THANK YOU FOR GIVING!

MORE THAN SPECTATORS When our students return from mission trips abroad, they often express surprise over the great impact the smallest kindness brings. Last January, for example, some of our young men organized a boys’ club in an impoverished neighborhood in Nicaragua. They arranged games of baseball, soccer, dodge ball, tag, capture the flag and a new sport the boys discovered – climbing on our students’ backs and shouting, “¡Correra! ¡Correra!” Race! Race!

Eden, but He chose instead to tend it through Adam’s hand. He might have gone solo to satisfy a hungry crowd on a hillside, but He chose instead to distribute bread and fish through His disciples. He might have broadcast the Gospel unassisted to a world in need, but He chose instead to entrust that urgent work to His church. He might have single-handedly brought joy to those boys in Nicaragua, but He chose instead to work through the strong backs and willing hearts of our students.

The GC men sprinted about 20 yards and back, carrying their loads. By all reports, the dash thoroughly delighted the boys and exhausted the men.

Could it be that our Lord finds pleasure in working with us? That it delights Him?

Clay Buhler ’14 galloped those 40 yards again and again. It was just one activity among many that left him deeply affected by his work in Nicaragua. When he returned to campus, thoughts of the missionaries with whom he partnered lingered. The vibrancy of their “radical trust and obedience” and “irresistible faith” seized his imagination. “My soul came alive in Nicaragua,” he concluded. “The bond that I formed with the other team members was like nothing I’ve ever felt. I now understand that I felt this way because I had never been so close to eternity. My time in Nicaragua was the closest I’ve come to what I consider God’s call to Christians. The community I felt was otherworldly.” Otherworldly, indeed. God seems to prefer working in partnership with His children. He might have created a self-sustaining garden in

God wants us to be more than spectators; He wants us to engage with Him. When He plants the seeds of an idea in our imaginations and whispers an invitation for us to join Him, He calls us into partnership that often requires our hands and feet, our voices, our backs, our prayers, our purse. He longs to hear us say, “Yes, count me in.” It is with pleasure that I present our 2013 President’s Report. It contains 17 accounts of students and alumni saying “yes” to God’s call in their local and neighboring communities. It also includes the names of our financial champions – each one, a partner in the good work of Greenville College. Your partner in Christ’s work, Ivan Filby, President

TIME OUT – Each Friday before a home game, nearly 100 football players and coaches put servant-leadership theory to practice by visiting nursing home residents, teaching kids football skills, helping local residents with yard work and washing windows. “In order to be a leader in the community, you must serve,” says Interim Head Coach Robbie Schomaker. “We hope that after four years, our players will take this servant’s heart with them to wherever they put down roots.” The Panthers posted a 9-1 season this fall and registered the second longest winning streak in NCAA Division III history.

KICKS FOR KIDS – GC volleyball players kicked off the school year by hosting a shoe fair that provided new “back to school” shoes for needy children in Bond County. The team raised $2,000 and outfitted 50 children, ages 5-11, with footwear. Service is essential to GC volleyball, according to Coach Tom Ackerman ’99. “We want players to become better in every aspect of their lives.” Coach Ackerman registered his 200th career win this season and was named conference Coach of the Year. Food donations from partners like Red Fire Farm and Fiore’s Bakery dictated that his meals lean heavily on greens in the spring and root vegetables in the fall. One Saturday when bread arrived, but no produce, Whitlock prepared French toast. The various breads – apple cinnamon, cranberry, and rye – presented an opportunity for him to practice more of Child’s wisdom: “Be fearless, and above all, have fun!”

Each Saturday at midday, good food, friendly conversation and entertainment create a great dining out experience for patrons of the Crossroads Café, where seniors eat for free. Housed in the First Baptist Church of Jamaica Plain in suburban Boston, the luncheon averages 50 patrons each week – a 400% increase since its early days more than two years ago. Chef Geoff Whitlock ’05 developed the concept with a friend and faithfully supplied his culinary skills each Saturday. Though he recently relocated to attend graduate school, the café is still going strong. Julia Child declared there is no end to imagination in cooking, and Whitlock agrees. “I would be laughed out of my old culinary school if they saw some of the stuff I pulled off in that kitchen.”

“Never in my life would I imagine making French toast with sun-dried tomato and olive bread,” he reflects. “Actually, it was really interesting.” Crossroads Café serves a poor neighborhood in the throes of gentrification. Problems of crime and addiction comingle with rising property values. Seniors living on fixed incomes particularly feel squeezed. Thanks in part to Whitlock’s culinary talents and commitment, the sense of community inspired by the café extends beyond the seniors it serves. Area sponsors donate food, money, volunteers and time to keep the program going. Entertainers and speakers add color and variety to each luncheon. A broad charge to “feed the hungry” can seem vague, but a goal to feed 50 people once a week gives clarity. “It is actionable, measurable, and easily repeated,” says Whitlock. Most importantly, it works.

GC’s players served up an ace for Relevant Pregnancy Options Center by assisting with set up and tear down of the fastpaced, nationally acclaimed production. “The Silver Ring Thing” incorporates music, lasers, lights, video, drama and comedy to promote teen abstinence. On the courts, GC’s 2013 men’s tennis team set a record with 12 regular season victories under the leadership of Coach Brett Brannon ’97.

THRIFTY THREADS The 2008 headlines painted a bleak picture for blue-collar Fort Wayne – “Indiana Hiring Ground to a Halt,” “Unemployment Up,” “Indiana Unemployment Hits 16-Year High.” Families devastated by joblessness were among the early bird bargain seekers at the community clothing resale where Kathy (Stewart ’91) Turpin volunteered. By 6:00 a.m. the queue of shoppers stretched beyond the entrance of the sale site at Grace Point Church, wrapped around a corner of the building and lined the parking lot until 8:00 a.m. when the doors opened. Since 1991, families have bought and sold gently used clothes, toys and books at the biannual resale for children’s items. Fifteen percent of each sale funds thousands of dollars in gift certificates that help needy families clothe infants and children. “Many families told me personally they couldn’t have done it without the resale,” reflects Turpin, a 10-year volunteer with the project. “This was especially true during the recent economic downturn where so many families lost their jobs.” She recounts the gratitude of families who received gift certificates, adding, “The small way we could be the hands and feet of Christ was the ultimate fulfillment for me.” The resale, however, is not small. During the years Turpin directed the sale, she oversaw 250 consignment sellers, more than 125 volunteers and the annual distribution of about $4,000 in gift certificates. “I’ve always enjoyed leading large projects,” she says. An employment lawyer, Turpin heads human resources for Brotherhood Mutual Insurance. Though she is nationally recognized as an expert in employment law for churches, it is the local resale assisting families in Christ’s name that makes her heart sing. Her helping hands echo the generosity she experienced as a child when caring persons helped her struggling, single mom. “I feel an incredible responsibility to pass on what many did for my family, to others who are in need,” she explains. 08 PLANTING SEEDS FOR RELATIONSHIPS – Every other Saturday, students serving in YACHT Club (Youth Against Complacency and Homelessness Today) load vehicles with toothpaste, razors, soap and warm clothes for distribution to homeless persons in St. Louis. The students supply the means for physical comfort. “But at the core,” clarifies student Nicole Barks, “we want to be about sustenance for the soul. We want to bring possibility for relationship.”

EXTRAORDINARY SHELF LIFE

It’s hard to stroll through Danville, Kentucky, without feeling a strong connection to its Civil War past. For most of his professional life, however, Karl Benson ’63 made sure that the people of Danville also stayed connected to the future. As director of the Boyle County Library for 35 years, Benson helped folks in Danville embrace new technologies without forsaking the community’s rich history and identity. Thanks to his care, today’s library patrons access streaming information online against a backdrop of displays depicting local history and artwork. Ideas are plentiful for the man known for his broad understanding of history, architecture, art, horticulture, education, community service, and international missions. Benson’s expansive interests, coupled with his ability to engage others in dialogue, helped fuel the library’s growth. “When I switched from teaching to librarianship, it just seemed eminently right,” he recalled after his recent retirement. The numbers testify to an excellent career match. Under Benson’s guidance, the library expanded from 7,000 to 44,000 square feet; its patronage increased from 6,300 to over 24,000, and its collection grew to 137,000 items. Throughout each stage of growth, Benson ensured that the library’s acquisition of books, media, computers and more than 250 pieces of art permanently displayed filled one primary purpose: to enrich the experiences of library patrons. Betsy Wilt, president of the library board, remarked, “I have seen Karl as a ‘public servant’ in the best sense of the term.” “I always hoped to develop the resources of the library that would expand the horizons of readers to the broader, multi-cultural, multiethnic world in which we live,” said Benson. By all accounts, he succeeded. Some say that libraries keep the collective memories of our communities and set our imaginations free to explore distant places. It was a good day 35 years ago, when Benson, mindful of both functions, set his heart and hands to work for the folks of Boyle County.

11 ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP ALUMNI Recognizing donors from our degree completion program.

HOPE AND HOME At age seven, Teresa Johnson ’04 hoped to become a teacher. At 11, she set her sights on becoming a pediatrician. At 16, she became pregnant.

An honors student from a middle-class, two-parent family, Johnson was determined not to become a negative statistic. She earned her nursing degree in 1983, her bachelor’s degree in 2004, her master’s in business administration in 2008 and master’s in education in 2012. She is the proud mother of three children.

GRADUATE DEGREE ALUMNI

Chariti Home helps teen moms become independent, self-reliant and nurturing mothers. It provides transitional housing, health education, training in parenting and life skills and access to useful resources. Last year, Johnson’s organization provided stable, family-style housing for three teen moms.

By day, Johnson manages a school-based health program, which provides preventive health and education services to East St. Louis and Cahokia school districts. In her off hours, however, she pours her heart and soul into Chariti Home, a faith-based non-profit she founded that supports unwed teenage mothers and their children in St. Clair County, Illinois. Johnson takes seriously the call to imitate Christ’s example as a servant-leader in her community. “It does take a lot of my time. But at the end of the day, it’s all worth it. I like to tell people it’s a God-idea, not a Teresa-idea. I just have to show up and do my part,” she said.

Fifteen young women also meet twice a month to participate in the Chariti Home mentoring program. They begin each meeting with a devotional and set goals that help them transition from high school to college. Participants receive bus passes, scholarships, and emotional support. It’s clear that Johnson is a role model for these young women. This month a former student stopped by Johnson’s office with her baby to share some good news. She had been accepted to nursing school and would start in January. Johnson said, “She told me, ‘I’m going to do what you did.’”

SIMPLE SUCCESS – The Simple Room after-school ministry to Greenville youth began as an Interterm class in creative evangelism more than 30 years ago. Its relationship to GC remains strong. Each month, more than 120 college students help produce Simple Room programs and serve as mentors, tutors and hosts to collaborative events at the College. Twelve students serve as paid staff through the College’s Federal Work Study Program. “GC has been a wonderful neighbor to the Simple Room,” says Cynthia (Gillard ’61) Wiegand, Simple Room board chair. “It would not have lasted for 30 years had it not been for the College.”

Greenville College defines alumni as any former students, full or part-time, who have earned some credit toward one of the undergraduate degrees, certificates or diplomas offered at Greenville College.

13 SMALL TOWN, GRAND HARMONY Spotlights shine on two young musicians, ages 9 and 11, as they take their places at drum sets on center stage at the talent showcase in Wray, Colorado. Their teacher plays along on a third set, with their father on rhythm guitar and their pastor on blues guitar. The “all hands on deck” approach not only provides a fuller sound, it also exemplifies the spirit that keeps music thriving in this town of fewer than 2,500 people. For 25 years, music-lovers across generations in Wray have joined forces to support the music education programs in its schools. Elizabeth (Hilbert ’09) Riggleman serves as chairperson for Up With Music, the force behind this grassroots support of the arts. Up With Music gives grants to teachers for equipment like music stands and microphones. It also funds private music lessons and provides scholarships for graduates to study music in college. After graduating from Wray High School, Elizabeth received an Up With Music scholarship that helped her attend Greenville College. When she returned to Wray as a graduate, it just made sense to give back. Now, her personal mission is to guarantee that other children in this small town on the eastern Colorado plains enjoy making music like she did. As local school budgets see cutbacks, Elizabeth works with other volunteers to actively support music education. “Our primary goal is to make sure our music programs continue,” she shares. Serving her community has provided an unexpected opportunity to work without knowing the final outcome. “I have to trust that we are offering enough support to our music teachers,” she says, “and conveying to the community that music is very important to our students’ education.” Elizabeth’s commitment to supporting music also presents a quiet opportunity for ministry. “I may never see or hear about the difference that I make in someone’s life,” she says. “I just have to trust that God will use me in every situation to bring Him glory.”

14 TAX RELIEF – Every other year, accounting students under the direction of Professor Larry Sayler commit about 100 hours to tax preparation for low-income families. Last spring, as part of the Alton Area Tax Project, they realized about $1M in tax refunds for their clients, plus an estimated $150,000 savings in tax preparation fees. Each student typically completes 75-100 tax returns in one season. Site manager David Thies reports that GC students cheerfully go the extra mile to assist clients.

FAITH TAKES OFFICE When semi-trucks access Greenville’s industrial park via the overpass off Route 40, Alan Gaffner ’76 sees more than an appealing draw for businesses that rely on trucking; he also sees a roadway fully funded by state and federal dollars. When he passes Greenville’s Federal Correctional Institution, he sees more than a penitentiary; he also sees jobs filled by Greenville residents. Both projects resulted from the city council’s collaborative work and Gaffner’s personal calling to serve Greenville as a councilman and then mayor. This marks his 24th year of public service. While Gaffner enjoys solving problems, he understands why people avoid elected office. Scrutiny of office-holders’ opinions and choosing sides on emotionally charged issues invite tension. “When you serve a community of 7,000 residents there are lots of diverse opinions,” he says. Still, he stays committed. “I’m a firm believer in the adage, ‘When good people do nothing, bad things happen.’” Gaffner’s full-time professional role for more than 30 years with Greenville Regional Hospital allowed him to interface with state and federal government offices. He learned how careful navigation of set procedures brings great rewards. If Greenville had not pursued the penitentiary and overpass projects, other communities would have seized those opportunities. Projects like these can take months and years to come to fruition, but Gaffner draws strength from Galatians 6:9 – “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” As mayor, he tries to let his faith lead the way. Gaffner has noticed others doing the same. “In recent years, I’ve been refreshed to hear elected officials talk about their faith,” he says. Still, an alarming counterforce in legislation at the state and federal levels continues to push against that very expression of faith. He offers another adage: “When Christians do nothing, evil prevails.” In Gaffner’s estimation, that counterforce should move Christians to engage in political processes. Much is at stake.

IN ONE DAY – From cleaning rivers to planting trees, students new to Greenville College launch each school year with the work of their hands and sweat of their brows. Many hands engaged in work translates into significant accomplishments in one day. As a good neighbor to the Greenville community, students have restored a savannah-nature preserve, built a walking path by the city pool and repaired nature trails.

HEALING WORDS IN A HARD PLACE When Erika Spring ’11 chose to serve as a summer intern chaplain at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women, the only women’s prison in New Jersey, she chose to participate in a community marked by fear and despair. Many of the 780 women incarcerated at the Mahan facility have known physical and sexual abuse. Erika recalls the moment when one woman she counseled finally understood that dealing drugs did not dictate her future. Challenged to imagine a different life, the woman responded with goals: “I want to help abused animals. I want to educate people about what prison is like. I want to go to beauty school.” The best moment came with the woman’s realization: “I never knew I cared about any of these things. But now I can look at this list and know that I have things to work toward!” Women in all security levels engaged in conversation with Erika, including those in solitary confinement. “I heard them talk with pride about their kids and the faith they have in God being a good God,” she said. “I was blessed to sit with women as they cried, encourage them and tell them that God still loves them.” She also served the prison’s officers and administrators, an experience that contributed to her expanded understanding of faith. “I have learned more about how to love,” she said. “Often people that are the most difficult to love are the ones who are in the most need.” Erika’s ministry deepened her compassion. It helped her imagine how she would represent these incarcerated women in the greater community outside the confines of prison. “I want to carry their stories well [and] in such a way that the world has an adequate picture of who these women really are.”

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND THANK YOU

Gratitude overflowed on campus this October when more than 200 students wrote thank-you notes to donors for scholarships they had received. Scholarship recipient and Papyrus reporter Maria Koppelberger commented on the many students huddled around tables and filling couches and chairs, writing. “It shows just how much we appreciate donors, she concluded. Presidential Inauguration

November 7, 2013

If I can press into the presence of the almighty God and, instead of my lack, find His sufficiency and His grace and His power and His resources, then much is possible. My prayer is that we will find the faith and the courage to embrace God’s call, individually and as a community. If we earnestly seek after this God who loves us more than we can possibly imagine, if we embrace His call, we will never be the same as an institution or as individuals. 22
