ON THE COVER: Education major Emily Koberlein ’21 engages preschoolers during one 10-week segment of her semester-long student-teaching experience during the pandemic. Emily honored mask mandates and learned to use animated expressions and project enthusiasm with her eyes and body language. At GU, immersion for education majors like Emily includes 300 hours of experience in rural and urban classrooms before student teaching. Emily wants scholarship donors to know they are responsible for “one of the best and most rewarding experiences in my life.” Thank you for giving. TUESDAY NIGHT’S DEEP DIVE: A CRASH COURSE IN CHARACTER AND SERVICE It takes a brave soul to willingly plunge into the unknown. Every Tuesday night, brave souls take that plunge. They work into the wee hours of Wednesday morning to turn H.J. Long Gymnasium into an all-campus house of worship for “The Wednesday Experience.” Head trouble-shooter Professor Gary Erickson helps the students manage dozens of technical and logistical problems. While the physical transformation in staging, lights, and sound amazes me, the students’ adoption of an “others-first” mindset amazes me even more. Hear what they say: • “We have to be flexible and prepared to do the things we don’t necessarily want to do at the moment.” • “I have learned to expect so much troubleshooting and to be creative on the spot.” • “It’s not just about setting up. It’s about worshipping God through the acts of service [and] using our talents for Him.”

• “The work we do behind the scenes is for the student body, faculty, and staff so they can experience God.” Film critic John Mason Brown once said that joy comes from “immersion in something that we know to be bigger, better, more enduring, and worthier than we are.” Friend, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making GU part of your “bigger and better” by praying for us, and sharing encouraging words, by recommending GU to prospective students, and funding scholarships that keep them here. Thanks to you, GU’s good work endures Tuesdays and every day. Blessings,

Mechanical engineering professor and project guide Vlad Ivashyn and Project Manager Kate Arthur ‘21. Kate received multiple donor-funded scholarships. Thank you for giving.

ONE COOL PROJECT HEATS UP LEARNING Senior capstone project melds engineering with business Some say an engineering degree is like a master key; it opens many doors. Last year, four engineering majors immersed themselves in a yearlong project that held the promise of opening doors not just for them, but for untold others. Their challenge? Modify a standard HVAC unit into a demonstration model that shows thermodynamics and heat transfer in action. The unit’s digital sensors, gauges, and see-through panels would open doors of understanding for students enrolled in GU’s thermodynamics and heat transfer classes. But that’s not all. If the model proved useful to GU students, it would likely prove useful to students at

other colleges and universities too. Not wanting to leave opportunity on the table, the young engineers partnered with business students to identify needs in the market for this teaching model. As the project’s manager, Kate Arthur exercised more than engineering skills. She kept the group organized, productive, and on schedule. She also conducted cost and market analyses to determine the viability for a small business to produce the demonstration units. Kate now includes the project in her professional portfolio. “This experience taught me more than any class, lecture, or test ever could,” she says.

When the Lines Between College and Career

Some students don’t miss a beat transitioning from college to career. Take JJ Smith. Last spring, JJ wrapped up a double major in music industry studies and English. Today, he works as a sales engineer with audio and music equipment retailer Sweetwater Sound.

FEBRUARY More than $570k in donor gifts establish The Center for Pastoral Formation on GU’s campus. Pastoral training through the Free Methodist Church expands. MARCH Friend to GU science students Dr. Lew Whaley ’75 enables GU to purchase a fluorescent microscope, a $70,440 value. Research opportunities for students grow exponentially.

JJ’s last hurrah at GU, an album called Mending, showcased his JJ Smith, recipient of the donor-funded creativity, production know-how, and McAllaster Honors performance skills. It also showed that Scholarship. Thank you he could collaborate with his band, for giving. Prone to Wander, to deliver a multifaceted project on schedule. Mending earned him credits in both his music industry classes and creative writing class. Even today, some aspect of the undertaking informs how he recommends equipment and advises customers in his work for Sweetwater. “Especially in the music industry, that kind of experience is valuable. It’s not as much about what degree you have, it’s [more about] the experience you have,” JJ says. For JJ, this included working in the state-of-the-art studios on GU’s campus.

“The experiences I got at GU definitely equipped me to get started working in my field, both at Sweetwater and in my freelance business.” As a freelancer, JJ provides audio editing, mixing, and mastering services. Without pause, he attributes these skills to a beat he embraced even as a freshman at GU—industry experience early and often.

Thank you for your support. We are fortunate to have generous donors like you to help students like me.” – Payten Morris ’22, biology major and beneficiary of GU’s new microscope Thank you for giving. THE RECORD | 2021 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

GU FINANCIAL CHAMPIONS DELIVER: 2021 IN REVIEW APRIL “Give Greenville” donors raise more than $121k for scholarships. Beneficiaries include students who are the first in their families to attend college. MAY Donors supply more than $170k in end-of-year bonuses to thank faculty and staff for bringing students through a year of COVID. JUNE Fiscal year ends. Donors set record raising nearly $3M for scholarships. They open doors for even more students to embrace Christ-centered learning at GU.

It is such a beautiful experience and opportunity being here [at GU], and this wouldn’t be possible without you . . . I am forever thankful.“ – Nina Torvisco ’24, recipient of the donor-funded Panther Preferred and Wilson T. Hogue Scholarships Thank you for giving. 4

“Teacher, You’re My Friend” Every parent of a preschooler has experienced that crazy tailspin that begins when the child insists, “I want what I want when I want it!” Reason dissolves. Emotions erupt. “Behavior management can make or break you,” says education major Emily Koberlein at the end of her 10-week student teaching assignment with Bond County School District’s Kindergarten Readiness Program (KRP). Four hundred hours of immersion in the preschool world is not for the faint of heart. Emily recalls the time one child’s misbehavior escalated. “I used all the tools in my toolbox to try and handle the situation on my own,” she says. The host teacher diffused the situation, but also took care to assure Emily “there will always be situations that stump you and make you feel like you’re at the end of your rope; It’s okay to ask for help . . . never feel discouraged when you are doing all you can do.” Emily (at work, below) credits KRP’s outstanding staff for showing her how to cultivate sensitivity to mental health issues, build relationships, and care not just for the child, but for the child’s family. The little hugs she receives and sweet declarations like “You’re my friend” and “I love you” fuel an experience where the good days far outweigh the bad. Emily has exited this part of student teaching knowing, “This is where I belong.”

BARISTA SPILLS THE BEANS ON WHAT STUDENTS REALLY LEARN FROM THAT COFFEE SHOP JOB

Hint: It’s more than what goes into a latte The freshman filling out the job application imagines pouring cups of coffee and wiping down tables—maybe opening a few boxes, stocking shelves, and taking out the trash. Upselling and hospitality don’t enter his mind. He’s never thought of a latte as a handcrafted drink.

smoothie mixes, and pumpkin spice flavorings. A frost in Central America drove the price of coffee up by 30 percent.

But Bobbi Smith, longtime managing barista at Jo’s Java on campus, suspects that he’ll come around, much like her current crew of 11 students have come around. “Coming around” means learning safety regulations, time management, solving problems, and sometimes babying aging equipment along. It means working a shift in tandem with Bobbi, who intentionally plays second fiddle to their lead. It means watching her build relationships with vendors and follow industry chatter on social media. Bobbi carries all the markers of someone who truly loves her work. Campus jobs help students connect with people outside of their usual circles. Student workers hone new skills, build portfolios, and establish job references. Each day at Jo’s brings new lessons, some market related. Supply chain issues last fall meant shortages of plastic cups,

Top photo: Barista Bella Johnson ‘25 serves Jesus Flores ‘25. Bottom photo: Some of the brew crew, from l to r: Sean Striegler ‘25, Emily Buratovich ‘23, James Bowen ‘22, Bobbi, Alyson Fry ‘25, and Bella Johnson ‘25.

The rookie baristas deal with the problems even as they take a front row seat to Bobbi’s work ethic, ingenuity, and joy in a job well done. They can learn much from the one who can’t contain a smile when she says, “Give me a challenge, and I’ll figure a way around it.” THE RECORD | 2021 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

“I DO, I LEARN”

Filling the gap when traditional resources fall short How many phone calls does it take to track down a rental truck when there’s a shortage? How do you design an event poster when you know nothing about graphic design? How do you energize a performance venue with lighting? You won’t find the answers in a textbook. That’s why Greenville University’s Contemporary Music Center (CMC) in Nashville, Tennessee, offers semester-long immersive experiences for students like Cali Weddle—students who enter fields where experience means everything. The CMC prepares young professionals for careers in music business, music performance, and in the technical side of music production. Cali, a student on CMC’s business track, says her role as tour manager gives her more responsibility than a typical internship would give her, but that means more real-world experience and more industry connections, too.

THANK YOU FOR AN IMMERSIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE! “There’s no textbook, no pop quiz you can take that will prepare you for what to do in the real world. The only way to do it is by trying and [potentially] failing,” Cali says. Cali may fail sometimes in the trial-anderror process, but CMC advisers guide and help her so she knows how to learn and grow from failures. She remains positive and feels well-prepared to dive even deeper into the industry after graduation. For now, as Cali stands on the threshold of a career in the music industry, she says the CMC is the perfect place to gain experience.

GU FINANCIAL CHAMPIONS DELIVER: 2021 IN REVIEW JULY 27 young donors launch the Panther Mug Club, a fun way to support today’s students. Anyone can join. Learn more at greenville.edu/ mugclub.

PLANNING TO LET GO OF THE PLAN Note to self: “Plan. Plan, plan, plan.” Later note to self: “When needed, let go of the plan.” Eight weeks on the road leading worship at youth camps with GU’s summer Pursuit worship team immersed vocalist/guitarist Marissa Horning (pictured above) in a world where plans go awry. Thunderstorms, staffing shortages, and illnesses demand flexibility. Equipment failures and miscommunications tax creativity and teamwork.

AUGUST GU’s newest giving group, Almira Circle, raises $40k for scholarships in two months. The Circle consists of women supporting young women in leadership. SEPTEMBER Select scholarships now include programming that cultivates leadership skills. Donors funded 176 leadership scholarships in Fiscal Year 2021.

But then, just when the worship arts and ministry major felt completely drained and discouraged, God provided reassurance, often through a worship service. “Going through eight weeks and not being able to rely on my own strength but relying on my team and on God—I think that kind of experience is really unique,” Marissa says. “I don’t think that would have happened or been so prominent in my memory if it had been a short-term experience.” Marissa cultivated greater sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, too, like when team members felt led to play a particular song or share a certain message. “Whenever we did that, you could definitely feel the Spirit moving in the service,” Marissa says. “It was a cool experience learning to plan, but also [letting] go of the plan in order to minister . . .” A camp pastor reported later that the students exhibited both their love for the Lord and their love for his young teen campers. The musicians proved effective ambassadors for GU and Jesus Christ: “Their worship leading was terrific, their patience with some difficult students was endless, and their energy was high even during their last week!”

A joke to brighten their day.” That’s what La Minh of Hanoi, Vietnam, imagines telling scholarship donors who make his GU experience possible. Above all else, he wishes them joy. Thank you for giving.

GU FINANCIAL CHAMPIONS DELIVER: 2021 IN REVIEW OCTOBER Donors raise $100k to launch fundraising for a sports facility that will expand GU’s capacity to host sporting events, attract top studentathletes, and honor former GU presidents and Panther fans Robert “Ish” Smith and W. Richard Stephens. NOVEMBER 100+ donors raise nearly $590k for scholarships through GU’s fall The BIG Give campaign. Every dollar raised provides financial relief to GU students and GU’s budget. DECEMBER About 50 students graduate mid-year. Donor-funded scholarships help 100% of GU’s traditional undergraduates earn their degrees, whether they graduate in December or May.

IMAGINE THAT! Students work toward simulation that recreates the exhilaration of high-risk activities for wheelchair users The jet boat carrying you picks up speed over glistening Lake Taneycomo. Two minutes into the ride, the shoreline scenery starts to blur. The boat swings sharply around. You gasp. It circles back on its wake—one bounce, two bounces, three. Water sprays. You feel the rush. Some call the ride thrilling; some call it breathtaking. By the end of the schoolyear, five students at GU hope to call it a simulation success for wheelchair users. Their yearlong deep dive into simulation integrates video with a virtual reality headset and a specially designed wheelchair platform. “With a video, you can look away,” says the team’s design and research specialist Luke Hopkins, “but with virtual reality, you’re immersed. We want to bring that immersion to this experience.”

“With a video, you can look away, but with virtual reality, you’re immersed.”

Thank you for believing in me enough to donate towards my education. It means more than you know.” – Emmanuelle Mossi Yakana ’23, history/political science major and Spanish minor 8

THANK YOU FOR GIVING | GREENVILLE.EDU

Greenville resident Scott Darnell, an award-winning developer of products for persons with physical challenges, pitched the simulation idea to the young engineers. Darnell sustained a spinal injury in a diving accident 30 years ago. He has since dedicated his efforts to creating mobility options for folks like him, in wheelchairs. The launch of GU’s engineering program in Darnell’s hometown presented a way to move the idea forward. Is the concept “just” a dream? Perhaps, but with each measurement the students take, with each calculation and re-calculation, the prospect of wheelchair adventure looks more and more like a dream come true.

ALUMNI NEWS

Erin (Weber ’02) Weber-Johnson and Dustin Benac have coauthored a book, Crisis & Care: Meditations on Faith and Philanthropy (Wipf and Stock Publishers, 2021). The authors examine the changes institutions and individuals have endured between the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections and reflect on the convergence of faith and philanthropy. In their publisher’s words, the authors “imagine alternative economies for faith communities, academia, and nonprofits, while also marking the unshakable encounter with grief and crisis . . . [They] linger in the space between what was and what will be to ask: what do we leave behind, what do we bring with us, and what possibilities exist where crisis and care converge?” 6

7 Ryan Burge ’04 has authored a new book, 20 Myths about Religion and Politics in America (Fortress Press, March 1, 2022). The volume explores how people think about religion and politics. Burge contends that most people disregard empirical reality and rely instead on anecdotes, news headlines, and “flat-out lies told by voices trying to push a religious or political agenda on a distracted public.” In 20 Myths, he presents data that debunks 20 misconceptions and guides readers past some of the common divisive, yet unsupported beliefs. Burge’s first book, The Nones: Where They Came From, Who They Are, and Where They Are Going (Fortress Press, 2021) addressed Americans with no religious affiliation. It garnered media attention, including articles in Publisher’s Weekly, Christianity Today, The Boston Globe, and Washington Post.
