children have to say. Keep in mind, too, that health problems should not keep anyone from choosing to be an organ donor. Some chronic health conditions may prevent certain organs from being donated. That does not mean other organs can’t be successfully trans planted. Your donor designation is a legally binding decision. That means your wishes will be carried out after you die, even if your family does not agree with them. It is important to make sure your family knows you want to be an organ donor, though. Talk with them about your reasons for wanting to be a donor, so they understand why it’s important to you. Right now, people on transplant waiting lists are dying because there are not enough organs for everyone who needs them. Organ transplantation is very successful, but donor organ availability is absolutely critical to its success. Making the decision to become an organ donor can be a decision that saves lives.

Q. You can stand out by developing five very simple habits that about one in 10 people -or fewer- in business use. None of these habits requires an advanced degree, specialized training or even a brilliant intellect. -Be on time and arrive at meetings early. Nothing says disrespect and lack of work ethic like being less than punctual especially for a first meeting. -Keep your word, even when it is inconvenient, you have a better offer or you are too busy. -Attempt to see the other person’s agenda and point of view. Don’t become so overly focused on your own goal that you forget that the other person also needs to win. -Pretend you are running the business, and see what else you could do in your job to help. Take the initiative to propose you take care of these tasks. Note: this is the easiest way to receive promotions. -Ask about the weekend on Monday. Take an interest in the personal lives of those you work with. People are more interested in going the extra mile for those that actually get to know them.
You may be shocked to notice these tasks are so simple that you wonder why anyone might fail to do them. These habits require emotional character traits like empathy, integrity and being proactive. The habits aren’t hard, but the developing the character traits can be challenging for most of us. The reason you will get so far ahead if you cultivate these practices is almost no one else in your workplace is currently doing every one. If you’ll just do these five simple things, your manager and your senior managers won’t be able to avoid noticing you. They’ll be too busy being grateful and impressed not to consider moving you up the corporate food chain. Let me give a common example. You decide it’s time to schedule a meeting. You get a better offer. You cancel your first meeting letting the first person know you have a better offer. Sure, you may think this is very reasonable. You’ve also just established you would have no problem throwing your own mother under the bus if something better comes along. Consider how many people will invest in you now?
The best way to work with multiple priorities while having integrity is to carefully and thoroughly weigh any commitment you are considering. There’s not a problem saying you need to think about it or you cannot commit. You may even turn down a commitment and then later find yourself free, go back and find out if the offer is still open. People you work with would rather be pleasantly surprised you showed up than expecting you and hearing you found something more important to do. Unlike the old days, most people’s word is no longer their bond. If people discover you commit to fewer agreements but they can count on you if you make a promise, you will always be in demand. The last three tips all require empathy for people around you. Work to see your workplace through the eyes of others around you. You’ll discover invaluable tasks you could do and also see creative new ways to negotiate. Integrity and empathy with these tools will open up horizons for you and make you remember why working for a living could be fun!
