hat does a white boy from the white suburbs of washington, d.C., have to say about the passing of soul singer aretha Franklin? at 16, i was a dJ on a local radio station, playing the rock 'n' roll and doowop recordings of the day. Many of the artists were black. Richard Penniman (aka "Little Richard") tells a funny story about white kids back then. in "hail, hail, Rock 'n' Roll," the 1987 documentary about Chuck berry, Little Richard noted that white kids would have Pat boone's albums on the top of their dressers to fool their parents, but the records of black artists hidden inside the dresser drawers. the music of black artists like aretha Franklin was soulful, and some of it was incredibly sexy, like Fats domino's "i Found My thrill on blueberry hill." black artists, especially gospel singers, influenced elvis Presley and other white singers of the day, who mimicked their style and artistry, sanitized it, and then presented it to white audiences, many of whom would not have accepted music sung by blacks. aretha Franklin began singing in church, and her music, her soaring voice, which touched every part of one's anatomy from head, to heart, to soul, soon became a vital part of the civil rights songbook. it was my privilege to see many of these performers in person, including ella Fitzgerald, Count basie and duke ellington and their orchestras, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway in the all-black cast of "hello, dolly" starring Pearl bailey, and many others on tV and in film, such as Nat "King" Cole, sammy davis Jr., diana Ross and the supremes, the Platters and the doo-wop singers of the '50s. these performers and their stories of racism and injustice helped form my positive views of the civil rights movement, along with my time at NbC News in washington where i listened to stories brought back by reporters who had covered demonstrations in the south, meant to be peaceful, but which quickly devolved into violent confrontation, and even acts of murder perpetrated by racists, a word that today is too lightly and too often overused. Little Richard tells a story about how he and other black artists would writes songs only to see the name of a white label owner or producer credited with their authorship, resulting in royalties going to them, leaving black artists with little to nothing. aretha Franklin suffered similar inequities. take her most famous song, "Respect." it was written by the late otis Redding, but as the New york times reported, "...every time the song is played on the radio, Mr. Redding's estate ... has been paid. Ms. Franklin never was." i count two of Franklin's performances among my favorites. one is her role as a waitress in the cult hit "the blues brothers," starring dan aykroyd and John belushi, which also included knockout performances by Ray Charles and Cab Calloway. Franklin sings "think" in a scene so fantastically choreographed that it would have been a showstopper on the broadway stage. My other favorite performance is a duet with tony bennett titled "how do you Keep the Music Playing?" if you haven't seen it, go to youtube. i tear up every time i watch. the opening lyric goes: "how do you keep the music playing? how do you make it last? how do you keep the song from fading too fast? how will we keep aretha Franklin's music from fading? by playing it over and over again and introducing future generations to it, as we might any other classic. hers is a story in song and a life that inspired and influenced millions. that's not a bad epitaph for anyone.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL: Steffy made it clear to her mother that she doesn't want any drama disturbing Hope and Liam's wedding, but Taylor paid an unexpected and uncomfortable visit to Liam, making a final attempt on Steffy's behalf. Bill admitted to Justin that he didn't expect to be invited to the wedding, but it still pains him not to be with Liam. Following the ceremony, which managed to be completed without a disturbance, Taylor and Brooke got into an argument that ended in a wedding cake-throwing melee. As Thorne grew closer to Will, he assured Katie that if Bill isn't involved in Will's life, he intends to be there for him. Thorne encouraged Katie to proceed with a court case for full custody of Will.

THE ORIGINALS: With New Orleans facing a cataclysm, Rebekah, Kol, Klaus, Elijah and Marcel were stuck together in a magical version of the Mikaelson compound. YOUNG AND RESTLESS: Phyllis' outreach to Summer didn't stop Summer from pursuing Billy. When Kyle offered to cancel the bet, Summer didn't quit, making Kyle realize that she has feelings for Billy. Working on Ashley's behalf, Jack convinced Nick to buy the company that holds the Jaboutique leases. Not only did Nick agree, but he raised the rents, infuriating Billy and escalating their feud. Neil and Ashley decided to take things slowly in their relationship. Abby was caught off guard and felt uncomfortable when Sharon in a peacemaking gesture asked her to be a bridesmaid at her and Nick's wedding, but with Nick and Arturo's help, Abby agreed to be part of the bridal party. Lily stayed focused on trying to make peace with Devon.

RENDS ARE NOT SOMETHING I would say I'm great at predicting. Years ago, when I was passing the Empire State Building, two tourists asked me whether I'd take their picture. "Sure," I said. One handed me a phone. "What

the heck?" said I. "Oh, you can take pictures with a phone now," they told me. Turns out they were shills for one of the tech companies -- Sony or Samsung or something. Whatever, their job was to introduce the public to the idea that phones could double as cameras and how cool that was. I proceeded to write a column: "Yeah, just what we need, camera phones. Why not a bra that's also a toaster? Shoes that dispense glue? How about a hat that can drive?" So maybe you can't totally trust me when I say that I've been reading up on trends and that I think these things are on their way. But here goes. -- Running in the dark. Not "running at night," when at least there's a moon. Running on a track in pitch-blackness. I don't even get how people survive this, much less why they'd want to do it. But the company Asics has launched "Blackout Track," which ostensibly helps people concentrate -- wait, no, sorry. The word is no longer concentrate; it's "be more mindful." I'd be pretty mindful, too, if I worried that my next step could slam me smack into the idiot in front of me, who's so stupid he's jogging in the dark. -- Male makeup. Men in China are supposedly getting into cosmetics. Sales of guy goop are going up by double digits, according to Jing Daily, a report on luxury goods in China. It quotes one 22-year-old saying he would never tell his dad he's wearing makeup, but he dabs on concealer and some "brightening products" every day. China owes the popularity of this trend in part to celebrity males willing to be the face of the new face, including the singer/actor Luhan, who is considered the Chinese Justin Bieber. The slang for attractive young men with cosmetically flawless skin is "little fresh meat." You'd think that alone might stop this trend, but so far, no. -- Mayonnaise ice cream. Not sure whether this is a real trend or just something so gross everyone is talking about it. Either way, mushy, smushy Hellmann's ice cream is the creation of Ice, which has a somewhat unfortunate name but is actually an artisanal ice cream shop. (And is there anything that hasn't been artisanalized yet? Is there an artisanal eyeglass shop selling prescriptions that are a little wavy and air-bubbled but ohso chic?) Anyway, Ice's owner said the mayo-cream is a "full-on hit of fat and cream, followed with an eggy, milky aftertaste." Hard to resist with a description like that, right? But here we are, talking about it, so hats off to Ice. -- Pokemon meets Hilfiger. Tommy Hilfiger's new Xplore clothes come with chips embedded in them. Somehow, between the chips and an app on your phone, you can rack up points just by wearing your Xplore clothes to certain places Tommy is presumably partnering with. It's like "Pokemon Go," and you're the Pokemon. (Or the app. Or the sap.) While you get rewards, Tommy gets the reward of "figgering" out where you are and how often you wear his clothes. -Edible coffee cups. We're talking cup-shaped wafers that can withstand heat and liquid but still taste good when you're done sipping. They're called Cupffees. This idea is so obvious I am kicking myself.
